Practical mining aspects should be considered when conducting pillar designs for bord-and-pillar layouts. The current methodology for pillar design will result in increasing pillar sizes with depth. This affects the extraction ratio and will result in onerous ventilation requirements when cutting large pillars. A holistic approach, including all mining engineering requirements, is required to ensure that the rock engineering designs are optimized to ensure efficient mining operations and sustainable production. Bord widths should not only be a function of the rock mass ratings, but should also be selected to fit the specifications of the mechanized equipment. The use of a ‘squat pillar’ formula for hard rock is discussed in the paper and the formula based on the exponents of the Hedley and Grant pillar formula, is explored. The effect of abutments and geological losses on average pillar stress is also explored. These factors must be considered when designing layouts at increasing depths.

Tapping a blast furnace is necessary not only to deliver the product, but is also essential for the safety of the furnace and workers in the cast-house. This paper will highlight the practices at ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces in the Vanderbijlpark Works, with specific focus on tap-hole design and monitoring as well as casting practice. Extension of the tap-hole life and hearth campaign will be illustrated with reference to the methods of maintenance of the tap-holes, troughs, runners, and cast-house equipment. The importance of proper cooling, good thermocouple installation, and temperature monitoring will be explained.

(Visitor) The water supply in South African mines is not as good as most mining engineers would like to believe, nor is sufficient care taken to ensure the safe dispensing, transportation, and consumption of water. As long as cases of dysentery and typhoid continue to occur in large numbers, it can be assumed only that the water supplies are not safe, or that the water-dispensing methods are poor. A dual water supply is a real health hazard. The ideal water supply is a single safe source for human consumption and industrial use.

Compañia Minera Antamina, Peru has recently completed a fifth year of operation of their 301-km concentrate pipeline. The pipeline was commissioned by PSI in May of 2001. The Antamina pipeline is generally accepted as one of the most complex slurry pipeline operations worldwide. The pipeline transports an average of 1.6 million tonnes of copper and zinc concentrates from the Yanacancha mine site at an elevation of 4 155 metres above sea level (masl) to the port of Huarmey at an elevation of 62 masl. Currently ten different types of concentrates are being transported as separate batches. The pipeline traverses oneof the most rugged areas in the world. It utilizes three different pipe diameters, and four remote valve stations to optimize the hydraulic design. PSI has recently completed an overall operational audi tof the Antamina pipeline. This paper evaluates the operational effectiveness of specific design features and operating philosophies, implemented during the engineering phase, over the last five years of operation.

Strict implementation of International Standards for representative sampling of coal is difficult for routine monitoring, due to time, technical, and economic constraints. A large percentage of the total sampling variance arises from errors accumulated during the earliest stages of sample collection. Modified procedures on the precision of the final result leads to controversies between the sellers and customers for coal. Manual collection of coal samples violates the principle of correct sampling, that all fragments must have an equiprobable chance of being in the sample. In addition, manual size reduction of large numbers of samples is time consuming and involves human errors. A coal quality management procedure in alignment with the relevant ISO standards that describes the sampling protocol has been implemented, and current sampling and laboratory analysis of coal from base load mines (mines situated at the mouth of the power station) are well established. For import coal, sampling is performed during unloading by auto-mechanical sampling (AMS). Due to logistical and safety issues associated with multiple suppliers, Eskom opted for the coal to be sampled at source on a pre-certification basis. Online analysers provide a fast, accurate, real-time method of determining the total moisture and elemental composition of coal and is important to the coal industry for pricing, quality control, and reduction of SO2 emissions. Elemental analyses include S, Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ti, K and Cl. Measurement of S is dictated by the control of SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. Elements such as Na and Cl have adverse effects on boilers, causing fouling and slagging. Available online elemental analyser technologies include prompt gamma neutron activation analyses (PGNAA), recommended for major element determination, and pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis(PFTNA), that is capable of measuring the major and minor chemical elements contained in coal. These systems utilize nuclear reactions to produce characteristic gamma rays that are used for identifying various chemical elements. By acquiring the gamma rays in three different time windows, there is a significant reduction of the background as compared with the spectra taken with a radio isotopic source.

Minera La Parreña, S.A. de C.V., Milpillas operation is an underground mine designed to process 8 352 tons of ore per day for the recovery of copper through crushing, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities. In order to optimize copper recovery during leaching, the ore is crushed to 13 mm and subjected to primary sampling every 15 minutes for metallurgical accounting. At the same particle size, primary sample goes to secondary sampling and then, the secondary sample is crushed to 2 mm before tertiary sampling. The tertiary sample is sent to laboratory where a final sample is obtained and pulverized to 106 microns for copper assay. This paper shows a review of sampling strategy focused on minimizing or eliminating sampling errors and an experiment designed to determine copper head grade profile as well as the best sampling frequency.

As part of its programme to develop methods for concentrating minerals underground, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in conjunction with Lurgi evolved and tested a I MW centrifugal mill. The machine is capable, in the autogenous mode, of grinding more than 25 t/h of minus 75 plus 44 mm hard quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 50 per cent minus 75 µm material, and as a ball mill of grinding more than 60 t/h of minus 19 mm quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 35 per cent minus 75 µm material. Extrapolation of computer models of the process suggests that these limits can be comfortably exceeded. Long-term continuous testing is in hand, aimed at proving that this I m in diameter by I m long mill is in every respect the equivalent of a conventional 4 m by 6 m ball mill.

Owing to the high ore grades in the African Copperbelt and variable acid consumption, agitated leaching is common practice and is used more widely in Africa than in other regions. Two common challenges for agitated leach–solvent extraction circuits are higher presence of colloidal silica in the pregnant leach solution and elevated levels of total suspended solids. Both can negatively affect the physical and metallurgical performance of the solvent-extraction circuit, and lead to higher processing costs or reduced copper production. Operating in organic continuity is preferred to address such challenges, but is not always possible: additional treatment options may be advantageous. For this reason, Solvay recently introduced ACORGA® CR60LT, a new chemical additive to address these concerns. Continuous addition to the pregnant leach solution improves physical performance without negatively affecting Cu transfer or cathode quality. Results and benefits from commercial utilization of ACORGA® CR60LT at different operations in the Copperbelt are reviewed

"The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques and controlled bulk leaching studies. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a sevenelectron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions, which suggests that the sulphur is oxidized to thiosulphate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+ in these systems. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O3 2- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, supporting formation of different sulphur species as proposed for the sulphate and carbonate salts. Scanning electron microscopy and energydispersive spectroscopic analysis of the mineral surface after leaching indicate presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper in the sulphate system, an iron-rich surface layer in the perchlorate solutions, and absence of surface layer build-up in carbonate solutions. XRD analysis of a bulk leach residue from leaching in ammoniaammonium sulphate solutions showed the surface layer to be mostly amorphous (90%). The crystalline content (10%) is composed of 95% polymorphs of anhydrous iron oxide hydroxide FeO(OH). Choice of ammonium salt and the hydrodynamic environment of leaching have been shown to influence the presence or absence of the surface product, as well as its nature. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different routes for hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be followed. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilization of copper (I) and copper(II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation [1] (Beckstead and Miller., 1977a):"

Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of eighteen and the standing committees held forty-six meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of income over expenditure of R5 051 compared with an excess of expenditure over income last year of R4 608. This major reversal of fortunes is due in the first instance, of course, to the increased subscriptions. There were, however, other important contributors, particularly sales of the Proceedings of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and profits on the operation of symposia and colloquia. It would appear from a study of the accounts that there has been a substantial drop in expenditure on secretarial fees. In actual fact, however, our total expenditure on secretarial fees was higher. A portion of this expenditure was charged against the administration of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and, in addition, the charge against the Journal accounts for secretarial fees was increased. It will be recalled that in last year's annual report it was mentioned that subsequent to the new arrangement for publication of the Journal, the expected improvement in the finances of the Journal had been slow in materialising. After a total period of 18 months there was still no sign of improvement and it was accordingly decided to end the arrangement. As a result, the drain on the finances of the Institute was considerably lessened in the second half of the year. During the course of the year Council became concerned about the rapid depletion of our accumulated funds and gave careful and detailed attention to all aspects of the Institute's financial affairs. Particular attention was given to: 1. The fact that the Institute does not have a solid financial backing and must appeal for funds every time any special event such as a symposium is held. 2. The responsibilities of the Institute to the profession and the community, with particular reference to the desirability of establishing Institute bursaries and participating in other educational activities. 3. The rapidly rising cost of living. 4. The immediate financial position of the Institute. 5. The rapidly increasing cost of publishing the Journal due to the increasing number of papers available. In the meantime the immediate financial position of the Institute has improved but as this is due largely to non-recurring or irregular items of revenue, it should not be given undue weight. After careful consideration it was decided that an appeal should be made to industry for financial assistance, which would be used to cover the cost of symposia and other unusual expenditure and also, if possible, to build up the capital resources of the Institute so that there is a solid foundation for the future. Before appealing to industry, Council wished to be quite certain that there could be no criticism of the Institute for not having done our best in a personal capacity. Furthermore, Council examined many comparative statistics, including those circulated to members, which showed that, while expenditure per member has risen at an average annual rate of 7,5% over the last fifteen years, subscription revenue per member has risen at only 3,4% per annum. It was with this background that your Council decided to raise the subscriptions. Initial approaches have been made to the big mining groups and there has been a very generous response, although the details of how financial assistance will be provided have not yet been worked out. It seems likely that some form of affiliated company membership will be the most suitable method of achieving this. When these details have been fixed, it is the intention to extend the appeal to all corners of the mining industry as well as manufacturing and metallurgical industries. It is believed that these measures will ensure that the finances of the Institute are placed on a firm foundation on which the expanding activities can be planned. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R73 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 411. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year fron R6 540 to R9 160. The market value is now almost exactly the same as the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to R23 010 compared with R17 959 a year ago.

Variation in air temperature in a cross-section of an underground airway by K. R. VOST, B.Sc. (Glas.), M.Sc. (N.S.W.) (Visitor) Measurements of air temperatures in underground airways are normally made at only one point in a cross-section, and the air tem peratures at other points in the cross-section are assumed not to differ significantly from this. This paper discusses measurements made at a number of points in fifty crosssections in airways with different air velocities and wetness of floor. These measurements show that significant variations of air temperature can occur in a given cross-section at a given time. The effects of such variations on the accuracy of measurement of rises in air temperature as air passes along an airway are discussed. The importance of considering experimental error in the measured rises in air temperature when attempting to validate theoretical and empirical methods of predicting such rises is also discussed.

Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag. Tasked with developing a flow sheet for a new resource, one typically turns the experts for help. The advice of an expert can be invaluable in reducing the time and costs associated with characterizing an ore (not to mention extracting maximum information from limited samples). While guiding and optimizing a metallurgical concept study requires a certain skill set, selling a project is something different. The metallurgical specialist is usually not responsible for sharing the results of investigations with potential investors. However, the person responsible for selling the project can ensure that a metallurgical concept study is conducted thoroughly and responsibly without having the ability to do the work, while being sufficiently familiar with the metallurgical aspects to authoritatively sell the project. The process of identifying suitable process routes through to constructing a concept flow sheet and mass balance is discussed as a basic example. From basic mineralogical information and a thorough literature survey, the most likely beneficiation routes can be identified and targeted testing conducted. The final top size will depend on the required product properties (mainly grade), the selected beneficiation technology, and the ore?s liberation properties. Once the required top size has been identified, comminution options can be evaluated. Once again, literature surveys can be used to supplement concept-level comminution property information, and select possible equipment and circuit configurations. Marketing, material handling, and logistics-related information can be used to determine required dewatering technologies. At this stage, enough information is available to develop a concept mass balance and conduct basic equipment sizing..

Flotation is a mineral separation technology that uses the surface hydrophobic difference of valuable minerals and their associated gangue minerals to separate them. The flotation collector adsorbs on the valuable mineral surface to improve its hydrophobicity, and metal ions are usually used as activators to enhance the collector adsorption. Different mineral surfaces show different charging properties and adsorption behaviours with the collector or metal ions. Moreover, the order of adding metal ions and the collector also show significant and different flotation performance for the same mineral. The adsorption or flotation behaviour or both are governed by mineral surface chemistry, such as surface charging and reactivity. In our recent studies, force measurement using atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to study the surface charging and adsorption mechanism of metal ions and collectors. By preparing collector-functionalised AFM tips, AFM can directly measure the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface to determine the anisotropy of mineral surface reactivity. The preparation of collector-functionalised AFM tips provides the foundation for further study of the activation role of metal ion in the collector adsorption. The application of AFM for force measurement in the surface chemistry of mineral flotation can provide important information on developing flotation reagents and lays the foundation for the specific regulation of mineral surface characteristics. Production caving started for Lift 2 at Northparkes in August 2004. In a period of less than 3 months, more than 10 000 seismic events were recorded. Events up to local magnitude +2.9 were induced near the mine during caving, with event rates of up to 500 per day. This paper documents the seismicity related to cave initiation and cave propagation during the initial production of Lift 2. The seismogenic zone of events initially moved at a rate of about 0.5 metres per day, accelerating to 2 to 3 metres per day after a few months of cave production. Seismic data analysis infers that the crown pillar between Lift 1 and Lift 2 was destressed over a vertical height of about 100 metres. As the seismogenic zone approached the crown pillar, a macroseismic episode occurred, with more than 20 events of at least local magnitude +1 occurring in a two-week period. Based on the seismicity recorded for Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines, a caving mechanics model is proposed. Comments and suggestions are made for seismic data analysis and design of seismic monitoring systems in block caving mines.

In the 21st century, dynamic, accurate digital 3-D geological models are essential to the pursuit of safe, efficient and profitable mining. This is particularly true for the deep-level underground mines in South Africa. The Sirovision® solution is a collaboration project between the Australian CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Datamine Software Ltd. and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (AGA). The purpose of the project is to provide a fully integrated digital rock face imaging, geological mapping and modelling system for the AGA gold mining operations. The CSIRO-developed Sirovision® Stereo Camera Rig (SCR) consists of two digital cameras, alighting system, a laser guidance system and image processing software. The imaging system works on the principles of photogrammetry, i.e. overlaying of two 2-D images with a central focus point, with mathematical algorithms extracting 3-D information from the 2-D image pair. The output from matching several image pairs is a computer-generated, full 3-D, virtual copy of the mining excavation. The image resolution and relief ares of sufficient quality to distinguish different rock types and structural contacts. Functionality within Datamine Studio3 is used to add geological intelligence to the 3-D images provided by Sirovision®. The geologist identifies and ?draws? lines representing geological features directly onto the image. By utilizing the inherent ?topography? of the 3-D image, the software is able to convert the lines into 3-D surfaces, ready for use in the 3-D geological model. Subsequent to promising underground test results from AGA?s Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) in Australia and other mining operations worldwide, it was decided to test the Sirovision® system in the South African deep-level gold mines. The first underground tests at Moab Khotsong Mine began in January 2009. The objectives of these tests entailed the capturing of 3-D images of selected development ends, mapping of geological features onto the 3-D images and integration of the mapping data with the 3-D geological model. Some downsides have cropped up during the feasibility testing, related to practicality of the SCR for acquisition of 3-Dimagery in the deep-level underground operating environment. These constraints will have to be addressed prior to operational implementation. Facing such difficulties is not unusual when attempting to implement new technology in such a challenging working environment and testwork is still in progress at the mine in order to prove the concept of using this technology in a Witwatersrand underground gold mine. The great advantage of the Sirovision® solution is that it offers the geologist the opportunity to work remotely on a 3-D virtual copy of a mining excavation, without the heat, humidity, hazards and time constraints associated with physical mapping in an underground workplace.

Held on the 22nd March 1972 at Kelvin House. Four papers were presented at this colloquium, which was attended by approximately 120 people. The first paper, 'Flotation Research Work at the N.I.M. research group, University of Natal on the modelling of a Flotation Process' was presented by Dr R. P. King, the leader of the N.I.M. Research Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Natal. A discussion panel, under the chairmanship of Dr R. E. Robinson with Mr M. Dawson (PMC), Mr E. Roux (FOSKOR), and Dr B. K. Loveday (NIM), discussed the potential application of the theoretical work on flotation modelling to industrial processes, and alternative approaches to providing a way of control of flotation plants. The second paper, 'Fundamental Studies of the Flotation Process the Work of the National Institute) for Metallurgy', was presented by Dr N. P. Finkelstein. The discussion panel for this paper was under the chairmanship of Professor D. D. Howat,and had as its members Mr H. P. Carlisle (JCI), Professor D. le Roux (University of Pretoria), and Mr E. Rudolph (Anglo American Research Laboratories). A lively discussion on this paper ensued, with several contributions from the floor. After lunch, Mr S. K. de Kok, Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, Anglo Vaal, presented a paper on 'The Flotation of Copper and Zinc Sulphide from Prieska Ore'. The paper was discussed by a panel comprising Dr V. C. Lovell (NIM), Mr A. Gilbert (General Mining), and Dr D. Legge (Anglo Vaal), under the chairmanship of Dr L. Bushell. This discussion, in which many members of the audience participated, revolved around the difficulties associated with the production of copper and zinc concentrates and the lack of fundamental information on the behaviour of copper and zinc sulphides in flotation. The final presentati0n was a paper, 'The Recovery by Flotation of Cassiterite contained in Gravity Concentration Plant Tailings', presented by Mr E. B. Viljoen (Metallurgy Department, Goldfields South Africa Limited). The discussion, led by a panel consisting of Mr O. Tant (Goldfields Laboratories), Mr J. Levin (NIM), and Mr R. I. Shanks (NIM), under the chairmanship of Mr H. Cross (Goldfields South Africa Limited) referred particularly to the use of new reagents for the flotation of tin, with particular emphasis on the fundamental relationship between reagent composition and its ability to float this type of mineral.
