Over 2 million tons of steel furnace dust containing approximately 100,000 tons of zinc and 10,000 tons of lead are produced each year. Recycling of the dusts would conserve mineral resources, lessen land area requirements for disposal, decrease pollution problems, and aid in solving our balance of payment problem. Steelmaking dusts can be pelletized and thermally treated to remove lead and zinc and to reduce the iron oxide to form metallized pellets. In laboratory tests more than 99 pct of the zinc and 85 pct of the lead was volatilized from the dust by roasting at 1,000° C in carbon monoxide. The volatilized material can be collected and treated further for lead and zinc recovery. Reduction and volatilization of over 95 pct of the zinc and most of the lead was achieved by roasting self-reducing mixtures of steel furnace dusts and high carbon steelmaking wastes in an inert atmosphere at 1,100° C. Over 80 pct of the iron in the resulting pellets was metallized.

In the course of a series of investigations on vanadium deposits of the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected many hundreds of samples for chemical analysis. As uranium is often associated with these vanadium minerals, they were also analyzed for uranium, which was pound to be absent in a large percentage of the samples. Since the usual methods for determining uranium are laborious and time-consuming it is very desirable to have some simple qualitative test that can be applied prior to a quantitative analysis to determine whether uranium is present or absent and thus save the time and expense of applying the quantitative analysis to the large proportion of samples containing no uranium. To be acceptable, the test should be specific for cranium, sensitive enough to detect small amounts of uranium, and. simple enough to make it worthwhile to apply. The available methods for detecting uranium lacked one or more of the desired characteristics. Eventually, however, a method was worked out that satisfied all the requirements. This method is probably more specific and sensitive than the usual qualitative methods for uranium, and its simplicity and speed of application make it ideal for testing samples prior to quantitative analysis.

The Bureau of Mines determined the composition of the vapors liberated during thermal decomposition of aluminium nitrate nonahydrate. Small samples were heated from room temperature to 5500 C with initial heating rates from 500 to 2000 C/min. Gases were rapidly swept away from the heated chamber with Ar and subjected to immediate analysis in order to minimize reaction between the components. In addition to H20, four N-containing compounds were identified: HN03, N02, NO, and N20. Nz could not be determined in the presence of the nitrogen oxides, and at-tempted separation from the oxides led to the formation of more nitrogen. Relative amounts of each component were found to vary over a period of time; however, total amounts measured with different heating rates were reasonably constant and were typically as follows: 84.2 pct HN03, 7.1 pct N02, 4.3 pct NO, and 4.2 pct N20. HN03 and NO were determined from chemical reactions with a permanganate solution, N20 was measured with a mass spectrometer, and NO2 was measured with a spectro-photometer. Details of the methods used are described. Since NO2 and NO can readily be converted to HN03, about 96 pct of the N from the decomposition can be recovered as HN03

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (sec. 303 (b)) stipulates that no working section of the mine shall contain more than 0.5 percent carbon dioxide and no harmful quantities of other noxious or poisonous gases such as the oxides of nitrogen. The concentration of methane should at all times be maintained below one percent. A split of air returning from any working section shall contain no more than 1.5 percent of methane (sec. 303 (i) (2)) and air that has passed by an opening of any abandoned area shall not be used to ventilate any working place in the coal mine if such air contains more than 0.25 percent of methane (sec. 303 (j)). Methane concentration in the returns from the bleeder entries should not exceed 2.0 percent (sec. 303 (i) (3)), and no air that has passed through an opening which is inaccessible for examination shall be used to ventilate any active areas. While the air quantity requirements alone can easily be met, the governing condition in most mines is the dilution requirements for quality control. A sufficient quantity of air is required to render harmless and carry away noxious and respirable pollutants. In recent years, changes in coal extraction methods, rates of advance, location of available reserves, position of prominent methane sources and horizons, and geological sequences have contributed sig¬nificantly to alterations in rates, patterns and character of numerous methane emissions. Gas production of 10 to 15 million standard cubic feet per day is not uncommon from deep mines (Cervik, 1969). The respirable dust standard in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is designed to prevent disability and death from coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Beginning June 30, 1970, the operators of coal mines were required to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the active workings at or below 3.0 milligrams of dust per cubic meter of air. The standard is reduced to 2.0 milligrams per cubic meter after Dec. 30, 1972. This paper presents the equipment and procedures used by the coal mine operators in implementing the respirable dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare and shows the effect of the law, during the first year, on the reduction of dust levels in selected mines. The system employed by the Bureau of Mines for analyzing and processing the dust samples is also presented.

The Bureau of Mines carbonized 21 coal samples from Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties, Pa., at 900° C, using the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and determined yields of products and physical properties of the coke. These samples represented high-volatile A Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport and medium-volatile Upper Freeport and Lower Kittanning coals. About 20 percent of all coals presently carbonized in commercial coke ovens in the United States are mined in Greene and Washington Counties, principally from the Pittsburgh seam. Sulfur content of the Pittsburgh coals in these counties is moderately high (1.0 to 3.2 percent) but, because of extremely large reserves, accessibility to eastern United States markets and excellent blending characteristics to yield strong coke, these counties will continue to be an important source of metallurgical coals in the future. Most coals from the other seams contained more than 2 percent sulfur, which would limit their use as metallurgical coals.

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. "As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity.Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nations underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-mid-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.IntroductionThe ultimate goal for any coal mining company is to effectively use its human and financial resources to maximize its profits through the extraction of its reserves. Although recent workforce reductions in the industry have resulted in a more efficient use of labor and increased productivity, there comes a point in time when further reductions in the numbers of workers in each operating section are impossible with existing equipment. For example, Farinelli and Bise (1987) found that labor cost constituted 62% - 73% of the cost per ton of coal at the mining section, with a minimum crew size. Thereafter, efforts to increase productivity must focus on more efficient mine plans and technology.The fact that an increase in productivity can be realized by reducing non-productive time (change-out and tram time) and converting it to productive time has been known and demonstrated for quite some time. What has not been demonstrated frequently is the quantification of the potential productivity increase of currently emerging technology or ""add-on"" equipment. It is one thing to be able to say that a piece of equipment will make an operation more productive, but it is another thing to be able to quantify the productivity increase that will justify the purchase of the new equipment. Not only is a financial benefit possible in room-and-pillar mining with an increase in productivity, but a decrease in the time necessary to develop a longwall panel can also occur.The purpose of this paper is an analyze the impacts of a changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to several scenarios incorporating emerging technology. To do this, four cases will be developed. A base case, consisting of the typical manner in which continuous-miner sections are currently operating, is compared to three layouts incorporating: (1) flooded-bed scrubbers on radio remote-controlled continuous miners, (2)a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters, and (3) a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters used in conjunction with a continuous-haulage system."

This report describes an instrument developed by the Bureau of Mines as an improved device for examining roof rock in bolt holes. The unit consists of a commercially available fiberoptic unit adapted for use as a flexible stratascope. Field testing in both metal and coal mines has shown the instrument can be easily transported and used by a single operator. The size and flexibility of the instrument eliminate the need for specially drilled holes.

This report describes the development of a dynamic strain gage and a companion amplifier and recording camera -an apparatus designed to pick up and record the strain waves produced in rock by a nearby explosion. Also included in the report is a discussion of the relationships connecting the strain with the displacement, velocity, and acceleration for both plane and spherical waves. The proposed tests for which the strain gages were intended required making measurements in solid rock, a factor that necessitated the development of a gage that could be inserted and anchored in a small-diameter diamond-drill hole. The restriction on the diameter of the drill hole is required so that the presence of the hole in the medium will not influence the propagation of the strain wave. The gage should respond with fidelity to the frequencies present in a wave pulse generated by the nearby detonation of a small quantity of high-velocity explosive. Preliminary tests showed that this frequency range extends from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s. or greater. Also, the gage should be capable of measuring strains ranging from a few micro-inches per inch to several thousand micro-inches per inch. Other desirable design specifications included a low gage output impedance to permit the use of long cables, and a low gage cost, particularly in view of the fact that for the final design none of the gages can be recovered from the medium.

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on an argillaceous Michigan copper ore and mill tailing to determine the feasibility of leaching with acidified ferric sulfate solutions. The ore and tailings, containing 1.24 and 0.24 percent copper, respectively, were from the White Pine Copper Co., Ontonagon County, Mich. The investigation showed that ferric sulfate leaching of the ore and tailings followed a predictable pattern. Thus, with 4 hours of leaching, up to 58 percent of the copper in the ore was extracted, but prolonged leaching (2 to 3 weeks) was required to dissolve more than 90 percent of the copper. Similarly, about 50 percent of the copper in the mill tailings sample was dissolved in a few hours, but 8 days or more were required for extractions of over 90 percent.

Develop and evaluate a mechanical position and heading system (MPHS) that provides information about underground mining machine position and heading to aid in the remote positioning of mining machines during face maneuvers. Background While great improvements have been made in mineworker safety, progressive technology continues to create a safer, better working environment for miners by keeping them away from the dangerous face area. In maintaining such high standards of safety, the Bureau is investigating remote, computer-assisted operation of mining systems for underground, highwall, and surface mining applications. A key component of computer-assisted operation is a guidance system. Since there are no guidance systems on any commercial continuous mining machines, the Bureau itself developed and tested the mechanical position and heading system (MPHS). The MPHS is based on linear position transducers (LPT's), and operates on principles of triangulation to provide machine position (xy coordinate), and orientation in the xy plane (yaw or heading). These data are needed in order to keep the continuous mining machine in proper alignment before and during the cutting cycle. The MPHS theory development is in three parts: characterize the sensors used and their configuration; select and define the navigation reference frames; and derive a closed-form solution for determining the position and beading from sensor information. Application of the MPHS theory required the development of hardware, software, and system interfaces.

This chapter includes tables from 1984 that were not available in time for publication of the 1984 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1985. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1985 was estimated at $23.2 billion, an increase of $0.07 billion over the value for 1984. This is the third consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a decrease in 1982, the value for each year has increased since 1971, or 13 out of 14 years. However. while the value of industrial minerals production continued to grow, reflecting the growth of the domestic economy, the value of metal mine production decreased in 1985 by 6%. This drop was more than offset by a 3% increase in the value of industrial minerals production because the value of industrial minerals produced was more than three times larger than the value of metals. The decrease makes 1986 the third year in the past 5 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States where production continued to lag behind growing world production. Domestic production of such major commodities 88 aluminum, copper, iron ore, phosphate rock, and zinc continued to decline owing to a number of international and domestic factors. Gold continued to be the most active commodity in the domestic metal mining industry. Despite lower prices, gold output increased to 2.5 million troy ounces, a 19% increase over that of 1984. The estimated annual production capacity of new gold mines beginning production exceeded 1 million ounces.

"Coal washing commands the thoughtful attention of a steadily incre in number of people. Clean coal is not merely a luxury but is rapidly becoming a necessity in some industrial operations.Coal seams in the Northeast are rarely free from ""bone"" and shale or clay partings which vary from a fraction of an inch to several feet in thickness. Nearly all of the coal measures are folded and faulted, the coal seams dip at various angles, and in some cases are badly broken. In mining these seams fragments of the roof and floor, as well as partings of impur-ities within the seams, unavoidably become mixed with the coal, so that the raw coal as it comes to the surface often contains as much as 50 per cent, by weight of waste.At the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Seattle, the washing of this coal in order to improve it for commercial use has been studied. Since the process of coal-washing depends upon differences in specific gravity between the clean coal and, its associated impurities, the first problem undertaken was that of determining the specific gravity of the clean coal and of each parting of impurity contained in a large number of representative seams.It was found that the freshly-mined coal is practically saturated with water, this being observed in determining the effect of moisture content upon the specific gravity of the coal particles, selected from samples of coal varying from low-grade subbituminous up to semianthracite, all of which are found in the State of Washington. The specific gravity values determined for the cleanest particles varied from 1.28 to 1.35; in general, the higher the rank of the coal the hither the specific gravity."

One phase of the research and development work on synthetic liquid fuels conducted by the Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va. in cooperation with West Virginia University deals with the purification of synthesis gas.2/ Most of the experimental studies on gas purification have been directed toward the removal of organic sulfur from gas, either catalytically or by adsorption with activated carbon. An important part of the purification program has been the development of suitable analytical methods for determining organic sulfur compounds. As the total sulfur content, organic and inorganic, of purified synthesis gas should not exceed 0.1 grain per 100 cubic feet, the need for accurate analytical methods is apparent. It is also apparent that such methods must be rapid if one wishes to evaluate various processes for removing sulfur from gas. The organic sulfur found in most gas produced from coal is usually present as carbon disulfide, carbon oxysulfide, methyl and ethyl mercaptans, and thiophene, with the exception of thiophene, the remaining organic sulfur compounds respond similarly to catalytic treatment and can be removed effectively. Not only does thiophene resist most catalytic treatment, but it poisons some catalysts, rendering them ineffective in removing the other forms of organic sulfur.

Like most industries, the refining industry has in recent years been confronted with the problem of a decreased martin of profit, due both to a general lowering of prices and to rising costs. This has resulted in accelerating a program of increased efficiency an evidenced by improved methods and the installation of equipment designed to affect a number of economies hitherto regarded as unimportant. Perhaps the most important of these has been that of fuel economy for, as is not often realized, a refinery consumes about one-tenth as much fuel as it produces. A recently completed canvas., made by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of determining the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States, showed the following outstanding points, (1) a decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1926 of approximately 4,000,000 barrels as compared with 1925; (2) a small decrease in the use of coal; (3) a material increase in the use of gas, both natural gas and refinery gas; and (4) a considerable increase in the use of petroleum coke.

Increased activity in the beneficiation of taconite, particularly the magnetic variety, has shown the need for more information on the rate of oxidation of magnetite to hematite. This oxidation occurs in the pelletizing step of the beneficiation process. Magnetic taconite is an intimate association of magnetite and a siliceous gangue. It must be ground to approximately 70 to 30 percent minus 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite from the gangue. With sufficient liberation, magnetic concentration will yield a product high enough in iron and low enough in silica for blast-furnace use. The magnetic concentrate must be agglomerated before it can be used in a blast furnace. Agglomeration is the general term applied to all methods of compacting or consolidating fine iron-oxide materials, sintering and pelletizing being the two most common methods. Sintering is clone on a Dwight-Lloyd or Greenawalt sintering machine. Pelletizing consists of balling fine, moist oxide in a rotating drum, followed by baking at .a temperature below that of incipient fusion to develop a permanent bond within each pellet. The magnetic concentrate from taconite is too fine for good sintering practice but fine enough for good pelletizing practice.

"The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural as through high-pressure pipe lines. 4 This report deals with that part of the study involving the design of pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling lire may or may not extend the entire length &f the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line.As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance, from the developed as fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural-gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. It is believed that to a large extent future expansion in the natural—gas industry will consist of paralleling the present lines. The several formulas given in this report have been developed to aid in the design of such systems. Curves and tables were prepared from these formulas to simplify the calculations materially and to facilitate determination of the sizes of pine to be used in paralleling various diameter lines to give the most economical design. The formulas are presented without detailed derivations, as a complete report on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines is being prepared which will contain the derivations of these formulas. Examples included here show the detail of application of the several formulas to problems of design of parallel lines."

Application of a new chemical spray in a mercury mine in which ore rich in native metal was causing salivation among the miners has given such favorable results that it is believed the process will be useful in other mines and perhaps in some plants where similar conditions exist. The process was originated by Merle Randall, professor of chemistry at the University of California. GENERAL PROBLEM The presence of native quicksilver in mines from which the metal is produced has long been a source of trouble and danger to the workers. Men have been sickened and some of them have been disabled by exposure to the vapors present (even in workings that were well-ventilated by ordinary standards) and to contact with dust, dirt, and moisture with which the finely divided quicksilver was mixed. Where the ore was rich and this exposure was considerable men were able to work only a few days or weeks; where the exposure was less they were weakened and subject to ailments often attributed to other causes.
