To keep the mineral and allied industries informed of trends in the causes of accidents, and to point out the need for corrective measures, the Bureau of Mines collects, analyzes, and periodically publishes health and safety statistics. This report includes data for 1963 on injury experience, with related employment statistics, at coal mines in the United States. These data are presented in tabular form under the following headings: General Injury Experience Tables 1 to 6: Current data on number of injuries, degree of injury, frequency and severity rates, average severity, and related employment and production data by work location.

"INTRODUCTION The act of Congress establishing the Bureau of Mines in 1910 delegated to the Bureau, as one of its principal duties and functions, the study of health and safety in the mineral industries with a view to devising and putting into operation means of conserving the health and safety of persons employed in the industries. One of the first health and safety activities of the Bureau of Mines was therefore organization of a trained force to promote instruction in first aid in the mineral industries. First-aid training has been an important activity of the Bureau of Mines since its establishment. The standard first-aid course requires a minimum of 15 hours of instruction and practice work. A person completing the initial training course is issued an engraved certificate and pocket card certificate; thereafter, only a pocket card certificate is issued for additional training.From 1910 to 1926 first aid was taught by trained Bureau of Mines employees; consequently, only a comparatively few persons were trained. In 1926, however, cooperative first-aid training was initiated, which provided the means to train the entire personnel of mines or plants within a short time in a single campaign. Many mines and plants have taken advantage of the cooperative plan, whereby keymen in a mine or plant, in addition to the initial training received, are given intensive training in first aid by a Bureau of Mines instructor. Those men who show an aptitude for teaching are selected as tentative provisional first-aid instructors. In order to qualify as a provisional instructor, a tentative instructor must, under the supervision of a Bureau of Mines instructor, train a class of at least six persons employed in the minerals industries in the standard Bureau of Mines course in first aid. After it has been determined that the class has been trained properly, a provisional first-aid instructor's pocket card certificate is issued to the class instructor. The first-aid instructor can renew his pocket card certificate each year by training or retraining at least six persons connected with the mineral industries to satisfactorily pass an examination given by a Bureau of Mines representative. After five yearly renewals of a provisional instructor's pocket card certificate, an engraved, permanent instructor's certificate and a permanent instructor's pocket card certificate are issued to the instructor."

A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the summer 1951 is presented in table 1, and for comparison, a similar summary for the summer 1950 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. As indicated, octane numbers of motor gasolines sold in the United states decreased approximately one-half to one octane unit from the record levels attained during the winter of 1950-51 and are a little below the octane numbers of summer 1950. However, average vapor pressures of the summer gasolines did not change, and certain distillation temperatures varied only slightly from those of the year before.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has promulgated rules to limit the exposure of metal/nonmetal underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). These rules have resulted in many types of control tech­nologies being implemented including diesel particulate filters (DPF). The passive type DPF is the most desirable because it requires little maintenance and it regenerates while the vehicle is operating. One problem with passive DPFs is that many vehicles cannot develop the sustained exhaust temperatures needed to initiate DPF regeneration, and thus it is required that the DPF be catalyzed to decrease the temperature needed for regeneration. In some past studies, such catalyzed filters have been shown to cause an increase in the nitrogen dioxide concentrations in the exhaust, resulting in a potential health hazard. In this study, a lightly catalyzed DPF along with a fuel-born catalyst were employed to help reduce the DPM emissions from a 980F loader used for cleanup in a stone mine. After 30 days of use, the filter continued to regenerate successfully at the exhaust temperatures generated by this loader, substantially reduced DPM concentrations emitted in the exhaust, and did not cause a measurable increase in nitrogen dioxide levels that could be attributed to the device.

This report deals with upgrading of the coal reserves of Raleigh County, VI. Va., to metallurgical standards. The data on samples herein correctly show the characteristics of the bed at the point where sampled and are used to indicate the general quality of the bed in the county. The principal results and conclusions are: 1. Raleigh County contains large reserves of high-quality, high-, medium-, and low-volatile coals. 2. The principal beds from which an increased amount of coal is expected to be mined in the future are: The Eagle, Powellton, No. 5 Block, Hernshaw, Fire Creek, and Pocahontas No.6.

The increasing demand for iron ores prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the sources of past production in Kentucky to determine whether reserves of usable ore still exist. Preliminary investigation showed that the holdings of the Rose Run Co. were the most promising, inasmuch as the deposit had not been exhausted by past mining and the property was near railroad facilities and but 80 miles from the blast furnaces at Ashland, Ky. The Bureau conducted a churn-drilling and sampling program to investigate the depth, thickness, and iron content of the ore beds so that they might be evaluated as a possible reserve of low-grade iron ores. The Rose Run area in Bath County, Ky., was explored by 74 churn-drill holes totaling 2,059.4 feet of drilling and 4 cuts and test pits. Fifty-seven drill holes and the four test pits penetrated the ore bed at an average depth of 22 feet. The bed had an average thickness of 2.54 feet. Analyses show that the calcium and magnesium carbonate content is more than sufficient to flux the silica and provides an excess that needs an admixture with other siliceous iron ores.

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,954 samples, representing the products of 93 companies. The samples were collected during December 1955, January and February 1956. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the post 10 years is given on page 5.

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining. This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g,.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes. In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased. Tests indicated that methane and water infused in bleeder holes traveled along the bedding planes of the Pittsburgh coalbed at a faster rate than across the planes. Methane associated with coalbeds is produced by the slow decomposition of carbonaceous material in the absence of air and the presence of water. It is lighter than air and, depending on its concentration, forms an inflammable or explosive mixture with air. It is believed that methane is entrapped in and around the pores of the coal and adjacent strata--often under great pressure. "The town of Ajo is built in the desert and consisted of but a few houses when the New Cornelia Copper Co. started operations. Since there were no stores at Ajo or vicinity the New Cornelia Cooperative Mercantile Co. was established to serve the needs of the employees of the New Cornelia and allied companies.The New Cornelia Copper Co. advanced the money to erect the store building and to buy the stock, and assumes all risks. In all, $85,000 has been advanced, representing the capital stock of the enterprise.The store is run by a store manager appointed by the Copper Company and who reports only to the general superintendent. A committee of seven workmen, representing the various depart¬ments, meet with the store manager monthly and make suggestions for the betterment of the service and, present complaints which have been brought to their attention.The store is well managed, carries a large and well assorted stock and is modern in every respect. Prices are at the same level as in the other Southwestern mining camps. The Copper Company does not particpate in the profits of the store but does receive six per cent interest on the capital advanced. At the end of the year, after making proper deductions for interest on capital account, depreciation of store equipment and fixtures, and, for a proper sum to the surplus account, the rest of the profits is distributed among the employees of the company in proportion to the amount of their purchases."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a very rapid gas chromatographic method for routine determination of oxygen, nitrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide in mine atmosphere samples. Analysis is accomplished in 3 min; readout appears on a single strip chart. The gas sample is split between two columns contained in separate chromatographs. A 5 A molecular sieve column separates oxygen, nitrogen, and methane; a porous polymer column separates carbon dioxide from an air peak. Direct selective analysis of methane from this unresolved air peak is accomplished using a hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID). Carbon dioxide is catalytically converted to methane and detected by FID.

The Minerals Availability Program of the Bureau of Mines conducts cost evaluations of current and potential mineral operations in the United States and foreign countries. The International Mining Cost Indexation System (IMCI) allows data of different time periods within a country to be updated to a common base year for analytical purposes. The IMCI comprises 12 factor cost indexes and an exchange rate series for 96 market economy countries, denominated in both local and U.S. currency. The IMCI for each country contains 12 time series indexes that measure the average annual rate of change in the cost of factor inputs to the mining industry within that country. Mining industry factor cost indexes include wages, plant and equipment, construction and mining materials, power and transportation, and other measures considered to comprise the majority of capital and operating costs. Cost data or proxies are collected in local currency. Index series within each country are constructed separately and indexed on a 1975 base year. The local currency index is converted to a U.S.-dollar-based currency index using an exchange ratio.

This report presents the results of an initial investigation into some problems resulting from the use of assays representing unequal sample interval lengths and the use of the weighted average grade of ore in evaluating bedded mineral deposits . A mathematical proof and examples are given to show that the unweighted and weighted assay averages are equivalent when there is no correlation between assay value and sample interval length but that these averages are different when there is correlation between assay value and sample interval length . The amount of this difference between estimates is a function of the degree of correlation . One set of sample and assay data , based on 11 stratigraphic sections of the Phosphoria formation in Idaho , indicates that the relationship between the amount of difference between estimates and the correlation factor is approximately linear . If this correlation relationship can be established , within acceptable limits of precision , as a consistent attribute of deposits , the estimate of weighted average grade of ore could be predicted directly from the unweighted estimate of grade of ore by using the relationship as a prediction factor . Randomness tests on the sample and assay data from the Phosphoria formation , using the mean - square - successive - difference method , indicate that correlation between assay value and sample interval length ( each sample interval length represents an individual bed or stratum of the formation ) , apparently has little effect on the independence between successive assays , between successive sample interval lengths , and between the products of assays and sample interval lengths . Therefore , these data can be analyzed statistically as long as the original sample sections have been selected at random for sampling .

Conservation in the utilization of any product is always subject to improvement if the composition and properties of the product are known. Petroleum is no exception, and knowledge of the characteristics of crude oils, even when given on the broad basis of routine type analyses has proved useful to chemists, engineers, and geologists in improving pro- duction and utilization of petroleum. For a quarter of a century the Bureau of Mines has sought to provide such information regarding crude oils and has analyzed many samples of petroleum by its standardized rou- tine method. Most of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published up to January 1, 1948. The routine method used for all these analyses is basically the same as that described by Dean, et al.. Briefly, the procedure consists of testing by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, and viscosity, and of distilling a sample of the crude oil by a standardized procedure and determining certain properties in the sep- arated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the proce- dure, and the distillation data obtained are used to calculate the approx- imate amounts of products present in the sample such as percents of gas- oline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The data obtained are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of typical midcontinent crude oil is shown in table 1. Compilation of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses are often shown in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports. In recent years the use of visual aids has expanded the? field of safety education. This is a modern adaptation of a method employed in ancient times, when simple paintings and drawings were the only means of recording current events. In its present application, visual aid employs sound and silent motion pictures, stripfilms, lantern slides, descriptive posters, and color. According to Roberts,3/ "Visual education is a method of imparting information which is based on the psychological principle that one has a better conception of the thing he sees than of the thing he reads about or hears discussed." Dent4/ further defines visual aid as "all the materials used to facilitate the understanding of' the written or spoken word."

The possibility of chemical analysis by identification of characteristic X-ray spectral lines was first suggested by H. C. J. Moseley in 1913.3/ For a given spectral series it was found that the frequency of the characteristic radiation was proportional to the square of the atomic number of the excited atom. Siegbahn and his coworkers improved the instrumentation and accurately determined the wavelengths of the characteristic spectra for most of the elements .4/ In fluorescent X-ray spectroscopy, the characteristic X-rays of atoms are emitted or fluoresced upon absorption of primary or incident X-rays of shorter wave-lengths (higher energies). The K spectral lines are used for elements of atomic numbers 13 to about 63, and the L series for those above atomic number 50. Whether the K or L lines are used for elements 50-63 depends upon the type of instrumentation available. The laboratory at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., uses the K lines up to atomic number 57 and the L lines for thong elements of higher atomic number.

This is a report on experimental work on development of a gasification process operating at near atmospheric pressures and using finely pulverized coal entrained in oxygen and steam. The gasifier was designed by The Babcock and Wilcox Co. in cooperation with engineers of the Bureau of Mines Morgantown station. The test work discussed in this report covers the first 34 tests made in the pilot plant in which a strongly coking Sewickley-bed coal, ground to either 70 or 90 percent through a 200-mesh screen, was used.

Columbium, tantalum, titanium, and zirconium are present in solid waste products generated by the chlorination of rutile used for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiC14). The columbium and tantalum were separated from titanium and zirconium by liquid-liquid extraction techniques using a secondary amine. Salts of these elements are in a leach liquor produced by water leaching of mineral waste from the chlorination of rutile. This waste, produced at the rate of approximately 50,000 tons per year, is about 40 wt pct water soluble. Leach liquors, separated by filtration, were further separated into a solid fraction and a liquid fraction by pressure hydrolysis, The solid fraction containing Cb, Ta, Ti, and Zr was dissolved in HC1-HF and used as a feed solution. Columbium and tantalum were removed from the organic extractant with 1 [N] HC1. A miniature 10-stage reactor showed that the columbium and tantalum present in solution could be separated with a continuous flow.
