A problem that has continued to plague the Florida phosphate industry is loss of coarse phosphate in the flotation circuit. Attempts to remedy this problem such as floating the coarse material (plus 425 µm) in a separate circuit have resulted in limited success, but recovery is still not optimum. A fundamental examination of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of the coarse phosphate has led to results that seem to supersede common paradigms. The Bureau of Mines investigated conditioning parameters such as fatty acid/fuel oil dosage, residual clay content in the feed, conditioning time, mixing intensity, and conditioner solids content. The study revealed that the effect of all these parameters was important. However, it was discovered that contrary to common beliefs, the conditioning time affected the grade of the rougher concentrate much more than the recovery. Specifically, the longer the conditioning time, the less quartz that was floated. It was also discovered that high mixing intensity conditioners could lower the conditioning time required for good grade. Many phosphate operators use low intensity drum type conditioners. Optimizing the conditioning time, mixing intensity, and other conditioning parameters resulted in a rougher concentrate grading 30 pct P.2O5, with an attendant recovery of 95 pct.

This paper presents the experimental results of an ongoing investigation into various properties related to the performance and durability of concretes made using existing and new cement replacements. The process of cement and concrete production is investigated focusing on product performance and environmental performance. The overriding factor for the progression of a material will be product performance however; each material selected will have many intrinsic environmental benefits. The study combines Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with each cement replacement candidate using the most common replacement percentages, 10, 20, 25, 30 and 50 percent. A 35N/mm2 concrete is then prepared and analysed in the fresh and hardened state. In addition, a chemical and physical analysis of each replacement material has been performed and results compared to the control samples containing OPC only and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a replacement. The results show that in their present form the replacements used in this research do not compare with the strengths achieved by the controls. The right balance of chemical composition and particle grading needs to be achieved to produce a realistic replacement material. The processes required to achieve this must strike a balance between monetary and environmental cost.

Service vehicles, often called support vehicles or auxiliary vehicles, are used in secondary functions to support production activities such as loading, drilling, and timbering. Probably the most common support vehicles are the personnel carriers used to move miners to and from work areas. Utility designs are used to transport supplies and various less mobile equipment. Specific application designs are used for special work such as explosives transportation and loading, equipment maintenance, and equipment lubrication. PERSONNEL CARRIERS Personnel carriers are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. Some are two-wheel drive, though most are four-wheel drive. Smaller versions carry at least two men and usually have sufficient capacity to carry a small payload of supplies or equip¬ment. The American Motor's 05 Jeep, equipped with an optional diesel engine, has been adapted successfully for this light duty. Larger personnel carriers with ca¬pacities of 12 to 20 or more men currently are available, as shown in Fig. 1. The designs often are customized to the operating characteristics of each mine. All meet the latest federal requirements for rollover protection, emergency brake systems, etc. UTILITY VEHICLES Utility vehicles are adaptable to numerous duties. Probably the most common are ordinary haulers with a flat bed or low-sided box. They are used for hauling supplies and equipment from one point to another. Some occasionally are used for towing and may pull one or more trailers. Fig. 2 shows a typical utility truck. SPECIAL-APPLICATION VEHICLES Special-application vehicles are possibly the most important of all support types since these vehicles di¬rectly support and maintain production equipment. Such vehicles are available in a wide variety of sizes, mechanical functions, and operating specifications. Most versions are four-wheel drive and articulated. Among the more common vehicles are explosive haulers and loaders, mechanic's trucks, lubrication trucks (Fig. 3), and special carriers. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS Development Utility haulers are essential in trackless operations to bring supplies to advancing headings. Some utility haulers may be dedicated to bringing in steel sets and may be equipped with boom lifts to unload heavy sup¬ports or even place them as required. A rockbolt hauler may have a boom-mounted operator's basket which can be used for bolt installation or inspection. Various mechanic's trucks and pipe trucks service the heading to keep power, air, water, and ventilation at the face and to keep face equipment at maximum utilization. Production Production operations require a variety of support equipment. Because of the larger crew size brought about by the addition of the production force, personnel carriers play a greater role. Correspondingly, steel¬support hauling equipment and bolting trucks usually see limited application. PRODUCTION UNITS Capacity Personnel carriers are available to carry almost any number of people desired. Likewise, other types of carriers or haulers can and are built to fit specific re¬quirements. Physical size, capacity, and operating char¬acteristics can be varied to fit any size of opening and operating condition. Generally, articulated models offer greater maneuverability than straight frame-axle steer designs. Most vehicles of this type are lower in power than production units, generally under 74.6 kW (100 hp). Operating performance still compares favorably to that of production equipment, i.e., the support vehicles can travel at equivalent speeds on the various mine gradients. Manpower Auxiliary vehicles should require only a single opera¬tor. Specific application vehicles may require more than one person. For example, ventilation trucks usually require a crew of two where pipe must be installed.

Efficient transport of bulk materials by belt conveyor systems is an important engineering design issue, especially as conveyors become longer and power requirements increase. It is well known within the industry that the parasitic energy loss of a belt conveyor, due to the indentation of the idlers into the belt backing material can be upwards of half the total energy required to drive it on a horizontal flight. Other loss sources includes the rolling resistance of the idlers, belt/roller misalignments, material trampling, frictional and acceleration losses on loading, etc., but energy absorbed by indentation of the belt backing as it passes over each successive idler is the dominant power consuming factor. INDENTATION LOSS MODELS Models to predict the rolling resistance of a cylinder (idler) on a viscoelastic foundation (backing material) have been available for some time. As a contact problem, it is nonlinear (contact length or indentation depth is a dependent on the load and vice versa) in load/deformation response. Rubber backing material is generally assumed to behave as a linear viscoelastic solid, even though it is known that most rubber compounds retain linearity only at very low strains. Because completely general solutions are impossible, practical solutions require simplifying assumptions. Those assumptions relate naturally to two separate pans of any analytical model: I. The deformation model-aspects of the problem relating to the geometry, boundary conditions and kinematics of how the material deforms. 2. The material model-aspects of the problem relating to the material properties, or constitutive relationships, i.e., the stress/strain relationships.

The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.

Introduction The usefulness of microscopes in exploration and ore dressing, problems has been documented for the older generation of mining industry personnel in such publications as Schneiderhohn and Ramdohr (1931). A more recent publication that examines the subject is Process Mineralogy, a conference proceedings of The Metallurgical Society (TMS, 1981). However, it is worthwhile to review some of the principles and advantages of microscopic examination of rocks, ores, and mill products. Transmitted light Microscopists can look at materials in transmitted or reflected light. Studying transmitted light is what is usually meant by petrography. In this method, the light passes through the specimen. The upper polarizing filter can be moved in (crossed nicols) or out (open nicols) of the light path. The specimen can be a thin section, a slice of rock mounted on a glass slide and ground to 30 µm (>400 mesh). Or, it can be a sample of rock or ore crushed to about 70 µm (200 mesh). Transmitted light study is particularly suited to gangue minerals, such as quartz, carbonates, and feldspars, and to the study of alteration processes and products. It has some applications to liberation studies. Minerals are identified in transmitted light by observable and measurable optical parameters, such as cleavage and twinning. The Park City District, one of three major mining districts in Utah, is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains. The district has been in near continuous production since 1869. Production has been sustained from exceptionally long bedded replacement ore bodies in the Thaynes, Park City, and Humbug formations and also from several major veins. The use of CCD (counter current decantat.io;1) thickeners, or; clarifiers, in the gold mining industry is quite common. Although there are a number of technologies in the industry which utilize these types of tanks, the fundamental requirement is to settle leach tailings and eventually separate gold and silver "values" from the "barren" (no values) solution. The thickener separation process varies depending upon the raw ores found in any specific mine. In mines where rudimentary, rocky ores are most common the settling process is fairly straight-forward and uncomplicated. But, for those mines with complex carbonaceous ores, usually identified by high silting, clay components, the ability to monitor and control the settled materials is quite laborious and costly. The task of monitoring and maintaining control of settled residue in clarifiers and thickeners, of any design, is difficult in any industry, but due to the added desire in the gold mining industry of leaching the values from the liquid slurry, the problem is multiplied. Other common activities taking place in the thickeners are exaggerated internal flow rates, settleable solids activity due to rake movement, and the settling activity generated by flocculents being added to the liquid medium. All of this action within the liquid column causes the continual monitoring of the interfaces within the tank close to impossible.

It has been demonstrated for two totally different silver bearing and cyanide refactory concentrates that the formation of silver jarosite can be prevented through the addition of iodide to the autoclave feed. A molar ratio of r/ Ag+ of no more than 1 was sufficient to raise silver extractions in a subsequent cyanide leach from 4% after autoclaving without iodide addition to 98% for the sulpho-salt concentrate and from 15% to 97% for the pyritic acanthite concentrate. Flowsheet proposals will be discussed to prevent loss of the iodide additive. The use of chloride instead of iodide will also be reviewed.

Public domain ventilation simulation programs have been well accepted by the mining engineers, but preparing the input and interpreting the results are labor intensive tasks. High performance personal computers and versatile CAD packages provide the means to quickly create the network and display the results. The enhanced simulators work from computerized as-mined map, the projected mine layout and timing maps. Using on screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of AutoCAD, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects the branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the parameters shown along each branch. The software then calculates the length of airways and computes the branch resistances where needed and converts the input into the required format and passes the data to the Pennsylvania State University or U.S. Bureau of Mines ventilation programs. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.

The only known attapulgite clay deposits of any considerable extent and purity in the United States are roughly bisected by the Georgia. Florida state line between Decatur County, southwest Georgia, and Gadsden County, northwest Florida. Although attapulgite clay occurrences both farther East and South are known and have been mined to some extent in the past, at the present time it can be said that substantially: all of the commercial attapulgite clay mining and pro¬cessing is concentrated in a roughly rectangular area some 25 miles long by 15 miles wide,, in the general region of Attapulgus, Georgia, and of Quincy and Havana, Florida. Within this area are located the clay processing plants of the four major producers as well as most, if not all, of the currently active mining operations. The approximate location of the plants and of some of the open mines are shown in the local area map, Figure No. 1, for the purpose of orientation only.

INTRODUCTION Iron is the world's most widely used metal and constitutes about 5% of the earth's crust. Iron ores are found widely distributed throughout the world. Because of its wide occurrence and relatively low value, an iron ore to be merchantable must contain a relatively high percentage of the metal to be considered as a source of iron. Few ores containing less than 25% iron would be considered as ore unless they existed in large amounts and could be concentrated very cheaply. The grade of the ore, the ease of concentration, and the transportation cost to market are fundamental considerations deter- mining its worth. Iron never occurs as a natural metal except in meteorites. Most iron ores occur as oxides, and to a lesser degree as carbonates. A small amount is recovered as a byproduct from iron sulfides. Iron ore must be reduced (oxygen removed) to metal for use. Iron is marketed in many forms and combinations, such as pig iron and a great variety of steels. Iron is practically never pure as marketed but contains varying amounts of carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and alloying elements such as nickel, chromium, etc., all of which affect the physical proper- ties of the end product. Please note that in this section all analyses ore on a dry basis and all tonnage figures are on a long-ton basis of 2,240 lb unless otherwise noted.

The great increase in post-World War I1 use of molybdenum was made possible by discoveries of that metal in porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits. This section documents significant porphyry molybdenum discoveries of the post-war period. The most important discovery was Henderson in Colorado. It is not only one of the world's largest and richest, but it was found by a team of geologists who defined the hood model and tested it successfully at Henderson. Under the leadership of Stewart Wallace, these scientists established a set of criteria for exploration for Henderson-type de- posits that was copied by the industry. The discovery bf vertical cylinder type porphyry molybdenum deposits was less renowned. Boss Mountain in British Columbia and then Mt. Pleasant in New Brunswick were given relatively scant notice, compared with the Henderson discovery. However, these deposits have geometrics distinct from that found in the typical hood, which directly affects their exploration characteristics. Mt. Pleasant, included in this section, is a well defined, near vertical breccia pipe. Both the Henderson and Mt. Pleasant discoveries were made by relatively small groups operating independently of the bureaucracy that characterizes large corporations. The management role in each case was one of encouragement. In addition, Wallace had the beneficial experience of working for Climax, whose objective was the discovery of porphyry molybdenum deposits. Henderson was the natural outgrowth of the exploration effort by those who studied and understood the Climax deposit.

Drilling underground in the Grasberg dewatering drifts has routinely hit water aquifers with high flow rates and pressures. Two types of holes are used. Pilot holes probe ahead of the tunnel development to intersect aquifers ahead of the face. And dewatering holes dewater rock formations that will drain water from the Grasberg pit and allow tunnel development to proceed safely. Recently, static pressures of >8.3 MPa (> 1,200 psi) have been recorded with flows from a 100 mm (4 in.) HQ core hole measured at 5,700 L/min (1,500 gpm). The waterflows can be slightly acidic, necessitating the use of stainless-steel collar gear to resist corrosion. These rates were anticipated and contingencies were planned early on to deal with these conditions. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) established procedures to maintain the safety of the drill crews, to enable coring of the rock, and to maintain the safety of the miners driving the drifts. The collar gear controls the waterflows because these drill holes are a vital source of water for the concentrator.

The formation of petroleum is normally thought of as a geologically lengthy process, involving the accumulation of organic matter, its gradual burial, diagenetic breakdown via geochemical reactions, maturation, heating within a 75-150'C "oil window" induced by normal geothermal gradients in the subsiding basin, and slow product migration into structural traps (Tissot and Welte, 1984, Hunt, 1979). The entire process can take millions of years and, indeed, most oil reservoirs probably formed in this manner. How-ever, today in sedimented, submarine rift basins (Fig. 1), Cl to >C40 hydrocarbons with the chemical and physical properties of crude oil are forming in demonstrably much shorter time by rapid thermal maturation of immature organic matter in hydrothermal regimes that are unusually high for sedimentary basins (Brault and Simoneit, 1988a, b; Didyk and Simoneit, 1988; Kawka and Simoneit, 1987; Peter et al., 1988; Simoneit, 1983; 1984; 1985a,b; 1988; Simoneit et al., 1984; 1987; 1988).

In recent years, there has been increased interest in construction problems presented by karst topography. Twenty-five years ago, karst areas were by-passed for development. Today, the high cost of land and population pressures are requiring utilization of karst areas. Areas exhibiting karst features can be satisfactorily developed so that construction can proceed in a normal manner; or the areas may be left undeveloped and the underground drainage system abused by improper use causing or contributing to structural collapse, excessive erosion, and a grave threat to the stability of land development and the environment. The term "karst" is a comprehensive term applied to areas underlain by soluble rock that possess a topography formed chiefly by the dissolving of rock and the diversion of surface waters to underground routes. There are four features which contribute to the maximum development of karst. 1. A soluble rock, preferably limestone, must be present at or near the surface of the ground. Occasionally, dolomite will suffice.

GENERAL HYDROLOGIC REGIME The total hydrologic cycle must be considered when evaluating potential ground water problems in a mining environment. Precipitation is the ul¬timate source of all surface water and essentially all ground water. Stream flow during low flow periods often orig¬inates as seeps or stream gains (base flow) where the water table intersects the land surface. A stream that is higher in elevation than the ground water system may lose flow, thereby recharging the ground water system. The magnitude of stream gain or loss is dependent upon the hydraulic conductiv¬ity and related properties of the underlying hydrostratigraphic units. Ground water moves constantly from recharge areas to discharge areas (streams and springs) usually at very slow rates. Large quantities of ground water may be in¬tercepted in many underground mining environ¬ments. Construction of an underground mine in saturated formations may encounter ground water inflows ranging from very small to very large and from continuous to intermittent depending upon the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic units penetrated. SURFACE WATER VARIABLES Precipitation occurs in different forms, varying amounts, and with a wide assortment of temporal and areal distributions in the various mining dis¬tricts within the United States. Mine inflow can be affected in a matter of hours by precipitation events where there is a direct hydraulic interconnection between the mine and the surface through fractures or a mine opening. The timing, form, amount, and distribution of precipitation should be evaluated in a mine inflow study. A portion of the precipitation that falls in a topographic basin moves as sheet flow to runoff channels (Fig. 1). Some of the precipitation infil¬trates the unsaturated soil zone where it can either move laterally as interflow to the surface system to augment stream flow or move downward as re¬-charge to the ground water system. The unsatu¬rated zone (called the zone of aeration or vadose zone) can range in thickness from essentially zero to a few hundred feet. The saturated zone or ground water system occurs below the water table (zone where hydrostatic pressure is greater than atmos¬pheric pressure) where all the pores are filled with water (Freeze and Cherry, 1979, p. 44). Moisture can be lost from any of the systems (surface water system, unsaturated zone, and ground water sys¬tem) by the processes of evaporation and transpir¬ation which return moisture to the atmosphere. Stream flow consists of runoff and interflow components plus an additional base flow compo¬nent (Fig. 2). Base flow constitutes ground water discharge to a stream. Base flow plays an increas¬ingly significant role as total stream flow declines. Base flow is important because it constitutes much if not all stream flow between periods of precipi¬tation when runoff and interflow have largely dis¬sipated. INTERACTION OF SURFACE WATER AND GROUND WATER SYSTEMS Recharge from a surface water system to ground water systems can occur via unsaturated or saturated flow. The amount of recharge is depen¬dent primarily upon the vertical hydraulic conduc¬tivity of the formations underlying the stream and the availability of water. Streams that flow over low hydraulic conductivity formations lose little water even if the ground water levels are significantly lower than the stream. A ground water system may contribute flow to a surface water system but nor¬mally only by saturated flow. This contribution usually takes the form of seeps, springs, and the base flow of streams. We report measurements of the effects of rank, type, and grade of coal on grinding energy and grinding media consumption in a Pitt Mill. The rank of coal has a greater effect on grinding energy than does coal type. The effect of coal grade on grinding energy depends upon the relative grindability of the mineral matter and of the hydrocarbon components of the coal. The mineral matter is primarily responsible for abrasive media wear in a Pitt Mill. The widely recognized HGI test for coal breakage may yield misleading results, particularly for multiple-banded bright and dull coal where the screening procedure used in sample preparation favors the testing of the hardest coal fraction. The work reported here indicates that the Pitt Mill, which grinds the whole coal in a single stage and which yields easily interpreted results, is an excellent candidate for testing coal pulverization characteristics including energy requirements and equipment wear. The measurements of the effects of coal characteristics on grinding energy and on media consumption have been used to estimate the cost of fine grinding in a Pitt Mill. The results, based on a conceptual level evaluation of grinding at the rate of 1 TPH, show that there are trade-offs possible between the cost of energy and cost of media consumption which involve choice of grinding media size. The use of fine-size grinding media to lower grinding energy and to increase throughput can be deceptive because the total cost of grinding must consider both energy and media consumption.

The concepts of conditional probabi1ity and geometrical probability are used to establish a relation between the probability density of the trace length and the probability density of the discontinuity diameter. The discontinuity is represented as a thin circular disc. A numerical solution scheme is used to obtain the probability density of the disc diameter from the probability density of the trace length. An example was used to illustrate the possibly large difference between the mean discontinuity diameter and the mean trace length.

Appalachian coal mines include operations in eastern Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. During 1994, they produced a total of about 342.5 Mt (377.6 million st) of bituminous coal. This figure represents 37% of the total production from the United States. This region contains nearly all of the nation's coking coal reserves and high-quality compliance steam coal that will be in demand after the turn of the century as utilities comply with phase two of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment. Figure 1 shows the location of the study area and the general regions that supply various coal types. Data for the study reviewed here were compiled and interpreted from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) production reports, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission 423 reports, King's Export database and additional data from the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Energy Information Administration (EIA). Table I is an overview of the total production from Appalachia and the delivered tonnage to various sales categories.
