A degasification experiment was conducted in a Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed mine in Virginia. It involved (1) drilling holes in the coalbed in the out- side headings of a set of five being developed in virgin area, and (2) conducting a methane emission rate study as mining progressed and additional holes were drilled. Degasification from all drill holes except the longest in each of the outside headings and the first three drilled (excluding the in-situ pressure hole), was erratic and inconsequential in methane emission rates. The two longest holes liberated 66 and 79 cfm of methane, which is significant for the coalbed, but such quantity lasted a relatively short time; the first three were uniform but low in methane emission.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. Chemical thermodynamic properties for the ideal gas state from 0 to 1500 K are tabulated for all of the alkane hydrocarbons through C10. These properties are based on correlations of the extant data for the entropy, vapor heat capacity, and enthalpy of formation of individual alkanes and the equilibrium constants of alkane isomerization reactions.

Knott County is one of the smaller coal-producing areas in the Eastern Kentucky coal field. It contains numerous coal beds, many too thin to support mining over a wide area, Coal produced in the county is from a few rail-shipping operations and many small truck mines. Many smaller mines are working beds whose exact location in the coal-bearing strata is uncertain. Samples were collected from 11 different coal beds, of which the Fire Clay, Hindman, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Flag are the most import ant from a product ion standpoint. Known reserves in the Hindman bed. are very limited, and almost the entire production from this bed is gathered from two comparatively, large rail-shipping mines in addition to the four principal beds, samples were taken in the Francis, Haddix, Fire Clay Rider, Whitesburg, Amburgy, Upper horn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. I .beds. Figure 1 is a typical section of the strata, showing the more important coal beds and. readily identifying their location with respect to each other. The bed names as shown are particularly important because of the local tendency to assign several names to the same bed. This report contains information on the relation between and precision or reproducibility of counts (light-and dark-field) of the dust in liquid from simultaneous impinger, midget-impinger, electric-precipitator, and filter-paper samples. The impinger was the main sampler used from about 1922 to 1939 by industrial hygienists in the United States for collecting samples of unhygienic dust from the atmospheric environment of workers. The midget-impinger, a small modification of the preceding impinger described in 1937, has been the sampler used most since about 1939. Electric precipitators5/6/ have been used to a limited extent, mainly by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory, for obtaining results comparable to impinger results. A filter-paper sampler for obtaining results comparable to impinger results has been described by Brown. All these samplers have a high collecting efficiency for particles larger than 1 micron in diameter revealed by the usual light-field counting procedure. However, their collecting efficiencies are quite variable for the smaller particles revealed by the dark-field counting procedure used in this study. Published information on the relation between the results of these samplers is limited and scattered. Summaries of some of this information are given in this report along with some previously unpublished information.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. The Bureau hereby acknowledges its appreciation of the hearty spirit of cooperation that was universally encountered.

In July 1948, the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and mine operators, published Report of Investigations 4306, "A Combination Cleaning and Dewatering Process for Treating Fine 'Sizes of Coal, Preliminary Report In this report a new process, referred to as kerosene flotation; was described, and results of experimental work with the process Previous to the fall of 1947 were given, The contents of the report. were summarized on pages 19 and 20' as follows: In coal-preparation plants using wet methods of cleaning, the most difficult problem is the cleaning and dewatering of the "fines" from about 10-Mesh to 0. A combination proceed is now under investigation that shows promise of practically and feasibly solving this problem. The process is similar to froth flotation, but a generous quantity of kerosene is used as one of the reagents, and the feed is from approximately 10-mesh to 0 considerably coarser than the usual froth flotation feed. The kerosene and the coarseness of the reed result in a floated product that, under certain circumstances, can be dewatered satisfactorily by a simple process of mechanical squeezing, Squeezing is accomplished by means of an ordinary conveying' Auger-and trough assembly with a section of pipe easing at the outer end of the trough. The bottom of the trough and. casing is fitted with wedge-wire sections to permit escape of the water freed by the squeezing action of the auger. On account of the important role of the kerosene, the process has been referred to in this report as kerosene flotation. Up to now, the investigative work has been divided about evenly between the laboratory and commercial plants. Nearly all of the work has been done on sludges containing the solids from the underflow of dewatering screens. A few runs have been made on 10-mesh to 0: fines from raw coal, but in some of those runs the dewatering mechanism, failed to function.

The patterns of variation of the 21 anisotropic elastic constants with direction arc presented for all of the symmetry systems that are normally expected to occur in rocks and in the constituent minerals. The exception, which is not discussed, is the triclinic system for which no elastic constants are available. Variations are shown for rotations about the principal axes by means of polar graphs. These include graphs for all of the n-fold symmetry axes possible for elastic symmetry and thus make it possible to visualize variational patterns for rotations about any n-fold axis. Variations throughout space are shown by means of equal area projections for the only constants (those relating axial stress to axial strain) that are uniquely defined by a single closed surface. For those unfamiliar with the compliance (Sij) and stiffness (cij) coefficients, the variations that can be shown by Young's modulus (E), Poisson's ratio (v), and shear modulus (G) are also given.

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. Ramani of The Pennsylvania State University.The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute Program. A high-B.t.u, gas can be synthesized by the catalytic methanation of a mixture of 2.5 to 3 parts of hydrogen to 1 part of carbon monoxide, obtained in the gasification of coal, using a steel catalyst followed by Raney nickel in a hot-gas-recycle system. Conversion of 99 percent of the H2+CO yields a fuel gas with a heating value of 983 to 1130 B.t.u. per cubic foot containing 78 to 96 percent methane, no carbon monoxide, and very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons. With the steel catalyst alone, conversions were 85 to 90 percent, giving a fuel gas of 810 to 868 B.t.u, per cubic foot, or 847 to 975 B.t.u. on a C02-free basis. INTRODUCTION In 1948 the U.S, marketed production of natural gas was 5.15 trillion cubic feet; by 1958 it had reached 11.0 trillion cubic feet, a rate of growth of 8 percent annually. 4 5 Although demand is expected to increase less rapidly, by 1966 it may reach 16 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimated 4.7 percent annual increase.6

"INTRODUCTION This investigation is a continuation of previous work 3/4/5/ on the gaseous products of permissible explosives with and without sheaths. The range of oxygen balance of the explosives has been considerably increased. As has been shown previously, certain approximate relations exist between the volumes of gaseous products and the oxygen balance. Further systematization of the data is not feasible, since the method of theoretioal calculatln of the gaseous product is not yet satisfactorily developed. In a previously described method, 6/ it has been assumed that the explosion occurs at constant volume and that thermodynamic equilibrium is established. Apart from the presumably less important uncertainty of some of the thermodynamic data, it is not known how the confinement of the shots in the Bichel gage or the Crawshaw-Jones gage should be treated, or whether thermodynamic equilibrium is fully attained; nor can the extent to which the equilibrium composition changes during the subsequent period of expansion and cooling be judged with any reliability. Therefore, no calculations have been attempted. However, in anticipation of possible future theoretical interest and as an aid in answering practical problems, the new data are presented in the same minute detail as was done previously."

This report presents experimental work conducted on a number of coals found within the boundaries of the Missouri River Basin, which were, to an extent, a selection of coals typical of that region. In the min, the laboratory work falls into three general classifications: (1) Laboratory distillation assay of coal to establish yields on carbonization; (2) chemical analyses of the coal samples before drying or carbonization; and (3) chemical analyses of the products of carbonization. It will be seen in the following discussion that these data derived from the small-scale laboratory apparatus are useful in predicting yields from pilot plants or industrial units. Coal is produced in about 48 general areas or mining fields in the Western States, of which approximately 18 fall within the limits of the Missouri Basin.3/ Beginning with the Northern Colorado field, through the Central and Western Wyoming fields, the coal is principally bituminous and subbituminous rank. The western Montana coals are also of these ranks. Progressing northeast from central Wyoming the coal decreases in rank, as shown by the subbituminous C coals of the Gillette field in northern Wyoming and the lignites of eastern Montana and North Dakota.
