From its early beginnings, shortly after the Witwatersrand gold rush of 1886, Randfontein Estates was planned as a heavyweight operation. The venture was capitalized by J .B. Robinson to the tune of £2 million at time when syndicates were loath to invest £50000 in ventures in and around the new metropolis, Johannesburg, which had sprung up midway along the Witwatersrand. But by then Robinson was a colossus among his contemporaries. Operating as a loner as he had done on the Kimberley diamond fields, where he created his own individual fortune and commanded the sort of respect which, early in his career, led to his election as Mayor of Kimberley. When news of a third gold discovery in the Transvaal (the first two had been in the Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton areas) reached Kimberley, Robinson's pioneering spirit was further stired and he hastened to the new goldfield to stake his claims before his business adversaries- Rhodes, John X. Meriman, Hans Sauer, and Caldecot-could entrench themselves. Once the new Witwatersrand goldfields had been proclaimed, claimpegging started in earnest. But the question was: where to start? Diamond men al, not one of the financiers had any knowledge of the geology of the gold-bearing formations.

"Zircon is a naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) and as such is subject to a variety of regulations around the world. The regulatory processes and their implementation are summarized and the key issues affecting zircon and zirconia highlighted. Having absorbed the activities of the former Zircon Minerals Committee, the strategy of the Zircon Industry Association (ZIA) is to be the ‘go-to place’ for information on these matters, and its activities in the NORM space are described. Chemical industry regulations such as REACH are spreading around the world, and the paper provides an update of their status in the key jurisdictions. As mineral sands are transported to market in oceangoing vessels, they are subject to the regulations of the International Maritime Organization, which are summarized in the paper. IntroductionFrom a global perspective, zircon is generally not found in high concentrations other than in placer and dune deposits where it has been deposited along with other heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, and monazite. Such deposits have been sorted and concentrated over geological time by the action of tides, waves, and wind to form concentrated deposits of heavy minerals along old coastlines and in river beds and deltas. Consequently, zircon is mostly found in association with the principal titanium minerals ilmenite and rutile. These secondary concentrations in placer deposits provide the commercial sources of zircon.All geological materials contain natural radioactivity, although the term NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material) is mostly used for minerals and other materials with above-average uranium and thorium concentrations. Importantly, the radioactive nature of zircon has not changed, but the way in which radioactivity is viewed by regulators has, affecting the zircon industry throughout the value chain."

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Mining Technology Division of the CSIR have co-operated to define the problems associated with deep level mining and in this paper they will identify what they consider to be the critical areas requiring technological solutions. This perspective will then be applied to work currently being carried out by both the organizations and gaps for additional developments will be identified. Finally the Co-operative Research Centre methodology operating in Australia is described. The purpose of this CRC is to provide a vehicle for R&D co-operation to develop and implement technologies which will increase the competitiveness of the mining industry. A further objective is to develop an appropriately skilled human resource base.

Design criteria and recent developments in large-capacity Wemco flotation cells by P. KIND, Ph.D. (Clausthal), B.Sc. (Visitor) The scaling-up of the large flotation cells that have been developed during the past few years has been based on hydrodynamic considerations and has resulted in a 500 ft3 cell unit. Plant results on a porphyry copper ore show that the 500 ft3 unit is equivalent to the previously used 300 ft3 model.. . Plant tests on the use of 300 ft3 flotation cells for the recovery of phosphate, particularly from the coarse size fractions, are also described.

The excavation damage zone (EDZ) caused by drill and blast excavation consists of intense damage adjacent to the remaining half barrel of the blast hole, new fracturing induced by the blast and reactivation of pre-existing fractures. The properties of intense microfracturing adjacent to the half barrels of remaining blast holes are based on study of rock samples from ZEDEX-tunnel and it’s extension at Äspö and the Research tunnel at Olkiluoto in Finland. The new and reactivated fracturing is based on results of mapping of slots cut in the rock in ZEDEX-project. The zone of increased porosity adjacent to half barrels, which penetrates to a depth of some centimeters was studied by using novel 14C-PMMA method. The penetration of the radial fractures, which is an order of magnitude deeper, was studied by mapping using color penetrant. Results of EDZ studies carried out at Äspö HRL in Sweden and in Research Tunnel at Olkiluoto show that the properties of EDZ can be affected significantly by engineering design. The result imply that the additional pore volume caused by distinct fracturing around the blast holes caused by state-of-the-art smooth blasting technique could be of the same order as that of the damaged zone adjacent to the surface of the half barrels. Die Eigenschaften einer immensen, an die Halbrohre der Restbohrlöcher angrenzenden Mikrorissbildung beruhen auf einer Studie über die aus dem ZEDEX-Tunnel gewonnenen Gesteinsproben und deren Fortsetzung im Untertage-Labor Äspö (Hard Rock Laboratory, HRL) in Schweden und im Forschungstunnel bei Olkiluoto in Finnland. Die neue und reaktivierte Rissbildung basiert auf den Auswertungsergebnissen der Schlitze, die bei dem ZEDEX-Projekt ins Gestein geschnitten wurden. Die Zone der vermehrten, an die Halbrohre angrenzenden Porösität, die in ein paar Zentimeter Tiefe eindringt, wurde anhand der neuen 14C-PMMA-Methode untersucht. SYNOPSIS Planning for the Finsch opencast mine is described with particular reference to the proposed stages of mining, the method used to determine the limits of surface waste rock stripping and the derivation of the waste rock mining rate. Actual mining practice is described and the possibility of installing a skipway into the open mine at a later date is discussed. In addition, the waste dumping policy is referred to: this includes the cutting of slots through the hill on the west side of the pipe to increase tramming speeds. The crushing, washing and recovery sections of the treatment plant are described together with the various changes being made to the circuit. The most important of these are the installation of X-ray sorters for the final recovery of + 7 mesh diamonds, and the vibrating grease belt for the recovery of - 7 mesh diamonds. INTRODUCTION The Finsch Mine, a subsidiary of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Limited, is situated approximately 90 miles west of Kimberley, and some two miles from the village of Lime Acres, in the Northern Cape. Lime Acres is a company village shared with the Northern Lime Company which operates a limestone quarry and works near the township. The mine is near the southern end of a well mineralized belt producing limestone, asbestos, diamonds, manganese and iron ore, and the whole area has developed rapidly in the last 20 years. Power for mining operations is drawn from the Electricity Supply Commission. The mine is conveniently close to the main Kimberley-Postmasburg railway line. Water is drawn from the Vaal River through a 57 mile State-owned pipeline at present temporarily operated by mine staff. DISCOVERY AND PROSPECTING OPERATIONS The diamondiferous orebody is situated on the farm Brits, which is State-owned ground that has been leased to the Company for the period of mining operations. There are indications of interest in the area by prospectors (Richter, de Bruin and others) over a period of some 30 years and the discovery would possibly have been made years earlier but for a law preventing prospecting for precious stones on State-owned land. Although the pipe formed a clear depression on the hill where it was situated, it was overlain by some 5 to 40 ft of banded ironstone rubble which was washed into the depression from the hillside above the pipe and obscured the deposit. In 1958, Mr Allister Thornton Fincham applied for, and was granted, the right to prospect for base minerals on the farm Brits. Asbestos is known to occur in the area and, initially, was Mr Fincham's primary interest. However, during the prospecting operations, garnets were discovered and it was realised that diamonds might be present. In 1960, when the Precious Stones Amendment Act was passed, a company

By use of a finite-difference model of an experimental galvanic cell, the effect of a resistance in the metalic conduction path on the potential and current distributions in the cell was predicted. The model predictions were compared with experimental measurements of potential profiles (measured by use of a scanning reference electrode) and galvanic currents. The predictions agreed well with the experimental measurements. Apart from this model, which is applicable in macroscopic cells (Le. with an electrolyte of low conductivity), a calculation procedure was developed to predict the effect of an external resistance on the galvanic current in a microscopic cell (high conductivity). The responses of the galvanic currents in the microscopic and macroscopic cells to changes in the external resistance were compared. From the similarity of the responses, a simple practical procedure for the evaluation of the external resistance (meter resistance) that can be tolerated is proposed.

There are many potential uses in gold mining for an initially stiff element of backfill that will yield at a predetermined load and maintain that load to beyond a compression of 30%. Such elements could be used as yielding rib pillars, as replacements for more conventional supporting packs, as con- fining bulkheads for mass backfill, as supports to provide lateral constraint, and load-carrying augmentation to overloaded rock pillars. The paper describes a system of reinforced cemented backfill that can be used to provide the above requirements. The necessary characteristics of the reinforcing and the cemented tailings are described together with the method of design to obtain a predetermined stiffness and yield load. The load-compression characteristics of the reinforced tailings elements are described and the effect of changing various of the design parameters is demonstrated.

In view of an urgent need for a simple means of simulating the behaviour of stratified rock masses, a long-dormant linear model is revived, generalized, and discussed in some depth. The model is piecewise homogeneous, consisting of a pile of homogeneous isotropic laminae in which the interfaces between beds are parallel and free of shear stresses and cohesion. The continuity of stresses and normal displacements is assured across the bedding planes and, to maintain simplicity, the theory of thin plates is used as the kernel of the model. The paper covers the case where the rock mass consists of discrete beds in which the layers are arranged either heterogeneously or systematically. The stratification is regarded as uniform when all the layers are of the same thickness and their Young's modulus changes exponentially with depth; and as homogeneous when all the laminae have identical thickness and properties. The case of uniform stratification is also treated on the basis of an equivalent quasi-continuum derived from the basic model. Attention is focused on the derivation of influence functions. It is demonstrated that the quasi-continuous models, when they are available, can replace their distinct-layer counterparts. The homogeneous quasi-continuum, which permits the derivation of its influence functions in closed form, facilitates the determination of the roof and floor convergence. In the case of a significant class of problems, the convergence distribution is defined by a second-order differential equation in the xy plane, which simplifies to a Poisson's equation if the mining excavations are unsupported. With this result, the paper prepares for the solution of a host of practical problems. These solutions are presented in a series of papers that are in the course of publication.

The complexity of modem open pit load-haul-dump systems is described, and the need for realistic working models is pointed out. Both standard and probabilistic simulation procedures are discussed, probabilistic simulation being indicated as the more powerful and practical technique. Acquisition of the necessary pit operating data required for simulator construction and general modelling procedures are described. Finally, results from a typical open pit simulator are used to indicate the scope of the technique.

A retrospective study was conducted on the Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) compensation claims from 1998 to 2008 to determine if the 2008 milestone agreed at the 2003 Mine Health and Safety Summit was achieved. The number and costs of NIHL compensation claims in different commodity sectors and workplaces were collated. A secondary analysis of the ages of employees compensated after 2008 was conducted. A complementary retrospective analysis of audiogram data investigated the percentage loss of hearing (PLH) shift in different homogeneously exposed groups and occupations at two gold mines. The compensation claims analysis indicated a significant decrease in NIHL claims from 1998 to 2008, but the milestone was not achieved. The reason may be either that claims have not been submitted timeously as required by Instruction 171 and that the current submissions are a result of pre-2003 noise exposure, or that employees who were baselined are still developing NIHL owing to ineffective hearing conservation programmes in place in the mining industry. On the basis of best practice for hearing conservation, recommendations are made for leading indicators in hearing conservation programmes and for reducing the risks of NIHL in order to achieve the 2013 milestone.

There is often a need to increase capacity through existing mist eliminator installations without significant tower modifications. Often there is not enough extra space outside existing vessels unless more expensive changes can be justified. Also, plant downtime must be considered. The challenge in retrofitting is to overcome velocity limitations inherent in the design while at the same time extend performance capability. The solution most often is to create new ways to add extra filter area while remaining constrained to the existing space. This strategy, however, can dangerously backfire if basic design principles are not followed. Mist eliminator design is a complex integration of many conflicting performance parameters. Often the objective is to increase scrubbing capacity while maximizing collection efficiency and service life and minimizing operating pressure drop (energy cost), particle regeneration (re-entrainment) and overall maintenance costs. Results of plant retrofitting using mesh pads, impaction fibre beds and diffusion fibre beds are presented based on actual plant projects. Often the retrofit project can be more effective by increasing the scope and combining other new plant equipment with the upgrade such as new tower components. In some cases, the type of mist eliminators can be upgraded from impaction type (velocity dependent) to Brownian diffusion type (velocity independent) if additional downstream protection or reduced emissions are desirable, especially at turndown rates. Trade-offs between different fibre bed types and styles are discussed as they relate to performance and maintenance.

"The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. Backfilling is one of the options available to the mining engineer in mine design. The decision as to the type of backfill is dependent on the purpose for which it will be used. For example, in a situation where high-grade, steeply dipping multiple reefs are to be mined, the purpose would be the following: ? to facilitate maximum extraction; a ? to minimize loss of fines; ? to allow closely spaced multiple reefs to be mined; and a ? to create a working platform. The physical properties required which will satisfy the abovementioned requirements can then be defined; the design of the fill plant, as well as the transport of the fill, will be governed by these considerations. The same procedure is also adopted in deciding on backfill in single- reef gold mines. The first question to be asked is the purpose of the fill. It may be to reduce the energy release rate, for environmental reasons, to reduce timber usage, to improve productivity, to reduce stoping costs, to obtain higher mining extraction, and so on. Only after one, or a combination, of these factors has been selected, can the specifications for the fill be decided on, and the plant designed accordingly. The introduction of backfill at Sheba Gold Mine will be used to illustrate the procedure adopted by Anglovaal in determining the type of fill required.

The monitoring of rock slopes is a common procedure in the management of hazards associated with slope instability. Slope stability radar has become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art method for management of hazards associated with unstable slopes in open pit mines. This is confirmed by the rapid adoption of the technology since inception in mid 2003, with over 70 GroundProbe slope stability radars now in use at open pit operations throughout the World. The use of a monitoring system such as slope radar to identify slope hazards is only part of the solution to minimise the consequences associated with slope instability. The presence of the hazard must also be effectively communicated to the mine personnel, so that the correct response to the hazard can be enacted, and the risk mitigated to an acceptable level. In some surface mines, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass, hazards can develop rapidly; with slopes progressing from stability to ultimate collapse in just hours. In these situations, it is vital that efficient systems are developed to evacuate the area of the pit affected. Such a system has been developed by GroundProbe in South Africa, with the vital driving force for the project being provided by the Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena mine operation based at Mokopane. The mine based development of the system was perceived as an essential aspect in the development of the successful system. From an early stage, the mine provided essential input on both hardware and software developments to allow the system to be rapidly integrated into the mining operation. This paper describes the pit evacuation alarm system that was developed and discussed the benefits obtained from a mine based development program.

Hardmetals possess extremely high hardness and wear resistance, which render them ideal for applications such as metal-cutting tools, rock-drilling tools, and industrial wear-resistant parts like dies, punches, and seals. However, hardmetals are britle, and show poor resistance to impact and shock. They can therefore rarely be used unsupported, and it is common practice to attach hard metal working parts to a more resilient tool holder or support, which is normally made of steel. . . . Owing to the widely differing physical and mechanical properties of steels and hard metals, the Joining of one to the other is problematic, and the method used must be chosen with care. This paper reviews several methods available for the joining of hardmetal to steel, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Laboratory testing of the self-heating propensity of coal, using crossing-point temperature and differential thermal analysis techniques, involves the frequent recording of several temperatures. The volume of data and the desire for high accuracy of measurements motivates an automated recording system. The data which are recorded must be adjusted for calibration factors and the results presented in both graphical and tabular form. The paper describes hardware and software features of a computerised system which is being used to establish the relative propensity to self-heating of a wide variety of coals.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Es gibt eine Menge eingewurzelter Ideen im Gebiet der Mechanik von Felsklüften, die, nach den letzten experimentellen Arbeiten von mehreren Verfassern, eine tiefe Überprüfung benötigen. The Samarco pipeline, the longest in the world for iron ore slurry transportation, started operation in 1977 to transport concentrate from the Germano facilities, in the state of Minas Gerais, to the pelletizing plant, located 396 km away, in the state of Espirito Santo, on the south-east coast of Brazil. Designed for a nominal capacity of 12 million tons per year, the pipeline reached 15.5 million/year due to operational improvement and, in late 2005, it was resized to transport 16.5 million tons per year, with the installation of a booster station. In order to ensure the accurate performance of the system, a pipeline cleaning programme was carried out and, since it has been29 years from the operation start-up, precise knowledge of the pipe condition would be fundamental to guarantee the success of the project. The cleaning programme demonstrated the potential of operational gains from this initiative, and its effect on the corrosion control and future measures, which should be permanently adopted to maintain the improved capacity. The intelligent pig runs provided essential data used to establish a pipeline integrity programme that allowed Samarco to develop a pipe repair plan based on the severity and significance of the features and to implement a future pipe replacement plan.

Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.
