"Abstract—Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modelled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiological saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 3TC and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defence system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modelled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica haemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin haemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate that most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in the same time; that which is. results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.INTRODUCTIONERYTHROCYTE HAEMOLYSIS and pulmonary macrophage enzyme release assays show quantitatively comparable high cytotoxicities for both silica quartz and kaolin respirable sized dusts (BROWN, et al., 1980; DANIEL and LE BOUFFANT, 1980.) This contrasts with the strong potential for respirable quartz dust to induce pulmonary fibrosis and the much more limited potential of kaolin dust to do the same (MORGAN and SEATON, 1975).In an attempt to understand this anomalous situation, assays were performed on quartz and kaolin dusts incubated with dipalmitoyl lecithin emulsified in physiological saline, to simulate the initial contact of a respired dust with the pulmonary alveolar hypophase. The ability of kaolin dust to adsorb dipalmitoyl lecithin from physiological saline has been quantified (WALLACE, et al., 1975). Such lecithin treatment suppresses the cytotoxicity of both silica and kaolin to background levels (WALLACE, et a1.,1984).Surfactant coated detoxified dusts should then be phagocytised by pulmonary macrophages, incorporated into a macrophage secondary lysosome and exposed to hydrolytic lysosomal enzymes. Among these is phospholipase A2, which hydrolyses diacyl lecithin to lysolecithin. This was modelled by incubating lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase A2 in vitro to determine if the enzyme can digest the dust-adsorbed lecithin, and if the retoxification differs between the two dusts in a manner which might distinguish their pathogenicity."

"INTRODUCTION In carbothermic processes for the production of magnesium, magnesium oxide is reduced by carbon according to the following equation:(1) MgO + C = Mg(g) + CO.The reaction is virtually complete at temperatures above 2,000° C. but reverses rapidly at somewhat lower temperatures. To produce magnesium by this reaction, therefore, it is necessary to cool the gas very rapidly to a temperature at which the rate of the reverse reaction becomes negligible. Several media for quenching the gas have been proposed, among which are hydrogen, natural gas, liquid hydrocarbons, and molten metals of low melting point.The results of a preliminary investigation on the use of molten lead as the quenching medium are summarized in this report. The work was done in 1941, when the threat of war made it imperative to investigate every process that offered possibilities for rapid expansion of domestic production of magnesium. Although the results were encouraging, other processes appeared to offer better prospects for immediate wartime development, so the work was not continued. Shortly before the investigation was completed, several patents on the use of low-melting metals for absorption of magnesium vapors appeared, 4/"

"The Berkeley safety station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines was recently informed that a geologist was killed through entering an abandoned 90-foot exploratory shaft without making a preliminary test of the shaft atmosphere. He was one of a geological party which was investigating coal lands in California. The only light that he carried into the shaft was an electric flash light. After he had descended a short distance, one of his associates on the surface heard him exclaim, ""This place is full of gas, I am coming up"", He had no more than finished the remark when he was seen to lose his grip on the ladder and fall down the shaft. He was apparently weakened from impure air in the shaft, and could no longer suppers himself on the ladder. When his body was recovered, it was found that his neck had been broken by the fall.This is the ;second recent accident that has been called to the writer's attention where a life has been lost in abandoned exploratory workings; the other fatality being in Minnesota where a mining engineer was overcome while sampling a shallow pit in iron-ore formations. This engineer was on the bottom of the shallow pit and died before help could reach him. It was generally supposed that each of these deaths were due to poisonous gases, but the writer believes, after reviewing the information available, that death in both instances may have been directly caused by deficiency in oxygen.Frequently in the daily press there are items relative to lives being lost through cleaning out old wells, and as a general rule such accidents are also caused by impure atmospheres.In every abandoned shaft or pit, or in fact, any old working where the air has been stagnant for a considerable time, there is always danger of oxygen deficiency, as the oxygen which originally comprised one-fifth of the atmosphere may be appreciably replaced by gases that do not support life, usually by carbon dioxide (black damp) or methane (fire damp). Much valuable information on the subject of mine atmospheres, mine gases, and the effect of oxygen deficiency onthe human system is contained in Miners' Circular 14, ""Gases Found in Coal Mines"" by G.F. Burrell and F. M. Seibert; Technical Paper 122, ""Effects of Oxygen Deficincy on Small Animals and Men"", by G. A. Burrell and G. G. Oberfell; and ''Chit of Properties of Mine Gees"" by G. A. Determine whether the total delay time in blasting may be safely increased beyond the currently permitted 0.5 s, without igniting a methane or methane-coal dust atmosphere and determine the minimum borehole spacing to avoid misfires. Approach At present, regulations limit the delay time used in short-delay blasting to a total of 0.5 s. Many in industry and government would like to see this total delay time increased to 1 5 to permit an increase in the number of different delays available for short delay blasting and an increase in the time between delay periods. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether the total elapsed delay time for blasting coal in underground mines could be safely expanded, with resulting improvements in productivity. The research was conducted at a surface mine in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Experimental shots were conducted in several pits, each of which had a 5-foot-high coal seam (Pitts-burg No.8) in a 50-foot highwall. The coal seam and a mobile gallery provided a good simulation of an underground coal face. The Bureau also examined the relationship between borehole spacing and misfires, to check on reports over the past few years that permissible explosives frequently misfire. These reports were not well documented, but were numerous enough to warrant investigation. Misfires of permissible explosives in an underground coal mine can be very hazardous; a burning cartridge of explosive may be ejected from a borehole and ignite the gas or dust in the mine, or a misfired cartridge in the muck pile may detonate during drilling and mucking operations, causing serious injuries.

This chapter explores leadership behavior in a life-threatening situation-fire in a coal mine. Previous chapters have discussed the database of interviews with miners who escaped from underground fires. Researchers raised questions such as: (1) Who led the miners out of the mine? (2) Did leadership make a difference in the escapes? (3) Was the escape leader the hierarchal leader? (4) What, if any, characteristics did the escape leaders possess? Subsequently, researchers analyzed the mine fire database from a group interaction perspective to address the leadership questions posed. Leadership has been one of the most researched topics of human behavior in the twentieth century. Studies have ranged from individual characteristics of leaders, to situational leadership, to interaction of leader and follower, suggesting different leadership techniques for different followers. The question that emerges here is: Are there different types of leadership that "fit" different kinds of situations? In a crisis situation like that examined in the present study, such information about leadership may significantly improve the chances of escape. To address these issues, the study team looked at the formal authority structure before each fire, considered leadership behavior or lack of leadership during the escapes, and examined those conditions associated with the emergence of leadership. According to Bardo [ 1978], "Emergent behaviors are those forms of action, and the norms, values and beliefs governing those actions, that rise out of the disaster situation." This chapter discusses previous studies in the area of crisis leadership and examines the emergent behaviors of leaders under duress during the mine fire escapes. Previous Studies The research on leadership during emergency situations has consisted mainly of simulation and field studies, with the principal concern being escape from building fires. During the 1980s, Hayashi [1988] created a computer simulation model to evaluate leader behavior in a fire. Although his purpose was to aid in planning for disaster prevention, his findings are relevant because they address the issue of situational leadership in crisis-where a leader changes his or her behavior to fit the situation. Essentially, his simulation model was designed to judge the actions and thinking of leaders. The simulation was tried by 101 subject/leaders 4 times each. The simulation consisted of amaze containing the leader, an informal leader, and 50 evacuees. Interestingly, the results indicated that the leader's actions were not dictated by circumstances. Any differences in behavior were attributed to the individual characteristics of each leader. The study also showed that the worse the situation became, the less individual

This report describes work done as part of a Bureau of Mines program to appraise the titanium-mineral resources of Idaho. The work included both field reconnaissance and a spot churn-drilling program. Much general information was available, as a result of earlier work done under the Western Radioactive Minerals Exploration Program conducted between 1950 and 1954 by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission. This particular exploration provided data as to the quantity of ilmenite (TiFe03) and accessory black-sand mineral concentrates in a number of placer deposits; however, at that time no tests were made to ascertain if the ilmenite was of marketable grade. The spot churn drilling was begun in the Gold Fork area of Long Valley, Valley County, Idaho (fig. 1), in August 1956 and was completed during October of the same year. Eleven holes (designated as the GF series on fig. 2) 35 to 45 feet in depth, aggregating 425 feet, were completed during this period. Data from other exploration drilling in 1951 was used in this report. The 13 holes in the G series shown in figure 2 were drilled by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission; the 7 holes of the DH series were drilled by the Bureau of Reclamation. The 20 holes, ranging from 16 to 140 feet in depth, totaled 1,625 feet. The combined number of all samples recovered was 422. Those taken in 1956 were composited for each drill hole and sent to the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Albany, Oreg., for analyses.

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. The time and amplitude statistics necessary to adequately describe electromagnetic (EM) noise in mines are illustrated through computer software techniques. They are 1) Allan Variance Analyses (AVA), 2) Interpulse Spacing Distributions (ISD), 3) Pulse Duration Distributions (PDD), 4) Average Crossing Rates (ACR) , and 5) Amplitude Probability Distributions (APD) . These statistics are illustrated using data taken from a rather large store of raw analog data recorded in operational mines. The curves generated for the illustrations characterize the noise environment in the mines from which the corresponding data were taken, and should aid in the design of reliable communication systems for such mines.

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)

The modified perchloric--EDTA method devised by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of copper in high-grade samples gives results that are more precise and more accurate than those from the classical sulfuric-iodometric method. Although the perchloric--EDTA method is more costly than the conventional method, the savings in time alone largely offsets this difference. Specifically, the modifications wade in the more conventional procedure comprise (1) use of perchloric acid instead of sulfuric acid for dissolution of copper minerals, (2) precipitation of copper as copper sulfide from dilute perchloric acid solution, (3) wet oxidation and dissolution of the precipitated copper sulfide, (4) use of larger amounts of indicator than those employed in the Schwarzenbach method of titrating low-tenor copper solutions with disodium ethylenedinitri10-tetraacetate and murexide indicator, and (5) use of refrigeration to partially stabilize aqueous solutions of the indicator.

The melting, casting, and welding of the Raney nickel alloy (42 pct Ni-58 pct A1), a methanation catalyst useful in coal gasification, were investigated. Melting was done in graphite crucibles by heating aluminum and adding nickel using a cryolite slag cover. Casting conditions were found to be optimum when the melt temperature ranged from 1,125° to 1,200° C and the mold temperature ranged from ambient to 250° C. Suitable mold materials were found to be quartz, heat-resistant glassware, olivine, and zircon. Welding of the alloy can be accomplished using tungsten inert gas process. Tensile strength of the alloy, in the as-cast condition, was found to be 2,000 1b/sq in with an impact strength of less than 1 ft-1b. The coefficient of thermal expansion was determined to be 18.4 x 10-6/° C after heat treatment.

The Great Eastern nickel deposit is located in the western foothills of the Virgin Mountains in the Copper King or Bunkerville district situated in the southeastern part of Clark County, Nev. It is covered by a group of eight claims that can be reached by turning south from U. S. Highway 91 at Riverside, Nev., and driving about 12.6 miles southeast over a winding mountain road, which rises from about 3,000 feet to 4,000 feet in elevation. The climate is dry, with only a small amount of rainfall throughout the year. The temperature ranges from hot during the summer to short periods of freezing weather during the winter months. The vegetation is of the desert variety, and no timber is available for mining. Water for mining purposes would have to be pumped from lower areas. A granitoid gneiss comprises the largest part of the rock outcrops. It has a steeply dipping foliation that strikes about N. 75° E. The gneiss was intruded by basic dikes, which in turn were intruded by pegmatite dikes. The ore occurs as lenticular bodies formed by the convergence of several pegmatite dikes within the main dike. The principal sulfide minerals are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite, which contain a small amount of nickel. Late in the year of 1939, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project on the Great Eastern property to extend or delimit the known mineralization. Underground work, consisting of 590 feet of drifting and crosscutting, was completed in September 1940, and 1,091 feet of diamond, drilling for downward extension of an ore body in the Lower edit, which was completed in February 1941.

The objective of this research was to (1) Further develop cyanobacteria mats' for metal-tolerance and cold-tolerance, (2) test them for durability in the field environment and (3) assess them for metal sequestering potential with actual and simulated field samples. Results show that mats performed well In the field and effectively sequestered metals from actual and simulated field samples. Metal uptake from Iron Mountain Hine samples was for Ins 87%, Cu and Cd 99%, Initial concentrations (mg/L) were Zn = 3,250, Cu , 279, Cd = 28. In solutions simulating the Gulf Tunnel drainage, Zn and Mn were effectively removed by mats immobilized on glass wool. Effluent water, after treatment, generally had a Ph of 7 .5-8.5. Al though the final metal concentrations in the mats 'harvested from the decontaminated water were only 1% or less, the actual mechanism of metal deposit was probably a mat-mediated alteration of the environmental conditions causing the metals to deposit outside the mat as oxides or carbonates. Bioflocculents, released by the mats, were likely involved in the metal-removal process.

In addition to explosion-proof enclosures, the IEC has published recommendations: 1. 79-2 Pressurized Enclosures, 2. 79-3 Intrinsic Safety, 3. 79-5 Sand-Filled Apparatus, 4. 79-6 Oil-Immersed Apparatus, and 5. 79-7 Increased Safety. All these are valid methods of electrical hazard reduction and find wide use in industries other than mining. Magison (52) discusses in detail each technique and, therefore, such an examination will not be repeated. Two other systems, lamina and labyrinth, are but variations of common explosion-proof enclosures and, therefore, will not be cov¬ered. (34,35,46,53,54,61) By examining other national authorities' opinion, the following will investigate each system's applicability to coal mining. Intrinsic safety applies to any system which is incapable of re¬leasing sufficient energy to be an electrical hazard. (49) Not one foreign country contacted disagreed with the concept, and they find these systems totally acceptable. Only South Africa does not accept oil-immersed apparatus, but no reasons were given. (62) Healy (27) stated that Queenlands, Austrailia would accept all techniques, yet some were still to be employed. Japan specifications allow for all but sand filled. (42,43) Increased safety or Protection Type "e" is an approach in hazard reduction in which special design considerations are applied to ensure an extremely low probability of electrical or mechanical breakdown

Because an economic method for preparing pure boron has not been developed, a program was started by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate existing techniques or to develop new methods for preparing the pure element. This report describes investigations directed toward the development of techniques for the preparation of pure boron by fused-salt electrolysis. Only two of the several fused-salt baths tested were satisfactory for the preparation of boron. These baths contained (1) potassium fluoride, lithium fluoride, potassium fluoborate and boron trioxide; and (2) potassium fluoride, potassium chloride, and boron trioxide. Of these two mixtures, the latter was more satisfactory. Elemental boron of from 90- to 95-percent purity and, in isolated cases, as high as 98-percent purity, was prepared from these two types of fused-salt baths. There appeared to be no distinct differences either in the yields or the purity of boron prepared at current densities ranging from 795 to 1,000 amperes per square foot. Current efficiencies were as high as 85 percent.

The Bureau of Mines recorded peak particle-velocity levels and vibration frequencies to determine the nature and intensity of ground vibrations for tunnel blast rounds at the NORAD Complex, Colorado Springs, Colo. Previous Bureau of Mines studies in quarries and underground mines had shown that scaling (dividing) the distance from the blast by the square root of the charge weight removed the effect of the various charge weights on vibration amplitudes. The analysis of variance tests performed on the NORAD vibration data, however, indicated that the cube rather than square root scaling exponent grouped the data more effectively. The empirical propagation equation, V = 560 (D/w1/3)-2.04, where V is the maximum peak particle velocity in inches per second, D is the distance from the blast in feet, and W is the zero-delay charge weight in pounds described the attenuation, with distance, of the particle velocities from the tunnel blasts in the Pikes Peak Granite of the NORAD Complex.

A lightweight fiberglass feed leg for hand-held pneumatic percussion rock drills has been fabricated and tested by the Bureau of Mines. Its lighter weight facilitates easier handling of the rock drill apparatus, thereby reducing the potential for back injury to the driller and in- creasing drilling productivity. Current hand-held feed leg drills of the same class are 50 pct heavier than the Bureau-devised feed leg drill, which is comprised of a reduced-noise drill and the fiberglass feed leg. In-mine tests of the fiberglass leg showed that its performance and cost are comparable to those of standard aluminum feed legs.

The chief object of the Electrical Section of the United States Bureau of Mines is the study of causes and means of preventing accidents resulting from the use of electricity in mines . A large part of this work for the last 20 years has been the inspection and testing of mining equipment under the provisions of schedules which give the minimum requirements considered essential for the safety of equipment intended for use at or near the working faces of dusty or gassy mines . During the first few years of this work , particular attention was paid to the explosionproof features of the various accessories such as motors , controllers , and other parts . The knowledge of the essentials necessary for safe designs of enclosures has since been augmented by field experience and by data obtained in testing a large number and variety of designs . With our present knowledge it would seem that a disproportionate stress was placed on making the various enclosures explosionproof , but not enough thought was given to the danger from wiring and connections outside of explosionproof enclosures . The list of equipment that has met minimum requirements for safety and has been approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines includes storage - battery locomotives , power trucks , drills , loading machines , conveyors , cutting machines , room hoists , pumps , concrete mixers , and rock-dusting machines . The wiring on some of the machines is comparatively simple and sometimes , except for the trailing cable , may be entirely within the explosionproof enclosures . In general , there is outside wiring between enclosures , and on the larger machines the wiring may be extensive and complicated . In considering the safety of wiring for mining machinery , attention must be given the severe service and unfavorable surroundings imposed by mining conditions . Some of the matters that require consideration are : ground . The lack of care of the exterior wiring to be expected in the average mine . The lack of adequate periodic inspection of the wiring . The absence of adequate facilities for satisfactory inspection and repairs under- The severe conditions of moisture , dirt , mechanical injury , and low voltage encountered in mining service .

1. The Pocahontas No. 3 and Pocahontas No. 6 ere the two most important beds in Mercer County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 188 million short tons as of January l, 1953. Of this total, 80 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.
