A series of alloys was laboratory prepared by adding up to 4 weight-percent cobalt to the basic composition of type AM 350 (AISI 633) stainless steel. Aging curves were established for each alloy at 750° F, 850° F, and 950° F for lengths of time up to 100 hours. A series of annealed steels containing as much as 1 weight-percent cobalt was cold-rolled 50 percent and aged for 3 hours at 850° F. No improvement in hardness due to cobalt was observed in the steels transformed by heat treatment. Slight improvements in hardness were observed in the steels transformed by cold working.

Heats of solution of calcium carbon-ate (calcite) and calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined by solution calorimetry. Combination of these two heats yields a value of 42.643±0.024 kcal/mole for the enthalpy of calcination of calcite at 298.15 K. Literature data on ?H°298.15 of calcination of calcite were reviewed and compared. Thermodynamic properties for the calcination process were calculated from 298.15 to 1,500 K using Gibbs energy functions. This research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as an effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of minerals technology, energy conservation, and environmental preservation.

"In the January 3 issue of Iron Trade Review, Sweetser2, in referring to the problem of coke combustibility, points out that, ""Someone should formulate a rule for the rate of flow of coke through the zone of coke combustion that now appears to be confined to a comparatively restricted volume in front of the tuyeres,"" In formulating such a rule it is necessary to distinguish clearly between combustibility, a property of the fuel, and rate of combustion, which is determined by the rate at which air is supplied to the fuel bed. The rate of carbon gasified at the tuyeres of a blast furnace is independent of coke combusti-bility. A fast-burning coke will burn in a more restricted volume than a slow-burning coke, but both types of fuel will be consumed at rates determined by the supply of oxygen,A number of the definitions of combustibility that have appeared in technical literature relate more closely to rate of combustion than to combustibility. Perrott and Kinney) have correctly defined it as follows: ""Combustibility of coke from the standpoint of its use in, the blast furnace is inversely proportional to the mean rate of gasification per unit volume of the combustion zone, assuming other factors remain constant,"" Combustibility of coke refers therefore to those properties that determine the size or extent of the combustion zone. Relative differences in these properties can be measured by the depth of the fuel bed required to convert oxygen from the air into carbon monoxide."

One of the largest items in the expense of operating a refinery is the cost of the fuel used in distillation and for miscellaneous purposes such as in the heating of buildings and in the generation of electricity. On a B. t. u. basis, the average refinery consumes approximately one-tenth as much fuel as it produces. Theoretically, the fuel consumption at refineries should be much smaller than this, but furnaces can not be designed to be 100 per cent efficient and, in addition, a large part of the waste heat is low-temperature heat which would not pay for the expense of recovering it. Annual surveys of fuel consumption at refineries have been made by the United States Bureau of Mines, beginning with 1925. During the 5-year period, 1925-1929, the refineries made steady progress in fuel economy. This is evidenced by the computed figures of heat requirement per carrel of crude oil refined, which show a decline from 829,000 B. t. u. in 1925 to 639,000 B. t. u. in 1929 (see fig. 1). In 1930, however, 'the trend in fuel economy was reversed and the quantity of heat utilized in refining the average barrel of crude oil rose to 672,000 B. t. u. There were undoubtedly a number of reasons for the apparent decrease in fuel economy at refineries in 1930, chief of which were the tendency to carry the distillation farther instead of merely topping the crude and a gain in the consumption of waste oils, such as acid sludge, which in actual practice yield less heat per unit consumed than has been theoretically assigned to oil.

Laboratory batch and semicontinuous studies showed the feasibility of using methylene bromide and trichloroethylene in heavy liquid cyclone concentration of a Nevada brucite ore. Cyclone tests of minus 20- plus 200-mesh material at specific gravities of 2.42 and 2.44 recovered 71.6 to 74.9 percent of the MgO at grades of 95.5 and 95.4, respectively. Neither increasing the feed pulp density from 5 to 25 percent solids, nor varying feed pressures from 25 to 60 psig had any apparent effect on the heavy liquid separation.

Since the introduction of electricity into the mines of the United States , the hazards incident to the industry have increased materially in both coal and metal mines . For economic reasons the tendency at present , particularly in coal mining , is decidedly toward the adoption of electrical mine machinery , including alternating current machinery , on a more extensive scale than ever before . Obviously, the growing use of such equipment will result in an ever -increasing number of underground transformer stations . The principal electrical hazards in mines are threefold ; fire , explosion, and contact . Of these , fire is the greatest hazard involved in the use of electricity underground , and several fires have originated in underground transformer and motor generator set stations . The fire hazard due to improperly installed and poorly maintained underground transformer stations is an ever-present one , and failure to take the necessariman remedial action is likely to result , sooner or later, in the destruction of life and property . Upon suggesting the necessary corrective measures with respect to such installations , one is often confronted with the statement to the effect that even though this particular hazard has existed over a period of years , there have been no unfavorable results therefrom thus far . Frequently , the desirability for action is not apparent to the mine management until it is too late . Because a mine has a record free from fires , explosions , etc. , over a number of years of operation during which these hazards existed , such good fortune should not be taken as a guarantee that this or any other mine is immune from these common dangers . When the elements of an existing hazard are properly balanced or in the right proportion, the unfortunate combination must of necessity culminate in misfortune of one kind or another. The fire hazard due to underground transformer installations can be very definitely minimized by proper installation and maintenance . In coal mines the transformer banks , connected to 2,300 and occasionally to 4,400 volt circuits , are often found located in open- ended crosscuts , mounted on concrete or timber foundations , and in nonfireproof surroundings .

INTRODUCTION Present-day Mexican mining legislation involves, not only the latest minim enactment (August 1, 1026), but many other enactments and regulations, principal among which are the Constitution, the Civil Code, the Code of Commerce, the Foreign Law, the Mining Tax Law, and. the Civil Jurisprudence of Mexico--the last-mentioned being based in Dart on Supreme Court decisions. Ere Mexican Federal Government is supreme in mining legislation because, among other reasons, a large part of the revenue of the Government must come from the fiscal control of the mines. All circulars, decrees, and rulings that affect the mines not only have their origin in the Central Government but are administered thereby. The Department of Industry, Commerce, and Labor is in control of all mines. Attention may here be called, however,

"INTRODUCTION Explosives have been used in ever—increasing amounts since gunpowder was invented. For hundreds of years only low explosives of the deflagrating type were used, and they were fired by means of a flame or hot object. Ben¬jamin Franklin first ignited gunpowder from a distance in 1751 by means of an electrostatic spark. Further efforts to develop a satisfactory electrical method to ignite explosives from greater distances were overshadowed by the invention of safety fuse in 1831, as this offered a relatively simple and inexpensive means of firing explosives.The discovery and introduction of high explosives of the detonating type and the invention of the fulmitate of mercury blasting cap about the middle of the nineteenth century provided the needed impetus for inventors to develop means of firing the cap by electricity. The original high-tension igniter, following Benjamin Franklin's experiment in which the detonating compound was ignited by a spark, was discarded in favor of a low-tension igniter, in which the detonating compound was ignited by a heated wire. The past 2 decades have seen considerable improvement in the design and construction of electric detonators to make them safer and more efficient, yet in spite of the improvement it is estimated that less than 50 percent of the explosives used in industry today are ignited or detonated electrically. The trend, however, is toward the use of electric methods. In recent years numerous-mining companies have introduced electric blasting exclusively at their mines as a means of improving safety and efficiency."

The term "titaniferous magnetite" is used to designate those mag- netic ores of iron that carry more than 2 or 3 per cent of titanium. Large and easily workable deposits of these ores occur in different parts of the world, and have attracted attention for many years. Under present furnace practice, however, the smelting of these ores is both difficult and expensive, and for that reason they are not accepted by furnaces, so that the deposits are practically worthless. The problem of finding a feasible method of utilizing these ores has naturally been attractive, and numerous attempts have been made to solve it. Experiments to that end embrace two lines of investigation. The one that has been the more frequently tried is the elimination of the titanium from the ores, so as to make possible their smelting in the usual way. The other is the devising of a method of smelting by which titaniferous ores may be reduced as economically as are non- titaniferous ores. The former method involves a physical process, the latter a chemical process. The measure of success attainable by the first method depends entirely on the relations between the iron and the titanium in the ore. Views in regard to these relations have been divergent. Some investi- gators have believed the titanium to occur as a part of the magnetite molecule, in which case, of course, any process of mechanical separa- tion would be impossible. Others have believed that the titanium occurs as the mineral ilmenite, and that the ores are aggregates of magnetite and ilmenite. In this case a separation of the two minerals is theoretically possible. Magnetite is highly magnetic; ilmenite is nonmagnetic or only feebly magnetic. Crushing and magnetic con- centration should separate them. Numerous experiments in mag- netic separation have been made with various degrees of success, but rarely has more than a very imperfect separation been obtainable. This report describes a study designed to evaluate a proposed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation as performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a "pull test" equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

Measure tattling in cemented backfill when installation of bore-hole extensometers is not feasible. Problem To evaluate the amount of load that backfill carries during pillar recovery, information about how much the backfill settles after placement is often required. However, the composition of some backfills makes them difficult to drill and the installation of borehole extensometers almost impossible. Approach Bureau researchers have developed a vertical fill extensometer that can be cast in place as a stope is being filled. It consists of a baseplate, sections of steel pipe enclosed in loosely coupled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, and a top anchor assembly that contains a displacement transducer (fig. 1).

The Bureau of Mines for a number of years has been carrying on an investigation of properties of crude petroleum from producing, fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere, and has published a series of reports on these fields, including oil fields of Oklahoma2. Acknowledgements Thanks are due to R. R. Brandenthaler and Peter Grandone, of the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, at Bartlesville, Oklahoma, who reviewed the manuscript and contributed valuable suggestions. Native asphalt was produced in 1977 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output declined 39% to 1,237,000 tons valued at $18,874,000. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsanite Co. in Uinta County. Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County. Utah. The asphalt was used for streets and roads, and for other purposes.

The mineral industry in Burundi was a minor contributor to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at just $1 billion for 19812. Coffee and tea continued as the Nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports consisted of small tonnages of wolframite, cassiterite, and baetnasite. Burundi's trade balance of payments situation worsened in 1981, with import payments more than double export revenues. Petroleum imports alone equaled 46% of the export revenue total. By year-end, the only indigenous fossil fuel source to have been found in Burundi was peat, which the Government had been attempting to develop to alleviate some of the petroleum import requirements. In June 1981 the Irish Peat Development Authority, Bord na Mona, signed a 4-year contract with the Burundian Government to supply technical staff for the ongoing peat project work there. Funding for the project was provided by the VS. Agency for International Development and the Government of Ireland. The new contract, which was an extension of ongoing peat research there, represented Burundi's increased awareness of the value of its large peat reserves for both energy and agricultural uses. At yearend, Burundi's Ministry of Public Works and Mines was does to selecting a contractor to study the feasibility of developing Burundi's phosphate deposits. The study would determine the potential for establishing fertilizer production facilities based on the country's phosphate reserves at Matongo-Bandaga, The study's specific objectives are to prove mineral reserve tonnage and grade, draw up mining and processing facility designs, estimate capital and production costs, and conduct a regional market and distribution survey. The cost of the study was estimated at slightly over $1 million, and it should take approximately 16 months to complete. The proposed project will mark the Burundian Government's first step in its plan to exploit on a large scale its natural mineral resources for advancing its agriculture-based economy. Burundi was dependent on imports, which are expensive to transport inland from coastal ports, to supply its domestic requirements for fertilizer. The Bureau of Mines has undertaken beneficiation investigations on samples representing large tonnages of oxidized taconites in order to develop and evaluate applicable technologies for producing iron oxide concentrates from these materials. Information derived from the investigations can be used to expand the domestic iron raw-materials base and to establish the impact these taconite deposits may have on future national iron ore requirements. This report describes a process that includes reduction roasting, magnetic separation, and flotation, applied to a western Mesabi Range sample taken near Coleraine, Minn. The sample contained 36.8 pct iron and 46.0 pct silica, and represented 0.5 to 1 billion tons of crude material. An average of 962 lb/hr of oxidized taconite was roasted with 33 lb/hr of lignite in a 35-foot-long rotary kiln. Pulverized lignite and natural gas maintained the kiln operating temperature at 850° C. The roasted taconite was beneficiated by magnetic separation and cationic flotation in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant and yielded a product analyzing 68.1 pct iron and 4.6 pct silica, and containing 82.4 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating the causes and mechanisms of roof failure in underground mines. It is expected that a better understanding of these causes and mechanisms will lead to better layout and support designs that will help prevent accidents and fatalities associated with fall of ground. Two numerical experiments were conducted by NIOSH researchers using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) computer modeling program with a strain-softening continuum to simulate fracture zones. Two models, one of a round hole in a plate and one of a rectangular opening, were constructed and boundary conditions were applied to simulate far-field shear. The Particle Flow Code in Two Dimensions (PFC2D) computer program was used to look at the effects of far-field shear in generating fractures around an underground opening, but these models are preliminary until boundary conditions, strengths, and stiffnesses are matched to the FLAC models. Results showed that shear zones propagated from the opposite corners of openings in directions that appeared to be determined by opening shape and far-field stress. Tensile failures also formed and extended away from these shear zones. The consistent direction of shear deformation with respect to far-field shear provides a plausible explanation for preferred directions of shear as seen in geologic environments.

Synthetic dawsonite [NaAl(OH)2C03] has been prepared with crystallinity similar to that of dawsonite found in oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek area of Colorado. Optimum experimental conditions were as follows: Na/Al atomic ratio, 43; temperature, 175° to 200° C; pCO2, 15 psig; and reaction time 5 hr. Chemical and spectrographic analysis revealed that the synthetic dawsonite was of high purity and Has essentially stoichwmetric. Similarity of the synthetic to natural dawsonite, demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrophotometry, and electron microscopy, suggests its suitability as a standard.

Helium shipments for 1965 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 16th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 698.6 million cubic feet, 2 about 4.7 percent more than in 1964. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 757.4 million cubic feet, and an additional 3,549.6 million cubic feet was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program and purchased by the Bureau of Mines and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 per thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Production and sales of helium increased from the one private plant operating entirely outside the Government's helium program. A second private plant was virtually complete at yearend, although actual production had not commenced.

This paper is one of a series on milling methods being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. Atlanta is in Elmore County, Idaho, about 80 miles from the railroad at Mountain Home, Idaho. The concentrator is at an elevation of, 6,000 feet and located in a timbered, well-watered region of relatively heavy snowfall. The snow, however, does not seriously affect local operations. The track road to Mountain Home, which passes over a mountain range, is closed each winter from about November 1 to June 15. During this period concentrates are stored and bullion is shipped by airplane. Power is generated by a Diesel engine and by an auxiliary hydroelectric plant. Gold is the principal metal produced; the or also contains an able quantity of silver.
