In addition to various mining activities per se, these can include other processing functions such as crushing and agglomeration, various types of heavy civil construction, other types of technical and administrative support, and even assistance with financing. Having an interest in coal slurry pipelines from a decade of arguments with Ed Wasp and crew at Bechtel about pumping thicker slurries slower, I immediately read this article and found nothing in it pertinant to the title. Ayat and Scott pumped five unidentified coals at 9% solids (50%-60% is the area of interest) in a 25-mm (1-in.) pipe around two square elbows through a 76-mm (3-in.) cyclone for up to 60 minutes and sized a large number of samples of unstated size on an unidentified wet screening device. They did not measure power consumption, discharge pressure, flow rate, or give pump tip speed or impeller diameter. They siad the cyclone had a "high" pressure drop (unmeasured) and did much of the degradation (measured) but more or less per unit of energy expended? Hargrove was not measured, so there are no data as to whether it would correlate with degradation. The authors conclude, with no attempt, correlation is "hard to establish." Please experiment before concluding. I am at a loss to know what "increasingly smaller size" means, much less what theory says such particles take "exponentially larger quantities of energy," which the authors neglected to measure. If such experiments without pertinent data or justified conclusions must be published, please attach a pertinant title.

The traditional way of generating open-pit mine production schedules has several limitations. This work addresses the design and production-scheduling problem by considering minimum operational space requirements under a Direct Block Scheduling approach to generate extraction sequences that satisfy the operational space required. For this, traditional formulations were extended by including a new set of constraints that generate operating spaces for mining equipment to move and extract material. Then, a heuristic algorithm produces close to optimal practical pushbacks. This proposal was applied in a case study, and the results show its ability to generate practical production schedules without sacrificing expected return, obtaining differences in terms of Net Present Value (NPV) lower than 1% when compared to the traditional approach.

Many oxide silver and molybdenum deposits remain undeveloped because chemical extraction yields poor recoveries or is environmentally unacceptable. Bioreductive leaching of such ore samples at MBX resulted in high extractions of silver and molybdenum. When baseline, three-day, cyanide bottle-roll tests were conducted on manganiferous-oxide silver ore, 13.7% of the silver was extracted. In contrast, 86% of the silver was microbially solubilized into the organic growth medium by bioreduction with 99.8% dissolution of manganese. A followup cyanide bottle-roll test yielded an additional 8.5 % silver dissolution, for a total extraction of 94.5%. Baseline, three-day, acid bottle-roll tests of the iron-oxide molybdenum ore Yielded 1.8% molybdenum. However, bioreduction solubilized 93.3% of the molybdenum into the growth medium. An additional 0.3% molybdenum was solubilized during the followup acid bottle-roll test. Microbial treatment of refractory oxide ores with bioreductive bacteria resulted in higher extractions of silver and molybdenum than conventional chemical leaching. The bioleaching process occurred at a near-neutral pH at ambient temperatures. The bacterial solubilization of silver and molybdenum was achieved without the use of cyanide or sulfuric acid.

Although the concept of centrifugal recovery has been around in one form or another for many years, it has not been until recent times that it has become clearly understood and properly put into perspective. Simplistic in theory, it is when one begins to examine the variables involved that the true complexities of this matter begin to emerge. In creating an enhanced g force concentrator, there are many aspects both positive and negative that are encountered. Many conditions that are inherent to all conventional 1 g concentrators do not apply to centrifugal concentrators and therefore very few cm factors exist between them. In developing this technology, virtually all principles were proven by method of trial and error. Among the topics discussed are the effect of g force enhancement on particulate behavior with respect to size and shape, density, enrichment, fluidization, and the "teeter principle". In addition, we will discuss the physical effects of g force enhancement with respect to manufacturing in the areas of abrasion, bearings, and vibration. In discussing the recovery parameters of centrifugal concentrators we will draw direct comparisons to various other recovery methods, outlining the conditions most favorable to their application.

"INTRODUCTIONProject-related studies showed that lab tests are a helpful tool for the planning of EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in cohesionless soils. This type of ground commonly represents the extended application range for EPB shields, which demands for a treatment with additives. Considering soil conditioning with foam, so far, approaches exist for the investigation of the foam quality and of the conditioning behavior of soils (e.g. (EFNARC GUIDELINES 2001 2003)), but not any standards for testing procedures related to soil conditioning. State-of-the-art research on the topic is and was conducted for example in Bochum (Germany) cf. (Budach 2012; Maidl 1995), in Lyon (France) cf. (Quebaud et al. 1998), in Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain) cf. (Borghi 2006; Peña Duarte 2007), in Delft (Netherlands) cf. (Bezuijen and Schaminée 2001), in Turin (Italy) cf. (Borio 2010; Peila et al. 2013; Vinai 2006), and in Aachen (Germany) cf. (Vennekötter 2012). Additionally, applied science is reported by the tunneling practice and suppliers of conditioning agents. Although the research focus in all these and further studies varied, similar test methods and test series were applied. A standardization of essential properties and testing methods (setup and procedures) however did not take place. The results from laboratory testing can only function as index values for practice because in the studies, production and application of the conditioning agents mainly takes place under atmospheric conditions. Nevertheless, the tests enable basic understanding of feasibility as well as processes and interactions going on during soil conditioning. For recommendations for standardized and reproducible testing see (Budach 2012; Budach and Thewes 2015).The most extensive investigations on the flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures have been performed by using the slump test from concrete engineering, cf. (DIN EN 12350-2 2009-08), which originally is applied on evaluating the workability of fresh concrete. Although this test does not describe the actual flow behavior, it rather represents an index on the workability, very much experience exists with this test method. Besides others, the workability – or flow behavior – of the EPB support medium certainly is a major factor of influence on the properties of the material in the excavation chamber and thus, for effective tunneling with EPB shields, cf. (Galli and Thewes 2014). For a summary of various investigations on the workability of conditioned soils using the slump test and resulting recommended slump ranges see (Budach 2012; Vinai 2006). Thereof, slumps between 10 and 20 cm have been reported as suitable workability for EPB applications. However, there is actually not much known about the real flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures related to rheological properties such as the viscosity (?) or potential yield stresses (t0). These physical values are necessary for a realistic determination of face pressure, for the design of required torques, and for an evaluation of the material flow at different locations in the excavation chamber, in the screw conveyor or on the conveyor belt. To generate a linear pressure distribution at the tunnel face, as it is assumed a priori, a low-viscosity fluid is favorable, whereas in the screw conveyor, a high-viscous fluid is needed for a controlled pressure decrease. On the conveyor belt, yield stress plays an important role preventing deliquescence and spilling from the belt. Attempts in characterizing the actual flowing of soil-foam mixtures have so far only been made by few researchers, the application of rheometry is rare."

INTRODUCTION In the fall of 1983, the fourth new Rapid Transit System constructed in this country in the last forty years will go into revenue service. The Baltimore Metro will bring to this major Mid-Atlantic seaport the first phase of a planned intermodal transit system, serving a metropolitan area with a population in excess of four million people. Originally, the Mass Transit Administration (MTA) considered construction of a twenty-eight mile system known as Phase 1. Its two lines would run from the center of Baltimore City, one going northwest to Owings Mills and the other south to Anne Arundel County. Legislative approval was granted in April, 1976; however, funding was limited to constructing a segment fewer than eight miles in length, along the northwest corridor from Charles Center to the Baltimore City county line. This segment is known as Section A. The project is 80% federally funded and 20% state funded, with a capital cost estimate of $797,000,000 to complete. This report addresses the development and implementation of a Coordinated Insurance Program for the construction phase of Section A, and includes a description of the associated risk management process. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF SECTION A Section A of the Baltimore Metro is composed of a rapid transit line eight miles in length which serves the northwest corridor between Charles Center in downtown Baltimore and Reisterstown Plaza at the Baltimore City county boundary. In July, 1988, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment in Underground Coal Mines recommended that the Secretary of Labor set in motion a mechanism whereby a diesel particulate standard can be set. Prerequisite to establishing a standard would be the development and evaluation of instrumentation to measure diesel particulate. In response, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Dust Division, has been evaluating instrumentation that can be used to determine diesel particulate levels in underground mines. This instrumentation employs the principle of impaction to separate particles by size, thereby, separating the diesel and nondiesel particulate. Separation of the particulate by size was chosen because diesel particulate is generally less than 1.0 micrometer in size. No other methods have been developed to successfully distinguish between the coal and diesel particulate. MSHA developed an impactor that is inexpensive and compatible with existing pumps and filter holders. The instrumentation evaluation has primarily focused on the repeatability and performance of several personal dust samplers. The samplers tested include the Sierra-Andersen Model 298 personal impactor and MSHA developed personal impactor. The MSHA impactor is inexpensive and compatible with the existing pumps and filter holders. In addition to evaluating the precision and performance of these instruments, tests have been conducted to determine background levels of submicron particulate in nondieselized coal mines and to measure the submicron particulate content in dieselized coal mines. Tests were conducted in coal mines where diesel equipment was used only in outby areas and also in coal mines where diesel equipment was used for face haulage. This paper describes the results of the tests and provides a description of the instrument at ion used to conduct the tests.

4.1 INTRODUCTION There have been numerous methods developed for predicting the final subsidence and final displacement profiles (Voight and Pariseau, 1970; Brauner, 1973a; Kratzsch, 1983). But for discus- sion purposes, they can be classified into six categories: theoretical, profile function, influence function, graphical, physical, and numerical modeling. The theoretical method employs mainly continuum mechanics theories and attempts to explain the mechanisms that lead to sur- face subsidence. Many models using nearly all kinds of material behavior have been developed. These include elastic (Salmon, 1963; Berry, 1964), plastic (Pariseau, 1968), viscoelastic (Iman, 1965), and elastoplastic (Dahl, 1969). The Profile Function Method is essentially a method of curve-fitting against the measured subsidence profiles in a particular mine or region. There are more than 20 profile functions developed empirically for nearly all major coalfields in the world. These include, to name just a few representative ones: Hungary (Martos, 1958), Japan (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1968), Russia (Avershin, 1947), United Kingdom (Wardell, 1965), and USA (Peng and Chen, 1981; Karmis et al., 1984). The NCB's graphical method in the subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) also belongs to the profile function method. The influence function method was first proposed by Bals (1931/1932). It was further developed in various periods and stages by Knothe (1957), Liu and Liao (1965), Brauner (1973a) and Marr (1975). This method is now widely used in various parts of the world. The physical models include sand (Litwiniszyn, 1959; Pariseau and Dahl, 1968) and gelatin (King and Whetton, 1958; Khair et al., 1986). They are used mainly to study the parameters that control subsidence behavior. The most popular numerical method is the finite element technique. It can simulate nearly every conceivable material behavior, inhomogeneity, bedding planes, anisotropy, and various boundary conditions. This versatility is absolutely necessary considering the ever-changing geologic and mining conditions encountered. In the following sections, only those methods that have been applied to US coalfields will be discussed. Furthermore, the methods for prediction of several key parameters such as maximum subsidence, maximum possible subsidence, and maximum displacement are discussed first, because they are the key parameters to be used in the profile function, influence function, and graphical methods.

With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. Experiments have been conducted on a 76¬mm water-only cyclone treating cowl below 2 mm size having different proportion of -0.075 mm fines. The effect of cone angle of the cyclone (compound cone) has been analyzed on water split, separation of -0.075 mm fines, separation of coarse solids, and on separation behavior of individual size ructions of the feed. It has been noted from the results that there exists a linear relationship between the flow rate of water in the feed and flow rate of water reporting to overflow stream. This relationship is independent of the cone angle and, with changes in the fines content in the feed, only the intercept of the straight varies, keeping the slope constant. Further, it has also been found that the percentage of fines below 0.075 mm reporting to the overflow is directly proportional to the percentage of feed wafer reporting to the overflow. This relationship is found to be independent of the cone angle and the fines in the feed. The performance of the water-only cyclone has been analyzed by plotting partition curves for different experimental conditions. In addition to this, the Rosin-Rammler equation has been fitted to the partition curves of the hulk feed and individual size-fractions. Tile analysis of the results has revealed that the specific gravity of separation increases with increase in the cone angle of the cyclone while it decreases with increase in percent fines present in the feed. Mathematical relationships have been developed to relate the variation in SG50 with cone angle and percent fines in the feed.

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of generally accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.

Problems of how to use artificial intelligence (AI) methods and expert systems (ES) to control complex industrial projects have lately become significant in practical terms. Mining ventilation systems undoubtedly belong to complex multi dimensional objects of control with stochastic nonstationary and nonlinear processes. Formal models based on automated ventilation control, do require awkward algorithmic solutions, moreover, a number of tasks become the operator's headache, and the quality of their solution depends on his experience and intuition. These tasks include: - identifying pre-accidental situations and determining their causes; - making well-grounded decisions with regard to changing ventilation regimes, forecast of mining operations taken account of; - controlling ventilation systems in emergency situations, e.g. when in accident, etc. It is in this context that we have for a number of years been investigating how to practically use AI methods for operative control in dynamic aero-and-gas mining processes, one of our research directions being devoted to working out a consulting programme for the ventilation system operator. Our researching and modeling problem was identification of aero-and-gas situation in different parts of ventilation network and its interpretation in order to determine possible causes for gas regime changing and unexpected consequences. We would single out the following stages in this task: I. Operative information procession coming to the data base from the sensors and analysis of hypothetical versions (using the associative rules base) with regard to factors which have caused significant parameter fluctuations (e.g. C%(t), H(t), Q(t) etc.)., 2. Selection of hypotheses in the knowledge base and forming conclusions in accordance with reliability scale. 3. Clarifying the obtained conclusions in dialogue with the operator. 4. Correcting the associative rules base.

Within the national and international strategy of the German based construction company HOCHTIEF, the majority of its business units is equipped with the comprehensive software package ARISTOTELES. This software is a powerful business information system for all accounting and controlling related processes in medium-sized and large construction and other related companies. Due to the complexity of the software, time constraints, and limited financial resources an implementation of this software package requires thorough project management. In this paper the relevant elements of project management are outlined based on practical experiences gained during this international IT - implementation project. Special emphasis is directed to the identification and management of potential risks. In this case particular acknowledgement was given to the multinational nature of the project and modernization of the business. This includes thorough reorganization of the company, significant changes of job requirements, and substantial trainings for its employees. At the same time key success factors like knowledge transfer, adoption of Czech legal requirements, commitment of management, networked thinking, and integrated project planning come into play. The costs for implementation had to be carefully evaluated because the software was implemented in a country with a considerably low cost I price level. All these impacts to the business had to be managed within the scope of transformation of business and political environment from socialist to market driven economy.

In the fall of 1988 it became evident that the accuracy of sulfur forecasts for Monterey Coal's No.1 Mine needed to be improved. In addition, it became necessary to predict if any individual train shipments during a month would exceed a contract sulfur limit. The challenge was to develop a forecasting process that would take into account the variability of the coal in the ground as well as the difference between laboratory and preparation plant sulfur reduction efficiency, and the effects of mining coal with multiple units. This paper describes how geostatistics and simulation techniques were used to meet this challenge.

As of 1998 German companies have been engaged in research and development of LIF analyzers for rock identification, i.e. for the fingerprinting of rock by the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). Test work in Germany, Sweden and South Africa showed the potential of this new technique, which operates online and in realtime (1). In 2003 the Finnish company IMA Engineering Ltd Oy commenced building and marketing LIF analyzers under the trade name OreSpex. Today, one OreSpex analyzer has been installed in the Kiruna Mine, Sweden to check the phosphorus content of train loads. In 2004 a second OreSpex analyzer was built for dilution control in the Argyle Diamond mine, Australia. In 2005 another LIF analyzer will be used for test work in various mines in the US. The principles of the technology and status of ongoing work are presented.

Brazil is a country with continental dimensions. It hosts many different varieties of terranes and geological environments in its 8.5 million km2 (3.28 million sq miles). This mineral endowment has been important for the country's economic and social development process since the early colonial period, leaving Brazil with a legacy of almost 400 years of mining tradition. Mining in Brazil started in the early 17th century with diamond and gold discoveries. The made the country the leading producer of both for more than a century. This phase faded by the late 18th century when the alluvial deposits were depleted. It finally yielded to competing countries where technology and capital were being applied more efficiently. This period of mining dormancy lasted from the late 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century when Brazilian mining picked up. There was growing pressure on mineral resources by the affluence of the industrial society. The fast-growing demand resulting from the two world wars had brought the Brazilian mineral wealth back to the scene. This second Brazilian mineral boom made the country a leading producer of iron and manganese ore, quartz crystals and other strategic minerals. This expansion in Brazil's mining industry provided the basis for the country's industrialization process. This was led by the Brazilian steel and petroleum industries. Unfortunately, the thrust provided by this modern industrial basis was not properly used as a lever for further industrial development. The upstream industrialization process was not supported by the proper development of the raw materials supplying basis. The resulting industrial model was heavily dependent on imports of raw materials. It did not support the economic growth and faced fierce industrial competitiveness and sophistication that emerged with the postwar economic boom.

The dissolution kinetics of cobalt in iodine/ iodide solutions were investigated using a rotating-disc technique. Variables studied included temperature, rotating speed, concentration of lixiviants and the pH of the solution. The overall dissolution reaction appeared to be limited by the mass transfer of tri-iodide through the diffusion boundary layer with an Arrhenius activation energy of <16.2 kJ/mol (4 kcal/mol) over the temperature range of 2 to 42ºC. The pH of the solution had little effect, as long as the pH of the solution was <8. However, when the pH of the solution became >8, the dissolution rate decreased dramatically, due to passivation. The rate of dissolution was in good agreement with the dissolution model developed by the authors earlier.

First reports of microbial coal solubilization appeared in the early 1980&apos;s (Fakoussa, 1981; Fakoussa and Truper, 1983; Cohen and Gabriele, 1982). These degradations, which occurred at ambient temperature and pressure, resulted in a dark brown to black viscous liquid and required days to weeks to occur. Rates and degrees of coal biodegradation varied from coal to coal. Hard coals were not extensively degraded (5-7%) while low-rank coals such as Leonardite, a sublignite, were completely solubilized. A correlation between degree of weathering or oxidation of coal and the coals susceptibility to biological attack was observed. This led to oxidative pretreatments as a method to enhance microbial degradation of coal (Strandberg and Lewis, 1986). Products of microbial degradation of coal are water soluble solids that do not have significant solubilities in organic solvents (Wilson, et. al., 1987; Quigley, et. al., 1987; Quigley, et. al., 1988a). Solutions of solubilized coal did not separate or form precipitates which suggested that they were true solutions and not colloidal suspensions. Biosolubilized coal contained more oxygen than starting material suggesting that microbial attack of coals involved oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds. This small change in oxygen content was the only change observed in coal structure during the biosolubilization process. Many coal solubilizing microorganisms have been isolated. Some are lignin degrading organisms such as Phanerochaete chrysosporium and various Streptomyces species (Gupta, et. al., 1988; Wilson, et. al., 1987). This was not unexpected since the structures of lignin and low-rank coals are similar. These organisms produce an enzyme complex, ligninase, that utilizes hydrogen peroxide to oxidatively cleave the bond between a and ß carbons of an aliphatic chain bound to an aromatic nucleus. Another important organism is Trametes versacolor (syn. Coriolus versacolor, Polyporus versacolor). Even though this organism produces a ligninase (Dodson, et.al., 1987), coal solubilization has been attributed to the enzyme laccase (Pyne, et. al., 1987). Laccase utilizes molecular oxygen to oxidatively cleave a - ß bonds using a mechanism similar to that observed for ligninases (Kawai, et. al., 1988). Other coal solubilizing microorganisms have been isolated from coal outcrops (Ward, 1985; Ward, 1988), but enzyme activities responsible for coal solubilization have not been identified. "Estimation of rock drillability is vital for mining and boring operations. For this purpose, many researchers have developed various models and equations to estimate rock drillability. Most of these models aim to determine the drillability of rock and the penetration rate by using the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Although drillability primarily depends on rock properties, other parameters have an impact on drillability as well. One of these parameters is the rotation speed of the bit. This study investigates the effect of rotation speed of the bit on drilling performance. Drilling tests were performed in the laboratory using rotary core drilling and a diamond drilling machine. The relationships between the physical rock properties and the penetration rate were investigated on 15 different rock types and four different rotation speeds were applied to determine the effect of rotation speed of bit on drilling. The uniaxial compressive strength, density, and P wave velocity show strong correlations with the penetration rate. In addition, if the values of the physical and mechanical properties of the rock increase, the effect of the rotation speed on the penetration rate decreases, i.e., increasing the rotation speed of the bit slightly affects drillability on hard and solid formations. 1. Introduction Drilling is one of the most essential operations in the mining industry, beginning from the exploration phase and continuing throughout all stages of production to the end of mine life (Taheri et al. 2016). In addition, drilling is widely using in the construction industry and other engineering operations. Various drillholes (blastholes, injection holes, borehole, diamond wire holes in natural stone mines, etc.), are needed during development and production activities in underground and open-pit mines as well as in dam, tunnel, road construction and sewage systems. For effective drilling operations, it is first necessary to gather information about the formation to be drilled. Drilling should then be performed after selecting appropriate drilling equipment and drilling parameters (thrust, pressure, rotational speed, flushing). Prediction of the drillability of rocks is vital for planning and performing the drilling process. Although, drilling is affected by several factors, the most important ones are related to the geological and mechanical properties of formation (Protodyakonov 1963, Paone et al 1969, Tandanand and Unger 1975, Pathinkar and Misra 1976, Rabia 1985, Perrin et al 1977). Determining the penetration rate is vital for planning a project and calculating the operation costs. The prediction of drilling affects the selection of drilling equipment, the efficiency of drilling equipment, project costs and the process of drilling operations."
