Solid-liquid flow in different pipe geometries was investigated. This investigation was conducted by measuring delivered solids concentration and head loss. The delivered solids concentration was measured to study the effect of pipe geometry on the minimum carrying velocity above which solids do not lag behind the fluid. Head loss was measured to study the effect of pipe geometry on the friction loss. A mathematical formula was developed for determination of the minimum carrying velocity. Darcy-Weisbach's equation and Durand's equation were used for comparison of head losses of pipe shapes. Of the different pipe shapes studied, each having the same interior cross-sectional area, the rectangular pipe with the wide side oriented as the base yielded the lowest minimum carrying velocity at high solids concentrations. The minimum head loss at low velocity and high solids concentration also was attained with this pipe. Although the circular section is known to be the best for transporting liquid only, the present study suggested that pipe geometry is a factor in lowering the operating velocity and reducing head loss in solid-liquid flow.

Data from 68 entrained-bed carbonization tests were treated statistically by the Bureau of Mines, and several useful relationships were developed among the major variables. Nine coals, ranging in rank from lignite A to high-volatile A bituminous, were carbonized in two entrained-bed carbonization pilot plants. The carbonizing reactors employed were vertically mounted cylinders, internally heated, refractory-lined, and 10 inches ID. The range of carbonization temperatures was from 825° to 1,600° F. Using a regression-analysis computer program, empirical equations were developed by which carbonization temperature, air-to-coal ratio, devolatilization of coal, char yield, and volatile matter content of product char may be predicted.

This report describes sampling and analytical procedures used for measurement of sulfates in diesel tailpipes and in the diluted exhaust within dilution tunnels. A variety of methods exist for sulfate analysis for such systems, including ion exchange. Two chemical methods used by the Bureau of Mines are described in detail. These are based upon spectrophotometric measurement of chloranilic acid using barium chloranilate. The procedures are rapid and relatively inexpensive. In general, ion exchange is preferred by many analysts for sulfate analysis. However, it is more complex and expensive than chloranilic acid procedures, which are adequate for exhaust analysis.

Coal miners, especially roof bolter and continuous miner operators, work in a hazardous underground environment where they are often exposed to poor roof conditions. Nearly 500 rock fall injuries are reported each year, and 99% of them are caused by rocks falling from between the roof bolts. These loose rocks that injure miners are usually just a few inches thick, but on average weigh 280 pounds. NIOSH has found that most rock fall injuries can be prevented by installing roof screen during the bolting cycle. Roof screen is a sheet made of steel wires in a grid pattern. When screen is bolted up against the mine roof, it provides far more coverage than any common surface control used in the mines today. Because more mine roof is covered, there is less chance that a rock will fall and injure a miner. The facts about roof screen are shown in the new NIOSH video entitled “Make It Safer With Roof Screen.” Using extensive underground footage, the 7-minute video shows how well screen keeps loose rock from falling in difficult roof conditions. Techniques for installing screen from both outside-controlled and walk-thru roof bolting machines are shown. The video also provides safe handling tips, best practices, and information about machine technology that can greatly improve material handling. Throughout the video, a coal mine safety manager and a shift foreman talk about the tremendous difference that roof screen has made at their mines. An instructional booklet supplements the video with additional information. It presents compelling data from mines that have practically eliminated rock fall injuries with a roof screening program. Other sections of the booklet discuss in greater detail roof screen installation, tips for manual screen handling, a material handling system for roof screen, and use of the personal bolter screen, which can be easily handled by one person. Screen specification and custom ordering are described, including the sizes of screen, grid sizes, reinforcing (indicator) wires, edge cut options, and screen strength. A list of additional sources of information is also provided. Nearly every mine eventually encounters poor roof. Screen is one of the most powerful control techniques available. This new video will help make mine managers aware of screen, and it can help them in developing a roof screen installation program. It also serves as an information source and teaching tool for safety managers and trainers. The video can easily be integrated into new miner training programs or annual refresher training.

The Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining (hereafter referred to as the Panel or the TSP) was established by Section 11 of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act). The Panel was charged with providing “independent scientific and engineering review and recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition and fire retardant properties of belt materials in underground coal mining.” The TSP was impaneled by the Honorable Elaine L. Chao and commenced its work on January 9, 2007. At this first meeting, Mr. Richard E. Stickler, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health, asked the Panel to report on many issues including how recent technological advances could be applied to atmospheric monitoring systems, point-type heat sensors, current state of fire-resistant vs. fireproof belt materials, and belt fire suppression systems to improve miner safety. In addition, Mr. Stickler asked the Panel to review belt air velocity limitations. The Panel members attended 12 days of public meetings over a nine-month period. Three of the public meetings were scheduled for the Panel to hear from technical experts and those persons or organizations interested in providing input. The meetings were held in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania with emphasis on belt fires, belt maintenance, belt flammability and toxicity, ventilation, and escape issues; in Salt Lake City with emphasis on ground control and convergence issues; and in Birmingham with emphasis on fire detection, sensors and atmospheric monitoring systems. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel, representatives of the major belt conveyor manufacturers and a representative of the National Mining Association provided discussions at the Coraopolis meeting. In Salt Lake City, Utah, MSHA district managers and ventilation specialists, a member of the Aracoma Mine No. 1 investigation team, a representative of the Bureau of Land Management, and industry and consulting representatives of the Utah Mining Association and the Colorado Mining Association made presentations. In Birmingham, Alabama, atmospheric monitoring system representatives, NIOSH researchers, representatives of coal mining companies, and UMWA workers from two Alabama mining companies made presentations. In addition, a staff member of The Center for Regulatory Effectiveness also presented comments to the Panel. In conjunction with the meetings in Salt Lake City and Birmingham, three-member subcommittees of the Technical Study Panel made field visits to the Skyline Mine, the Aberdeen Mine, and the Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 4. The mine visits were scheduled to see first-hand the mining conditions under which belt air was being utilized as an additional source of intake air for working sections.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a long-wall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

"INTRODUCTION In September 1943, the Bureau of Mines conducted a limited program of churn drilling on the Winskell property in the Shullsburg area of Lafayette County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation by the Bureau of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when special effort war being made to increase the production of metals necessary for the war program.Drilling described supplemented a previous drilling program conducted by the Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators' dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.

The pendant drop interfacial tensiometer is being used to study interfacial phenomena that influence the production of crude oil. A description of the instrument showing the modification of the cell and cell holder is presented. The modified cell and cell holder allow formation of a precise and reproducible drop size, and the image of the drop is easily alined and focused. Interfacial tension measurements and observations of film formation can be conducted at various temperatures with the jacketed cell.

During the past, six, years, the Bureau of Mines has made and. published several hundred analyses of typical crude oils and 'has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crudes. This system is presented here with. It is apparently equate for classifying crude oils into four main groups and has also been found very convenient in studying the geological relationships between crude oils, and the probable refinery yields of valuable products from them. Crude petroleum is morn to be a very complex substance. An analytical statement of its properties must, therefore, consist of two distinct parts, - first, the report of the results of the determinations made by the analyst in the laboratory, - second, the proper arrangement, classification and interpretation of these results so that the analysis, as a mole, will indicate the meaning- and the relative- importance of the essential characteristics of the oil.

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. The association of automotive fuel composition with exhaust reactivity was studied in an experimental program that involved testing with different automotive engines and with gasolines of varied composition. Results showed clearly the exhaust reactivity to increase with increasing levels of polyalkylbenzenes in the fuel. No other systematic patterns of high significance were detected in the association of exhaust reactivity with several broadly defined groups of fuel components. For the purposes of this study, had it been possible, fuel composition should have been defined and expressed in terms of component groups such that the potential for exhaust reactivity would be the same within each group and different from group to group. Classification of fuel components in terms of the paraffins-olefins-aromatics groups does not meet the latter requirements. For appropriate classification of fuel components more information is needed on the combustion .of hydrocarbons in the multicylinder internal combustion engine. Statistical analysis of the mass emissions data showed significant car and fuel effects on hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, total aldehydes, and formaldehyde emission levels and on total photochemical reactivity. Car-fuel interactions were not significant at the 90-pct level. Correlations were found between mass emission parameters and fuel composition.

This chapter includes tables for 1981 that were not available in time for publication of the 1981 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1982. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1982 was estimated at about $20 billion, a decrease of $5 billion compared with that of 1981. The decline in value is the first since 1971 and is the largest percentage drop since 1938. Although the domestic mining industry continued to be troubled by difficulties in attracting capital and by import competition from countries with lower overall production costs, the principal cause of the decline was sharply decreased demand brought on by the worldwide economic slowdown. Metal commodities were impacted most severely with only 4 of 21 metals registering production value gains and only 3 of 21 showing production quantity increases. Overall metal production value decreased 37% from that of 1981, a reflection of the domestic slowdown in the automobile and construction industries, which are major metal users, Overall production value of nonmetals decreased 12% compared with that of 1981, with only 14 out of 44 nonmetals showing increases. Nonmetal production quantities increased over 1981 for only 6 of the 44 nonmetals.

This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of clays, shales, and certain rocks in Wisconsin to determine the feasibility of processing lightweight aggregate in the State. The study was extended to include rotary-kiln testing of a limited number of shale samples, and to an appraisal of the Maquoketa shale resources in eastern Wisconsin. A total of 45 samples of clays, shales, and other argillaceous rocks of Wisconsin were tested. The lower Maquoketa shale is the only material found to date that offers possibilities as a source of material that can be processed in a rotary kiln for lightweight aggregate. Bedrock occurrences of the Maquoketa shale are found in the eastern and southwestern parts of the State. The populous southeastern region of Wisconsin presents a large potential marketing area for lightweight aggregate. For this reason special study was directed to the Maquoketa shale in the eastern district.

The Allah Cooper mine, in Louisa County, Va., formerly was a producer of lead and zinc. It was believed that the critical shortage of leach and zinc and the fact that some ore had been produced at this mine justified exploration of it. A preliminary examination was made on April 30, 1943, by J. E. Hill, a Bureau of Mines Engineer. Diamond drilling was done on the property from November 30 to December 18, 1943, to determine whether the sulfide body extended to depth. One hole drilled to a depth of 650 feet and located so as to cut the Allah Cooper ore shoot about 150 feet below the lowest known mine workings failed to disclose sulfide vein at that depth.

The American public has at all times been prone to discuss important questions that call for consideration and adjustment. Debatable subjects upon which sides may be taken always receive unusual prominence, but other questions equally important may be neglected. The real "paramount issue," calling for remedial action, is the ever-increasing number of deaths caused by preventable accidents. This matter demands the attention of the entire American people; the importance of accident prevention can not be overemphasized, and in many phases of American life, especially among the mining and allied industries, far too little real attention has been given the importance of conserving life and limb by accident prevention. ACCIDENTS COMPARED TO WAR AS A CAUSE OF DEATH Harry T. Hoffman, Wyoming labor commissioner, writes the following: It is one of the peculiar complexes of this rapidly moving age that we all stand aghast at the horrors of war and view with appar- ent indifference the greater havoc of industrial peace. Did you ever stop to think that approximately twice as many people were killed by accidents in the United States in 1929, as there were American soldiers killed in the entire period of the World War? Every employer and every worker should be thoroughly aroused over the tremendous toll levied against industrial forces by accidents which are largely preventable and develop a faith in safety efforts that will fire them with a zeal as pronounced as that of their religion or their patriotism. Let us remember safety-first to the end that the workman shall live to enjoy the fruits of his labor; that his mother shall have the comfort of his arm in her age; that his wife shall not be untimely a widow; that his children shall have a father; that crip- ples and helpless wrecks who were strong men shall no longer be a by-product of industry.
