Sponge iron is the metallic product resulting from the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at a temperature below the fusion point of iron. It has been used for many years in the production of certain grades of high-quality steel, such as tool and cutlery steels. The sponge iron available commercially in limited quantities for such use was produced from high-grade ores that were almost free from the contaminating elements that are generally considered detrimental to the production of certain grades of carbon tool steel. Interest in sponge iron as a scrap substitute was revived when World War II began, when the serious shortage of scrap metals for use in the production of armament caused great concern as to whether steel production could be maintained at the rate necessary for vigorous prosecution of the war effort. A method for evaluating the relative incendivity of detonating cord in natural gas-air mixtures was developed. The method consisted of firing short lengths of cord in bundles to determine the number of strands per bundle which would ignite natural gas-air mixtures 50 percent of the time in the 45-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines. The relative efficiency of a flame quenching agent, potassium acid tartrate (KHT), when incorporated in both the pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) core and the polyethylene sheath, was explored. The effects of sheath thickness, sheath composition, core weight, and core composition were evaluated. The bundle method established a quantitative scale for evaluating the relative incendivity of cords. The relative incendivity determined by the bundle method was then compared with the incendivity of 100-foot lengths of detonating cord when initiated in 8 percent natural gas in the 640-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines.

The increased demand for aluminum for military purposes during World War II necessitated the development of domestic deposits of alumina-bearing ores. Kaolin, siliceous bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore-containing clays have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant. The Bureau of Mines is preparing a series of reports covering investigations of these ores. The tests contained in this report are restricted to sintering and leaching tests on kaolin from South Carolina, where extensive deposits were proved to exist. The leach liquors were found to have substantially the same composition as those produced from the diaspore-containing clays, and therefore it would be expected that no difficulty would be experienced in producing calcined alumina of relatively coarse particle size and with other properties conforming to the specifications for metallurgical-grade alumina.

Methane flows and pressures were measured in mines in the Pittsburgh, Hartshorne, and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. From the data, the permeability of each of these coalbeds was computed. It was found to depend strongly on the type of coal and on the amount of water in the coalbed, and it was found to increase with time. All of the coalbeds had a high-permeability zone adjacent to the face or rib, and the Pittsburgh bed exhibited directional anisotropy. Surprisingly, little or no overburden effect was observed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch beneficiation tests on a waste granite sludge from New Hampshire to determine the feasibility of recovering a reusable silicon carbide product. The granite sludge responded to attrition scrubbing, desliming, and flotation in either alkaline or acid circuits using fatty acid as a collector. Recovery of over 80 percent of the contained silicon carbide at grades of up to 96 percent SiC was obtained.

The Crow Indian Reservation is located in the southeastern part of Montana, stretching from near Billings, in the center of the state, to the Wyoming border in the south. The Office of Surface Mining's Casper, Wyoming, Field Office is responsible for regulating mining and reclamation on Crow tribal land. Federal legislation enacted July 11, 1987, authorized the Indian tribes to implement approved Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Programs. In early 1988 the Crow elected to develop an Abandoned Mine Land Program under the Title IV provisions of SMCRA. The tribe's plan received final approval on January 4, 1989.

How do people behave when they are trying to get out of a fire? Are escape activities different in each incident, or will most actions be predictable across events? Do persons make the same sorts of decisions whether they are responding as individuals or as group members? Because the social costs of fire-related deaths and injuries are likely to continue to rise, societal pressure for greater safety will also undoubtedly increase. There are, therefore, compelling reasons to further our understanding of action in fires. If human behavior in fire is studied scientifically and predicted according to some well-defined principles, the benefits will be significant. Design engineers could incorporate real-world findings into their plans. Equipment manufacturers could gain from insights into how their technology is actually used in fire emergencies. Safety personnel would have a better appreciation of what constitutes adequate evacuation procedures. Trainers could upgrade the content of their courses that teach escape skills. The result would be an overall improvement in the quality of fire preparedness and safety.

This paper is an overview of and introduction to the subject of dust explosions. The purpose is to provide information on the explosibility and ignitability properties of dust clouds that can be used to improve safety in industries that generate, process, use, or transport combustible dusts. The requirements for a dust explosion are: a combustible dust, dispersed in air, a concentration above the flammable limit, the presence of a sufficiently energetic ignition source, and some confinement. An explosion of a fuel in air involves the rapid oxidation of combustible material, leading to a rapid increase in temperature and pressure. The violence of an explosion is related to the rate of energy release due to chemical reactions relative to the degree of confinement and heat losses. The combustion properties of a dust depend on its chemical and physical characteristics, especially its particle size distribution. In this paper, the explosion characteristics of combustible dusts will be compared and contrasted with those of flammable gases using methane as an example. These characteristics include minimum explosible concentration, maximum explosion pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise, limiting oxygen concentration, ignition temperature, and amount of inert dust necessary to prevent flame propagation. The parameters considered include the effects of dust volatility, dust particle size, turbulence, initial pressure, initial temperature, and oxygen concentration. Both carbonaceous and metal dusts will be used as examples. The goal of this research is to better understand the fundamental aspects of dust explosions.

The year 1916 broke all previous records of mineral production in the Territory. As a consequence, there has been a noteworthy increase in the number of mines in active operation or under development, though the greater part of the increased output is the result of greater activity at mines already producing rather than of opening new mines. Owing to available funds not being sufficient to meet the cost of travel in the interior of the Territory during the winter months, the Federal mine inspector was unable during the spring to visit the placer mines of the interior as has been his custom in the past. However, by working in close cooperation with the Territorial in- spector, who left Juneau in June to take the first boat down the Yukon to Fairbanks after the spring break-up, it was possible to visit hurriedly all the larger mining centers of the Territory. The Territorial inspector covered the districts from Fairbanks to Nome and the Federal inspector covered those of southeastern and south- western Alaska. A number of applicants have begun mining coal on ground held under free-use 10-acre permits, and have furnished coal for local use. The larger leasing units in the Bering River and Matanuska coal fields have been advertised and applications for leases have been submitted. These applications came too late in the fall for active development to begin before the end of the year. The Government railroad has been built from Anchorage to the center of the Matanuska coal field, and private interests have under- taken the building of a standard-gage road from a point known as Goose City on Controller Bay to Canyon Creek, in the Bering River field. Capital has become interested in the oil fields on Controller Bay, and plans have been made for more active exploration and production. The work of the Federal mine inspector is still handicapped by the lack of funds for additional field assistants and of the office ac- commodations necessary for carrying on the work with the efficiency that its importance warrants.

The Bureau of Mines conducted drilling experiments in the laboratory with a commercially available percussive drill that has an independent rotational system. Eight rock types with a wide range of physical properties were drilled under several combinations of rotational speed, drilling thrust, and operating pressure. Penetration rates and energy per unit volume correlated well with the coefficient of rock strength as shown graphically. Size-distribution analyses of some of the drill cuttings show how particle size varies with rotation speed and rock hardness. In general, changing the rotational speed has a greater influence on the penetration rate in softer rocks, with penetration rate increasing with increasing rotational speed.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) defines an independent contractor as "any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine." Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who perform work at coal mines and at noncoal mines.

The Bureau of Mines monitored a rock-burst-prone pillar in a metallic ore vein, up to and through failure, to measure its reactions to increasing loads, as it was mined. Three parameters were monitored: the stress changes at chosen points within the pillar, the displacement characteristics of the drift above the pillar, and the micro-seismic activity in and around the pillar. In descending order of effectiveness, the microseismic technique, vibrating wire stress measurements, and displacement measurements reflected the pillar reactions, and all showed good correlation to one another. A major rock burst in the pillar, which destroyed about 100 feet of drift above the pillar, occurred at the end of this study. This burst was preceded by a large anomaly in the microseismic activity in the failure area.

Are you afraid of the dark? Of course not, at least not since you were about six years old, anyway. But early man was - afraid of the dark, and he had good reason to be. Since he had no illumination other than fire and moonlight, he was at a disadvantage when it came to mixing it up with some of his fellow creatures. Sabre-toothed tigers, for example, could probably see quite well In the dark, and they were very real enemies. Sabre-toothed tigers haven't been seen in mining country for some time now; but it's st111 dark In a mine and, make no mistake about it, there are still enemies in the dark. The enemies are all the things that can injure you if they are not seen. Modern mines can be safe places to work for the trained miner who follows good work practices. But there are mining machines that make sabre- toothed tigers look like pussycats, and if you can't see well enough they can be ten times more dangerous.

Growing concern from labor unions, regulatory agencies, and industry about the safety of a prevalent underground coal mining method which utilizes remote control has prompted human factors field evaluation of mining activities. Remote control operations were implemented with little consideration given to human-system interactions. Ideally, collecting and analyzing information prior to implementing new technology would have helped to address potential problems. One such problem that operators and other mine personnel are faced with is the question of where they should safely position themselves to avoid injury while remotely operating machinery. To determine work methods employed by machine operators before and after implementation of the new method, work sampling techniques have been used to provide data about positioning of face crew members at different points in the mining cycle. This data provides information for optimal positioning, leading to safer operating procedures and identifying training shortfalls.

"Putting safety over , " using the accepted meaning of the word " Safety " as the elimination of personal injury , resolves itself into the prevention or disassociation of a combination of two distinct circumstances . Opportunity for accidents is afforded by conditions that are likely to cause injuries , but such injuries are effected only when the human body is placed in a position to be injured . As will be discussed later , in mining , as in most other industries , the degree of safety experienced depends upon the disassociation of these two circumstances , first , by making working conditions as free from hazards as possible , thus affording the minimum opportunity for accidents to occur , and secondly , the training of employees to recognize dangerous conditions and adopt measures to protect themselves and their fellow employees against injury . The responsibility for preventing accidents rests upon every person employed in an industry from the directing head down through the individual workers , and the safety of that industry will be proportionate to the extent that each member appreciates and accepts his individual responsibility . Hence , safety becomes decidedly a personal equation . Whether the personal equation will be so applied as to result in the greatest freedom from accidents , however , depends largely upon the initiative of those directing the industry . Putting safety over in a small mine presents the personal equation in a more intensified manner than the same endeavor in a large mine . Large mines , owing to their size and financial standing, can usually main ta in and support an effective safety organization with one or more directors who devote all their time to the supervision of safety work . Most small mines with a limited number of employees and limited capital can not afford and are not justified in supporting a paid safety organization , and must depend upon the close cooperation of their working force in maintaining safe working conditions . On the other hand , if proper supervision is exercised the small mine has in some respects advantages not afforded by the large mine . The limited workings in a small mine should afford less opportunities for dangerous conditions to arise and permits more frequent inspection of the entire mine . The small working force permits more latitude in the selection of employees known or believed to be either safe workers or amenable to safety educational work. Likewise , a small working force facilitates the carrying on of safety educational work and allows a closer personal contact between the superintendent and his employees .

This longitudinal field study was designed to encourage Appalachian coal miners in West Virginia and Pennsylvania to engage in hearing-protection behaviors. Method: Participants were mailed postcards that featured either a positive, negative, or neutral message on the outside of the postcard and a message encouraging hearing protection behaviors on the inside. The first posttest measurement of the effectiveness of the persuasive messages was conducted about a week after the postcards were mailed. The delayed posttest measurement was conducted six weeks later. Results: Responses from 307 coal miners revealed that the positive or neutral messages generated significantly more self-reported hearing protection behaviors than the negative message. Identical results were obtained in a delayed posttest assessment of miners' self-reported hearing protection behaviors. The positive message was also more effective than either the neutral or negative message in preventing defensive mechanisms from emerging over time. Impact on Industry: Positive and neutral messages were convincingly more than negative messages in facilitating self-reported hearing protection behaviors among coal miners. Gold continued to dominate mineral production in the group of volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, which comprise the British Commonwealth nation of Fiji. The Fijian mineral sector, however, remained of minor importance in terms of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment to the economy of the country, which was primarily agrarian with sugar as its mainstay. The Vatukoula gold-silver mine on the north side of the main island of Viti Levu remained the largest and most important mining operation, as well as Fiji's only operating metalliferous mine. In October, Western Mining Corp. (Fiji) Ltd. (WMCF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian-registered Western Mining Corp. Holdings Ltd., increased its interest in the Vatukoula joint venture from 10% to 20% by exercising its option with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., also of Australia. The assumption of mine management operations at Vatukoula in 1983, with its attendant influx of additional capital and technological expertise, enabled WMCF to increase both efficiency and output at the mine during 1984. Higher output was obtained owing to an increase in underground ore production, which was partly offset by a reduction in opencut tonnage, as well as to modifications in the recovery circuit. Rate of recovery increased from about 15% to over 82% of the gold contained in the ore and from about 40% to 45% of the contained silver.
