Tungsten carbide is a fine grey powder. It can be formed into shapes by compacting with the addition of a binder. Spherical particles are generally preferred in additive manufacturing as they pack together more efficiently than non-spherical particles, promoting a uniform powder bed density, better flowability, and elimination of internal cavities and fractures, resulting in a better quality of final product. The particle shape of powders can be transformed into spherical through the process of spheroidization. However, due to its high melting point, tungsten carbide could be difficult to spheroidize. Tungsten carbide was spheroidized using an inductively coupled radio frequency plasma at various plate powers between 9 and 15 kW. The influence of additional H2 in the sheath gas on the chemical composition of the tungsten carbide product was also investigated by means of XRD, which indicated that WC is converted to W2C at higher H2 concentrations. Optical analysis of SEM micrographs indicated that the spheroidization ratio increased with increased plasma energy.

Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

A willemite concentrate consisting mainly of willemite (55.3%) and dolomite (15.6%) was reduced in a tube furnace with charcoal as reductant. The effects of temperature and varying reductant additions on zinc extraction were studied. A zinc recovery of 86% was achieved with 20% reductant in the charge at 1100°C. During reduction, the calcium oxide generated through calcination of the dolomite promoted decomposition of the willemite, thus lowering the temperature at which reduction took place. The presence of CaO improved the zinc recovery at all temperatures studied. The best zinc recovery (93%) was obtained in the presence of 5% CaO, 20% charcoal reductant, and at a temperature of 1100°C. The results show that the willemite concentrate studied has great potential to be used as a raw material for the Waelz process.

Dimension stone mining is Increasing because of growing demand from the building and construction industries. Diamond wire saw cutting is a popular dimension stone mining technique around the world. Estimation of the production cost for this method is critical for these operations. n this research a production cost model was developed for the mining of granite using a diamond wire saw. Cost and production data were collected from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan for a 4.5-year period, and analysed to identify the cost components. Fuel (34%), labour (15%), consumables (40%), and maintenance (5%) were found to be the four major cost components in this operation. A regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating statistically significant variables was developed. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables costs. Finally, a production cost model based on the consumption cost of diamond wire is presented. The model was verified using actual production cost data, which indicated 95% (R2 = 0.95) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost values. The model may help field engineers in computing their dimension stone operational cost during the cutting phase.

Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL GEOCHEMICAL EXPLORATION SYMPOSIUM (Summary Account) This Symposium, co-sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Society of Economic Geologists, was held in Toronto, Canada in April, 1970. Over 700 delegates attended from 26 countries. Ninety papers were presented at the symposium and another 18 papers were read by title. The programme included: An Opening Session, Five General Sessions, a session on Remote Sensing Methods, a session on Geochemical Prospecting for Petroleum and Natural Gas, a session on Primary Halos and Lithogeochemical Methods, and a session on Statistics and Evaluation of Geochemical Data. The delegates were welcomed by Dr J. M. Harrison, President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Dr C. H. Smith, Regional Vice-President, North America of the Society of Economic Geologists. Dr D. R. Derry of Toronto delivered the opening address to the Symposium entitled 'Geochemistry-the link between ore genesis and exploration'. Dr Derry considered the various hypotheses on the origin of economic mineral deposits and expressed his belief that the next ten years will show evidence of an increased proportion of ore bodies that owe their origin, at some stage in time, to supergene agencies. He stressed that 'there are no sharp divisions between processes that form and destroy ore bodies at or near surface and those that form or destroy them at a depth of 20 kilometres in the earth's crust. The more we understand about the migration and concentration of metals the more accurately we can apply this knowledge to searching for unknown concentrations, whether at rock surface or at depth. To learn more about these processes of ore genesis we must rely on geochemical studies co-ordinated with field observations'. The five general sessions included accounts of progress in geochemical prospecting in different countries of the world, case histories describing the application of soil, stream sediment, geobotanical and biogeochemical techniques, papers on the behaviour of different elements under varied environmental conditions, discussions on analytical methods and the use of stable isotopes in mineral exploration. It is anticipated that the proceedings of the Symposium will be published late in 1970 or early in 1971 as a Special Volume of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. All registrants at the Symposium will receive a copy of this publication and copies will be available for purchase. At a special meeting called during the Symposium, charter members of the Association of Exploration Geochemists approved a constitution and elected an interim Council which will organize procedure and formulate policy during the coming year. The interim president of the Association is J. Alan Coope, Newmont Mining Corporation of Canada Limited, Toronto, Canada. More information on the constitution and membership in the Association will be distributed to learned societies and technical magazines in the near future. Membership will be open to exploration geochemists in all countries of the world. SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL FOR PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS Report on Registration The Professional Engineers Act (Act 81 of 1968) came into force on the 14th February, 1969. At the time it was recognised that the success of the Act would depend in large measure on the extent to which engineers in South Africa would become registered professional engineers in terms of the provisions of the Act. The promulgation of the Act and its provisions relevant to registration were the subject of considerable publicity during 1969. This has resulted in a rate of application for registration far beyond the capacity of the very active committees set up for this purpose by the South African Council for Professional Engineers (SACPE). "This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. IntroductionDrilling and blasting contribute most to the operational cost in opencast mining and have the potential to influence the cost of downstream operations (Aipanda, 2011). The drillability of rocks depends not only on the rock properties, but also on the drilling tools and operational variables. In rotary drilling, rotational speed, thrust, and flushing are the operational variables, and are known as the controllable parameters. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. Although, many attempts have been made to correlate drillability with rock properties, the rock characteristics affecting rotary drilling have not been entirely defined (Hartman, 1962; Kahraman, Bilgin, and Feridunoglu, 2003). Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are excellent metal resources. Mineralogical characteristics of different components in WPCBs were analysed in this study. Organic-enriched particles, fibreglass-enriched particles, associated particles and metal-enriched particles were obtained by density gradient method. Subsequently, the elemental composition, morphology, dissociation characteristics, functional group composition and phase composition of different components were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM+EDS), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Elemental analysis results show that Cu is mainly contained in metal-enriched particles. SEM+EDS analysis results demonstrate that ideal dissociation can be achieved when the WPCBs are broken to -1 mm. Organic matter particles are enriched with carbon and oxygen elements, while fibreglass particles and associated particles mainly contain Al and Si elements, verified by XRD analysis. FT-IR results show that hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups exist widely in all components, caused by widespread organic matter. This study reveals the important properties of different components in WPCBs, which is of great significance for the subsequent separation process. Graphite blocks are currently used in the concentrate - slag zone in primary PGM smelters, and can possibly be extended to the matte zone. This project evaluates the interaction between synthetic matte and graphite blocks on a laboratory scale. Static crucible tests were performed where graphite crucibles (prepared from standard and high-grade graphite) were filled with synthetic matte (27.7 per cent S ? 46.1 per cent Fe ? 17.0 per cent Ni ? 9.2 per cent Cu) and heated to 1550°C for different time periods (1?5 days). Matte penetration was evaluated using a SEM, while graphite dissolution was evaluated by measuring the carbon content of the matte with a LECO carbon analyser. Matte penetrated into standard grade graphite up to approximately 2 mm, while matte infiltration into the high grade graphite was limited to the immediate hot face. The saturation solubility of graphite in the synthetic matte at 1550°C was 0.43 per cent. Copper, iron, nickel, and sulphur were detected in an accretion that formed in the water-cooled part of the furnace. This accretion consists of mainly Cu-S and Cu-Fe-S based phases.

For many years, mine-impacted water has been regarded as a problem and linked to long-term environmental liabilities. However, this water can be a renewable and a sustainable resource, provided that it is managed in a responsible and sensible manner. South Africa’s National Water Resource Strategy (NWRS, 2013) considers water that can be used to contribute to economic activity to be a water resource. Although all water resources are considered as belonging to the State, government does not appear to have meaningfully explored the use of mineimpacted water to contribute to the country’s economic activity. Africa is blessed with more sunshine than anywhere else, apart from Australia, yet we see no rollout of vast quantities of solar panels to ensure every African family has access to affordable power. This suggests that governments are incapable of managing such a free resource. At the same time, apart from the equatorial areas, water is a seriously constrained resource and yet we expect the same entities to manage a commodity none of us can live without. This paper explores the conversion of mine-impacted water from waste to a resource and how the inclusion of other stakeholders (such as water users, landowners, and ordinary South Africans) could benefit the process.

Two methods of stress measurements have been executed on the surface and underground to con-struct an oil storage cavern using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method. The first measurement has been performed to make a design of the caverns before excavating and the second to confirm the stress state during excavation. Six measurements have been carried out in the hydro-fracturing test at the depths between –17.8 and 54.5m from the sea level and a single measurement in the overcoring test in a single borehole at the depth of –21m from the sea level. The ratios of the maximum horizontal to vertical stress measured using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method are 2.95 and 3.1, respectively. Also, the orientations of the maximum horizontal stress are N53E and N58E. These measurements show that both methods give almost same results and significant horizontal stresses are acting on this cavern. Deux méthodes de mesure de contrainte ont étè exécutées sur la surface de terrain et sous la terre pour construire une cavité de stockage de pétrole en utilisant l’hydro-fracturing et l’overcoring. La première mesure a étè faite pour le plan des cavités avant l’excavation et le seconde pour con-firmer l’état de contrainte durant l’excavation. Six measures ont étè faites dans le teste de l’hydro-fracturing à la profondeur entre –17.8 et 54.5m depuis l’élèvation maritime. Une seule mesure a étè faite dans le teste de l’overcoring dans une seule trou de songdage à la profondeur de –21m. Le ratios de la maximale contrainte horizontale à la contrainte verticale mesure par les deux méthodes sont 2.95 et 3.1, respectivement. Les orientations de la maximale contrainte horizontale sont N53E et N58E. Ce montre que les deux méthodes donnent presque m me résultats et la contrainte im-portante est activée sur ces cavités. Zwei Druckmessungen wurden durchgeführt auf der Erdoberfläche und im Innern von Ölspeicher-kavernen unter vergleichender Anwendung des Hydrofraktionierungs- und des Kernbohrungsver-fahrens. Die erste Messung wurde durchgeführt um einen Plan der Kavernen vor der Herstellung zu erstellen und die zweite um die Druckverhältnisse während der Bohrung zu überprüfen. Sechs Messugnen wurden mit der Hydrofraktionierungsmethode bei einer Tiefe von 17,8m und 54,5m unter dem Meeresspiegel und eine einzige Messung mit der Kernbohrungsmethode in einem Bohr-loch bei einer Tiefe von 21m unter dem Meeresspiegel vorgenommen. Das Verhältnis von maxi-malem horizontalem zu vertikalem Druck bei der Hydrofraktions- und der Kernbohrungsmedthode ist 2,95 bzw. 3,1. The Chemwes uranium plant treats old gold-plant residues from the Sttifontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines by acid leaching, belt filtration, countercurrent ion exchange (ClX), and Bufflex solvent extraction (SX). The uranium is recovered by precipitation as ammonium diuranate. Absorption and elution in the CIX section are achieved in four NIMCIX columns operating as two parallel streams. Each loading column is 4,85 m in diameter and contains 12 absorption stages. The elution columns are 3 m in diameter and contain 8 stages. The eluant used is 10 per cent sulphuric acid at ambient temperature. During the commissioning and initial operating periods reported here, the plant yielded an average barren solution of 1,6 p.p.m. of U3O8 from a feed with a mean U3O8 concentration of 132 p.p.m. The U3O8 concentrations in the barren solution were better than 2 p.p.m. some 85 per cent of the time, and better than I p.p.m.73 per cent of the time. Investigations are underway to institute an automatic control system that will result in the U3O8 values on the resin and in the barren solution being maintained at or near the target values in spite of changes in the concentration of uranium in the feed solution.

The presentation of this talk, illustrated by sketches, proved very interesting and entertaining and was received with applause from all present. Mr I. Thomas proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Freer on behalf of all members of the O.F.S. Branch. The Conference Minerals & Materials '96 was held in Somerset West, South Africa, from 31st July to 2nd August, 1996. It was organized by the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, the Cape Technikon, and the Western Cape Branch of The South African institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The three-day Conference was attended by 180 delegates, representing countries such as Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The programme and associated exhibition were well organized, and each of the delegates received two volumes of proceedings containing the 77 papers presented at the Conference.

Probability-based empirical methods were employed as an alternative approach to predicting uncertainties associated with rock mass properties. The focus was on developing probabilistic spreadsheets to forecast rock mass classification indexes. Histograms were constructed to describe the best distribution in predicting rock mass properties. The developed models also offer utility in predicting the impact of discontinuities within the rock mass on rock strength and rock mass classification systems. Statistical analyses identified volumetric joint count, joint spacing, joint frequency, and rock strength as the most influential parameters. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed varying degrees of correlation among different rock mass properties. While some properties demonstrated significant correlations suitable for modelling, others did not align well with any correlation model. The results highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to rock mass characterization, considering multiple factors beyond volumetric joint count. Geological complexities, including tectonic activity and weathering processes, may obscure direct correlations. These results emphasize the importance of empirical modelling and detailed site investigations for accurate assessment of rock mass quality and stability in the Himalaya.

The output of palladium in the U.S.S.R. greatly exceeds the internal usage. The primary purpose of this 200 page volume is therefore to record details of fundamental researches on the properties of this metal with a view to expanding its marketability. Theoretical studies have revealed a number of alloys with great promise in electrical instruments and for the chemical industry. The success of these researches in the U.S.S.R. and in the U.S.A., resulted in the industrial usage of palladium exceeding that of platinum in 1957 and increasing its lead during the next decade. This volume is divided into three parts. Section I covers the mineralogy, extraction and the physical metallurgy of the metal. It records a considerable area where the resistance to corrosion of palladium equals that of platinum. Section II deals with the preparation and the properties of palladium in alloys and contains a comprehensive metallographic treatment of the many binary alloy systems. Section III is devoted to industrial applications. The 460 references which are quoted are mainly from the U.S.S.R. but otherwise have a world-wide coverage. H.B.
