The pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota are the coarse-grained differentiates of the Harney Peak Granite. The Harney Peak Granite was intruded into the Pre-cambrian schist and quartzites and resulted in the Black Hills uplift. In the outer adzes of the granite intrusion occur the pegmatites. In the zoned pegmatites, representing the most highly differentiated portions of the parent magma, occur most of the minerals produced from pegmatites. These are of economic importance and they are the subject of this paper. The various mineral products will be taken up separately.

A pilot plant investigation of a semi-autogenous mill - ball mill circuit is described. The plant was operated with minus eight-inch diabase as feed material to the semi-autogenous mill. The semi-autogenous mill recycle screen underflow was put to a ball mill in closed circuit with a cyclone. An operating Work Index of 13.3 to 14.9 was obtained with the pilot ball mill. This Index is substantially in agreement with the scalped feed laboratory Work Index for 15.3 for recycle screen underflow. The Bond Index of the diabase was 15.8. Thus, one may use the scalped feed laboratory Work Index to size semi-autogenous grinding plant ball mills.

The natural hydrophobic response flotation method for beneficiation of printed circuit board comminution fines (PCB CF) still requires many studies to further basic understanding of the process and the flotation traits that the PCB CF presents. Varying particle size distribution (PSD) and water recovery under the scheme show that higher mass pull, obtained at the finer PSD, gave lower water recovery but higher value loss. The reverse also holds: the least mass pull at the coarsest PSD used, -106 + 75 µm, gave the highest water recovery per unit mass pull with the highest reverse recovery. This is unlike what obtains in primary resources processing, where higher water recovery is often with increased fines entrainment. The reverse recovery loss here is, therefore, more due to entrapment with the heavy mass pull characteristic of the method than to the entrainment of value with water. Other peculiarities of the system observed are discussed, with the goal of improving the performance of the process, and broadening the general knowledge of flotation systems.

The gypsum industry makes significant contribution to the wealth of our nation. This non-metallic mineral ranks in the highest order with America's most precious resources. Evidence of this is borne out by the fact that gypsum is a vitally necessary element in the building, industrial and agricultural industries. In 1967, the United States consumed 14 million tons of this valuable ore. Of .this amount 69% was required by the building industry for the manufacture of building materials. An additional 21% was directed to the industrial market, for the manufacture of Portland Cement and for other industrial uses. The remaining 10% was used for agricultural purposes.

An underground storage field is a gas field where man, not nature, has put all or most of the gas. All but one of those in use today are in the pore spaces or "porosity" of sedimentary rocks, the most common being sandstone. The one exception, near Newcastle, England, is a gas storage in a cavern dissolved from rock salt. The tens of millions of barrels of LPG (liguified petroleum gas) now stored in salt caverns mined in shale is liquid storage, not gas storage, and in this paper I recognize the presence of these installations but do not include them in the gas storage category, Since, with the English exception, gas storages are gas fields, they can all be sorted into the categories used to describe gas fields, 95% of them once gas fields anyway, but some of the remaining 5% are the ones having the greatest effects on underground waters.

Coal and coal mining is no longer the mighty king of industry and in our daily lives and homes that it once had the privilege of commanding. Many of you will remember that one of the chores of your youth was to bring in the scuttles of coal, morning and night, to feed the heater or stoke the furnace in the morning and bank it at bedtime. Growth of gas and oil have displaced coal in home furnaces and commercial buildings, and have taken over some segments of industrial markets. The coal burning locomotives have virtually disappeared in favor of the more efficient diesel engine. However, coal as a prime mover still holds its strategic position as is evidenced by act that the electric power industry almost entirely depends upon coal for its generation.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.

Normally I would like to begin a talk on photogrammetry by defining the word. However modern technology has changed the science so radically that it bears little resemblance to its original definition. Photogrammetry as defined is a science of taking accurate measurements from photography. Today's photogrammetrist, in addition to working with photography, finds himself working with magnetometers, infrared scanners, radiometers, holo¬graphy, lasers, side-looking radar, digital interfaces, computers and countless other modern space age concepts. The modern photogrammetrist is a pilot, photographer, lab technician, mathematician, geologist, programmer, engineer, physicist, and cartographer. His modern instrumentation and many spheres of activity all have a role in the environmental sciences. For example, the magne¬tometer which measures the earth's magnetic fields is used to locate the earth's ore deposits. The infrared scanner captures the heat emitted from the earth to detect ground waters and thermal pollutions. To elaborate on each of his many endeavors would take volumes rather than this short paper. I have elected therefore to discuss what I feel is his most important role in the environmental sciences - that of cartographer.

Application of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is one of the main solutions to achieve a safe and high-performance method of construction in hard rock and soft ground tunneling. In order to adequately assess the progress and potential impacts of the tunneling operations with the TBM, it is required to record a series of data during the tunneling and process of the data to evaluate the TBM performance. Applying the right machine parameters during the excavation not only delivers an optimum penetration rate, but also prevents extra downtime due to over excavation or wear of cutting tools. In this paper, the effect of machine and operational parameters on TBM downtimes has been studied and supported with the real examples of TBM operation data.

The remote face loading and entry convergence monitoring systems, employed at some of the Cyprus Amax's underground coal mines, have been able to continuously record changes in face shield resistance across and entry convergence ahead of the longwall face at any moment during longwall mining. The instrumental data obtained from these systems plus in-situ observations during the mining operation can help us better understand the mechanism of overburden strata movement above a longwall face and verify the effectiveness of the current face and entry supports. This paper describes the functions of both the face and entry monitoring systems, and discusses our findings and the issues related to successful ground control for longwall mining.

"What is past is prologue" - motto of National Archives The question of past, present, and future safety performance in the coal mining industry is not merely an academic one, or one which arises from soul-searching curiosity. It is a question involving pragmatic ramifications, and the answers, or perhaps the public perception of the answers, will have a strong impact on the public policies which influence the course of meeting the Nation's future energy demands. Those of us in the coal industry are keenly aware of the significant impact of the public reaction -- in the form of the 1969 Health and Safety Act -- to -past performance of the coal industry which it found unacceptable. That Act was revolutionary -- and it was expensive. But in finding the industry's past performance unacceptable, the public also recognized its own contributory role through having enjoyed a "buyer's market" forced on a highly competitive industry. One result was to limit the industry's resources and restrict its ability for self-improvement of its safety performance. In acknowledgement of that role, the public picked up the tab for Black Lung disability incurred prior to that time.

The Negociacion Minera Santa Maria De La Paz mining operations are located at La Paz (some eight miles West of Matehuala), State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. These operations consist of a single copper-silver property, called the Dolores mine and a number of silver-low base metal properties. The ores from these several mines are transported by rail, or truck, to the central milling unit. The milling unit has two separate sections to treat the two types of ore. The ores from the several silver-base metal mines are mixed at the mill as they arrive. Up to the present time the silver-base metal ores have been milled to produce a bulk concentrate which carries valued in gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and considerable arsenic. In such concentration the zinc and cadmium values are lost to the operations in their liquidations as they are shipped as lead concentrates. Since these ores have exceptional quantities of arsenic which is concentrated in the milling process, these bulk concentrates have to be sent to a smelter for pre-smelting operations to remove the arsenic.

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a chlorine-oxygen leaching technique for the recovery of metal values from lead-zinc sulfide concentrates. Lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, and silver extractions are in the 95- to 99.9-percent range. During leaching, the zinc, copper, cadmium, and silver are solubilized as metal chlorides, and lead is converted to insoluble lead sulfate. The iron contained in the concentrate is converted to insoluble iron oxide, and a majority of the sulfide is converted to elemental sulfur Minor metals such as copper, cadmium, and silver are recovered by precipitation with zinc dust. Zinc is then recovered from the purified zinc chloride solution by evaporation to dryness; the lead is recovered from the leach residue by brine leaching and crystallization to produce lead chloride. Recovery of zinc and lead metals by fused-salt electrolysis of the chlorides is being studied separately.

Fluorine is a lively element in both its chemical and economic behavior. It was not isolated as an element until 1886 by Moissan. However, its principal source to this day, fluorspar, was known and its special merits recognized long before that time. Our own mining brother, Agricola, is credited with having named fluorite, the mineral name, in 1546 from the Latin, "fluere", to flow. It made things melt and was already being used as a flux. Because fluorspar has been found as a relatively common gangue mineral in metal ore veins, it has long attracted the attention of geological thinkers seeking to, explain the whys and wherefores of veins. Fluorine has been thought of as one of the principal mineralizers, holding metals in ascending vein solutions for deposition close enough to the eventual surface to be accessible for profitable mining.

The conventional cyclic system of deep-level mining by drilling and blasting gives rise to an inadequate degree of stope sorting when mining thin reefs. This results in poor utilization of the capital facilities of a mine in the form of shafts, haulages, airways and associated equipment. Continuous and controlled removal of the thin gold-bearing portion of the reefs would permit better stope sorting and hence greater utilization of capital facilities. Results of experiments to develop hard rock cutting machines for mining are reported and the benefits which could be derived from their use are discussed.

Ever since electricity was introduced, electrical injuries and electrocutions have continued to occur regularly in coal mines. An analysis of the two hundred cases of electrocutions which occurred during 1956 to 1970 indicated that over 50 percent of the incidents were caused by the ineffectiveness or lack of electrical grounding. Research shows that various types of arbitrarily designed ground beds are in use and that the ground resistance and current are often very high and subject to wide seasonal variations. The results of a recent research are discussed in this paper.

Big data is generated from both surface and underground mining operations. Such data contain a wealth of information concerning safety and health in the workplace and production parameters. This paper will discuss the progress towards developing an accurate forecasting model for methane gas concentration based on the analysis of data collected from Atmospheric Monitoring Systems in underground coal mines employing time series models. Several procedures need to be applied to raw data, such as data cleaning and filtering for outlier removal, data homogenization and segmentation, and exploratory statistical analysis. The data analyzed were retrieved from two coal operations in the Eastern US. A negative correlation between barometric pressure and methane gas concentration was established, at least for certain data segments. Such correlations raise the possibility that barometric pressure data can predict variations of gas concentration in the mine. The datasets will be further investigated to establish the robustness of barometric pressure and gas concentration correlation and explore the dependence of gas concentration on other factors related to mine design and operations

Iron, cobalt, and nickel in waste ferric chloride solutions were separated from each other by solvent extraction. The iron was extracted from the cobalt and nickel by the use of methyl isobutyl ketone, and then the cobalt was separated from the nickel by the use of a high-molecular-weight quaternary amine dissolved in a solvent of high aromatic content.
