With the continuous increase in ore mineralogical complexity coupled with decreasing head grades, there is a need for mining industries to process large tonnages of material to meet global metal demands. Smarter, cheaper techniques are required to better map ore mineralogical variations proceeding to pre-concentration (flotation) stages for higher performance and metal recoveries. This paper is aimed at briefly reviewing previous studies on different selected ore mineralogy, with the focus on their pulp chemistry, to identify relationships which aid quicker flotation feed variation monitoring. Very little published work exists linking pulp chemistry parameters to flotation feed mineralogical variation. A successful application implies maximising grades at higher metal recoveries and reducing the cost of reagent for a better performing flotation circuit. In many respects a porphyry copper ore concentrator plant can be considered as a simple system. Chalcopyrite typically liberates well at relatively coarse sizes, and even low grade ores are amenable to upgrading 20 to 30 times to produce concentrate grades in excess of 25 % in very simple Rougher- Regrind-Cleaner+Scavenger flotation circuits. The flotation response of chalcopyrite has been well characterised in many fundamental and applied research studies and the conditions necessary to depress pyrite and other floating gangue species are well understood. But what happens to the particle surfaces when you have a 50 km pipeline between the grinding circuit and the flotation plant? How does the seasonal variation in water quality affect your ability to control pulp chemistry? What impact does the relative concentration of the different sulphide species have on their separability? Why do two plants that receive nominally the same ore produce consistently different results? And most importantly, what do you need to do to improve the performance of both plants? To answer these and other questions, a focussed sampling and analysis programme was carried out at the Las Tórtolas flotation plants in 2018 and 2019. The work included full down-the-bank sampling, hot floats, the use of radioactive tracers for determining residence time distribution profiles, gas dispersion measurements, detailed mineralogy by size across the circuits and multiple regrind surveys. This comprehensive study was augmented by analysis of historical mineralogy, geometallurgy and operating data using modern data science techniques, and has provided the foundation for current and future optimisation initiatives. Recent experience has shown that all underground workplaces in the Campine Coalfield in Belgium will require controlled cooling within three years. Considering the socio-economic and legal importance of the climatic problems underground, IREA has undertaken studies in forecasting the climate of future workplaces, planning the necessary cooling equipment and optimizing efficiency in the existing cooling equipment. These studies are being carried out using the climate forecasting program of Bergbau-Forschung. So far, the German model has been obliged to utilize manually measured data from a few workplaces in the Campine. As the model does not fit very well with these measurements, it has been thought necessary to' develop a system of continuous data acquisition and transmission. This system is being tested in the Beringen mine of the N.V. Kempense Steenkollenmijnen. In the first part of this paper the digital tranmission system is described; in the second the sensors used to collect the necessary climatic data are presented, and in the third some results are given.

"Rio Tinto’s Western Australian expansion, combined with mining within structurally complex geology and increasingly below the water table, presents challenges in effective slope management to ensure safe and economic mining.The Geotechnical Management System (GMS) was developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to manage geotechnical risks identified during the design process and implementation, and to ensure feedback based on the ‘as-found’ conditions. The GMS utilizes a risk-based approach to geotechnical risk management and is centred on the geotechnical risk and hazard assessment management system (GRAHAMS). GRAHAMS is used to assess pre- and post-control risk for future potential risks (planned slopes), current risks (as-built slopes), and actual geotechnical hazards (realized risks) identified in the pit. This serves as a core operational risk management tool in identifying and prioritizing key risk sectors and management of critical controls. The system’s database reporting functionality supports effective communication of operational risks to operational personnel, as well as reporting the risk profile across operations to management.A rigorous engagement process between design engineers and sitebased engineers is implemented to ensure that key design assumptions, limitations, risks, and opportunities are understood by the site teams. This information, together with mine plan schedule details, is used to assess the design risk and develop appropriate controls. These controls typically include slope performance monitoring and slope reconciliation. The design feedback loop is closed through sharing of key slope performance and reconciliation data with the design teams.The GMS has been successfully implemented in RTIO pits and is fundamental to successful geotechnical slope management. Improved characterization of design assumptions has allowed for re-assessment of the pit design and improved hazard management in high-risk pits. The GMS, GRAHAMS, and other processes reduce the incidence of unexpected slope instability. Improved understanding of rock mass conditions has allowed for economic optimization through redesign of slopes, allowing for an improved understanding of risk and fewer unexpected conditions (surprises), hence an increased realized value."

Optimum Coal Mine comprises numerous defunct, active, and future mining sections. The mine is primarily a large opencast coal mine; however, underground mining activities will be increasing steadily over the next five years. Opencast and underground mining activities have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. To ensure that the mine will be able to continue with its mining operations in the catchment, the extent of this impact requires that substantial intervention and mitigation measures need to be implemented to ensure the environmental integrity and economic use of the catchment's water resources. In developing a sustainable long-term mine water management strategy, numerous scenarios had to be analysed. The various scenarios are a combination of water and land management activities. The main components of the mine's integrated water management strategy include: ? Management of water recharge by continual and appropriate rehabilitation of disturbed land ? Beneficial re-use of impacted mine water for coal plant process water and mining operations ? Reclamation and desalination of remaining excess impacted mine water to potable standard. From the mine's long-term water balance, it is evident that the continued implementation of numerous water management actions is required to mitigate the water resources impact in a sustainable manner. In addition, the installation of a water reclamation plant at Optimum Coal Mine (15Ml/day) is a key step for the mine to achieve a zero impact target.

The present study focuses on utilising the electrocoagulation (EC) process for the treatment of process water generated in an iron ore beneficiation plant for safe discharge and reuse. Removal of heavy metals like Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Pb which was found in higher concentration along with some other impurities exceeding the permissible and discharge limit were attempted. The influence of different electrode material, current density, inter-electrode distance, and solution conductivity was explored for effective removal of the metal ions. Experimental results infer that almost 99.95% Fe, 97.77% Cr, 73.44% Cu, 99.34% Pb and 88.69% Mn was removed using aluminum electrodes at monopolar mode at a current density of 68.50 A/m2, inter-electrode distance of 1 cm and solution conductivity of 1.033mS after 60 min of EC. In addition, removal of other toxins like TDS, turbidity, salinity and conductivity etc. was also assessed during the process. Removal of such heavy metal ions by EC was found to follow 1st order kinetics with electric energy consumption of 3.93 kWh/m3, electrode consumption of 0.1191 kg/m3 and operating cost of 0.6115 US$/m3 respectively. Fluid-bed technology is a key pyrometallurgical step for processing a vast number of ores and concentrates. Over the past 50 years, considerable research and development efforts have been made by Metso Outotec to expand the application window of this technology. This paper illustrates different processing routes where fluid-bed technology plays an important role in the production of the copper. The fluid-bed processes utilized are partial, sulfate-producing, and dead roasting. The focus of this paper considers the advantages of the dead-roasting process. This “zero waste” process can provide copper oxides, steam, electrical power, and sulfuric acid for new and existing solvent extraction–electrowinning plants. In a case where an operation is running out of oxidic ores and concentrates, fluid-bed roasting can be applied to close this gap and provide the required copper oxides in a sustainable way.

This paper shows the importance of performing probabilistic analyses in open pits, especially for mine planning, which can lead to more efficient ore extraction and meeting the acceptability criteria for safety in mine slopes. Three-dimensional stability analyses were performed to evaluate the future geometry of a large open pit for iron ore extraction in Brazil. The strength parameters of the lithologies were calibrated using ruptures in the pit walls. After determining the factors of safety (FoSs) from the calibrated parameters, probabilistic analyses were performed using the total range of values of each parameter under different field conditions to verify the reliability of the initial analysis. In this sense, it was possible to plot the probability of failure (PoF) and the FoS on the graph of slope height versus slope interramp angle (IRA) for the future pit in each lithology. IRA recommendations are made for two scenarios: (1) the best scenario: dry without ubiquitous joints and (2) the worst scenario: the water table at 10 m depth with ubiquitous joints in the most unfavourable direction. The results show that probabilistic evaluation is an important tool for establishing alert mechanisms in slopes that can be termed stable.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

The increasing availability of tools on the web provides a great opportunity for the research community to boost investigation by accessing computational resources from all over the world. For example, data analytics libraries implemented in languages like Python can be accessed through many open and commercial platforms, therefore providing researchers with a common set of tools or shared datasets. Unfortunately, that is not the case with research in resource assessment and mine planning, where the most standardised tools are commercial applications designed to work on the desktop, but there are not many standard platforms for research. As a result, researchers from different groups often need to start from scratch in order to develop their work, and rarely share implementations details. Similarly, apart from a few publicly available examples, there is a lack of common datasets that are validated and can be used to compare results between different approaches. In this paper, we introduce a platform that provides tools for resource assessment and mine planning, which can be accessed remotely utilising Jupyter Notebooks. In its current version, the platform provides (i) definition and implementation of basic structures for managing samples and models (loading, saving, adding or removing columns, etc.), (ii) definition of experimental and modelled variograms for spatial continuity analysis, (iii) definition of standard interpolation methods in resource evaluation (inverse distance and kriging), (iv) definition of standard problems in mine planning (ultimate pit and precedence constrained production scheduling), (v) generation of 2D standard graphs like grade distribution, conditional means, tonnage-grade, and production plans (vi) a set of datasets, which can be used for case studies, and (vii) a set of notebooks with examples and documentation. In this paper, we introduce the platform and show some examples that illustrate some of the possibilities that it has for research and education in the area of resource assessment and mine planning.

This article discusses the critical role of leadership in the technology adoption process within organizations, particularly in industries like mining, where innovation is essential for maintaining competitiveness and operational efficiency. It highlights the limitations of traditional technology adoption models, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Diffusion of Innovations (DOI), and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), which focus on individual factors and overlook the strategic and organizational roles of leadership. The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. The model emphasizes the balance between exploration (fostering innovation) and exploitation (ensuring operational efficiency). The findings suggest that transformational leadership fosters innovation by encouraging risk-taking and creativity, while transactional leadership ensures efficient technology integration. The article also identifies key barriers to technology adoption, such as organizational resistance to change, which can be mitigated through adaptive leadership that addresses employee concerns. The research emphasizes the importance of a supportive organizational culture and cross-functional collaboration, which are essential for successful technology adoption. The study concludes by offering practical recommendations for leaders to foster a culture of innovation, manage resistance, and balance short-term efficiency with long-term technological advancement.

"Drought conditions and the possible lack of sufficient raw water supply are a constant reminder to the Southern African diamond miner of the need to minimize raw (new) water input while maintaining or expanding mine throughput.Since water input volume is directly related to water output (loss) volume, mainly to the tailings, it is obviously beneficial to dewater the tailings as much as possible. However, this may not always be as easily achieved as first thought. Owing to the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the unique chemical profile of each raw water source, dewatering of the slurry is not a standard process that can be applied equally across the entire diamond industry.This paper presents a first-step strategy that kimberlite diamond mine operators should consider and apply to meet and exceed their watersaving targets. Introduction A common metric for measuring water use efficiency in a metallurgical plant is the amount of raw water used per ton of head feed treated (m3/t). The metric includes all water recycled from the dewatering process and from the tailings storage facility (TSF), and the only inputs are tons of ROM ore and cubic metres of raw water make-up to replace water lost to evaporation, seepage, and lock-up at the TSF (Figure 1).The volume of new raw water available to the process is not unlimited and a maximum monthly allowance is typically set during the mine permitting process. Consequently, if the volume of water lost exceeds the volume of new water available or alternatively, in times of drought where the allowable volume is unavailable, the plant has no other option but to reduce throughput.However, if the plant operator is able reduce the volume of water lost to the TSF, the plant will have additional capacity to either increase tonnage throughput or sustain nameplate capacity during periods of severe drought. The obvious conclusion, therefore, is to reduce the volume of water lost to the tailings by improving the efficiency of the dewatering process (typically gravity thickening) simply by increasing the density of the tailings being discharged. In practice, however, the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the chemical profile of the raw water source used imply that at some mine sites, solid/liquid separation (or settling) of tailings slurries at the dewatering process is more easily achieved than at others. In these cases, simple practical steps such as firstly improving the flocculant reagent make-up and dosing control, and secondly focusing on thickener discharge control, are the only requirements for enhancing water recovery at the dewatering circuit. At other mine sites however, solid/liquid separation of the tailings may not be achieved at all, in which case efforts to increase water recovery by improving reagent dosage and thickener control would be fruitless unless the colloidal properties of the thickener feed slurry are modified."

DEM simulations were used in this research to study the screening process of a novel variable amplitude equal thickness vibration screen (VAETVS). The response regularity of mass distribution and granular moving velocity at the different screen panels to feed rate was investigated and the predictive model for the unit area processing load was proposed. The influence of aperture size, the size variance, and the opening ratio on the mass passing-distribution and overall screening performance, respectively, were revealed. The results showed that the response model of the unit area load Ф to the feed rate Q can be concluded as Ф∝0.324×Q. The moving velocity of particles also showed a positive relevance to the feed rate, besides which the passing rate of fine-grained material at the feed end was negatively related to the aperture size, while the case was reversed in the feed end. The increase of aperture variance AV enhanced the passing ability of small particles at the feed end,and reduced the misplaced ratio of the large particles at the discharge end. A better screening efficiency can be obtained when the average aperture size of the entire sieve is 7.5 mm, with the aperture variance of 1 mm between the adjacent panels. When the combination of the opening ratio is 35-35-40, a better screening effect can be achieved. Keywords: Equal thickness screening, DEM, particulate velocity, mass distribution regulation

The Southern African region contains abundant gold tailing heaps that are an environmental concern due to dust pollution and chemical contamination of nearby water bodies. Nevertheless, these heaps contain gold with potential to be extracted for financial gain. In this study, the feasibility of extraction of gold from a Witwatersrand gold tailings using glycine was investigated using a two-level full factorial design. Effects of variables such as glycine concentration at levels of 0.5–1.5 M with a solid–liquid ratio of 50–200 g/L were investigated. Although the solid–liquid ratio used in this study was below the industrial norm, it provides a starting point for investigating the applicability of this technology. To enhance the gold extraction, potassium permanganate pretreatment and copper ion addition were adopted. The results revealed that 91.4% gold extraction was achieved after 24 h pre-treatment of the tailings using 2 g/L potassium permanganate followed by subsequent leaching using 1.5 M glycine at pH 12, with 50 g/L solid–liquid ratio and 2 g/L copper ions. Statistically, the solid–liquid ratio and potassium permanganate pre-treatment of the tailings were found to be significant at 95% confidence interval, whilst interactions of copper ions and glycine concentration were significant factors. The work demonstrates that potassium permanganate pre-treatment prior to glycine leaching of low-grade secondary gold resources, such as tailings, can be beneficial. Furthermore, the methodology developed in this work provides an opportunity for further investigation of the recovery of gold hosted in complex mineralogical matrices.

The free ligand (FL) model is an intuitive model to calculate the equilibrium concentrations in solvent extraction (SX) based on the distribution coefficient (Kd) at infinite dilution and the fraction of free ligand available for extraction. In this work, the FL model is validated to account for co-extraction of Ni and for designing the extraction and scrubbing sections of Co/Ni separation in a base metal refinery. Cyanex 272 is employed as a selective Co extractant in the process to yield high purity Ni. To enhance the loading capacity of the extractant, 50 mol% of NaOH is pre-loaded into it. Experimental and FL modelling results show that four equilibrium stages are required to purify the 99% Ni feed to a 99.97% Ni raffinate. The 53.59% co-extract with 26.76% free ligand is purified with a reflux scrub of 30 g Co/L in one equilibrium stage to 99.01%, Co in the scrubbed extract. The FL model as well as the Co/Ni/Na-analysis of the aqueous phase confirm that in the scrubbing section, Ni in the extract is mainly replaced by Co. Finally, in the one stage stripper the Co concentration in the scrubbed extract is increased from 5.6 g Co/L in the extract to 30.5 g Co/L that is partially used as reflux scrub liquor.

SYNOPSIS The paper gives a background to the water hazards of the so-called West Wits Line and refers to some geological aspects of the Wonderfontein Valley in which the West Driefontein mine property lies. It describes the precautions taken against flooding during shaft sinking, development and stoping; these include cover hole drilling with cementation, provision for water storage in worked-out areas, installation of water tight bulkhead doors and pumping capacity well in excess of the mine's normal requirements. The plan of campaign adopted after the inrush took place is explained and the reorganization and expansion of pumping arrangements are discussed. When it became clear that the only means of saving the mine was to construct plugs to isolate the inrush while still maintaining all emergency pumping measures, the work was put in hand with the utmost dispatch. In considering the design of the plugs a number of major factors had to be taken into account. The most vital was the need for speed which was complicated by difficulty of access to the plug sites because of the huge volumes of water flowing in the drives. How this and other factors affecting plug design and construction, leakage problems, sequence of operations and final closure of the valves, were overcome is detailed in the paper. INTRODUCTION The inrush of water into the West Driefontein mine, the biggest gold producer in the world, which began on 26th October, 1968 and continued unabated for 23 days before the flood was stemmed, was unprecedented in the history of mining. Also unprecedented were the tremendous efforts and organization which made it possible to bring the situation under control and so save the mine from being lost for a matter of years. BACKGROUND Before going into details of how the situation was brought under control it is appropriate to consider the background to the event. The water problem on the so-called West Wits Line has been recognized for many years. As far back as 1912 the Pullinger Shaft, situated in the centre of what is now the Venterspost mine property, had to be abandoned because there were no means then available of coping with the large quantity of water encountered. To appreciate what vast quantities of water were involved, it helps to refer to some geological aspects of the Wonderfontein valley in which the West Driefontein property lies. The narrow tabular Witwatersrand gold-bearing beds, which dip at about 25 degrees towards the south, are overlain by a surface layer of dolomite which reaches a maximum thickness of some 4,000 ft at West Driefontein. A number of vertical syenitic dykes intersect the valley more or less at right angles to its course (Fig. 1). These dykes are about 150 ft thick on average and are spaced at about eight-mile intervals in the West Driefontein area. They penetrate both the dolomite and the Witwatersrand beds and as they are impervious to water they divide the valley into a series of large underground water compartments.

The research described in this paper was done to confirm the Upper Group 2 (UG2) PlatMine peak pillar strength formula (Watson et al., 2007), which was determined from a back-analysis of failed and unfailed pillars. Underground measurements were made on a stable pillar that was loaded by firstly reducing it’s length and then by mining the surrounding pillars until pillar failure took place. The pillar was instrumented with suitably positioned strain cells and closure meters, which allowed both the average pillar stress and strain to be determined. The paper describes the methodology applied to identify a suitable position for the instrumentation, as well as the results. A stress/strain curve is presented for a UG2 pillar with a w/h ratio of 2.0, at Booysendal Platinum Mine. The measured pillar strength was similar to the predicted strength using the PlatMine pillar strength formula for UG2 pillars. The PlatMine formula has been successfully implemented on Booysendal Platinum Mine, and about 3 670 pillars have been cut without a single failure. An additional revenue of US$1.3 billion was calculated for the 25-year life of the mine as a direct result of the improved pillar design, given the January 2020 platinum group metals basket price. An extended life of mine and better mining efficiencies will also be realized.
