The load-transfer mechanics of fully grouted roof bolts in coal mines have been investigated in laboratory and analytical studies. The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research is to increase understanding and better interpret data from routine field pull tests and to develop a numerical model of a grouted bolt that can be used in a global computer model of a mine roof. Analytical studies using closed-form solutions and finite-element techniques were compared to experimental results. Laboratory work includes variation of bolt length, hole diameter, and grouL type. Pull tests were pel'fol·med on 4-, 2-, and I-ft bolts in holes of 1-and I-3IB-in diameters. Both polyester resin and inorganic grouts were used as the anchorage medium. Strain gauges were installed on the bolts at several locations to observe the rate of load transfer from the bolt through the grout to the rock mass when a force was applied at the bolt end using standard jack pull testing procedures and equipment. The average anchorage length of 4-and 2-ft bolts was 22 in. Grout type and hole size variations did not produce a significant effect on the rate of load transfer from the bolt to the rock.

"Since the introduction of pulverized coal as a substitute fuel for natural gas in the various types of heating furnaces used, in steel mills, a number of fires and explosions have occurred, resulting in the loss of life and property.As one of the primary functions of the Bureau of Mines is to conduct investigations in the utilization of mineral substances with a view to increasing safety in the use thereof, it was deemed advisable to investigate the hazards involved in the industrial use of pulverized coal and, if possible, to devise methods of preventing future accidents arising therefrom. The knowledge of the explosive qualities of coal dust which the Bureau has gained in studies affecting dust explosions in coal mines was of material assistance in these investigations.Several plants were visited in which either fires or explosions had occurred, and data obtained as to the probable cause of the accidents.There was found to exist, among some of those employed about the furnaces, a lack of knowledge of the explosive and inflammable qualities of powdered coal.A small stream of pulverized coal leaking down from a defective joint in a coal transport line did not attract much attention, whereas, had a leak in a natural gas line occurred -wider similar circumstances, no doubt it would have had immediate attention.As a matter of fact, if by any means the duet cloud should come in contact with an open flame or hot metal, the effects would be as disastrous as if it had been gas.This is exceedingly well illustrated by an accident which came to the writer's attention. In the system used at this particular plant, the pulverized coal is transported to the furnace through compressed-air lines. The fuel is fed from a storage bin to a blowing tank in quantities as desired, after which compressed air is admitted and the powdered coal blown to the furnaces. At the time of the accident some repairs were being made to the tank, and it was supposed that the air pressure had been entirely released as the pressure gage stood at zero. There was, however, one or two pounds air pressure remaining and when one of the connections was taken off, a cloud of dust was blown across the room, 30 or 40 feet towards the drier furnace where it came in contact with some live coals. Immediately the entire room was filled with flame which rolled back and forth over a specs 50 feet or so in length."

Low-temperature heat capacities, high-temperature enthalpy increments, and the enthalpy of formation at 298° K were determined calorimetrically for vanadium subnitride (VN0.465). The low-temperature investigation gave S°298.15 = 6.379 ±0.005 cal/deg mole, and a combustion calorimeter investiga¬tion provided ?Hf°298.15 = -31.80 ±0.60 kcal/mole. The two quantities were combined with the high-temperature data to give standard values of enthalpies of formation and free energies of formation above 298° K. These and related thermodynamic functions were tabulated to 1,800° K. Similar data are included in the range of 298° to 1,600° K for the mononitride, VN.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings, and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

Although longwall mining productivity can far exceed that of room-and-pillar mining, the total methane emissions per extracted volume associated with longwall sections are generally higher than those for continuous miner or pillar removal sections. Increased face advance rates, increased productivities, increased panel sizes, and more extensive gate road developments have challenged existing designs for controlling methane on longwalls. Methane control research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently examined a number of practices designed to maintain concentrations in mine air within statutory limits and consistently below the lower explosive limit. These included a reservoir modeling approach to predict methane inflows in gate road entries. The outputs sug­gested that emission rates in the gate roads decreased with the use of shielding boreholes and increased degasification time. Also, mining perpendicular to the face cleats liberated more gas into the mine workings, emissions were almost a linear function of Langmuir pressure and volume, and emissions were inversely related to sorption time constant. Subsequent simulations predicted changes in methane drainage using in-seam boreholes. The results showed that longer degasification times resulted in lower face emission rates. Premining degasification produced more methane than that produced during panel extraction, a fact attributed to the already decreased methane content of the coalbed. This work concluded that longer premining degasification periods would be more advantageous to the operator. The industry trend toward increasing longwall face width can produce increased methane emissions from the face due to a higher volume of cut coal on the face conveyor. Two methods were used to estimate face methane levels on longer faces. In the first method, segmented methane data were extrapolated for greater face widths. The second method estimated emissions contributions from the shearer, face conveyor, panel belt, longwall face, and ribs, and summed these for wider panels. Permeability changes in the gob behind the longwall shields were estimated using a NIOSH-developed numerical model. The results showed that permeability was highest near the edges and corners of the gob.

A prototype particulate size analyzer system was developed that would rapidly determine size distributions of homogeneous and two-mineral materials in the 74-micrometer (200-mesh) to 7-micrometer size range. The system sizes particles in a series of hydrocyclone elutriation steps and senses the weight of the five sized fractions by nuclear attenuation techniques. Size distribution of materials was determined from experimentally developed mathematical relationships that existed between particulate weight and the measured transmittance of gamma rays from an Americium-241 source. In the developmental phases, size distributions of three minerals (quartz, magnetite, and hematite) and a laboratory prepared two-mineral mixture of quartz and magnetite were accurately determined by the prototype system. In later stages of the investigation, semiconcentrates, an intermediate magnetic product from a taconite plant, were evaluated. Using 25-gram feed samples of this industrial material, the analyzer system was found to predict weight percentages for individual size fractions with an accuracy of ±0.85 percent or better at a 95-percent confidence level.

This paper, which describes the milling practice of the Verde Central Mines, Inc., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Verde Central concentrator is located in Walnut Gulch, about 1 mile west of Jerome, Ariz., and on the Jerome-Prescott highway. It is about 1,000 feet distant from the main shaft of the Verde Central mine and treats ore from this mine only. The mill is connected with the main shaft of the mine by a 24-inch gave railway, over which the ore is hauled in 5-cubic yard capacity, rocker, side-dump cars, by a 3-ton Brookville gasoline locomotive.

Sphalerite concentrates prepared during processing of Missouri lead ores contain small percentages of cobalt and nickel which adversely affect zinc electrolysis. The Bureau of Mines has evaluated solvent extraction and precipitation techniques to remove and recover cobalt and nickel from zinc sulfate solution prior to zinc electrolysis. Prepared zinc sulfate solutions containing about 190 gpl of zinc and 50 ppm of both cobalt and nickel were treated using various combinations of complexing reagents, solvent, pH, concentration, time, and temperature. The following complexing reagents gave the best results: a-nitroso-ß-naphthol, ß-nitroso-a-naphthol, 1,2 cyclohexane dione dioxime (nioxime), di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime, and dimethylglyoxime. These reagents in suitable solvents lowered the cobalt and nickel levels to <0.1 ppm. Stripping the complexed reagents from the solvents was not possible except for nioxime. Direct addition of the appropriate reagent to the prepared zinc sulfate solution resulted in the precipitation of cobalt and nickel. Several possible flowsheets are presented for the removal and recovery of cobalt and nickel. Good zinc deposits were successfully electrowon from zinc sulfate solutions purified by solvent extraction and precipitation.

The Bureau of Mines studied the effects of reducing gas composition, tem-perature, and superficial gas velocity on the regeneration rate of alkalized alumina. Regeneration was assumed to follow the simple first order reaction for removal of sorbed S02: dµ/dt = -Kµ. An Arrhenius relationship can be plotted, which shows an activation energy of about 75 kcal/mole for simulated reformed propane. The general effects of the individual gases can be described as follows: (1) CO and H2 produced rates proportional to their con-centrations, up to about 5 percent for each; (2) addition of CO2 had no effects on the regeneration rate by CO; (3) the regeneration rate by H2 was lowered by the addition of H2O while the regeneration rate by CO was increased by 0 addition; (4) H2S showed a positive effect up to concentration levels of about 2 percent and then produced a rapid negative effect; (5) carbonyl sulfate (COS) increased the sulfur content; and (6) propane was as effective in regenerating the loaded pellets as was simulated reformed propane.

Capture airborne coal dust generated by a continuous mining machine to reduce workers? dust exposure and to improve face visibility. Approach Develop a low-profile dust collector system which can be mounted on the boom of a continuous miner. How It Works When coal is mined with a milling head continuous miner, a substantial amount of coal dust (respirable and non-respirable) escapes the dust suppression sprays at the cutter head. This can cause poor visibility around the cutting head and can expose the workers to high levels of respirable dust. A practical means of removing this dust is with a scrubber mounted directly on the mining machine. The Shasta and California Iron-ore deposits are 14 miles northeast of Redding, Shasta County, Calif.; and since 1907 have produced more than 300,000 short tons of exceptionally pure iron ore. Although some ore was mined and smelted from 1907 through the First. World War, most of it has been produced from 1942 through 1945 for use in making heavy ship ballast and concrete anchorages for mines. Irregular masses of magnetite, ranging from lumps of a few tons to pods containing about 25,000 tons, occur associated with skarn near the contact between the McCloud limestone and a younger granitic intrusive. Some of the deposits are low-grade, whereas others are nearly pure magnetite. Selective mining and hand sorting are necessary to produce a high-grade product. Investigation of these deposits by the Bureau of Mines included 2,910 feet of diamond drilling, some surface sampling of the principal mineralized zone and beneficiation tests. Resulting factual data are given in the body of this report.

Respirable quartz duet and a kaolin clay dust have been found to be of comparable cytotoxic potential in vitro on a specific surface area basis (Wallace, et a1,1985), despite the distinctly different potentials of quartz and clay for causing pneumoconiosis or pulmonary fibrosis (Sheers, 1984). A respired particle depositing in a respiratory bronchiole or alveolus will contact a pulmonary surfactant hypophase, of which a primary component is diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or diacyl lecithin (DPL) (Clements, et al, 1970). Several studies have found that adsorption of such surfactant suppresses in vitro cytotoxic effects of quartz dust (Marks, 1957). Subsequent phagocytosis and digestion by a macrophage may remove the coating, restoring cytotoxic potential and initiating disease processes (Iles, 1979). Adsorption of dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) from emulsion in physiologic saline by respirable sized quartz dust and kaolin dusts, and consequent diminution of the dusts' hemolytic and macrophage cytotoxic potential have been reported (Wallace, et al, 1985). This report presents additional data on the cell-free in vitro phospholipase A2 enzymatic digestion of dipalmitoyl lecithin adsorbed on a quartz and a kaolin respirable sized dust (Wallace, et al, 1988) to investigate mineral specific differences in the rates of digestion and of consequent restoration of dust membranolytic potential. Respirable crystalline alpha quarts used was eighty percent smaller than 5 micorometer aerodynamic diameter with a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 3.97 m2/g. Respirable kaolin dust was ninety percent smaller than 5 micrometer diameter and had a specific surface area of 13.25 m2/g.

Demand for arsenic trioxide dropped markedly during 1983, primarily as a result of a 27% reduction in cotton planting. As an oversupply of arsenic trioxide developed, prices declined for both domestic and imported material. Domestic Data Coverage.-Commercial-grade arsenic trioxide and arsenic metal were produced by only one U.S. company, which voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines. Several methods of calculating ore grades by diamond-drill sampling in the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., have been evaluated by statistical analyses of assay data. The natural distribution of gold particles, partly masked through sampling and assaying procedures, is probably lognormal. As a consequence of the gold particles being clustered rather than randomly distributed within the ore bodies, (1) more mine samples are needed to obtain a specified precision of mean grade than the number predicted by the standard-error-of-the-mean law; (2) the variance of gold values is not inversely proportional to sample volume, and, therefore, small-diameter drill core yields samples nearly as good as larger diameter core; and (3) sampling at 5-foot intervals provides nearly as good results as sampling at shorter intervals.

Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium over the temperature range -5° to 80° C and at pressures to 800 atmospheres. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the runs were fitted to a fourth degree polynomial equation of state in the pressure and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 was used. All data for a particular isotherm were treated simultaneously. A temperature function was found to represent the parameters B and C. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are believed to be accurate to better than 0.05 percent.

Provide better ventilation for mines by reducing air leakage around stoppings. Approach Most stoppings are constructed of concrete blocks and trowelled-on mortar and are not very airtight. Bureau of Mines research has shown that brushing on modified mortar containing fiberglass and/or other additives, that enhance strength and adhesion, minimizes air leakage around and through the stoppings. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report details the results of a series of large-scale experiments where small coal fires were used to ignite the conveyor belt at air velocities ranging from 0.76 to 6.1 m/s. In the tests, electrical strip heaters imbedded within a pile of coal were used to heat the coal to a point of flaming ignition. The flaming coal subsequently ignited the conveyor belt located approximately 5 to 10 cm above the coal pile. During the tests, temperature, CO, and smoke levels were continuously measured in order to determine both alarm time and level as the fire intensity progressed through the stages of smoldering coal, flaming coal, and flaming coal plus flaming belt. Analysis of the data leads to certain conditions of air velocity and sensor alarm levels that are required for early detection of conveyor belt entry fires. Two nomographs are presented, which define sensor alarm levels and sensor spacings as a function of belt entry cross-sectional area and belt entry air velocity.

The face area of a continuous mining section of an underground coal mine is the most dangerous area in the mine. Workers there are at nearly twice the risk of death or disabling injury than those in other parts of the mine. Despite extensive training of miners and improved equipment and mining methods, fatality and injury rates have remained constant during the past few years. It is clear that advanced research is necessary to apply new technologies or modify work procedures to solve the continuing problem of the loss of lives and the numerous injuries at the mine face. A U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is developing a Reduced-Exposure Mining System (REMS) that relocates personnel operating the mining machinery at the face away from the hazards to a nearby haven of relative safety. REMS uses proven technologies of computer automation and robotics to help control the operation of the mining machines at the face, while personnel are moved away to a nearby, safe control room. In this protected, well-ventilated environment, they can supervise or control the operation of the machines while viewing what the machine is doing using video and graphic display monitors.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Department of Energy, has attempted to increase the activity of nickel catalysts for converting synthesis gas, derived from coal, to a substitute natural gas. This report describes the effects of low-level additions of B, Ca, Ce, Co, Mn, Mo, Pd, Re, Ti, Y, Zn, and Zr on the methanation activity of Raney nickel. The methanation rate at 320° C and the resistance to poisoning by 2 ppm H2S were used to compare catalysts. The effects of the additions were small, and the experimental variances were large, necessitating the use of statistical methods to identify significant effects. Co, Ti, Y, and Zn improved the resistance to H2S poisoning, but only Co improved the methanation rate In some individual catalysts containing Ca, Mo, or Mn, both the methanation rate and resistance to H2S poisoning were improved.

The Bureau of Mines, S. Department of the Interior) at, its Morgantown., W. Va., station, operating under a cooperative agreement with West Virginia University, is conducting research and development work on the problem of producing synthesis gas from coal. An important part of this work is the study of the gas purification necessary to meet the rigorous standards required to render the gas suitable for use in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels. One of the most detrimental impurities is sulfur in all forms, the maximum amount that can be tolerated being one-tenth of a grain per hundred cubic feet. Concentrations as low as this require the use of precise analytical methods to evaluate the performance of processes used for removing sulfur. At the same time the analytical methods should be rapid in order to reveal the failure of purification before damage to the expensive synthesis catalyst results. Although sulfur in unpurified gas is generally present as hydrogen sulfide and as organic sulfur compounds, the latter may be converted to hydrogen sulfide for analytical purposes. Thus a suitable method for the determination of traces of hydrogen sulfide may also be used for the determination of organic sulfur.
