The theoretical model based on fluid mechanics, in conjunction with the laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements, elucidate the size-classification mechanisms in an industrial hydrocyclone. The model has no adjustable parameters and involves solving the Navier-Stokes equations to predict the liquid-phase velocities. The spatial-concentration gradients were determined considering the particle phase in the Lagrangian frame and the classification curve was determined by balancing the forces acting on the particle. The force balance requires liquid velocities, which in turn depend on the local volumetric concentration of the particles. Hence, complete modeling work involves coupling both the concentration and liquid-phase velocity calculations until convergence is reached. Finally, the experimental and predicted classification curves were presented for 250-mm hydrocyclone operating at high-percent solids.

One can hardly discuss coal pneumoconiosis unless it is placed in the context of the total pneumoconiosis problem in the mining industry. However, it might be well if first we defined a few terms, since it has been my experience that the use of the word pneumoconiosis frequently causes con- fusion among those who are not familiar with the term. Pneumoconiosis comes from two Greek words meaning lung and dust. Hence, the word pneumoconiosis simply means dusty lung, or dust on the lung. There are many forms of the disease, some of which are disabling and some are not. Among the many dusts which cause pneumoconiosis might be included silica, asbestos, coal, talc, iron ore, and many other mineral dusts. Silicosis is a specific form of pneumoconiosis. It is caused by the inhalation of excessive amounts of silicon dioxide in the form of crystalline quartz. The disease is manifested by nodulation of the lungs which is apparent on an X-ray film. Continued exposure to silicon dioxide causes the nodules to grow and ultimately large areas of the lung become scar tissue which pre- vents the lung from performing its physiologic function. In the past decade a principal growth area in refractory technology has been the development and use of extra high alumina refractories. The refractories user is asking for, and is prepared to pay for, higher purity, more dense materials with longer life, less maintenance, and better dimensional tolerance to meet the exacting demand of high output processes. High alumina and bauxite refractories are being used more and more to keep pace with the demand for guaranteed performance. The steel industry, for example, is starting to place great reliance on these products. A unique material now available with all the requirements for extreme purity and density is tabular alumina, already proving itself in many refractory applications.

Several experiments were conducted using a large crib fire adjacent to a Kennedy Metal Products steel stopping in a simulated cross cut to evaluate the proposed mechanisms by which a mine fire would breach the stopping. Temperatures in the convective air paths on both sides of the stopping, at the surface of the roof and 16mm within the roof were measured to evaluate the effects of heat transfer. The results indicate that roof failure is the prime method of breaching this design of stopping.

In spite of the tremendous amount of research conducted in the last few decades. no single blasting theory has been developed and accepted that adequately explains the mechanisms of rock breakage in all blasting conditions and material types. Given specific test environments, conditions and assumptions, individual researchers have contributed valuable information and insight as inputs into blasting theories, although a simple "plug-in" type formula for predicting optimum fragmentation, muck pile geometry and casting distance, is still largely unresolved. There is as yet, no consistent and widely applicable theory of blasting, but only a number of limited and disconnected theories; many of which are empirical in nature and based on ideal blasting conditions. Blasting theories have been formulated and based on pure speculation, years of blasting experience on a trial-and-error approach, laboratory testing, field investigation, and mathematical and physical models adapted from other disciplines of science.

Dramatic economic and political reform is under way in the transitional economies of the world. Transition extends beyond the restructuring of a nation's economy and political thinking. It also affects social, cultural and even religious aspects of society. Transition is a long-term process and generally unstable as the pace of reform is rarely the same across the many spheres of society. As nations modify their economies, industrial activities - including minerals exploration, extraction, processing and trade - are also being affected, according to a Financial Times of London management report. Mining policies are being revised to encourage greater foreign involvement, while legal regimes are being rewritten to protect foreign investments. From India to Peru, and South Africa to Russia, countries have been preparing, improving and expanding foreign investment laws, mining codes and economic stimulus measures to accelerate their minerals development. Privatization of mining is proceeding in many nations. Meanwhile, corporatization of former ministries and government agencies responsible for mining is also occurring. According to Minerals and Mining in the Transitional Economies: Poised For the Future, common objectives in the restructuring of a mining industry are to enhance overall economic and industrial growth, improve efficiencies in mineral recovery and use, acquire newer, advanced technologies, reduce environmental repurcussions of mining and improve safety conditions. The nature of mining is changing noticeably within the transitional economies. The industry is becoming more re¬sponsive to market forces and private sector concerns. The new report examines the changing characteristics of mining in the transitional economies. These include nations moving from centrally planned to market economies, as well as countries in the midst of economic and political reform, including the liberalization of industry. Information is presented to help business planners understand the impacts of transition on mining activities and re-evaluate their longterm strategies and market development policies. The document is divided into 10 chapters. Five of them are devoted to the evolving mining industries of Russia, South Africa, India, Peru and China. These countries were highlighted because their minerals sectors are undergoing changes. These include the opening up of their resources to foreign mining companies. According to the report's author, mining in the transitional economies during the next decade will be characterized by: ? Continued rewriting of national mining policies to create more favorable investment climates. ? Increased exploration for gold and selected base metals in newly opened regions. ? Innovative project financing schemes involving multiple partners and international lending institutions, such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). ? Increased gold and copper ore production capacity resulting from new investment and expansion of existing operations. ? Continued geographical shifting of metallurgical processing facilities from developed to other mineral-producing nations. ? Privatization of state-owned mining and processing assets requiring advanced technologies for improvement or expansion. ? Increased awareness of environmental concerns in business decisions related to mining and metallurgy.

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. Comminution efficiency can be expressed in three different ways. Theoretical Efficiency: actual energy consumed, in a comminution machine compared to the theoretical energy required to make the size reduction. Operating Efficiency: compares the operating work index, calculated from production comminution machinery operating data, to the Bond Work Index from bench scale comminution tests or calculated from pilot plant operating data. Economic Efficiency: income compared to planned income. Using the Bond Work Index and operating work index, this paper explains how to determine operating efficiency.

The Morenci Open Pit Mine, located in south-eastern Arizona, is owned and operated by Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. The Mine has been predominantly a rail mine since its origin in 1937. However, beginning in early 1986, a program was initiated to phase out the rail mining operation and replace it with a more flexible and productive truck haulage scheme. This transformation from rail to truck haulage will be accomplished when the current in-pit crushing and conveying project is completed in late 1988.

Profitable marketing of most minerals is dependent upon the total delivered cost to the user. Transportation costs are often greater than the value of the mineral f.o.b. the mine or processing facility. In some cases, transportation costs are three to five times the mineral cost. For many years, transportation costs were controlled by a complex system involving the transportation companies and supervised by regulatory agencies. This paper will deal with the effects of deregulation on rail costs and outline the major changes in transportation economics.

"INTRODUCTION Shield tunnelling is often used in constructing underground infrastructure in cities due to the ability to limit settlements and damage to existing buildings. However, in an urban environment with soft overburden and buildings on pile foundations such as the North-South Line project in Amsterdam, there is a tendency to design the tunnel well below the surface and below the pile tip level in order to reduce interaction between tunnelling process and piles. This results in deep tunnels and deep station boxes. When the tunnels are located close to the surface and above the pile tip level, this would reduce the required depth of the station boxes and the construction cost. Moreover, other benefits of shallow tunnels are the low operational cost in the long-term and shorter traveling time from the surface to the platforms. Still, the tunnels should be constructed in such a manner that existing buildings are not structurally damaged, which results in a minimum required distance between tunnelling process and existing buildings. In this paper, the extent of the area that is influenced by tunnelling will be investigated in order to determine the limit distance from tunnelling to existing foundations without inducing too large building deformation. From analysing empirical data of many shield tunnels, Peck (1969) firstly presented the settlement trough on the surface induced by tunnelling in soft soil as a Gaussian distribution. This is also confirmed by other authors (Cording and Hansmire, 1975; Mair et al., 1993; Ahmed and Iskander, 2010). In this study, the Gaussian curve is used to investigate the ground movement when tunnelling in order to find the effects on existing structures. Based on the results from centrifuge test and empirical data, Mair et al. (1993) showed that the subsurface settlement profile distributes as the Gaussian curve also. The width of settlement trough at the depth z depends on the depth of the tunnel z0 and a coefficient K depending on depth. Other studies by Moh et al. (1996), Grant and Taylor (2000) and Jacobsz (2003) based on Mair et al. (1993) proposed a limited change of K in various kinds of soil."

The relationship of various genetic classifications of graphite, their properties and general applications are reviewed. The classifications being amorphous, flake, high crystalline (vein) primary synthetic graphite and secondary graphite. The properties discussed are size, carbon, sulfur, ash content, general chemical analysis and degree of graphitization of each type. The major sources for natural and synthetic graphite powders are discussed in addition to factors which govern the cost as well as the supply. The economics of graphite are basically determined by the consumer and the end application. Graphite is a strategic mineral and is on the government stockpile list.

The steady growth of the Northwest portion of the United States over the past two decades, and the very rapid development of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Oregon in particular, led the Calaveras Cement Company people to Shasta County, California in 1957. The presence of a large deposit of high calcium carbonate limestone had been recognized for many years, but it required the momentum of an expanding economy to make these long known reserves valuable. This, plus the availability of a reliable supply of fuel in the form of natural gas, and the ready means of shipping the product to the consumer both by highway and railroad, seemed to offer the proper combination to launch a successful venture. The Calaveras Cement Company had been manufacturing cement by the wet process since 1925 at their plant at San Andreas, California. Starting with two small kilns, the plant in Calaveras County started an expansion program in 1945 that ultimately resulted in the plant as it exists today, consisting of five kilns with a combined production of 4.5 million barrels annually.

The Campbell gold operation of Placer Dome Inc. produces an arsenopyrite-sulfide concentrate that must be treated by roasting, biooxidation or pressure oxidation to obtain high gold recoveries. Pressure oxidation is a proven process that also meets Ontario's stringent environmental regulations. A comparison of biooxidation and pressure oxidation was completed early in 1990. Placer Dome selected pressure oxidation as the preferred process to replace the roaster. The commercial plant design was based on technology supplied by Sherritt Gordon. In July of 1991, the existing roaster operation was shut down and a new pressure oxidation plant was commissioned. The Campbell Red Lake Mine, in Balmertown in northwestern Ontario, is the first plant in Canada to use Sherritt Gordon's pressure oxidation technology to recover gold from a refractory ore body. A similar process has been used at Sao Bento in Brazil since 1986. The Porgera complex in Papua New Guinea also uses Sherritt's technology. At the Campbell Mine, gold occurs as either free gold or is encapsulated with sulfide minerals, mainly arsenopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. These sulfide species are recovered from the ore by crushing and grinding to 80% -75. µm (200 mesh), followed by flotation. About 40% of the gold in the ore is recovered by gravity separation. The remainder reports to the ground slurry feed to flotation. The flotation concentrate averages about 55 to 60 t/d (60 to 66 stpd). A typical analysis is shown in Table 1. Before the installation of the pressure oxidation plant, the flotation concentrate was treated in a two-stage, fluid bed roasting circuit. Roaster off-gases passed through two parallel sets of cyclones, followed by electrostatic precipitators. Arsenic trioxide was captured in a four-chamber baghouse before the gas was discharged to a stack. The arsenic trioxide was sold or conveyed to an underground storage vault. The roasted calcine was fed to a gravity separation circuit and then subjected to cyanide leaching. Gold was recovered from the filtered leach solution in a Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation circuit.

Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after being pulverized to pigmentary size. The world production of iron oxide pigments is estimated by the authors to be between 350 and 400 kt. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world accounts for its use in prehistoric man's artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man's first paint test which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, iron oxides (about 7% of the earth's crust) have the advantage of low cost, permanency, and are non- toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when these properties were desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments produced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $97 million in 1980 (Spimad, Jr., 1980), increasing to $138 million by 1990 (Templeton, 1990) NOMENCLATURE With the increasing importance of the synthetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pigments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products that are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a competitive commercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pigments. Natural pigment ore sources are selected for their special physical-chemical properties and are able to command a premium price over iron ores used for steel manufacturing. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pigmentary particles are produced as opposed to the use of comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments.

The addition of dolomite to iron ore pellets improves their high-temperature reduction properties primarily by increasing their reducibility and raising their softening temperature. In this study we prepared dolomite-fluxed pellets from three different concentrates; Hibbing, a magnetic taconite, Knob Lake, an earthy hematite; and Carol Lake, a mixture of specular hematite with magnetite. The composition n of the concentrates is given in Table I. The pellets were subjected to standard physical tests and the following reduction tests: low temperature degradation, swelling, softening, and thermogravimetric analysis. Petrographic examination and electron microprobe analysis allowed us to evaluate the effect of composition and firing on the phase assemblage. Further, we were able to interpret the test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure. This approach enabled us to determine which fluxed composition best suited each of the concentrates.

The installations to be discussed demonstrate the variety of conditions, materials, and results desired which must be evaluated before a selection is made from the specialized crusher technology available today. Those of you who are closely involved with phosphate rock and phosphate products processing will find some of this information a bit interesting and perhaps alien to your own descriptions or every day references. It is given from a "crusher" manufacturer's viewpoint and therefore is infused With our flair and language. Although most bauxite mined is used to make metallic alu¬minum, more than a million tons of bauxite is used annually in the United States in the manufacture of refractories, chemicals, abrasives, and cement. Raw material requirements are becoming increasingly difficult to meet because high-grade bauxite, required for some uses, is limited. The supply of raw material for high-alumina refractories is most critical because a low-iron bauxite is needed. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, bauxite suitable for use in refractories is limited to a few districts.
