[At the majority of mines where flame safety lamps are used either as working lights or as a means of detecting gas, no check it made on this condition of the various parts of the lamp and their assembly other than a visual ink inspection. Although this inspection should be made carefully in view of tae serious consequence that may follow Vie use of a faulty lama, In many instances the inspection is of a perfunctory nature. The Bureau of Mines has therefore designed a small box or gallery for testing lamps for defects and improper assembly before they are taken into the mine. The test simulates the condition when a lamp is extinguished by its introduction into an explosive mixture and the operator attempts to relight the wick while the lamp contains the explosive mixture. This test is more rigorous than merely subjecting a lighted lamp to an explosive methane-air mixture. In the latter test the products of combustion tend to blanket the propagation of flame from within the lamp to the exterior, especially if there are defects at the top of the gauzes. Moreover, when the lighted lamp is subjected to an explosive methane-air mixture the methane builds up slowly within the lamp until the lower inflammable limit is attained, whereupon a feeble explosion occurs within. If the nonlighted lamps is first filled with the methane-air mixture that gives the maximum violence and is than ignited, the dampening effect of products of combustion is obviated and the strain on defects is]

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, "I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated" (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. In investigating general problems that relate to the fuel resources of this country, and in testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government, the Bureau of Mines has given considerable attention to the efficiency and economic value of producer-gas power plants. Government inquiries during the past eight years not only have shown a very low fuel consumption per horsepower-hour for these plants but have demonstrated conclusively the possibility of utilizing commer- cially low grades of bituminous coal, lignite, and peat in plants prop- erly designed for the use of these fuels. The anthracite plant has been recognized as a commercial possibility for several years, although the cost of the fuel used has in general restricted these plants to com- paratively small units. The commercial development of the producer-gas power plant in the United States has been largely within the past six or eight years. In 1909 the United States Geological Survey published in a bulletin entitled "Recent Development of the Producer-Gas Power Plant in the United States" a list of producer-gas power-plant installations. The data presented in that bulletin showed a strong development in this field and led to much conjecture as to the future of this type of power. Owing to the extensive introduction of the steam turbine, however, many persons predicted the almost immediate doom of the producer-gas plant. In addition to the inroads made by this formida- ble rival, the interest of the gas-engine enthusiasts became centered to such an extent in the oil engine that the gas producer was relegated to second place by many and absolutely abandoned by some. During the past three years the belief of many who were formerly firm be- lievers in the gas producer has been that this type of power has reached its height of development in this country and that from a commercial standpoint it can no longer be regarded as a complete success. This report describes aperiments by the Bureau of Mines and reviews theoretical aspects of the use of organophosphate solvent extraction for recovering beryllium from sulfate leach liquors. The leach liquors were prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of lime-sintered low-tenor beryl flotation concentrates. The experimental work on sulfate leach liquors showed that the acidic esters of organophosphates extracted beryllium slowly but in preference to aluminum. Three common alkylphosphoric acids, di- (2-ethylhexyl) (EHPA), heptadecyl (HDPA), and dodecyl (DDPA), in order of decrmsing selectivity, yielded a partial separation of beryllium from aluminum.

A survey of firefighting facilities and practices in coal mines conducted by the Bureau of Mines3/ showed such variations in equipment and apparent attitude toward fire protection that a comparison with other industry seemed advisable. Although other industry is confined generally to surface operations and the hazards probably are not as great, the same general methods of extinguishment are employed, so that the cost and protection at least should be comparable. An investigation of industry other than mines revealed a generally greater emphasis placed on fire-combating equipment, fire-brigade training, fire-fighting facility inspection, and fire-hazard elimination, as well as a greater average expenditure for fire protection.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied solvent extraction as a means of concentrating the mineral components in coal. Solubilities of a number of American coals were determined using abietic acid as a solvent. The effect of rank on solubility was investigated, and maximum solubility was found with coals of intermediate rank. Vitrinite is the most soluble petrographic component; fusinite, micrinitc, and exinite are nearly insoluble. Spore exines also have a low solubility. Abietic acid is a hydrogen donor and reduces pyrite to ferrous sulfide. Mild hydrogenation of high-molecular-weight fragments of the coal structure to those of lower molecular-weight probably contributes to the solvent action. Even where solubility of the coal substance exceeds 90 percent, contamination of the mineral matter with coal makes identification of the mineral components difficult. Further separation might be possible by the application of float and sink techniques to the residue. INTRODUCTION Work n the solvent extraction of coal is conducted to recover commercially useful products and to characterize coal;. and obtain information on their structure. Some coals, particularly those of low rank, contain waxes, resins, and humic acids which can be removed by solvent extraction and find varied industrial uses. In World War II, solvent extraction of coal was conducted on a commercial scale in Germany to obtain a low-ash feed material for hydrogenation and to produce electrodes carbon for the aluminum industry.4 5/

Wire saws have been used for many years in European travertine, marble, and slate quarries. This method of sawing found very limited use in America until 1927 when it was accepted as standard equipment in elate quarries in Pennsylvania where it has been remarkably successful. Details of its operation in slate have been published in a recent bureau report.3 The very limited extent to which the wire saw has been employed in limestone and marble quarries in the United States and the seeming lack of interest even in experimental work to determine its advantages are difficult to explain in vied of its wide use in cutting similar rocks in Europe and its unquestionable advantages in sewing slate in America. In order to encourage improvement in quarry practice the United States Bureau of Mines has endeavored to obtain information as to the extent to which wire saws are used in Europe together with data on the rate and cost of sawing. The information at hand is by no means complete either in territory covered or in details of operation; it nevertheless brings out certain significant features that may be of interest and advantage to quarrymen in the United States.

Several processes being developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide new and more efficient uses for coal require practical methods for removing dust from hot gases. Filters provide such means. The efficiency of filters made of aluminum silicate fibers and porous stainless steel was determined. The results obtained with the fibers were previously reported.5 In this investigation tests were made with three porosities of stainless steel filter material (grades C, D, and E) at a gas flow of 1,000 std. c.f.h./sq. ft. of filter, temperatures of 75° and 1,000° F., and dust loadings (as represented by cumulative dust fed) of 100, 1,000, and 10,000 gr./sq. ft. of filter. Pressure drop during the runs ranged from 0.1 to 21 in. of mercury, and dust removal from 25 to 99.93 pct. Filters having the finest pores gave the greatest pressure drop and percentage of dust removal; however, their dust-holding capacity was slightly lower. Usually, their ability to remove a higher percentage of dust at the same pressure drop more than compensated for the slightly lower dust-holding capacity. With increase in temperature, for the same weight rate of flow of gas, the pressure drop increased and the percentage of dust removal decreased. The effect of temperature was probably due to the accompanying change in the linear velocity and viscosity of the gas.

Descriptions are given of the techniques and apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines for determinations of flat plate ignition quenching distance and minimum spark ignition energy. The descriptions include discussions of reaction vessel materials, shapes, and sizes and discussions of electrode configurations. Spherical, hemispherical, or flat plate electrodes are recommended. The preferred metal in electrodes and electrode supports is stainless steel; the flat plate electrodes incorporate flanges of low electrical conductivity which are most frequently formed from glass. Various aspects of the electrical energy supply system are discussed and suitable arrangements of components are indicated. The concept of a thermal relaxation time is introduced as a basis for the choice of a minimum interspark time during the testing of a gas mixture. The following indicate the varied conditions under which these tech were utilized: Mixture pressures between 10 mm Hg and 45 psig, initial temperatures between -78° and +198° C, and gaseous mixtures representing wide ranges of cL.. D reactivity and corrosiveness. Minimum ignition energies were determined which varied from about 10-7 joule to nearly 103 joule.

Many mines are opened into the coal beds by shafts; and, at some of these operations, the same cages or skips that are used for hoisting coal also are used for transporting men into and out of the mines. At some mines, separate man-and-material shafts are maintained, and the cages in these are utilized for transporting men and supplies only. In most instances, these cages are operated either singly or in pairs by a hoisting engine installed in a building near the shaft. Single ropes from the tops of the cages pass over bull wheels on the head frame to either electrically or steam-driven hoisting engines that require engineers to operate them. There are records of several instances where hoisting engineers have become incapacitated suddenly while hoisting men, and the passengers on the cages were killed or injured. Where the same cages are used for hoisting cars of coal and for lowering and hoisting men, especially where self-dumping cages or skips are used, safety pre¬cautions must be taken, such as providing steel bonnets for the cage deck, enclosed sides, adequate handholds, gates for closing the end openings, safety catches, and locking devices to prevent accidental dumping. Some of the newer hoisting installations are of the elevator type; where an operator rides in the cage in the same manner as an elevator operator in a building. These cages have single or multiple decks and are primarily for transporting men; but, in some instances, supplies also are transported. They are a great improvement over the installations where the same cages are used for hoisting cars of coal and transporting men.

"INTRODUCTION The surface areas of the finest fractions of a pulverized material are disproportionately larger than their weights. For instance, Pesrott and Kinney 3/ showed that, in a sample of minus 200-mesh coal, particles that are about 2 microns in diameter represent 15 percent of the entire surface area but only 1.5 percent of the total weight. Because the sur- face area is the dominating factor in the behavior of finely divided materials in many practical processes, the role of the finest particles is of great importance. The oxidation and combustion of pulverized coal, both in the dry form and in suspension in oils, and the hydrogenation to fluid hydrocarbons of mixtures of pulverized coal and heavy oil are reactions in which the surface area of the coal particles has considerable influence. This investigation of the size distribution of fine coal particles was conducted with the hope that such processes would thereby be better understood. The results should also be of value in the study of the crushing and fracture of coal."

This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to obtain an experimental solution of stress changes in the vicinity of a circular opening in an infinite plate. Plates were stressed biaxially in compression and subjected, by four different-length shoes, to a uniform pressure at opposing points on the opening periphery. The principal stresses along the vertical and horizontal axes, which result from peripheral pressure, were obtained from the photoelastic analysis of four frozen-stress epoxy models. These principal stresses were then super-imposed on the mathematically determined principal stresses (along the same axes) obtained from a theoretical biaxial stress field in which the magnitude of the lateral pressure was one-third that of the vertical pressure. The results indicate that an increase in shoe length increases the radial compressive stress and the tangential tensile stress (except tangential compression at r/a = 1, which exists for all shoe lengths). Also, a partial control of the stresses within one-half radius of the opening surface is accomplished by a change in the magnitude and placement of peripheral pressure.

This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

This report investigates the effects of adding a layer of extra padding to the palm area of leather gloves typically worn by low seam coal miners. The first study showed that added glove padding provides more potential protection but does not affect manual dexterity. The second study, in a simulated low seam coal mine, showed no significant differences using padded and non-padded gloves in crawling, shoveling, timbering, and cart pushing task completion times. In general, subjects preferred the padded gloves although they expressed some complaints about awkardness and loss of sensitivity. Recommendations are given for the design of padded gloves that will provide comfort, protection, and maximum hand sensitivity for miners.

A study of certain gas making and fuel problems peculiar to the gas industry of California has been made by the Bureau of Mines. The work was done at the request of, and in cooperation with The California Gas Research Council 2, for the purpose of obtaining basic information on the gas-making fuels available to California, and their applicability to the present and future needs of the gas industry in that State. The data obtained have been applied in outlining a construction program, and indicate the possibilities in efficiently utilizing fuels in making gas by other than the oil-gas process. This paper presents an outline of the study and a summary of the principal results obtained, with some of the more important conclusions and recommendations based on this data. Gas is produced in California by processes which are both unique and different from those common to other parts of the United States. The bulk of the manufactured gas is made in and distributed from two main districts which are centers of population - namely, the Los Angeles district and the San Francisco Bay district. The gas manufactured in the Bay district is, almost exclusively oil-gas, whereas that produced in the southern part of the State, where natural gas is available, is mostly mixed natural gas and reformed-gas, but oil-gas is the chief product when the supply of natural gas is inadequate. Practically all of the gas companies are equipped with oil-gas generating apparatus, and anticipate using it in the future. As the continued use of the oil-gas process to the exclusion of all other processes, depends upon a continued supply of oil at a low cost, and the prospect of obtaining such low-priced oil in the future is somewhat uncertain, the questions have arisen: What will the future gas-making process or processes be? When will it be necessary to make plans for the installation of different gas generating equipment, and what will that equipment comprise?

The most important single operation in mining is the ventilation of underground areas in a manner conducive to the health and safety of employees. Adequate volumes of pure air must be supplied at the working faces, along the haulageways, and wherever men work, so as to dilute and carry away the methane liberated from the coal and adjoining strata, noxious gases evolved by the use of explosives, and the carbon dioxide exhaled by men and formed by oxidation of carbonaceous material, as well as any other gases, and also dusts which may be found in mine workings. A sufficient quantity of air must also sweep abandoned or worked-out areas of the mine to prevent the accumulation of gases, where sealing methods are not utilized to isolate old workings. Air, in a quantity adequate to meet the needs of the particular mine to which it is applied, is necessary, and supplying it can be made very expensive through failure to observe good practices in its direction and apportionment." This is one of a. series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing raining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in man; instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that the scope of the cost tabulations shall not be misunderstood. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Avon Mountain trap-rock quarry of the Atlas Sand, Gravel & Stone Co., in West Hartford, Conn.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated two real-time light-scattering dust monitors by measuring their response to Pittsburgh Seam coal dust and Arizona road dust (ARD). Both monitors, the model PDS-l, a personal dust sensor, and the model PCD-l, a digital dust indicator, are made in Japan by Sibata Scientific Ltd. Tests were conducted inside a laboratory aerosol chamber designed to maintain a uniform spatial distribution of the test dust. PDS-l and PCD-l measurements of concentrations for each test dust were averaged over 4-h test periods and compared with simultaneous gravimetric measurements. Both dust monitors responded linearly with mass concentration with both coal dust and ARD. However, the linear response of the PDS-l differed from that of the PCD-l for both dusts.

"Nearly every piece of electrical equipment used in mines ""breathes."" In other words, motors, controllers, rheostats, switches, and other similar equipment, even though encased in seemingly tight compartments, breathe in the atmosphere that surrounds them.As the apparatus is used, the temperature of metallic parts is changed generally in positive direction through the heat by friction and the heat due to the electric current. When the apparatus is idle it gradually cools down to the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.This increase of temperature during operation and return to normal temperature when operation stops alternately raises and lowers the temperature of the atmosphere within the compartments which, in strict accordance with Charles' law -will expand or contract in proportion to any given temperature change.As compartments are not gas-tight, such expansion and contraction will force the atmosphere out of the compartment =on expansion and suck the surround¬ing atmosphere into the compartment during contraction, hence the term ""breathing.""Investigators2 of explosion-proof equipment have recognized that such an interchange would take place and have designed their equipment to safeguard possible explosions within the compartments."
