INTRODUCTION "When there is an economic need for cleaning fine coal to low ash, the technical difficulties will be solved. The utilization of fines below 28 mesh will determine the degree to which beneficiation will be carried. Whenever these "fines" will be processed into smokeless fuels or used as new materials for the chemical industry or for hydrogenation, a higher degree of cleaning will be economically justified”.(l) This quote from the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation correctly anticipates the use of fines as "smokeless" fuel or as a future component of boiler fuel and a1 so as a raw material for the chemical industry or possible new uses such as for internal combustion engines. Fines utilization depends upon an economic need and possibly neglects to say an environmental need or a government funded development program as the prime mover for development. In any event, this conference is faced with the "need" to beneficiate fine coal and undoubtedly among the processes that will be discussed are the unit processes of future coal preparation facilities. HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT It is interesting to look at where we have been, where we are now and where we possibly will be in the future. In order to put some limitations on this presentation, we will for the most part confine our remarks to this century and particularly developments since World War II. We also will limit our remarks to the preparation of bituminous coals in the United States, and for the most part, to wet processes. In the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation, clues to the processes being used to beneficiate coal are contained in the Chapter Titles. An extensive treatment of "Hand Picking" was contained in Chapter 8. Chapter 7 contained a description of methods for "Preparation at the Face". Chapter 18 dealt with "Slurries, Sludges, Slimes and Water Treatment" and defined this size of coal as being the size at which "Jigs and Chance Cones are usually dispensed with and other methods such as the hydrator, tables, and froth flotation are employed. Generally the limit is 1.7mm to 3.4mm. In the days before World War I1 the then modern bituminous coal preparation plant contained jigs or Chance Cones for the coarse material +6.35mm, concentrating tables, launders or some classifier type of coal washer for the fines (6.35 x 0.15mm), and froth flotation as the only method of cleaning minus 0.15mm coal which was used very sparingly.

This paper details the development of a functional work index that characterises the relationship between the energy that is imparted by a Roller Press into materials, against the resultant size reduction achieved. Such a Roller Press work index is necessary for this new grinding technology to differentiate it from Bond's grinding work index, and to clear up confusion that arises with such a comparison to Bond. The energy usage in a Roller Press does not follow Bond's "Third Theory of Comminution" but rather Rittinger's theory of new surface creation. The relationships for such a work index have been developed from the viewpoint of an equipment manufacturer with the hope that they will be of assistance to the minerals industry in the design of grinding circuits incorporating Roller Press comminution. The work index contains modification factors that reflects the effect of oversize, fines, moisture. closed-circuit operation and roll surface characteristics on the energy verses size reduction relationship. It has evolved from the results obtained from testing of a wide range of ore and mineral types that include bauxite, coal, kimberlite, limestone, iron and chrome ores, base metal and gold ores. The results show that even for such a diverse range of materials, they all demonstrate similarities of behaviour when comminuted in a Roller Press.

Existing process technologies for the production of soda ash from trona involves dissolution in hot brine, sedimentation and filtration for the removal of impurities, and subsequent crystallization for the recovery of soda ash. In this regard, mining and operating costs, particularly energy costs, are higher than desired. A preferred processing strategy might be to remove gangue mineral contaminants from the plant feed prior to dissolution in hot brine. Such a preprocessing strategy at ambient temperature and pressure has been limited by the lack of satisfactory process technology. Now based on recent results from laboratory research at the University of Utah it seems that the run-of-mine trona ore can be treated at ambient temperature and pressure using a special flotation procedure to separate the gangue minerals and make a trona concentrate with a purity of almost 99% trona at a recovery of more than 97%. The concept of such a new processing strategy is discussed with respect to current plant practice.

Changes in the ore types available and increased environmental concern have created a demand for an alternative technology to cyanide for the extraction of gold from ore. Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (Great Lakes) believes that halogen chemistry, in particular bromine chemistry, is the best available alternative to cyanide for gold extraction. Great Lakes is a Fortune 500 chemical company with sales of approximately one billion dollars per year. Great Lakes extracts elemental bromine from naturally occurring brines in Southern Arkansas. Great Lakes has developed a family of proprietary bromine compounds to aid in the extraction of gold. In addition to proprietary bromine compounds for gold extraction, Great Lakes has developed a method of recycling bromide ion in the leach circuit. Various recovery methods, including ion exchange and solvent , extraction are currently being studied.

Process choice for a refractory gold ore can become a controversial issue, especially at the early stages of a project. This happens since at preliminary stages, a simple economic comparison among the main process options is not possible as the differences are usually smaller than the precision of estimates. This paper presents a methodology to assess the suitability of each available technologies using a heuristic approach, were technical, economic, operational and environmental aspects are taken into account using a neural network methodology. This methodology is embedded in an expert system for gold ore process design, Intelligold, which is in the final stages of development.

INTRODUCTION The mine hoisting equipment that is selected and installed at a mine is for the lifetime of the mine and, therefore, it is extremely important that a proper choice be made. Several types of mine hoist designs, including double drum hoists, single drum hoists, friction hoists, and various special designs of these, are available to¬day. Each has advantages and disadvantages and they should only be used in suitable applications. Drive systems for mine hoists must be evaluated together with the mechanical systems for each hoist application. It does not make sense to properly select the hoist mechanical system and then choose a drive system that turns out to be a bottleneck. MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available in the world today: the drum hoist, on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe) hoist, which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum Hoists Single Drum Hoist: A single drum hoist (shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1) can be used as a service or production hoist with the cage or skip in balance with a counterweight (Figs. 2 and 3). It can efficiently service one or more levels, since the location of the counterweight at any time is not important. As a pro¬duction hoist with skips in balance, the single drum hoist is best used for single level hoisting. All rope adjustments for proper spotting must be done manually for the single drum hoist. This has to be done periodi¬cally to compensate for rope stretch. A variation of the single drum hoist is the divided drum hoist. If multilayer winding is necessary, the single drum hoist must have a divider to allow a sep¬arate compartment for each rope. If a counterweight is used with a divided drum application, the counter¬ weight rope can be wound on a smaller diameter (Fig. 4). Consequently, it moves a lesser distance than the main conveyance and rope adjustment problems are re¬duced. Double Drum Hoist: A double drum hoist in oper¬ation is shown in Fig. 5. Double Drum Hoist With One Drum Clutched: As a service hoist with cage and counterweight, a double drum hoist with one drum clutched (Fig. 6) can serve several levels efficiently. The advantage of having the clutched drum is that it allows rapid adjustment of ropes due to initial stretch. Some users may prefer the single drum hoist with manual rope adjustment, while others consider the added expense of the second drum and clutch is justified to make rope adjustments quickly. The value of this feature for a particular application should be discussed with the hoist manufacturer. As a production hoist with skips in balance for a multi¬level operation, the clutch can be adjusted for efficient hoisting from any level. Double Drum Hoists with Both Drums Clutched: There are also double drum hoists that have both drums clutched (Fig. 7). The main advantage claimed for this type of hoist is that if something happens in one of the two compartments, the hoist can operate in the other compartment to raise and lower men and sup¬plies. This feature is particularly favorable if there is only one shaft entrance to the mine. Multiple Drum Hoist: The multiple drum hoist, a South African innovation, is a type of drum hoist about which everyone should be aware. Basically, it uses two hoist ropes per conveyance which at great depths per¬mits use of smaller ropes and smaller drums. There are none in use in the United States today. However, they should be considered in very deep mines. Friction (Koepe) Hoists This hoist (Fig. 8) was introduced to the mining world by Frederick Koepe in 1877. For the environmentally safe management of the sulphidic waste rock produced from the Stratoni mining facilities, TVX Hellas has examined, within the frame of the funded European research program ROLCOSMOS, the effectiveness of an alternative rehabilitation scheme involving the segregation of the sulphide rich components of waste rock and the engineered application of alkaline additives. The examined waste rock management scheme was evaluated with laboratory test work followed by pilot-scale field applications. In this paper, the results from the two-year monitoring period of the pilot scale application are presented.

Electric utility response to certain amendments of the Clean Air Act has resulted in a production of several types of alkaline coal combustion byproducts (CCB). Alkaline combustion byproducts are gaining increasing usage for acid mine drainage (AMD) mitigation as research leads to a better understanding of their beneficial applications. Since January 1997, Mettiki Coal has been injecting alkaline flue gas desulfurization material from Virginia Power's Mt. Storm Unit No. 3 wet limestone scrubber into abandoned portions of the active Mettiki Mine.

Contract 75-124-211 extends along the Chicago River from Roosevelt Road on the south to Ogden Avenue on the north. In addition a branch tunnel runs east from approximately mid-project ending near Lake Michigan. The contract was bid on December 14, 1977 with three joint-ventures submitting bids. Of these the joint venture of J.F. Shea Co., Inc. Walnut, California, (Sponsor), Peter Kiewit Sons' Co., Omaha, Nebraska and Shea Company and Associates, Walnut, California was low with a bid of $101,976,680.00. The MSD awarded the job to the Joint-Venture on January 5, 1978 with a scheduled completion date of January 23, 1983. The project consists of the following major items of work: (1.) A 25'-0" minimum diameter Construction Shaft, 220 feet deep (2.) 13,726 Linear Feet of 30'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (3.) 6,648 Linear Feet of 13'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (4.) Seventeen concrete lined Drop Shafts varying in finished diameter from 4'-0" to 12'-0", and each approximately 250 feet deep with chambers and connections to the tunnels varying from 100 to 1300 feet in length.

Considerable interest has been shown recently in organically modified silicates (ormosils) because of the wide range of possible applications for these interesting organic-inorganic hybrids. These applications include the use of the hybrids as modifiers of a range of host polymer proper- ties. The ormosils can be synthesised by the conventional hydrolytic sol-gel process, as well as by the non-hydrolytic sol-gel route. To date, however, there are relatively few reports of the synthesis of sub-micron size ormosil particles of well-defined spherical morphology. Here, we report work to date on synthesis of such nanoparticles and also introduce our own work in the area.

I. INTRODUCTION The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is a regional water and sewerage authority which provides wholesale water and sewer services to the Metropolitan Boston area. The MWRA was created by the Massachusetts Legislature as an independent authority in 1985 following the filing of a lawsuit in federal court to correct the pollution of Boston Harbor resulting from inadequate and inadequately maintained sewerage facilities. Immediately upon its creation, the MWRA began to tackle treatment plant issues, including addressing the need for a secondary treatment plant, planning for ceasing ocean discharging of sludge, and making interim repairs to the existing, antiquated treatment plants. The MWRA's initial activities led to a court-ordered schedule for construction of a single new primary and secondary treatment facility, for development of sludge management plan focussed principally on reuse, and for completion of a short term program of repairs to existing facilities. Once a schedule for completing these activities had been negotiated, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a plaintiff in the federal court case, asked that the MWRA take "responsibility" for controlling discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) within its service area. A laboratory technique is presented that uses the Knelson Concentrator and a relatively small sample to predict the amenability of a given gold ore to gravity recovery. The technique applies to develop­mental orebodies as well as retrofitting existing plants. Justification for this approach is discussed. Actual results of the technique applied to existing and prospective circuits are presented and discussed.

A study was conducted to assess the feaeibility of increasing the heap height above one lift at the Alligator Ridge Mine. This study concentrated on the physical aspects of the heap and liner performance. Two principle aspects were addressed during this investigation: (a) the adequacy of heap permeability under present and future loading conditions; and (b) the adequacy of the liner to limit seepage losses. Field and laboratory test a were performed and their details and results are presented. It was concluded that the permeability of the heap would remain adequate for higher heap. The geometry of the heap will be the major constraint. It was also concluded that the liner would perform satisfactorily beneath higher heap.

In 1994, Goldstrike initiated a research program to investigate processing options for treating what was then the small amount of carbonaceous ore identified in the reserves. The focus of the research was on developing a process which incorporated the autoclave technology already utilized at Goldstrike. Over the next two years, Barrick pursued the development of an ammonium thiosulfate leaching (ATS) process. During the period in which the ATS research was being conducted the amount of carbonaceous ore in Goldstrike's reserves increased substantially and continued growth was projected. By 1996, significant advancement was made on the development of the ATS process. The work culminated in a series of integrated pilot plant runs incorporating autoclaving, ATS leaching, resin in leach, stripping and cementation. Several questions about the process chemistry remained unanswered, preventing commercial development. Barrick was committed to producing gold from the carbonaceous ore reserves by 2000. A due diligence review of carbonaceous ore processing options was initiated during the second half of 1996. Processes considered in addition to ATS were fine grinding/autoclaving, as practiced then by Santa Fe, and whole ore roasting as practiced by Independence Mining and Newmont. The objective by year-end was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike's carbonaceous resources. In the fall of 1996, a detailed review of roasting as a processing alternative for Goldstrike was initiated. Throughout the ATS development period, whole ore roasting was used as the benchmark. All the ATS metallurgical and financial results were compared to roasting bench top test results. It was clear this data was too imprecise for use in due diligence study, a more definitive recovery value was needed to complete the carbonaceous ore review. The primary goal of the roasting review was to conduct pilot plant roast tests to gain a more thorough understanding of Goldstrike's carbonaceous ore's response to roasting and its effects on gold recovery. Using the test facility at Hazen Research, four pilot plant campaigns were conducted to determine optimum roast conditions and further define metallurgical design parameters. Conventional two-stage fluid bed technology based on Freeport­McMoRan's roasting patent was the specific process basis for testing. The ore's response to roasting exceeded expectations. In January 1997, a preliminary economic evaluation comparing ATS and roasting was presented, and the outcome was approval to proceed with a roasting prefeasibility study. In July 1997, approval for Goldstrike's Roaster facility was received and basic engineering started immediately thereafter. Detailed engineering _began in January 1998 and plant construction commenced in October 1998,t, Goldstrike's Roaster facility is designed to treat 12,000 tpd of a refractory gold ore, which contains both pyrite and organic carbon. Circuits in the facility include primary and secondary crushing, dry grinding, roasting, gas handling, neutralization, thickening and standard CIL. Gold desorbtion and recovery is carried out at Goldstrike's existing refinery. Plant start-up of the first dry grinding and roasting train is scheduled for March 2000, with the second train coming online in May 2000.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) was introduced to the mineral processing industries in the mid-SO's as a tool for comminuting raw and processed materials. This tool made its an impact in the Cement Industry where it was used as a pre-grinder on existing ball mills, raw and finish grinding in a mill circuit and other various applications. This concept was a big success where the cost of power was high along with the desire to increase capacity. The HPGR reduced the power requirement and increased the capacity in the ball mill due to the finished product produced by the HPGR and the micro fractures in the coarse rock, which reduces the power required to finish grind the rock. This unit has found acceptance in many other industries including diamonds, iron and other selective applications. The diamond industry uses this tool for selective grinding purposes since the kimberlite rock is considerably softer than the actual diamonds. Therefore within a bed of material, kimberlite is crushed to fines and the diamonds are liberated and unharmed. The iron industry primarily uses this tool for concentrate comminution; however, there are installations using this tool as a pebble crusher and in an AG-pebble mill circuit.

Air quantity is the primary parameter governing the working condition of a mine fan. In order to improve the fan performance and efficiency, reduce its energy consumption, and guarantee mine safety, it is very important to obtain an accurate value. However, generally speaking, the fan ducting or drift on surface is very short in distance and contains sharp bends. The air quantity of the mine is so concentrated in this way that the air velocity becomes very high, and the airflow, either in the fan drift before the fan impeller or at the downstream diffuser, is very turbulent. Therefore, no anemometer is satisfactory because there is too much difference between the measured value and the actual value of air quantity at the mine fan.

This paper examines methods for limiting occupational silica exposures for roof-bolting personnel in underground coal mining. A canopy air curtain and an air tube were evaluated as means to provide filtered air over the breathing zone of these personnel. Laboratory testing showed that dust reductions beneath the air curtain and air tube approached 60% and 40%, respectively, with low interference air velocities. The data also showed that dust reductions were highest for positions closest to the device and that these levels decreased with distance. This paper also evaluates a metal rake, a flexible insert and a rigid insert for cleaning the roof-bolter dust collector box. Less dust was produced when using the rigid insert. Surprisingly, the flexible insert was sometimes no better than scraping or raking the dust onto the mine floor. However, little dust got on the workers coveralls when using either of the inserts.

The majority of non-drive conveyor pulleys use rotating shafts, and typical idler rolls use non-rotating shafts, even though both products are used to support and guide the conveyor belt and its load. This paper will explore and compare the requirements for rotating and non-rotating shaft designs and the impact of that design on the product. Additionally, it will explore how the “roller” bearing types (deep groove ball, tapered, or spherical) affect these designs.
