To concentrate coarse mica particles using a dry beneficiation technique. Approach Concentrate coarse, II berated mica particles using a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and a two-stage zigzag air classifier. How It Works Because mica has a flat plate-like crystalline structure, mica particles are significantly lighter than blocky gangue particles of the same size fraction. Thus an air classification technique can separate the flat, light mica particles from the heavier gangue particles. The ore, which Is first run through a standard jaw crusher, a roll crusher, and a hammer mill to liberate the mica, enters the rougher Zig-zag section through a rotating air lock. See photograph and diagram of a 2-stage air classifier. Airflow through the classifier can be varied according to the size of the particles being separated. The gangue material falls through the airstream of the rougher zigzag section and is discarded as tailings. The mica flakes are carried by the air-stream to the cyclone shown on the right side of the diagram, where they are collected. This rougher mica concentrate is fed to the cleaner zigzag section through another rotating air lock. The mica particles are again carried by the airstream but they are now collected In the cyclone on the left side. The cleaner concentrate leaves the left-side cyclone through a third rotating air lock and is rescreened to remove under-size material missed by the first screening. The final product of this pneumatic process is generally a high-grade mica concentrate. A generalized flow diagram for the pneumatic concentration method Is shown In the second diagram.

This paper describes technology and training that has been identified for underground emergency responders. Historically, underground mine rescue teams have only received training in the course of actual emergencies, or in simulated mine environments, usually on the surface, with placards to identify objects and hazards. Also, while U.S. Federal Regulations require all underground miners to walk escapeways and conduct fie drills every 90 days in a smoke-free environment, this does not fully prepare them for the conditions that will be encountered in real escape situations. Therefore, it is extremely important that miners are provided with adequate technology and that training simulations are conducted in a realistic manner. A series of mine rescue training and mine emergency response development (MERD) exercises, and in-mine smoke training was developed, conducted, and evaluated by state and company teams, and by National Institute For Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) personnel. The training exercises were held at NIOSH's Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL) and operating mines during the past several years. This training resulted in improved technology and training for mine rescue teams, fire brigades, first responders, and miners in general. For example, existing technologies were identified to help responders during exploration and recovery operations. These included various chemical light shapes, strobe lights, light vests, and laser pointers to identify team members. Most of these devices may be used to mark underground areas and certain mine materials. Strobe lights were used for mapping out escapeways and lasers were used to negotiate travel through smoke. Thermal imaging systems allow rescue personnel to see in darkness and through dense smoke, and allows the user to easily locate missing or trapped personnel and heated areas. A hands-free communication system showed potential for enhanced communications between team members, the fresh air base, and command center. A new team lighted-lifeline allows for flexibility in movements of team members during routine tasks and allows them to easily find their fixed position on the lifeline. Of all the technology evaluated by underground personnel, laser lights and lifelines were most beneficial in leading personnel to safety and out of the mine in smoke-filled passageways. A positive-pressure inflatable escape device (IED)/airlock, was used to isolate the "hazardous" environment from fresh air and allow rescue team members to traverse through. An inflatable feed- tube partition that can rapidly block large openings such as underground passageways or tunnels and simultaneously provide a feed-tube for high-expansion foam generators was also deployed during the simulations. These technological advancements have improved the state of readiness for rescue personnel and have increased the chances of survival for all personnel escaping from underground emergencies.

Crude shale oil produced by gas combustion retorting of Green River oil shale was hydrocracked over a cobalt molybdate catalyst at operating pressures of 500, 1,000, 1,500, and 3,000 psig, an operating temperature of 8900 F, and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0. Hydrogen feed rate was maintained at 6,000 scf/bbl. The volume-percent yields of total liquid product were directly proportional to the operating pressure. Weight-percent conversion and volume-percent yields of gasoline were directly proportional to the log of the operating pressure. Catalyst deposit percentages were inversely proportional to the log of the operating pressure. Nitrogen and sulfur removal rates as well as saturation of the liquid products increased as the operating pressure was increased.

General Six open-pit metal mines, five copper and one molybdenum, were visited during the course of the research. Four were investigated twice, in summer and in winter, in order to determine the effects of seasonal variations In temperature and moisture upon the measured parameters, Permission to enter the fifth mine was received too late to make an examination during the summer months. The sixth mine was visited to confirm the results obtained from the other five and specifically, to observe how the project recommendations (as will be presented in this chapter) would apply to open-pit metal mines in general. Information gathered during the ten plant visits is sufficient to form an adequate data base for the report. A complete presentation of all field trip data is given in Appendix 1. Further, a detailed description of the electrical distribution and grounding practices at each mine is also contained there. Typical System. At a typical mine as shown schematically in Figure 62, one or more substations with resistance-grounded secondaries are employed to transform the incoming utility-voltage to the lower potential used by the mining machines, generally three-phase 4160 V. At this level, pit distribution is carried on overhead lines, supported by wooden poles, to supply switchhouses located in benches near the particular piece of equipment. "A million tons of coal mined in the Pennsylvania anthracite region without a fatality is a feat of which to be proud and one that deserves the commendation of the entire mining industry. The average production per fatality in this region for 1933 was 206,823 tons, an exceptional record showing the results of an intensive drive made by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and the anthracite operators and-workers to curtail the high accident rates heretofore prevailing in the region.This paper gives information about a mine with a record five times better than the average which should prove to the industry that mine accidents can be reduced through the proper safety organization and effort. The Pine Hill Coal Co., managed by Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., and located at Minersville, Schuylkill County, Pa., has made such a record at its Oak all colliery by studying its accident experience, realizing the facts, and pursuing a definite safety policy with a view to bettering its accident occurrence.As a direct result of its safety policy this colliery has produced 1,044,000 tons of anthracite without a fatality; within 3 years it has reduced its total accidents from 645 to 105 per year, its compensable accidents from 204 to 45 per year, and its lost-time accidents from 335- to 67 per year. In addition, it has set up a smoothly functioning safety organization that will go fax in aiding in the continuance of this great work of mining anthracite at a lower .cost in human suffering.This circular describes the accident-prevention methods perfected and the results obtained by this colliery in the belief that similar methods will produce essentially similar results at any other colliery where they may be adopted.The writer acknowledges his indebtedness to the officials of the company who furnished him with the details of the safety organization and the data from which this report was prepared. He especially desires to thank Messrs. Stockett, general manager, Wells, general superintendent, Morgan, safety engineer, and Kistler,- statistical department, for their hind assistance.The mine is opened by shafts, slopes, and drifts, a characteristic of minas in the Southern anthracite field. Thirteen different beds of coal are being mined. The thickness of the beds ranges from 3.5 to 16 feet and the pitch from 0 to 900. The roof and floor exhibit the entire range of conditions found in anthracite mines. Table 1 describes the coal seams being worked."

Material properties affecting slope stability were measured in a large 50-year-old, partially consolidated rockdump located in an active open-pit mine. Field tests included single-ring infiltration and density. In addition, a nuclear depth-moisture gauge was used to measure water content in six stainless-steel-cased drill holes on the crest and an upper bench of the rock dump. Precipitation, evaporation, wind speed and direction, and temperature data were collected at a weather station installed on the dump’s crest. Laboratory tests included particle-size distribution, specific gravity, Atterberg limits, and water content. By measuring material properties of a rock dump presumed to be stable, the safety of miners working on or at the toe of old rock dumps constructed of similar material and located in a similar climate can be assessed.

Results of a study are presented of the effect of low radial reinforcement pressure on the postfailure characteristics of two types of granite, a sandstone, and marble. The low radial reinforcement pressure is applied to the rock surface by a gooch rubber sleeve. The gooch rubber sleeve provides a radial pressure of less than 1 psi pressure to the rock surface. This method of support gives an average strength increase of approximately 8 percent to the fractured rock sample.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for removing excess iron from representative samples of bauxite ore from the Quapaw deposit of American Cyanamid Co., Saline County, Ark., in order to produce a beneficiated ore suitable for use in the alum industry, At the request of the sponsoring company, the samples were reduction-roasted at 800° C. and then magnetically separated. Although some rejection of iron was effected under these conditions, the general results were not satisfactory, A much more successful procedure, from the standpoints of both rejection of iron and recovery of alumina, consisted of a short (l5-minute), low-temperature (400° C.) oxidizing roast, followed by a 2-minute interval in a hydrogen atmosphere, then cooling to room temperature, and, finally, high-intensity magnetic separation to remove the iron.

In the preparation of beryllium-copper alloys by fused-salt electrolysis, beryllium was electrowon from beryllium oxide dissolved in fluoride electrolytes and deposited on copper cathodes. At 880° to 1,030° C, deposition was on solid cathodes. Beryllium deposited on the copper, forming a liquid alloy that dripped from the cathode. Dripping alloys containing 3 to 4 weight-percent beryllium were produced with as high as 90 percent cathode current efficiency, by electrolysis at 910°.C. To prepare alloys of higher beryllium content, attempts were made at depositing beryllium on liquid copper cathodes. These efforts were generally unsuccessful, although alloys containing as much as 12 percent beryllium were prepared by this method. At temperatures of 1,100° to 1,300° C, requisite to maintaining beryllium-copper compositions as liquids, the beryllium reacted with cell structures.

A portable, multichannel battery-operated mine-permissible measurement system was developed to measure the rms magnetic-field noise spectrum in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 375 kHz. During each measurement, the entire spectrum is measured simultaneously through the use of time-domain recordings which are later analyzed by Fast Fourier Transform processing. Dynamic ranges of 60 dB in a 125 Hz bandwidth are obtained for spectra covering the range from 100 Hz to 100 kHz. The method also allows a three-dimensional display of the way spectrum occupancy changes with time. Calibration and correction procedures allow absolute field strength measurement with an uncertainty of not more than 3 dB. We feel that further analysis of the system errors will allow this uncertainty to be reduced to less than 1 dB. Ambient magnetic field noise spectra covering frequencies from 100 Hz to 100 kHz are given for several underground coal mine locations. Examples are also given of magnetic field noise on the surface above the mine, noise in the mine face area, noise radiated by specific equipment, the voltage spectrum found on a 600 V dc trolley wire, and noise picked up simultaneously on loops and on roof support bolts.

Natural gas was Bangladesh's only significant exploited mineral. A few other minerals or mineral-based commodities were produced for local consumption. The most valuable were nitrogen fertilizer, salt, cement, and clay for brick.2 The most important mineral industry development of 1987 was the start of modest production of crude oil, the first discovered and produced in the country. PRODUCTION AND TIADE Production of natural gas from the nation's huge reserves continued to increase but was limited by the lack of residential and industrial demand. Gas reserves of 7 trillion to 16 trillion cubic feet were sufficient for far more production than the country could efficiently utilize for many years. The country's consumption-to-reserves ratio was one of the lowest of the developing nations. Mineral exports have been insignificant, comprising a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogenous fertilizer exports could become important when planned new capacity comes on-stream. Mineral imports were dominated by crude petroleum.

Surface area measurements were conducted on cadmium sulfide powders following thermal treatments at temperatures up to 500° C and treatment times up to 1 week. Thermal treatments at temperatures up to 300° C produced no significant changes in the surface area of the powders even after 1 week of exposure. At 500° C some decomposition of the cadmium sulfide occurred.

As part of its program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals, the Bureau of Mines conducted characterization and beneficiation studies on a St. Johns County, Fla., phosphate ore that was mined by borehole mining. Results revealed that the ore from this test mine was mostly sand-size carbonate-fluorapatite and quartz and contained 24.6 percent P205. Concentration by various flotation techniques produced phosphate concentrates that ranged, in percent, from 30.0 to 31.4 P205, 0.73 to 0.80 MgO, and 2.8 to 7.2 acid insoluble. Recovery of the phosphate from the ore ranged from 89.4 to 96.3 percent.

Exports of agricultural products, mostly coffee, continued to account for more than 90% of Burundi's foreign exchange revenue. The country's ban on commercial mining was lifted in 1987. Mining of peat for fuel, limestone for agriculture, and clay for insecticides continued as in previous years. At yearend, Burundi's external debt stood at almost $700 million.2 Amoco Burundi, a subsidiary of the Amoco Petroleum Co., drilled two exploration wells in northern Lake Tanganyika in 1987. No oil was found, but preliminary findings were encouraging enough that further seismic surveys and offshore and onshore drilling exploration were planned in 1988. Any oil or gas finds would have substantial impact on the Burundian economy because a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports. The Zaire Government agreed in June to let Amoco Burundi explore Zaire's side of Tanganyika using the same equipment and personnel being used in Burundi.

Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that a total of 44,015 employees worked in underground mining locations in 2003, corresponding to 44,778 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers. • Ninety percent of underground employees (n = 39,735) were mine operator employees. • Contractors comprised 10% of all underground mining employees (n = 4,280) and comprised only 5.8% of all underground FTEs. • The majority of underground employees worked for coal operators (73.0%; n = 32,130).

Introduction A wealth of information exists which deals with electrical grounding, both from a general viewpoint and from a specifically mine-oriented approach. Many parameters must be investigated in order to thoroughly cover all of the variables which govern the performance of electrical grounding systems. The emphasis of this work on open-pit practices re- presents a new development in the field of grounding research, and an exhaustive review of the relevant historical documentation is especially desirable. Grounding System Purposes What purposes are served by a grounding system? The answer is four-fold and may be summarized as follows. First, it must limit potential gradients between conducting materials in a given area (56). When a phase conductor comes into contact with a machine frame, current flows through the equipment, which tends to become elevated above ground by an amount equal to the voltage on the conductor. If a man were to touch the machine while he was simultaneously connected to ground in some manner, his body would also tend to become elevated in potential, possibly to a lethal extent. Thus, the grounding system should provide a low- resistance path for the fault current to return to the source. The maxi- mum potential to which a man could be exposed when touching a machine frame is equal to the voltage drop along the ground conductors inside the power cable, as shown in Figure 1 (54). "In-mine airborne particulate samples have been successfully collected and the relative amounts of diesel and coal determined using the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method. This method allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the airborne respirable dust concentration in us underground coal mines. Samples were taken near the feeder-breaker, on haulage vehicles, and in the returns. Sampling methodologies were developed for coal-only and diesel-only particulate reference samples with sufficient filter loading for the LRQA method. A statistical analysis of reproducibility has been carried out. Samples have been collected simultaneously at two locations using the LRQA and the size-selective sampling methods. Good agreement between the two methods has been found.INTRODUCTIONThe goal of this research has been to develop the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method to measure the composition of respirable particulate, i.e. the fractions of coal and of diesel particulate, in the mine ambient air. In earlier Bureau of Mines sponsored research, we successfully demonstrated that the LRQA method could be used to measure the fraction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in coal/diesel particulate mixtures which were prepared in the laboratory.(I) 'The immediate objective was to test and refine this LRQA method on samples collected in a diesel underground coal mine.Specific objectives required to meet this goal include:I) Develop in-mine sample collection methods which will insure sufficient particulate loading on filters for LRQA. ,2) Develop methodology for in-mine collection of reference samples (""coal-only"" and ""diesel-only"" filters) which arc required for quantitative LRQA. 3) Analyze precision and accuracy of the LRQA method. 4) Compare composition measurements with another analytical method, i.e. the University of Minnesota/Bureau of Mines size selective sampling Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) method.An advantage of the LRQA method is that it allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the respirable dust concentration in US underground coal mines. No new sampling instruments and techniques are required. Transfer of sample from collection substrate to analysis substrate is not necessary. Furthermore, other analyses can be made on the same sample since the technique is nondestructive."

To obtain beryllium metal of higher purity , flakes produced from electrorefining scrap metal were used as cell feed for a second cycle of electrore fining at 500 ° C in an electrolyte composed of 51.7 mole - percent LiCl , 36.9 molepercent KC1 , and 11.4 mole - percent BeC¹ · Metallic impurities in the flakes totaled more than 108 ppm , the metallic impurities in the metal obtained from the two - cycle electrorefining were , with the exception of 35 ppm of calcium , below the spectrographic determination limits .

New mineral activity focused on increased petroleum exploration activities, while the established construction-oriented minerals sector operated without substantial change from previous years. After showing a 1 % real growth in the $154 million II gross domestic product (GDP) for 1983, preliminary estimates for 1984 indicated that the same growth pattern prevailed. The negative trade balance at midyear had worsened over the negative balance for the same period in 1983. An upward trend in import costs partly reflected the impact of Mexican inflation, which made that country's goods more ex-pensive and led to increased imports from North America and Europe. On the other hand, by midyear, the reexport trade with Mexico indicated an upward climb from the 1988 low of $12.7 million.

THE MILDEST recession of the postwar period ended in the first months of 1961, and the economy climbed steadily during the remainder of the year. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Index of Industrial Production climbed from a low point of 102 (1957=100) in February to 115 in December, a rise of 12.5 percent. But economic activity for the year as a whole was only 1.5 percent higher than the 1960 level, as measured by real gross national product (GNP). Although activity increased throughout 1961, much of it was merely regaining ground lost in the decline during the second half of 1960 and the first months of 1961. The FRB index did not re ain the July 1960 high of 110 until June of 1961. Mineral fuels did not fully share in the economic recovery. The (FRB) crude oil and natural gas index rose only 5 percent between February and December. Although the index of monthly coal production increased 11.5 percent during the year, the February level was so low that total production for the year was the lowest since 1954. Total production of energy measured in Btu's was up slightly (1 percent) during the ear. Coal production was down; production of crude oil and natural gas was up. Calculated consumption paralleled production-total up slightly, coal lower, and crude oil and natural gas higher. The most interesting product developments were in coke and residual fuel oil. Sales of coke showed a sharper drop than steel
