The Bureau of Mines has developed a quantitative Analysis for pyrite in coal by X-ray diffraction that can be accomplished in little more than 1 hour. To minimize the sample analysis time, data processing has been completely computerized with pertinent output information displayed on a VR12 cathode-ray tube display. Use of this computerized system is not only advantageous during the experimental stages of the pyrite analysis project but would also be essential if the X-ray diffraction procedure is accepted as a standard method of analysis.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies hearing loss as a separate illness category. Hearing loss accounted for 11% of all illnesses in 2005 (U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006a). According to occupational data for coal mining provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2000 to 2005, operators that exceeded 100% noise dosage were from only seven types of machines: auger miners, bulldozers, continuous mining machines, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric) and trucks (Title 30 CFR Part 62, 2000-2005). Roof bolting machine operators rank second among all underground machine operators that exceed 100% noise dose. The systems MgO-MgFa-SiO2, at 2 and 4 weight-percent Li2O and at 3.8 and 7.7 weight-percent Na2O were investigated by solid state reaction at 1,200° C. The results are summarized in four ternary diagrams. Besides the expected humites and simpler silicates or fluorides, proto-amphibole and water-swelling fluormicas or fluormontmorillonoids were found in the systems containing lithium and monoclinic fluoramphiboles, water-swelling fluormicas or fluormont-morillonoids, and nonwater-swelling fluormicas were found in the systems containing sodium. These latter compounds were not in the base system MgO-MgF2-SiO2.

Current methods of inspecting wire rope for broken wires or excessive wear include visual inspection, physical measurements of rope diameter, and electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT). Visual inspection and physical measurement arc the least comprehensive methods. Electromagnetic NDT enables a more thorough assessment of the condition of a wire rope, but the repeatability, accuracy, and objectivity of this method can be improved. One means of achieving this goal is to use a computer to analyze the test data and determine the condition of the wire rope, including the presence of broken wires and corrosion, and the amount of wear. An off-the-shelf data acquisition and analysis system was tested in a U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratory using a continuous loop of wire rope containing fabricated flaws. The test rope was run through a commercially available NDT instrument. The output of the instrument, normally connected to a paper strip chart recorder, was digitized and analyzed with a personal computer. These initial tests were successful in showing that the use of a computer can improve current methods of NDT waveform collection and analysis.

The need for a large capacity, high speed computer is more apparent in the revised model than in the original one. Core storage requirements for data and model logic have at least tripled. This dictates the use of one of the large modern machines such as the IBM 360-370 series or the Univac 1108 and 1110, which handle the model without the need for extensive program overlay. Computer time is expensive on these machines, however, and comprehensive analysis has gone into optimizing computer execution time consistent with model information flow sensitivity. For example, revised locomotive tramming routines have been developed which will significantly cut execution time compared to the previous version. Transceiver Applications The computer coding for the model has been developed to enable program execution and testing using a remote terminal on a time sharing system. In fact, nearly all of the coding, debugging, testing and modifications have been performed from a terminal during develop¬ment. The gaming options described in the Model Input Section of this report have been designed so that they are easily changed by the user from any remote site. One restriction on remote applications which could arise, however, is where highly detailed output options are specified, resulting in a large amount of output records which could be handled more efficiently on a high speed printer.

Experiments were made with a batch reactor to determine the effect of gas pressures, temperature, and gamma radiation intensity on the reaction CO + Ch ? COC12. The equation, [dp = 0.0110 (1 - 0.01t) (PCOI)1/2 PC12] where [dP] is the change of pressure of phosgene with time (atm/hr), t is the temperature (°C), PCO and PC12 are the reactant pressures (atm), and I is the radiation intensity (r/hr), was found to best fit the data. Oxygen and a large ratio of reactor surface to volume retarded the reaction, but inert gases had no effect. A low-temperature reactor system is proposed to take advantage of the conditions which give a high reaction rate with gamma radiation and a simple scheme of product purification.

Geological differences among various coalfields restrain the applicability of subsidence prediction using empirical approaches previously developed. The Bureau of Mines assessed data collected from 16 longwall panels in the Northern Appalachian basin. Attention was focused on the effects of rock lithology, excavation width, and panel depth on the subsidence factor. The results show that the subsidence factor can be expressed in terms of the width-to-depth ratio by a simple exponential equation, which has a coefficient tentatively considered as the subsidence index. This index varies with the lithology of a particular site, and can be expressed in terms of percent distribution of weak and strong rocks in the overburden.

This Information Circular from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) documents and supplements the information presented in a series of workshops held during 2002 and 2003. The primary intended audience consists of all who are involved in developing and conducting miners' training. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers and independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property during the year 2000. Unfortunately, these workers have a relatively high risk of suffering serious work-related injuries and illnesses. The mining industry has the highest rate of occupational fatalities among all U.S. industries. The fatality rate is 30 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to 4.6 for all private industry (Morbidity and Mortality Week Report, 2001; NIOSH, 2002). Compared to workers in other industries, miners also have a relatively high rate of nonfatal lost-time injuries, and their injuries tend to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1999). Many miners are also exposed to significant health hazards, including coal and silica dust, diesel exhaust, and noise. More than 1000 U.S. miners die of lung disease each year (NIOSH, 1999). Mine safety and health professionals have long recognized training as a critical element of an effective safety and health program. Federal regulations (30 CFR, Parts 46 and 48) require mine operators to provide initial safety and health training to all new miners, as well as a minimum of 8 hours of refresher training each year. The time and money being spent to train U.S. miners is substantial, and so there is a strong and steady demand for new and better mine training materials and methods. A growing concern among mine safety professionals regards the training of new workers. A major change in the mining workforce is anticipated within the next decade. In major segments of mining, especially coal, relatively few workers have been hired since the 1970's. Thus, as an entire cohort of miners in the current workforce nears retirement, the replacement of these employees will require an influx of new workers. New miners may be young people who lack the ability to recognize and respond to mining hazards in an appropriate manner. They may also have had different educational experiences than their older counterparts. Many safety professionals believe that these two cohorts require different approaches to training. The papers in this report should help prepare mine trainers for the changes about to occur in the workforce and acquaint them with strategies they can use to enhance the effectiveness of their training. The first three papers present basic principles for teaching adults. The five remaining papers are intended to illustrate how these principles can be applied to the development and imple¬mentation of effective training for miners. Below is an overview of these papers. 1. Kowalski and Vaught review the process and principles of adult learning. The learning model they present includes a discussion of goals, content, delivery, assessment, and remediation. Adults are viewed as active learners, experienced-based, expert in their own right in specific areas, independent, real-life centered, task-centered, problem-centered, solution-driven, skill-seeking, self-directing, and internally and externally motivated. Basic aspects of curriculum development are briefly reviewed. For further information about adult learning, see Camm and Cullen's paper. 2. Mallett and Reinke's first paper discusses issues related to training new miners who have recently or will soon be entering the mining workforce. These new generations of miners have different learning style preferences and training needs than Baby Boomers and other older miners. Even trainers who have been highly effective in the past should reassess their training styles and their classroom materials to determine if they are prepared to meet the needs of these young new workers. This paper provides information that will help mine trainers communicate across the generation gap. 3. Mallett and Reinke's second paper provide an overview of training evaluation. Trainers and decision-makers are given a framework for planning and assessing training evaluation strategies. The authors present Kirkpatrick's (2001) model of evaluation categories and discuss how to start an evaluation plan and various ways to collect data. They do not provide detailed instruction in evaluation methodologies, but give trainers a review of the things they need to consider when developing an evaluation plan. A good evaluation plan can inform revisions to a training course, assess trainee learning, and/or answer managers' questions about program effectiveness. 4. Brnich, Derick, Mallett, and Vaught discuss a technique for incorporating worker participation into fire prevention and safe equipment operation training. This technique involves development of short (5 to 7 minutes) videotapes coupled with toolbox talks that ground the content of the videos within the context of a miner's workplace. An example of one of these training modules is presented, along with the results of an evaluation performed on its effectiveness at improving miners' understanding of what types of information they should be sure to communicate during a mine emergency. 5. Wiehagen, Conrad, Friend, and Rethi discuss on-the-job training (OJT) as a method for teaching miners safety and production skills. Much of the training is done by experienced workers. This paper describes how small investments can help improve the effectiveness of on-the-job training. Effective on-the-job training involves some structure and planning in the transfer of responsibility for task performance from the trainer to the novice. Assisting the trainer could involve helping develop up-to-date job analyses and offering strategies for teaching and evaluating job skills. This paper was commissioned by the Japan Technical Cooperation Center for Coal Resources Development. It is to be published in a proceedings following a series of presentations to Japanese coal officials in February 1997. The paper focuses primarily on summarizing the past 20 years of U.S. research on promising techniques for ensuring that underground coal miners work safely. These techniques can be grouped into three major categories: management, workplace design, and training. Each technique is described, and the results of efforts to apply the technique at underground coal mines are summarized. Recent statistics on accidents and productivity in U.S. underground coal mining operations are presented before the overview of research findings is given. Because Japanese coal mines are using the longwall method of coal extraction, separate statistics are given for U.S. longwall versus room-and-pillar coal mining operations.

The Bureau of Mines designed a cell having four variable compartments in series to facilitate analysis of multicomponent mixtures. Use of the cell considerably decreases the time required for differential absorption analyses. A solution of a major component is placed in each compartment, and the light absorbed by each of these components is varied by increasing or decreasing the path length of the appropriate cell. Simple calculations then establish the amount of the component present. In analyzing unknown mixtures, compensation is made for compounds known to be present, and the differential spectrum representing components not accounted for is recorded and analyzed.

A program was written which utilizes a remote teletype input to a time- sharing computer to plot charged particle or X-ray energy spectra which are stored in the memory of multichannel analyzers. The program, written in FORTRAN V, accepts the data printed out by the pulse height analyzer on paper tape and then, after reading these data tapes into the computer, plots on the teletype the desired energy spectra on a scale automatically adjusted for the maximum number occurring in the data. The program is flexible enough so that the researcher can subsequently expand or contract the vertical (intensity) or horizontal (energy) scales. With a slight modification, the program will accept data printouts from scalers or analog to digital converters. The program also includes a feature for integrating the energy peaks obtained by pulse height analysis.

The postwar demand for insulating material such as mineral wool, in-creased in proportion to the rapid construction of new buildings, placing an enormous burden on the existing mineral-wool industry both in known sources of raw materials and in available plant facilities. In view of the increased demand on the industry, the Bureau of Mines in its Mississippi Valley Experiment Station" Rolla, Mo., undertook an investigation to aid the industry by establishing resources of raw materials through actual laboratory wool-blowing tests and by developing certain methods for evaluating the physical proper-ties of a mineral wool. As material was received from the public, laboratory-evaluation technique had to be developed, the results of which would reflect in the mineral-wool-industry standards. The methods of testing used by the mineral-wool industry, not only would have required a pilot-plant installation capable of producing a large tonnage of mineral wool, but each wool-blowing campaign would have been very expensive and necessitated considerable personnel and equipment. The present laboratory wool-blowing equipment can produce as high as eight wool-blowing campaigns a day. The nature, simplicity, and size of the physical testing equipment permit testing as small a sample of wool as 25 grams and give information as reasonably accurate as in a 40-pound bag of wool. The purpose of this report is to describe the laboratory method of production and the evaluation of the physical properties of small quantities of mineral wool. Considerable work has already been done, and the interest of the public and industry is measured in the number of samples being submitted for testing.

Heats of formation of three crystalline oxides of rhenium (Re02, ReO3 and Re207) have been determined by the method of solution calorimetry, using an aqueous perchloric acid--ceric perchlorate solvent. Copper metal and cupric oxide were utilized as auxiliary substances. Heats were determined at 298' K for the reactions Re + 2CuO = Re02 + 2Cu, Re + 3CuO = ReO3 + 3Cu, and 2Re + 7CuO = Re207 + 7Cu. Standard heats of formation were derived using the value of -37.23 ±0,15 kcal/mole as the heat of formation of CuO. The standard molal heats of formation of the rhenium oxides were determined: Re02, -107.3 ±0.8 kcal; ReO3, -140.8 ±0.9 kcal; and Re207, -301.9 ±1.8 kcal.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

GENERAL INFORMATIONSince its introduction into coal mines, the use of Airdox has grown in popularity, especially in the Indiana and Illinois coal fields. Its use permits breaking dawn coal on shift, whereas the use of explosives for blasting coal on shift is prohibited by law in those States. Many of the hazards connected with the use of explosives are eliminated. The accident experience in the use of Airdox has been excellent with respect to the number of fatalities or serious injuries per million tons mined.The Federal Mine Safety Code specifies that Airdox lines should be grounded at the compressor and at other points of low resistance along the lines but should not be connected to tracks, pipe lines, or other possible power conductors.
