"This Bureau of Mines publication presents a statistical analysis of official U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) metal and nonmetal mine fire reports from 1950 through 1984, plus accounts of selected nonreportable fires (less than 30 min and no injury) and opinion data on fire hazards from mine safety directors. Fires were analyzed by time trends, ore type, ignition source, burning substance, location in mine, equipment involved, means of detection, duration, number of injuries and fatalities, mining method, and successful extinguishing agent. The leading ignition sources were electricity in underground fires and engine heat in reported surface fires. The most frequent burning substance was combustible liquids for all nonreportable fires, reported surface fires, and reported underground fires from 1978 to 1984. For underground fires reported prior to 1978, timber was the leading burning substance. Mobile equipment was the type most frequently involved in both underground and surface fires. Underground fires occurred most often in haulageway or drift areas, and reported surface fires occurred most often in plant and mill buildings, while most nonreportable surface fires occurred in other areas. The most common methods of extinguishment were water hose lines for reported fires and dry chemical handportable extinguishers for nonreportable fires. INTRODUCTIONIn support of the Bureau of Mines research on mine fire protection, two separate baseline studies on mine fire incidents have been prepared. The first study addressed coal mine fires. The results of that study are summarized in the Bureau's Information Circular 8830, ""A Statistical Analysis of Coal Mine Fire Incidents in the United States From 1950 to 1977."" This second report, addressing metal and nonmetal mine fires, is the companion to IC 8830. Together, these two reports provide a comprehensive, factual summary of the mining industry's fire experience.This report, like IC 8830, covers (1) MSHA fire incident reports, (2) records of nonreportable fires (less than 30 min and no injury), and (3) mine safety directors' opinions on fire hazards. The MSHA fire reports provide the most reliable, objective, and accurate historcial record of the major noncoal mine fires that occurred during the study period (1950 through 1984). However, MSHA fire reports alone understate the true magnitude of the fire problem because metal and nonmetal mines have been legally required to report fires to MSHA only since 1968. Although some fires were reported prior to 1968, doubtless a great many were not. Also, the reporting regulations that took effect in 1968 specify that only fires lasting 30 min or longer or involving an injury need to be reported. MSHA fire reports are thus limited in scope by MSHA's legal authority. In order to provide a more comprehensive data base, it was also necessary to gather and analyze mine company records of nonreportable fires."

Applicability of the fluosilicate sintering process to recovering beryllium from beryl-spodumene concentrate analyzing 1.4 to 3.7 percent BeO (10 to 30 percent beryl) was investigated. The work was one phase of a Bureau of Mines research program undertaken to assess applicability of conventional processes and to devise new procedures for treating various potential beryllium feed materials. Beryllium recovery of about 70 percent in a product of 99-percent BeO grade was achieved in treating 3D-percent beryl concentrate. The process consisted of (1) sintering a briquetted charge of concentrate, soda ash, and sodium fluosilicate for 3 hours at 750° C.; (2) extracting the soluble beryllium by multiple stages of water leaching; (3) adding caustic to the leach solution and boiling to hydrolyze and precipitate crude beryllium hydroxide; (4) dissolving the crude beryllium hydroxide in sulfuric acid and separating the solution from undissolved silica; (5) sulfidizing the acid beryllium solution to precipitate heavy metal impurities; (6) adding ammonia to the clarified sulfate solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide; and (7) converting the hydroxide to beryllium oxide (beryllia) by calcining at 900° C. About 60 percent more sodium fluoSilicate was required per unit of beryl than is used industrially in treating 10-to 12-percent BeO concentrate (80 to 90 percent beryl). Recovery decreased, and flux requirements increased, when treating concentrates containing less beryl.

These investigations were conducted to determine the feasibility of molten salt electrorefining of zirconium scrap, offgrade sponge, and alloys under contract number AT(11-1)-475 between the Atomic Energy Commission and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Offgrade zirconium sponge having a Brinell hardness of 169 can be refined by this technique to produce metal having, consistently, a Brinell hardness of less than 90. Also, zirconium alloy scrap, approximating zircaloy-2 in composition, can be refined to recover zirconium metal with a Brinell hardness of less than 100 that is essentially free of the major alloying elements. Analysis showed that the quantities of these elements were decreased as follows: iron from 0.27 to 0.002, tin from 1.36 to 0.001, nickel from 0.02 to 0.001, and chromium from 0.12 to 0.002 percent.

Hydrazine vapor is flammable in the absence of air at elevated temperatures and atmospheric pressure . The minimum concentrations of benzene , toluene , m- xylene , cumene , and n- heptane needed to inhibit flame propagation through vapor mixtures of hydrazine and hydrocarbon were determined at 125 ° C and atmospheric pressure . These concentrations can be correlated with either the heat of formation or the heat capacity of the hydrocarbon .

This chapter details the perspective from which collected data have been examined. The first part, intended primarily for lay readers, discusses several topics related to mining as an enterprise. Initially, the organizational functioning of atypical large mine will be described. It is the formal structure above a miner that decides the conditions of his or her work. A second point of concern is the technology itself An underground coal mine is a sociotechnical system, with workers and machines organized in particular ways during production. Third, general conditions and dangers underground will be described in detail. The physical environment of an operation is a powerful factor in the work life of miners. Fourth, a discussion of the process of formal training is given. During this training, a new worker is taught what the organization expects of him or her in the role of safe, productive, coal miner. Next, there are outside organizations that act as significant forces in the workplace. Examples include the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), State agencies, and the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). The roles of these entities will also be examined. The second part of this chapter will depict each study site as a concrete setting, so that findings can be interpreted in their proper context. The Organizational and Technical Nature of Mining A coal mine is a complex system. It is defined as all parts of a mining plant's property (both underground and surface) that contribute, under one management, to the extraction or handling of coal [American Geological Institute 1997]. As suggested, many functions that must be carried out at an operation are only indirectly related to coal mining and processing. Even the jobs that are di¬rectly related tend to be numerous and varied [Wallwork 1981]. According to Palowitch [1982], the chief reason for this sophistication is that "after more than two centuries of exploiting our coal resources, today's coal industry finds itself saddled with a horrendous legacy of human impairments and environmental damages which society demands be corrected." Now, the effects of government regulation are evident in every aspect of the mining industry. Any operation, if it is to survive, must be administered with an eye for social efficiency and accountability. Long-range planning is needed to ensure that the mine produces coal in a cost-effective manner. One of the first things that must be considered is location and method of access. To extract coal from an underground mine, a coalbed (or "seam") must be reached from the surface. The term "portal" is generally given to any entrance that provides access to a coal mine. Part I of this report outlines the Bureau's present in-house effort to all interested parties; in particular, potential contractors can refer to it when submitting USP's (unsolicited proposals), thus avoiding proposing research that duplicates work being performed by the Bureau.It is the policy of the Bureau of Mines to utilize as fully as possible the capabilities of the private sector in minerals research, and to that endPart II of this report outlines the Bureau's current projected contract research needs.The projects presented were planned at the beginning of the fiscal year and are subject to change based on emerging priorities and availability of funds. This paper describing the mining practices at the Ground Hog Unit of the Asarco Mining Co., a subsidiary of the American Smelting and Refining Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United Stated. The Ground Hog mine is at Vanadium in the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., about 1.0 miles east of Silver City and 2 ½ miles southwest of Santa Rita. A branch line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway connects Vanadium with Deming, about 45 miles southeast.

Control dust generated during mining in salt mines. Approach A machine-mounted exhaust ventilation system which moves with the cutting machine from place to place was developed. The system captures the dust at the face of the heading and exhausts it downstream of the heading in the crosscut. This helps cause fresh air from the crosscut to flow over the machine operator's position, and aids in keeping the dust cloud close to the face. How It Works The system consists of (1) a circular intake hood with a 10-inch slot extending 250 degrees around the base, bolted to the gearhead; (2) 20-inch-diameter wire-wound flexible ducting to connect the intake hood to the fan (25 ft. is allowed sufficient slack for bar movement); (3) an industrial exhaust fan capable of generating 10,000 cfm with 13 inches water gage pressure at 1435 rpm; and (4) 150 ft. of collapsible 24-inch tubing for the exhaust duct which is de-played and returned In each heading by the cutter operator and/or his helper.

Three -dimensional boundary value problems are difficult to solve. Indeed, while the separation of the scalar wave equation can be effected in 11 different coordinate systems, an analytic solution requires that the boundaries, both external and internal, possess the same symmetry as the coordinate system. Numerical methods are thus of great importance for the solution of such problems; however, despite the availability of high-speed, large memory digital computers , the solution to a significant three -dimensional problem is by no means trivial. It is unfortunate that the results reported here by Jones are invalid. Jones discusses a model in which a three-dimensional island lies off a linear coastline where all the interfaces lie in the coordinate planes in a Cartesian system. A downward plane em wave polarized with the electric field parallel to the linear coastline, and two of the islands coast, is incident downward. This, of course, requires that the incident electric field is perpendicular to the other faces of the idealized Cartesian island. The significant equation used by Jones for his finite difference calculations is [ ] where n2 = sµ? . is the conductivity, µ=µo is the permeability of the appropriate medium, and w is the angular frequency of a Fourier component of the incident field. We see that the displacement current term is omitted, which is an excellent approximation for the parameters of interest in this model. In the similar equation for the y- component of the diffusion equation, the same considerations which we are about to discuss are equally valid. It can be seen from the equation that the field components are related and thus any errors introduced will be propagated into all three components. "Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber-sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases soma of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The method of analysis was to test a large model containing potentially significant variables and on the basis of the results obtained, to reduce the model to one containing only the essential significant variables. This stepwise procedure of "scanning" a large proposed model and subsequently condensing the model consisted of two cycles of the same series of computational procedures. Data Preparation A majority of the variables measured were continuous over a specific range of values; for example, the variable "Width Ratio" varied in practice from 0.25 to 1.00. However, "dummy" values were assigned to certain operational variables in order that these varia¬bles would have numerical expression. The following variables were described in this manner. Hematite-to-magnetite reduction kinetics were investigated mainly in CO-CO2 atmospheres at temperatures ranging from 500° to 1,000° C. Reduction rates were measured with a thermobalance, which recorded the weight loss as the specimen was reduced. Reduction data on both synthetic and natural hematite spheres showed good linearity of ro [1-(1-R)1/3] with time, t, up to over 85 pct conversion to magnetite; the rate coefficient (k[L], cm/min) obtained from the linear portion of the plot was used to characterize the penetration rate of the hematite-magnetite interface. Gas composition, porosity, and silica content were major factors affecting the rate. Temperature dependency of the reaction rate was small, yielding a mean activation energy of about 3 kcal/mole. Silica additions increased the reaction rate, probably through an increase in the effective surface area and diffusion; however, above 900° C, silica can react to form fayalite. Experimental data showed that the linear thickening rate of the magnetite layer, normally evidence of a chemically controlled reaction, can also be indicative of a reaction controlled by both mass transfer and diffusion. Evidence from this study indicates that the dominant rate-controlling factor in the reduction of hematite to magnetite at high temperatures is transport in the gas phase.

"The oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase showed typical enzymatic kinetics. The oxidation was inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide, a glutathione reductase inhibitor. Superoxide dismutase had no significant effect on the oxidation, indicating non-involvment of the superoxide radical. The vanadate(V) reduction was found to be a one-electron transfer process. These results suggest a new pathway for vanadate(V) metabolism and a new function of glutathione reductase. Compounds of vanadium(V), such as NaV03 , exert potent toxic effects on a wide variety of biological systems (1-3). Despite intense current activity, however, the biochemical mechanism of vanadate(V) toxicity is still not well understood (1- 14). It is believed that one of the important pathways involves the oxidation (by vanadate(V)) of NAD(P)H (15, 16), but, to our knowledge, there has been no report of the identification of any vanadate(V) reductase. With a view to finding if there exists any vanadate(V) reductase, we have investigated the oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase. Glutathione reductase (GSSG-R)2 was selected because our previous studies have shown (17) that GSSG-R can act as a reductase for chromate(VI), which is isoelectronic with vanadate(V). We find that GSSG-R does indeed function as a NADPH-dependent vanadate(V) reductase, thus pointing to a new pathway for the metabolism of vanadate(V), as well as to this property for GSSG-R. MATERIALS AND METHODSSodium metavanadate (NaV03 ), henceforth vanadate, was purchased from Aldrich and its solution was always freshly prepared. The GSSG·R used was from bovine intestinal mucosa and was purchased from Sigma. The oxidation of NADPH was followed photometrically as the decrease in absorbance at 340 nm. The spin trap, 5,5-dimethyl- pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), was purchased from Aldrich and used without further purification, since very weak or no spin adduct signal was obtained from the purchased sample when used alone.ESR spectra were obtained at X-band (9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200 ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035A) and the microwave frequency was measured with a digital frequency counter (Hewlett-Packard, Model 5340A). An ASPECT 2000 computer was used for data storage and analysis. The concentrations given in the figure legends are the final concentrations. All experiments were carried out in the phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.2) and at room temperature."

A new mining law for the Recublic of Polend was promulgated by presiden- tial decree dated November 29, 1930, published in the Journal of Lews (Dzienni stex) No. E, text 654, December E, 1530, and wes to become effective January 1, 1932, in all Polend except Silesie. Its adoption in Silesia wes dependent pon the action of the Silesian Diet. As the new law is considered an im- provement over the old Austrian Mining Lew, which is operative in the Silesian districts of Bielsk and Cieszyn, and the Prussian Kining Law, which is opera- tive in Upper Silesia, no delay in its adoption for Silesin was looked for. This new law codifies the various juridical regulations pertaining to ines existing in different parts of the Polish Republic but does not include legislation with respect to the extraction of minerel oil, especially crude oil. Petroleum legislation was postponed to a later date in order to facili- tate codification in other fields. Koreover, as the oil industry exists in Galicia elone, deley will not be detrimental.

To increase metal recoveries and to minimize pollution by improved extraction technology, the Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrometallurgical technique to recover copper, lead, nickel, and cobalt from lead smelter mattes. The metals were converted from insoluble sulfides to soluble chlorides using a HCI-CI2-02 leaching system. Parameters studied in a 50-gallon, glass-lined reactor were the ratio of hydrochloric acid to chlorine, chlorine consumption per pound of matte, oxygen reaction pressure, and temperature. The matte material used contained, in percent, 19.7 Cu, 52 Pb, 2.9 Ni, 1.5 Fe, 0.38 Co, 0.19 As, 0.41 Zn, and 0.12 Cd. Extraction of Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, and Cd ranged from 92 to 98 pct, with concomitant extractions of Fe and As of <0.1 pct. The Cu and Pb were recovered as electrowon metals, while the Ni, Co, and Cd were recovered as mixed hydroxides.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch-and small-scale continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from Georgia, to determine the feasibility of recovering usable feldspar and quartz products by flotation. Two flotation methods were utilized for the removal of biotite and other iron-bearing minerals: One was in an acid-cationic circuit, and the other in an alkaline-anionic-cationic circuit. Feldspar was recovered using an acid-cationic method. To produce commercial-grade feldspar and quartz products it was necessary to employ either two sequential froth flotation circuits or one froth flotation circuit supplemented by wet-magnetic separation techniques to remove iron contaminants. Continuous flotation processing yielded a commercial-grade feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.8 Na20, 5.4 K20, and 1.10 CaO, with recoveries of 77.8, 70.3, and 64.4, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high-quality glass sand containing 98.2 percent SiO2 and 0.024 percent Fe2O3. About 42 percent of the quartz was recovered at glass sand specifications. An effective separation of, potash feldspar from the bulk feldspar concentrate was achieved by batch flotation in a mineral separation cell.

The energies of combustion of zirconium carbide and hafnium carbide were measured by combustion calorimetry and the heats of combustion and formation. of zirconium carbide and hafnium carbide were derived . The results are-- ZrC AH298.15 ( combustion) = -308.60 ± 0.55 kcal /mole , AH298.15 ( formation) -47.0 ± 0.6 kcal /mole , AH298.15 = HfC (combustion ) = -306.08 ± 0.20 kcal/mole , AH298.15 ( formation) -52.3 ± 0.4 kcal /mole . = INTRODUCTION This report contains the results of calorimetric measurements to obtain the heats of formation of zirconium carbide ( ZrC) and hafnium carbide ( HfC) . The work was conducted as part of a Bureau of Mines program for determining the heats of formation of oxides , carbides , and nitrides by combustion calorimetry . Combustion calorimetry is one of the most precise calorimetric techniques . The chief obstacle to obtaining accurate heat of formation values for carbides , and the chief reason for the variation in the results of different investigators , is the lack of purity of the carbide samples . Corrections for impurities always involve assumptions which lead to uncertainties . In general , a large impurity correction is accompanied by a large uncertainty in the final result .

This surveillance report summarizes data on work-related fatal and nonfatal injuries, illnesses, and hazardous exposures in the mining industry for the 10-year period 1986-1995. The term "surveillance," as used in public health, may be new to many readers of this report. With regard to occupational safety and health, the goal of surveillance is to describe the occurrence of work-related injuries, illnesses, and known hazardous exposures; to identify new hazards that may occur due to the introduction of new technology or other factors; and to assess the effects of preventive measures designed to improve worker safety and health. Surveillance provides an overall picture, which can be used to focus resources on areas most in need of prevention programs or further research. Surveillance generally requires the use of multiple sources of data, all of which have their own strengths and limitations. Surveillance in the U. S. mining industry is complicated by the fact that U.S. national data systems that provide information on mining are based on two different definitions of the mining industry. One is established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the other by the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System [Office of Management and Budget 1987] and the 1980 U. S. Bureau of the Census (BOC) Classification System [U.S. Bureau of the Census 1982]. The mining industry as defined by MSHA is based on the regulatory jurisdiction of that agency. Reporting requirements for injuries, illnesses, and workplace exposures are stipulated under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977. Of note is that the oil and gas extraction industry falls outside of MSHA jurisdiction. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was charged with enforcement in the oil and gas industry under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Under the SIC, the definition of mining covers the extraction of naturally occurring minerals, including liquids (petroleum), gases (natural gas) and solids (coal, metal, and nonmetallic minerals). Exploration and development of mineral properties are also included in the SIC definition of the mining industry. The SIC was developed by the Office of Management and Budget for use in classifying establishments based on the type of economic activity in which they are engaged and serves as the industry classification standard for all establishment based Federal economic statistics. This classification is important for occupational safety and health surveillance because it also serves as the industry classification system for all data on work-related injuries and illnesses collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The U.S. Bureau of the Census uses an industry coding scheme similar to that used by the SIC. For the mining industry, the categorization is identical in both systems. Death certificate data made available by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) are categorized under this system. Death certificate data are particularly important for surveillance of mortality from work-related illnesses. Key differences between the SIC/BOC categorization system and the MSHA system can be summarized as follows: • MSHA excludes the oil and gas industry, which is classified as part of the mining industry under SIC/BOC. • MSHA excludes work that is done off of mine property; work off of mine property is included under SIC/BOC if it is performed by an establishment falling into one of the SIC/BOC mining industry codes. • MSHA includes mine-associated mills and processing plants; these are classified under the manufacturing industry, rather than mining, according to the SIC/BOC coding structure. Since the data collected by MSHA and the data collected by BLS and NCHS using the SIC/BOC classification system are both important sources of information on the mining industry and in many cases serve different purposes, data from both systems are presented in this report. In general, data using the SIC/BOC system are comparable across U.S. industries and should be used when comparing mining to other U.S. industries. Much of the data in this report are presented in the form of frequencies or rates. A frequency provides only a count of the number of cases without providing any information about the risk of occurrence. Rates provide an estimate of the risk of injury or illness. The reader is cautioned, however, that rates based on small numbers can be unstable; thus, any inferences should be drawn with care. In this report, no rates are presented for groups in which there were fewer than three cases. The incidence of most injury and illness conditions differs by age, sex, and race. For this reason, data in many surveillance reports are adjusted for these demographic factors. It was not possible to do this for most of the rates in this report because information on demographics was not available. With the exception of the proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs), all data presented are unadjusted. A detailed account of the sources of data is in appendix A. The methods used in data selection and analysis are described in appendix B.

Approach Diesel research is divided into four primary areas: exhaust aerosol measurement, particulate control, gaseous emission control, and chemical and biological characterizition of particulate matter. Diesel research is frequently cosponsored by industry; collaborative research ventures between industry, academia, other government agencies, and the Bureau arc common. Diesel research at the Bureau is conducted in the diesel engine research facility at the Bureau?s Twin Cities Research Center (TCRC). This facility is a state-of-the-art laboratory capable of performing emissions testing, exhaust control evaluations, and safety tests. Background Exposure of mine workers to airborne contaminants from diesel engine exhaust is potentially harmful. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has recommended that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as "a potential occupational carcinogen" and that ?reductions in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the risk." The U.S. Mine Safely and Health Administration (MSHA) convened an Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment and is beginning to implement its recommendations, which cover health, safety, and certification and approval issues surrounding the use of diesels underground. In January 1992, MSHA published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to regulate diesel particulate matter in underground mines.

"In accident prevention, a study of statistical data is necessary to determine primary causes of accidents to devise means to eliminate causes at the original sources. Explosions in coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ending December 31, 1931, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents; they constituted 16.2 per cent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines and 8.4 per cent of all fatal accidents in anthracite mines. A study of coal-mine explosions in Pennsylvania, with approximately 160,000 men employed in anthracite mines and about 145,000 in bituminous mines or about 205,000 out of -the approximately 525,000 men employed in all coal mines of the United States, should give information of value to all persons endeavoring to reduce or eliminate coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews explosions of gas or dust or of both in the coal mines of Pennsylvania to show the hazard of gas and dust, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to emphasize the efficacy of explosion-preventive measures.The data published annually by the State Department of Mines and of the United States Bureau of Mines were used in compiling the tables of explosions. Through the cooperation of W. H. Glasgow, secretary, Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, and his assistants, many doubtful cases were clarified, so that as far as recorded the history is comparatively complete. Figures used in compiling some of the tables were furnished by W. W. Adams, chief statistician, demographical division, United States Bureau of Mines.Anthracite in the Wyoming Basin of Pennsylvania was used locally by gunsmiths in 1755, by blacksmiths in 1769, and as domestic fuel in 1808.Mining and shipments developed slowly between 1806 and 1812, but more rapidly after that.Early mining along the outcrops gave essentially no trouble from gas, but by 1870, when State inspection was established, explosions were frequent; ventilation was crude and accumulations of gas were generally ""brushed"" or burned out.Table 1 lists 1,232 ignitions and explosions of gas in anthracite mines from 1870 to 1932, inclusive, every one of which was accompanied by loss of life. Some details are given of 110 representative cases in which five or more lives were lost or in which it appeared that some violence was present.During the period 1870 to 1932, inclusive, gas explosions caused 2,213 fatalities, or an average of about two deaths for each ignition or explosion. Records are not available as to the number injured in these and in other explosions where no deaths occurred, but from a study of explosion reports it appears probable that the number injured exceeds the number killed. In the 110 cases described, 599 were killed and 294 were injured. As shown in Table 2, fatalities from gas explosions averaged 8.3 percent of the total fatalities in Pennsylvania anthracite mines from 1870 to 1931, varying from 6.0 percent in 1931 to 13.1 percent in 1927."
