Crystallographic modifications and kinetics of solid-state phase trans-formations were determined for five rare-earth" sesquioxides--La2O3, Nd2O3, Sm2O3, Eu2O3, and Gd2O3. Oxides used for crystal modification studies were prepared by thermal decomposition of the following high-purity salts of the five rare-earth elements--carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, oxalates, and sulfates. X-ray diffraction patterns of the cubic and hexagonal oxides were indexed by a graphical method and patterns of the monoclinic oxides by Ito's method. The kinetics of crystallographic transformation were determined by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry. The kinetic data were interpreted using a shrinking sphere model. All of the transformations followed first order kinetics. Activation energies were calculated by application of the Arrhenius equation. These solid-state phase inversions were concluded to occur by a reconstructive transformation mechanism.

A mineral survey of the 23,760-acre Abert Rim Wilderness Study Area (OR-1-101) was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1986 at the request of the Bureau of land Management in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in south-central Oregon, 26 mi north-northeast of Lakeview, OR. Federal and Lake County mining records indicate no mining claims, geothermal leases, or oil and gas leases within the study area as of January 1, 1987. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the study area. The Wilderness Study Area is dominated by Abert Rim, a north-trending Basin and Range fault scarp that parallels the study area's western boundary. Exposed on the scarp is an approximately 2,000-ft-thick volcanic sequence consisting of Oligocene-Miocene basalts, tuffs, and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a full-scale model of a 15-ft-wide coal mine entry to use in combination with finite-element analyses to investigate roof support systems and various types of roof bolts. The objective was to enhance understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the interaction between rock and supports and the relative integrity of bolted mine roof as a function of roof bolt type, length, spacing, and tension, and the basic characteristics of the roof strata. The laboratory test results, when correlated with computer simulations using fmite-element analysis and underground verification tests, should provide a basis for desigillng safer, more cost-effective roof control systems and help to establish guidelines for employing fully grouted resin and mechanically anchored bolting systems. The background for this research, the research approach, the methods and equipment employed, and the results are described in this report.

"INTRODUCTION The Ahles iron mine, also known as the Pequest mine, in Warren County, N. J., was operated continuously for 15 years and was still in ore when it closed in 1916.Tie property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943. 3/ This examination led to an investigation of the deposits by the Bureau by diamond drilling two holes under the old workings to determine whether the extends downward.This report describes the work done at the Ahles mine by the Bureau and presents the data obtained.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Historically, the surface subsidence over underground coal mines has been predicted using empirical profile or influence functions which have little or no connection to the actual mechanics of the subsidence- Without a mechanistic basis, establishing the exact site-specific parameters to use in these empirical methods has been problematic. A practical subsidence predictive method based on mechanics has the appealing capability of allowing the determination of site-specific parameters from fundamental properties of the overburden with minimal field calibration work. This paper presents a case study where a mechanics-based, boundary-element program is used to calculate the surface subsidence associated with several panels of a Northern Appalachian longwall coal mine. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, and it incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin seam or vein type deposits. In this paper. the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at three longwalls. The subsidence results from the model are compared with field measurements and analyzed The results from the case study in this paper demonstrate that the laminated model with calibrated properties can easily provide fairly accurate subsidence predictions and is fairly flexible for fitting measured subsidence. However, additional subsidence predictive case studies are recommended in order to ultimately evaluate the potential of the laminated overburden model for practical subsidence prediction

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. Progress made in a second and final metallurgical investigation made by the Bureau of Mines of near-surface Hawaiian bauxitic deposits from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Islands, and on a deeper deposit from Kauai, is reported. Previously reported Al2O3 extractions were increased by modifying conventional processes to fit the ore being tested. Increases in Al2O3 extraction were: Kauai, from 82.8 to 95.4 percent; Maui, 85.5 to 94.1 percent; and Hawaii, from 79.5 to 86.4 percent. Use of a "caustic-reduction sinter, leaching, and magnetic separation process" for Al2O3 extraction also produced an iron concentrate of commercial grade, except for titanium content. No successful method was developed for the recovery of a satisfactory titanium concentrate.

Greater mining productivity requires a more efficient cutting process. The cutting force available from today?s mining machines has been optimized with respect to machine size and weight. Researchers have shown that when employing water-jet-assisted cutting, bit forces and drum torques can be reduced significantly, which may allow mining machines to become lighter and more efficient. The Bureau of Mines has initiated a program to develop a water- jet-assisted rotary cutting system using the conventional bit assisted by a directed water jet operating at moderate pressures (3,000 to 10,000 psi). This water-jet-assisted cutting system has the potential to improve cutting efficiency without increasing machine horsepower or water usage (beyond what is presently used for dust control) or requiring fundamental changes in mining practice. IR addition to improvements in productivity, other anticipated benefits of water-jet cutting include reduced generation of respirable dust, elimination of frictional ignitions, increased bit life, reduced fines, and fewer machine vibrations. The papers presented at this open industry meeting discuss the development of water-jet-assisted cutting technology and future application of this technology to a variety of mining techniques including roof drilling and longwall mining.

First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nev., hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten that cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydro-metallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hours, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of Na2C03 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution-to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hours, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 wt-pct W03. The pregnant solution contained 11 g/l W03.

The Bureau of Mines designed a down-fired refractory-lined combustor that efficiently burned pulverized coal to produce a gas suitable as working fluid for an open-cycle gas turbine. The gas contained relatively little carbon, so the load on the ash-separation equipment was significantly reduced. Moreover, reduction in carbon content of the gas increased the average density of the solid particles making them more amenable to removal by centrifugation. Centrifugal-type separators failed to remove sufficient ash; however, to limit blade wear enough to achieve operating periods generally deemed necessary for commercial practicability.

This report describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in-mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system for multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. The Bureau's prototype system is described, with emphasis on design features that counter commonly experienced and/or perceived operating problems with pneumatic detection systems. Finally, the results of a 3-year in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype system are discussed.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

This report describes the initial feasibility, the development and the field demonstration of a system for shaft sinking employing a high energy mechanical impact rock breaker and a compatible muck disposal system. The increased shaft sinking rates, decreased costs and improved safety conditions obtainable by the elimination of the less efficient conventional drill-blast-muck cycles are discussed. Four shaft sinking concepts utilizing the impact rock breaker in various shaft configurations are developed and the field demonstration in a rectangular shaft is described. The progress achieved, the problems and their remedies and the proposed modifications to improve the machine are described.

A preliminary survey was performed to investigate the impregnation of relatively weak, porous volcanic tuff and a relatively strong, dense sandstone with five different monomers. Increases in compressive strengths by factors of 2 to 5, and elastic moduli by factors of 2 to 3.5, are reported for natural rocks (tuff., sandstone, dacite), which were impregnated with five monomers (methyl methacrylate; chlorostyrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent styrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent chlorostyrene; 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene); polymerization took place after monomers were forced into the rock. Impregnation was performed (1) by pressurizing rock specimens from one end, or (2) by a vacuum-soak operation. Polymerization was accomplished by either radiation or chemical initiation techniques. Strength improvement is dependent on (1) the type of monomer used, (2) the amount of polymer incorporated into the rock, and (3) the degree of water saturation of the rock. Water saturation strongly reduced the effectiveness of the method for the polymer systems tested. The more viscous monomers (for example, 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene) were more effective in displacing the water from the rock, and compressive strengths of wet rock were doubled with these systems. Water saturations ranging from 25 to 100 percent of maximum saturation gave essentially identical results. Further tests on other types of mine rock; including shale and coal, are planned. Water-compatible polymer systems should be developed, or present systems should be suitably modified. For application to tunnel stabilization, design studies evaluating the improvement in rock strength and its influence on the support system are also recommended.

In 1944, the 78th congress of the United States enacted Public Law 290, which directed the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Bureau of Mines, to furnish industry with basic information and cost data for the development of a synthetic liquid fuels industry. Recently published information with respect to the cost of synthetic liquid fuels processes indicates a wide variation in estimated results. To clarify the results and inconsistencies for the hydrogenation of coal, the Bureau of Mines has prepared preliminary designs and calculated detailed investment costs from which the operating costs to produce 30,000 barrels per day of liquid products, mainly gasoline, by coal hydrogenation were obtained.

Tool manufacturers are required to provide declarations of vibration emission values in order to sell their tools within Europe. To ensure that users can compare results obtained from different manufacturers, the declared values must be obtained using a methodology as specified in the relevant test code (such as in the ISO 8662 series of standards). In most cases, the vibration emission values obtained using test codes under-estimate the vibration that an operator will be exposed to when using the tool on a work-site. A further problem with manufacturers’ data is that usually only a single value is provided for a tool. This is despite many factors affecting the vibration emission, including inserted tool type, work piece, operator technique, tool condition. New improved test codes are in the process of being developed. In order to provide guidance to users on how to interpret manufacturers’ data, a Draft CEN Technical Report (Draft CEN/TR 15350 (2005)) was developed. Part of the CEN/TR provides multiplication factors for combinations of task and tool type. For example, data obtained from electrical hammer drills (tested according to EN 60745-2-6:2003) should be multiplied by 2, for hammering applications, in order to obtain an estimate of the vibration emission during work. In response to concerns from industry, the UK trade association OPERC have, in collaboration with hire companies and tool manufacturers, established a freely accessible online database of tool emission values based on independent tests carried out under simulated work-site conditions. This paper reports some of the data obtained from electrical hammer drills, highlighting the range of emission values that can be obtained for a tool. Data from many other tool types are also included in the database. Methods Tri-axial hand-arm vibration was measured at both handles of each of 19 electrical hammer drills, in accordance with ISO 5349-1 (2001). Each tool was measured with three experienced operators and at least 5 runs were completed for each operator. Tools were tested using a range of appropriate new bits from 4 to 40 mm diameter. The minimum number of bits for a tool was 3; the maximum number was 29. 146 tool / bit combinations are reported here, representing about 2200 individual 6-axis measurements. Operators were required to drill vertically into a concrete block with a compressive strength after 28 days of 40 N/mm². Two drills (1 and 15) were battery powered; others were powered using a 110V transformer supply.

Ten the degree of bydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reasonable changes of pH.

Ten the degree of hydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reason¬able changes of pH.
