The Bureau of Mines investigated the aerodynamic factors that control the functioning of the blowcase devices used in pneumatic processes for dispersing solids. Alumina powder of 8-micron mass-mean diameter was placed in 0.75- inch-diameter by 10-inch-long cylinders} and a blowcase technique was employed. It was determined that dimensions and gas rates for discharging the powder from the cylinder by a stream of gas may be calculated by assuming a fluidization mechanism and extrapolating residues to a desired finite quantity or to zero at the terminal velocity. The state of agglomeration of a powder at discharge may be determined from measurements of the velocity required for zero residue.

Radio propagation measurements were conducted in a coal mine at UHF (200 to 1000 MHz) and VLF (1 to 50 kHz) to characterize the transmission loss of intra-mine paths. The basic experimental parameters included frequency, polarization, path orientation and distance. Further tests evaluated the performance of roof-bolt vs. loop antennas at VLF and parasitic reflectors at UHF. Measurement results are summarized in a series of transmission loss curves. Examples are presented to show the use of these curves in predicting the performance of radio communication systems in mines.

"Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with ~he quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad · (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.INTRODUCTIONLuxbacher and Ramani (1979) have discussed the design process of mine ventilation systems and have provided the interrelationships that exist between ventilation, strata control, drainage and material handling systems and mining methods. They have also outlined the importance of correct analysis of the problem, choice of the right solution method and a rigorous interpretation of the solutions. The expertise required for analysis and interpretation phases was identified as the key element in developing effective and efficient ventilation system designs. Such expertise is embedded in the right choice of questions to be asked of the user as well as in directing the user to a wide array of alternative methods that may satisfy the design requirements. With advances in artificial intelligence applications in recent years, particularly expert systems, the integration of expertise into traditional mine planning and design algorithms has been facilitated. These planning and design aids, employing the integration of numeric and symbolic logic and called coupled systems, are powerful tools for engineers to tap the benefits of experts (Kitzmiller and Kowalik, 1985; Fenves, 1985). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the means of representing knowledge for the design of mine ventilation systems through the use of a coupled system. At the Eighth International Conference of the Directors of Safety in Mines Research, Sartorius and Thouzea5/ presented and discussed data obtained in explosives tests made under varying conditions of humidity. These tests showed that there was less probability of explosives failure when the humidity of the testing gallery atmosphere was high. As it is to be expected that the relative humidity of mine atmospheres where permissible explosives are used will not be identical with that of the test-gallery atmospheres, the influence of atmospheric moisture upon the incendivity of permissible explosives is of the utmost importance if decreasing humidity reduces the relative safety of an explosive. Because of this and because the question has recurred frequently in discussions of gallery testing at Bruceton, Pa., it was decided to investigate the effect of humidity and ambient temperature on the ignition of firedamp by explosives, applying the small-scale gallery methods developed at the Bureau of Mines and used earlier to study the fundamental causes of such ignitions.6 7 8/

This report describes three coal mine ventilation studies by the Bureau of Mines in which sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) was used as a tracer gas. One of these studies was conducted to determine air movement and leakage in a sealed area. Another was run to determine the ventilation efficiency of a bleeder system. Finally, a study was made of air leakage across permanent stoppings of parallel intake airways. These studies proved sulfur hexafluoride to be a useful addition to the equipment commonly used in coal mine ventilation analysis.

Fusion of an 86-percent euxenite concentrate with ammonium sulfate was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Reaction for 4 hours at 400° C results in conversion of both the rare-earth elements and the titanium-columbium components to water-soluble compounds. Similar results are obtained with ammonium bisulfate. Stirring the fusion mass decreases the reaction time substantially. Alternatively, treating the fusion product with a 3-hour, 650° C calcining step renders the non-rare-earth constituents insoluble, thereby allowing selective leaching of a pure rare-earth fraction with an overall yield of 97 percent.

Heat of solution measurements of high-purity neodymium metal and neodymium trichloride (NdCls) in 4.360 molal hydrochloric acid (HCI) were used to determine the standard heat of formation (6EPr) of NdCls? From solution data obtained, the heat of formation of NdCls (c) was computed as -248,970 ±260 cal/mole at 298.150 K.

This handbook is for the engineer or person responsible for the storage and removal of material from bins and silos in the minerals industry. The objective of the handbook is to prevent bin-related accidents by eliminating problems which require workers to enter bins. It provides basic information on handling materials so that knowledgeable decisions can be made on bin design and accessories to minimize flow stoppages. Materials are classified in terms of their flowability, and bin design and accessories suggested for each classification. A method for classifying a material is also given, and the various types of material flow aids reviewed. Safety around bins is the basic theme of the handbook. Federal regulations are reviewed and additional suggestions presented to prevent bin accidents. New equipment for releasing material hang-ups is reviewed.

The explosive oils, nitroglycerin (NG) and ethylene glycol dinitrate (EGDN), were extracted from dynamites by a halocarbon solvent and were then determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Separation was achieved by liquid-liquid chromatography on a column packed with Durapak-Carbowax 400/Corasil II and the eluted NG and EGDN were detected with a double-beam ultraviolet detector.

Manganese oxides occur, with some iron oxides, in small scattered lenses on property controlled by the Columbia Manganese Co. (1943) near Evington, Campbell County, Va. The company mined some manganese ore during 1917 and 1918. A preliminary examination in May 1942 indicated the possibility of finding additional ore. On August 21, 1942, the Bureau of Mines began prospecting to verify the continuity of the ore exposures. Work on this project continued until February 5, 1943. Prospecting and development work included shaft sinking, crosscutting, drifting, trenching, and test-pitting in six separate areas indicating two types of deposits. The most predominant type is a wide brecciated area in which occur lenses or pockets of nodular manganese oxides. The other type is characterized by more of a vein structure, including thin layers of manganese oxides.

Dust concentrations inside and outside enclosed cabs on several types of mining machinery were measured by the Bureau of Mines. Results indicated that properly enclosed cabs can offer significant dust protection for machine operators. Recommendations for improvements in cab technologies were discussed.

This report presents the Phase I progress in the development of a Radar Coal Thickness Sensor (RCTS) being conducted by Boeing Aerospace and Electronics for the Bureau of Mines. A method is developed for measuring both the dielectric constant and depth of the coal shale interface using a modified UHF network analyzer and antennas in proximity to the surface of the coal. Both bistatic and monostatic systems, are compared. The algorithm technique uses synthetic range gating for clutter rejection and full polarimetric scattering matrix techniques to extract the dielectric constant and depth to sub-wavelength accuracies. Tests were run both in the lab and in a coal mine to build an error budget and demonstrate a validation of the model. The development of a prototype radar suitable for coal mine robotics is specified.

"INTRODUCTION The first ten papers of the series on smelting in the lead blast furnace described the operation at the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, Utah, and at the plant of the Bunker Hill Smelting Co., Kellogg, Idaho, which handled a very rich lead concentrate. These previous papers may be considered a picture of the traditional lead smelter treating custom ores and of the smelter that will treat the type of product likely to be made in the future - lead concentrates of an increasingly rich grade.The great plant at Trail is of special interest to those smelting lead products containing much zinc and faced with the necessity of transforming all of their byproducts into commodities which may be sold profitably. The plant is equipped to produce electrolytic zinc, lead, copper, silver, bismuth, and cadmium. Part of the sulphur evolved from treating the ores is converted into sulphuric acid. Complete fertilizers for agricultural purposes are also produced.The smelter of lead ores has long considered that zinc is one of the most difficult ingredients that he has to handle. Even with the gretat improvement in flotation practice today, the residues from electrolytic zinc plants leaching zinc concentrates must still be smelted for their lead content. Of the total gangue material not separated from the lead concentrate sent to the smelter, zinc is still one of the most notable in percentage. The most successful way of coordinating the over-all operations of a concentrator, an electrolytic zinc plant, and a smelter provided with a plant for re-treating the blast-furnace slag for its lead and zinc content must be of interest to many treating complex ores.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe data in this paper were collected in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, and its entire technical staff. The Bureau of Mines annually canvasses the peat producers in the United States and publishes economic data on the industry, based upon reports from producers. This publication lists all producers that reported commercial production to the Bureau for 1959. The companies named herein represent virtually all commercial producers of peat. A few companies, however, may not have been canvassed or failed to respond, as tine survey is voluntary For producers, arid the industry has many small operations that operate intermittently. No consideration was given to the quantities of peat produced and output of the various companies listed ranged from less than 100 tons to more than 50,000 tons, Peat is included in the Bureau's annual surveys of the mineral industries because, technically, peat is a fuel. Although none is used for fuel in the United States, peat is a potential source of energy and one of our large mineral resources. The domestic peat industry produces peat chiefly for use as a soil amendment. The industry has expanded rapidly during the past decade with active operations increasing from 45 in 1947-49 4/ to 105 in 1959. Output during this period has increased 218 percent, rising from 131,782 net tons to 419,460 net tons.

Output of ore and waste from metal and nonmetal mines in the United States continued an upward trend and established a new high. The tonnage of ore handled increased 6 percent over that moved in 1964 and the tonnage of waste rose almost 10 percent. Earth moving by these two activities exceeded 3.2 billion tons, an increase of 7 percent over the 1964 total. Crude material from which metal or nonmetal products were derived continued to be about 75 percent of the total material handled. In 1965, surface mining methods were used to produce about 93 percent of the ore, 99 percent of the waste, and 95 percent of the total material handled. These percentages have remained almost constant since the beginning of this decade.

"INTRODUCTION This report presents statistics of accidents at coke ovens in the United States during the calendar years as 1933, the twenty-first year for which data of this kind are available, 1913 being the first year for which accident reports were collected from the operating companies by the Bureau of Mines. The present report is presented in mimeograph form because insufficient funds are available for printing it. The first report of the Bureau of Mines that contained statistics of accidents for the coke-mining industry in the United States covered the two calendar years, 1913 and 1914. While the figures presented therein related both to beehive and by-product ovens, the original returns from the operating companies were not classified so as to permit the presentation of accident statistics for each class of ovens separately. Beginning with 1915, the accident reports from the operating companies have shown the general type of ovens to which the reports related; therefore, since that year, separate statistics for each of the two classes of ovens have been given in the Bureau's yearly reports of accidents at coke ovens.The coke-making industry in the United States established a safety record in 1933 almost equal in merit to that which it achieved in 1932, when the accident-frequency rate was the lowest and therefore the most favorable that the industry has known. Credit for the achievement is due almost entirely to companies operating byproduct ovens. (See table 8.)"

Proper design characteristics for a seismic system to locate miners during a mine disaster are considered in terms of a total system concept. Field hardware, processing equipment, operating personnel, deployment, training, and supportive R and D are necessary elements of the total system. Each of these elements is discussed and an indication given as to the requirements necessitated by each one. Hardware must be portable, rugged, and fieldworthy. Processing equipment must be simple to operate, expandable for future processing improvements, and ruggedized for field use. A small well-trained team must be available for quick response in times of emergency. Alternative deployment procedures are necessary to allow for a variety of situations including both ground and air delivery. Supportive R and D is used to support training and upgrading of the system.

Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. From time to time the Bureau of Mines has issued publications dealing with the various classes of explosion-proof mining machinery that have been tested and approved as permissible for use in mines having atmospheres that may become inflammable by reason of the inadvertent presence of gas or dust. These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was pub¬lished in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 392, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.
