Roasting of refractory gold ores has the primary goal of oxidizing sulfides and organics to improve gold recoveries prior to leaching. Commercial installations currently utilize bubbling and circulating fluidized beds. The principle of flash roasting is aimed at a more cost effective method of whole ore roasting for large throughput applications. Results of pilot plant testing and scale up to commercial design will be discussed in further detail in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Mineral ore comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding - primary and secondary), natural or manufactured nonmetallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media - steel rods, steel or iron balls, or a combination of autogenous media and steel balls (SAG milling). This chapter covers rod and ball mills utilizing manufactured metallic grinding media. MILL DESIGN The interior surface of rod and ball mills exposed to pulp and/or grinding media are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic or a combination of rubber and metallic wear resistant materials. Rod and ball mills essentially draw constant power, thus are well suited for use of synchronous motors with power factor correction capabilities as drive motors. A net of approximately 120 to 130 percent of running torque is required to cascade the charge in these mills. The pull-in torque is about 130 to 140 percent with the pullout torque to keep the motor in-step (in-phase) generally in excess of 150 percent. When rod and ball mill are started across-the-line the starting and pull-in torques result in inrush currents exceeding 600 percent which possibly result in high voltage drops. To deliver 130 percent starting torque to the mill the motor design must take into account the maximum anticipated voltage drop. Motor torque decreases as the decimal fraction of the voltage available squared. E.g., a motor rated 160% starting torque with a 10% system voltage drop will deliver 160% x or 129.6% torque to its output shaft When it is not possible or practical to start a fully loaded synchronous motor across-the-line it is possible to utilize the motor's pull- out torque to start the mill. By using a clutch, normally an air clutch. between the motor and the mill, the motor is brought up to synchronous speed before the clutch is energized. If the motor has an adequate amount (175 or greater) of pull-out torque the pull-out torque starts the mill without major disruptions on the electrical system. Since the energy release at initial cascade of the mill charge is an inverse function of acceleration time, a minimum acceleration time of 6 to 10 seconds or more is recommended to prevent damage to the mill or the mill foundation. Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simpliest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinionshaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling. Using a speed reducer between the motor and pinionshaft permits using motors having speeds in the range of 600 to 1000 RPM. In this speed range, if power factor correction is not required induction motors can be used; squirrel cage where there is no restriction on inrush current; slip ring where a slow start and low inrush current is required. Air clutches can also be used to ease starting problems with squirrel cage motors. In some areas of the world induction motors and starters are less expensive than synchronous motors at a sacrifice of motor efficiency and power factor correction. Dual drives, that is two pinions driving one gear mounted on the mill, become economical for ball mills drawing more than 3500 to 4000 horsepower (2600 to 3000 kilowatts). Further developments of the low frequency, low speed synchronous motors with the rotor mounted on the mill shell or an extension of one of the mill trunnions could improve the cost picture for these "gearless drives", making them practical for large ball mills. The percent of critical speed, which is the speed at which the centrifugal force is sufficiently large to cause a small particle to ad- here to the shell liners for the full revolution of the mill is given in mill specifications. The US Bureau of Mines conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flammability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could he used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective but not particularly efficient in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish afire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100% utilization.

As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

The relationship between bauxite and energy has two distinct aspects. On the one hand, since virtually all of the bauxite that is mined winds up as aluminum metal, the economic health and future of the bauxite industry and of the bauxite-producing countries depend on the continuing vigour and competitiveness of aluminum against alternative metals and materials. The price of aluminum is, in turn, particularly dependent on the price of energy. Hence, the need for bauxite is ultimately affected by the price of energy. The second aspect relates to location of the bauxite industry. There is no shortage of bauxite resources in the world. For various reasons, as we shall see, there is a growing tendency toward the integration of bauxite mining, bauxite refining and aluminum smelting in those countries that have the resources both of bauxite and of energy necessary to support the entire production chain. Thus, the availability of attractive energy supplies will increasingly favour development of bauxite mining: the traditional export of bauxite as a simple raw material is likely to diminish in relative terms. In short, both the amount of bauxite mined and where this mining will take place are related to energy considerations. Let us first have a brief look at the four basic activities that are involved in our integrated operations: A. The bauxite is mined and moved to an ore plant. This step does not require more than relatively modest amounts of energy normally associated with excavation, loading and shipping of any bulk material. We need about four or five tonnes of bauxite for every tonne of metal produced.

The Palabora Mining Company Ltd. is probably best known for its production of copper since 1965. The success of the PMC mine lies in the outstanding technical and highly organized efficiencies applied to the massive mining, transportation, and treatment operations necessary to produce profitable copper. We are not however going to discuss the well-known copper operation but the extremely successful recovery and marketing of Baddeleyite by the PMC group. Let us first review the extraction process at the Heavy Minerals Plant. Non-magnetic ground ore from the copper magnetic separators is processed in the Heavy Minerals Plant for the extraction of the "heavy minerals" uranium and zirconia (Baddeleyite). Thorium is also present as a potentially recoverable mineral. The content of the minerals in the feed is probably the lowest in the world to be treated commercially. Minerals are separated from the waste ore by a gravity separation process in which the high density minerals segregate preferentially in a waterborne system.

As you can see, this covers a "multitude of sins."

One of the most critical skills developed by underground coal miners is the ability to interpret natural warning signals in terms of impending roof failure. A miner receives a variety of signals which can be called warning and which can be classed broadly by sense: aural, visual, and tactile. This paper concentrates on those signals which are airborne and audible. These signals are creaks, cracks, pops, groans, snaps, booms, tears, rips, and other assorted pulses which emanate from the roof strata, coal pillars, and artificial support in response to the stresses induced by the mine opening. These pulses are sometimes referred to as "talk". Although it is clear that miners rely on roof talk to assess the roof's stability, it is not clear of what roof talk is composed. It has been described in a variety of figurative ways, but has not been scientifically characterized. As will be shown shortly, the purpose of this research is very specific. The ramifications, however, are very broad, and are, indeed, still being followed.

Nature of Empirical Calculations The size reduction of large tonnages of ore and rock is an operation of great magnitude. It is a necessary and important part of industry. Its development has been motivated by practical need and has followed the path of an industrial art without much help from theoretical science. Knowledge has been accumulated from experience. Trial and error established the methods; then collected data were tabulated and served as the basis for empirical equations that have been continually modi¬fied and amplified as new data became available. These equations now constitute the bulk of our present knowledge of comminution. There is no accepted scientific theory that is basic to comminution. In electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering, as well as in many other industrial activities, such theories exist and are extremely help¬ful, but rock is essentially heterogeneous, and the zones of weakness that control its breakage are thoroughly diversified. No theory has yet been discovered which can account for the variability of rock, although many attempts have been made. Empirical equations tell nothing of the why of a phenomenon, but if they are properly derived they can tell much about the how. They always represent only an approximation of behavior but never a law. In a proper empirical equation a symbol is assigned for each of the variable quantities that obviously affect the relationship. In a grinding mill these include mill diameter, mill speed, and feed rate among them. In setting up and revising an empirical equation the cardinal princi¬ple in establishing and modifying it is this: any change must be strictly ascribed to the variable which caused it. A useful empirical equation is rendered useless when a change in any convenient coefficient or exponent is made to make it fit a particular set of data, without certainty that the altered coefficient or exponent is the responsible variable in the new data. Such indiscriminate revisions have brought the use of empirical equations into some disrepute. When existing equations are changed to accommodate new data it is a good rule to make a change which gives results intermediate between the new and the old. A halfway point is usually a good choice.

At Monterey Coal's No. 1 Mine in central Illinois, it became necessary to predict if the sulfur content of individual trainloads of coal would exceed a contract sulfur maximum. Using geostatistics and Monte Carlo-type simulations, a forecasting procedure was developed to meet this need. The developed procedure predicts the monthly, mean sulfur content of the coal shipped and the probability of individual shipments exceeding the contract limit. During the first five months of using this procedure, the forecasted, monthly mean sulfur value was within 0.03% of actual. This represents a significant improvement over the inverse-distance, gridding-based, forecasting used previously.

Long term production planning in open pit mines requires the determination of cutoff grade, mining and milling production rates, mining sequence, mine life, and ultimate pit limits. These variables interact in a circular fashion, that is, the value of a variable can not be determined without the knowledge of the value of the preceding variable in the circle. Therefore, a genuine solution to the problem necessitates simultaneous determination of the variables. Such a solution methodology, comprised of a group of heuristic algorithms and an unconventional dynamic programming algorithm, is described in this paper. The methodology is applied to a small size Western US gold deposit to illustrate its logic and capabilities.

The LaModel program is widely used to calculate stresses and displacements on thin tabular deposits, particularly when multiple seams or complex mining geometry is encountered. The program itself allows the user to create multiple mining steps to show a progressive sequence of mining. However, LaModel considers each individual step as an independent steady-state condition, and any previous loading conditions of the materials are not tracked. It also does not consider any sort of dynamic stress change during the mining process. In certain circumstances, especially in multiple-seam situations, modeling a scenario of the seam of interest without considering the previous mining sequence in the off seams can potentially lead to inaccurate results. The primary objective of this paper is to present a situation where a potentially dynamic, unstable mining condition was encountered. It was not evident until the previous loading conditions in the off seams and the impact of dynamic stress changes in the active seam were considered. It is important to make the mining community aware of these potential modeling scenarios where the path-dependent nature of the mining sequence is of key importance. This paper presents a case history where room-and-pillar retreat mining was being conducted in a relatively deep cover stress regime where multiple seam interactions were present from both undermining and overmining. Mining in the active seam was being conducted with roomand- pillar mining techniques consisting of a series of parallel production panels being successively developed and retreat mined along a set of Mains. In this situation, the traditional global LaModel analysis without any path-dependent adjustments did not fully identify the area of poor conditions that were encountered. This paper explores the impacts of mining in the active seam on the lower seam which, in turn, has a negative impact on the active seam. This provided a solid foundation for the subsequent analysis of the three seams simultaneously. Based on the calibrated model, it is likely that retreat mining in the active seam resulted in increased stresses in the underlying seam that conceivably resulted in additional convergence and, most likely, additionally convergence of the pillars under the panel being developed. This in turn could have caused active subsid- The LaModel program is extremely useful for analyzing multiple-seam mining scenarios. As multiple-seam situations become even more prevalent, the potential for encountering a path-dependent mining scenario also increases. To successfully model path-dependent mining scenarios, the ground control engineer will be required to make sound judgments on the condition of pillars in sub-adjacent seams. These engineering judgments should be based not only on the current state of stress, but also on any prior or future states of stress. This means considering the stresses from over or undermining as well as stresses applied to the sub-adjacent seams from actively mining the seam of interest.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, for instance the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well-established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Centre, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter susceptible of application in this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer, is be-lieved to be novel*.

Growing interest in pit crushing and conveying is evident from the many articles, technical papers, and new equipment development recently presented. Application of a pit crushing and conveying system is complex, as many factors such as mine design, production scheduling as well as initial and ongoing capital and operating costs must be thoroughly and realistically examined. This paper will address the fundamentals to be considered and review several approaches to developing a total system for a new and existing mine situation. The planning function will be outlined and operating and design criteria defined to interface the mining operation and the pit crushing conveying system.

The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (i) the amount of quartz in thesamples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls are necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples. In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.

The principal uses of fine ground mica are as filler in wallboard joint cement, as a filler and surface coating for roofing, as an ingredient in paints, and in oil well drilling mud. The mineral has other uses in the manufacture of rubber, wallpaper, plastics, welding rods, electric insulation, house insulation, and textiles, and as an annealing agent in metal treatment. In recent years, more than 999 percent of the domestic mica produced has been scrap and flake mica (mica which does not meet specifications for sheet mica and is used for producing fine ground mica). There has been a continued increase in mica production for, several years, the 1963 production of scrap and flake mica totaling 117,251 tons.

The paper gives a comprehensive review of the design considerations which determined the choice of the milling plant, a description of the plant and comment on the operating experience to date. Operating experience will include inter alia a description of the mill liners installed with subsequent changes due to wear patterns, the mill inlet sealing arrangement, steel ball addition, mill outlet sump design, cyclone feed pump liner wear patterns and comment on the efficiency of the linear screens for wood chip and tramp removal. Finally a view on future trends in South African milling practice with respect to type and size of plant.
