The Bureau of Mines devised and constructed a modified Knudsen effusion apparatus, permitting a constant measure of the weight of effusing vapor, to determine the equilibrium vapor pressure of metal halides at temperatures up to 1,200° K and over the pressure range 10-5 to 10-2 torr. The reliability of the apparatus was established by determining the vapor pressure of potassium chloride. After correcting for partial dimerization of the vapor, data obtained on solid KCl between 750° and 950° K can be expressed by the following equation:

In the commercial evaluation of coal tars, a distillation analysis properly carried out is of considerable importance. Close attention must be given to this operation in order to obtain consistent results and to secure the minimum decomposition of the tar compounds, Which in Many cases are sensitive to undue heat effects. Low-temperature tars in particular contain compounds of this nature, while in the case of tars produced at high temperatures the large proportion of pitch present has an adverse influence during a distillation. If excessive cracking takes place, the composition of the distillate will naturally vary from the normal, with the result that all the analytical criteria subsequently obtained are affected. Where tars, produced over wide ranges of carbonization temperatures are investigated as in the survey of gas, coke, and by-product making properties of American coals now being conducted at the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station, the method of distillation must necessarily be the same for all of the tars studied. Also, it mast function equally well for both low and high temperature tar permit accurate fractionation, and reduce adventitious decomposition to a minimum. The authors are aware that certain types of distillation analysis which do not meet the above requirements may give results comparable with those of the large stills of a by-product coke-plant where one type of tar is produced. These may be simpler and shorter and entirely suitable for control work, but at the same time have little value in a fundamental investigation.

A review of? reports and literature on the pyrite deposits at Pyriton, Ala., indicated that a large tonnage of pyrite, some of which contained a small amount of copper, had been mined and shipped to fertilizer plants throughout the South. The information contained in this literature tended to demonstrate that the ore occurred in separate lenses of greater or less extent and of varying thickness and richness in pyrite as well as in copper. The outcrop being parallel with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad and just south of it makes the deposits readily accessible for shipment. Slopes could be sunk as they were in the past in the ore body if it were of sufficient grade and thickness, and the ore could be hoisted up the slope and milled close to the slope mouth with an ample supply of water from Talladega Creek, which follows the outcrop closely.

Traditionally, fine coal is more troublesome than the coarser sizes at every step of the coal-preparation process--screening, cleaning, dewatering, and drying. Therefore the present trend toward a higher proportion of fines in the run-of-mine product, brought about by changes in mining practice necessitated to increase productivity, has added greatly to the task of preparing coal for the market. One of the more difficult and costly problems involved is that of recovering fine solids from the washery water. These fine solids should be recovered in the interest of conservation, and they must be removed to provide recirculating water of proper quality. If there is a plant effluent, it must meet increasingly stringent requirements against stream pollution. Vacuum filtration has been used for years at a few plants to recover the extreme fines, but its additional cost discouraged general adoption until recently. Now, with growing emphasis on better solids recovery, filtration is becoming more widespread. Many coal slurries filter readily, giving high cake rates and clean filtrates. Others, however, particularly those containing either a high proportion of material finer than 200-mesh or an appreciable amount of clay, are much more difficult to filter. Many of these refractory slurries can be rendered more filterable by flocculation. A previous report of Bureau of Mines research dealing with flocculation alone was published in 1940.5/

This report describes a method for treating pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data obtained with a Burnett compressibility apparatus. The method makes use of a general nonlinear least-squares technique developed at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center. It is assumed that an adequate functional form is available for the expression of the compressibility factor as a function of either the molal density or the pressure. The functional form of the compressibility factor can be either linear or nonlinear in the parameters to be evaluated. Formulas are given for calculating variances and covariances of all parameters evaluated and for calculating the variance of calculated quantities of interest.

To encourage the development and conservation of the Nation's ceramic raw materials, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, under an agreement with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, evaluated samples from a clay resource located in Clay County, Ga., for use as a raw material for lightweight aggregate. The physical properties of clay samples, taken from 5-foot increments of drill cores from 11 holes, were determined. Raw materials were plasticized and extruded to produce 1/2-inch by 1-inch pieces and fired in a rotary kiln to produce lightweight aggregate samples. The resulting expanded material had excellent loose pour weights ranging from 30 to 37 lb/cu ft. The expanded test materials were crushed, sized, and used as aggregate to form concrete cylinders. The unit weight and compressive strength of the cylinders averaged 106 lb/cu ft and 3,350 lb/sq in, respectively; these values meet American Society for Testing and Materials specifications for structural concrete. The clay from the drill cores was also used to make test bars that were evaluated for building brick.

A combined ion exchange X- ray spectrographic method was evaluated for the determination of 11 metallic elements in high - purity tungsten : Aluminum , calcium , chromium , cobalt , copper , iron , magnesium , manganese , nickel , titanium , and zinc . Copper , nickel , and manganese in the 5- to 100 - microgram range ( 1 to 20 parts per million based on 5 - gram samples of tungsten ) , calcium in the 10- to 100 - microgram range , and cobalt in the 5- to 20 - microgram range can be determined within an accuracy of ± 10 percent of the amount present . Limits of detection of these elements are 0.05 to 0.14 microgram . The overall method was unsatisfactory for the determination of aluminum , chromium , iron , magnesium , titanium and zinc in tungsten .

Poroplastic membranes containing ion exchange liquids were studied for separating cobalt from nickel-containing solutions similar to ammoniacal laterite leaches. The driving force for cobalt transport was differences in pH and composition between the leach and extraction streams. Using a diketone ion exchange liquid, a leach pH of 6.5 to 7.0, and a strip pH of 2.3, cobalt was extracted from a 750 ppm solution containing 2500 ppm of nickel at rates ranging from 1 to 10 µg/cm2 .min in single membrane cells, and from 10 to 100 in more closely spaced multiple membrane cells. Rates were variable, with evidence that cross -membrane flow pasterns were a key factor; a reproducible rate of 30 pg/cm .min would be economically viable. Loss of transport observed after several days of continuous operation was restored by flushing membranes with fresh ion exchange liquid. A major effort was devoted to preparation of thin, leak-free membranes; the resulting membranes endured operating conditions without mechanical failure.

A comparison has been made between cubes and spheres in the matrix of the high-intensity wet magnetic separator. For two inclined plane surfaces, such as may occur with cubes, the maximum force value, H [dH-dx] is at the point of nearest approach and is much higher than the force resulting from adjacent spheres. Although the maximum force value for cubes is higher, it decreases more rapidly at increasing distances. The maximum force for spheres is at an appreciable distance from the point of nearest approach. At field intensities for magnetic saturation of the iron spheres, the force extends to further distances with greater uniformity approximating that of the constant force or isodynamic field. The force is also independent of the sphere diameter, which permits the scaling of the sphere diameter to provide changes in particle migration distances without changes in force gradient.

The objective of this report is to explain a statistical method for the summarization, organization, and classification of multivariate assay and other data from the mineral industry. Multivariate data are those characterized by several measurements at each data point, such as assay data from a mixed metal mine, or blast furnace data. A specific method of linear discriminant analysis, the Mahalanobis d2 procedure, is explained, starting from elementary principles; the d2 procedure enables many measurements at many data points to be studied by investigating the interrelationships among the data. The relation of linear discriminant analysis to other statistical methods for treating multivariate data, in particular the eigenvalue technique of factor analysis, is also explained. Example analyses are made on data from the Frisco mine, San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico. The data comprise assay values for silver, lead, copper, and zinc taken at some 19,000 sample points distributed into 91 groups.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. "INTRODUCTION The general program of the investigation of coal mine drainage which the Bureau of Mines is making includes, among its many phases and objectives, a study of the fate of the acid, content of drainage after it enters natural streams, and the effect of seasonal variations on the degree of contamination of streams. Opportunity for studying these under comparatively normal conditions and variations can readily be found, but there is only a chance opportunity for studying than under extreme conditions. The unusual drought that prevailed during the summer of 1930, however, created a condition of low water favorable to a study of one of the extremes.This report gives the results of an investigation of Bennett Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek, Pa., made under this condition.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis work was conducted under the direction, and with the advice, of Dr. R. "INTRODUCTIONPlatelet-activating factor (P AF) has been shown to mediate a broad range of biologic activities (1). Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group, an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon of the glycerol backbone, and an ether linkage at the first carbon. The alkyl group attached to the first carbon can exist in a variety of chain lengths, with the C16 and C18 forms predominant in humans. The structure of P AF has been identified as 1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphorylcholine (2,3).PAF can be released from a variety of cell types, such as basophils, neutrophils, and alveolar macrophages ( 4-6). Stimuli for the release of P AF include calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and zymosan. In addition, endotoxin has been shown to be a potent stimulant of P AF release from alveolar macrophages (7).P AF has been shown to have a number of pulmonary effects. It has been associated with asthma since it can cause contraction of pulmonary tissue (8) and leukotriene secretion from leukocytes (9) and induce airway constriction when inhaled by humans (10). In addition, PAF is a potent chemoattractant and can cause migration ofneutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (11,12). Endotoxin is a lipopolysaccharide-protein complex derived from the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria. I.PS is the lipopolysaccharide portion of endotoxin. LPS contains four covalently joined subunits: lipid A, 3-deoxyoctonate, a core polysaccharide moiety, and an 0-specific antigenic polysaccharide side chain. Rough LPS contains no 0-antigen side chain. The liP.id A portion of LPS has been associated with most of the biolQgic effects of endotoxin (13). This lipid A subunit consists of a D-glucosamine disaccharide backbone substituted with four fatty acid side chains. Endotoxin is found in a wide variety of occupational settings associated with organic dusts derived from plants or animals, such as cotton, cereal grains, silage, rice, and poultry (14-18). In addition, airborne endotoxin has been found in sewage treatment plants, composting plants, offices with contaminated humidifiers, and showers or saunas (19-22)."

A new process under development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for producing synthetic rutile from ilmenite is described. Rutile formation is based on oxidation and fluxing of titania slag produced by electric furnacing of ilmenite. Laboratory tests show that phosphorus pentoxide flux additions to oxidized slag enhance conversion to rutile by forming a phosphate-based glass matrix. This matrix contains most of the major impurities, including the oxides of iron, aluminum, magnesium, manganese, and silicon. Rutile crystals of 5 to 150 microns in size were formed in slags heated to temperatures of 800° to 1,550° C. The synthetic rutile crystals were liberated from ground slag by treating with phosphoric acid to weaken the glass matrix, followed by attrition scrubbing. Rutile fractions analyzed as high as 94 percent titania content. In several instances, more than 90 percent of the titanium in the shag was recovered to yield combined rutile fractions containing 90.2 to 92.6 percent titania.

The Bureau of Mines conducted seven pioneering experiments in a 12-inch-diameter Kroll reduction reactor to examine the feasibility of coreducing the chlorides of Ti, AI, and V to produce a homogeneous titanium alloy sponge. The coreduction studies proceeded in a normal manner, and the yields of sponge were comparable with those of pure titanium sponge made in the same reactor. Vanadium concentration was very uniform throughout the sponge cake when VC14 in solution in TiCl4 was fed into the molten magnesium. More difficulty was encountered in feeding solid VCl2 and AIC13. Vanadium and aluminum concentration in the sponge was not uniform, and mechanical difficulties were experienced with the small-scale screw feeder. Although the sponge varied in composition from region to region, the ingots prepared from it were uniform in composition.

This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metalnonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data.

The Bureau of Mines is developing a leach-electrolysis procedure to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc from sulfide concentrate without the generation of sulfur oxide gases. Chlorine-oxygen leaching of the concentrate yields zinc chloride (ZnCI2) which, after purification, is electrolyzed in a fused-salt cell to obtain molten zinc metal and chlorine gas for recycle. This paper describes a laboratory-scale investigation made to develop a procedure for electrowinning zinc metal from ZnC12. Zinc chloride by itself is not a suitable electrolyte because it fumes badly above its melting point and is a poor conductor of electricity. Other salts therefore must be added to prevent fuming and improve the conductivity. Optimum results were obtained with a KC1-LiCl-ZnCl2 bath at 500° C, using a current density of 5 amp/in2 and an electrode spacing of 0.5 inch. Under these conditions, SHG zinc was produced at a current efficiency of 94.3 pct and an energy requirement of 1.16 kwhr/lb. Fused-salt electrowinning eliminates the need to handle and melt cathodes and increases the production of metal per unit cell volume through the use of higher current densities than are possible with aqueous electrolysis.

The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. The author acknowledges the assistance of C. F. Jackson, mining engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper and the compilation of the data.

The Federal Bureau of Mines studied the thermal decomposition of the nitrides of the Group V A metals (CbN, Ta3N5, and VN) with the goal of preparing high-purity metals. Solid-state purification and arc and electron-beam melting were examined. Electron-beam melting proved to be the most efficient means of nitrogen and oxygen removal. Columbium and tantalum of 99.9-pct purity were prepared by this technique; in the case of vanadium, however, nitrogen could not be reduced below the solid-solution level.
