The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

The wide distribution of limestone and dolomite and the decentralization of the depedent industries give the State Geological Survey a major role in the, development of these mineral resources. The amount of geological information necessary for efficient exploration is so large that few companies can afford to do the necessary basic field work or store the data. The state surveys fill these responsibilities and thus might be said to serve as the geological research departments of the limestone and dolomite industry. At the Indiana Geological Survey, the data of most value to limestone producers are in the form of unpublished measured sections, well records, cores, chemical analyses, directories, and geologic maps. Much of this information is published in summary form. The Survey also assists individual members of industry in exploration and evaluation of mineral deposits. In addition, a progressive State Survey provides the geological infor¬mation necessary for the development of new resources which do not appear to justify industry's own preliminary efforts.

The purpose of this work is to conduct a preliminary analysis of the spatial variations of the thickness of lignite layers in the area of the Amyndeo mine, and to estimate the lignite reserves of the mine. The reserves are estimated by the method of the Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. The experimental semivariograms are evaluated for both data sets in different spatial directions. Two possible theoretical models for the experimental semivariogram (the exponential and a novel Spartan model) are compared and discussed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging precision. The performance of kriging interpolation is discussed in terms of cross validation measures.

Introduction Amidst the apparent chaos of the final push to complete a major construction project, a small group of specialists works with great intensity. Armed with yellow "in test" and green "turned over to operations" tags, these startup engineers follow detailed preoperational test procedures to confirm that a plant is ready to operate. They follow a test schedule designed to complete individual process system in the order they will be needed by operations. After extensive preliminary testing, the startup engineers begin the truly exciting part of their work - initial operations. The thrill of engaging the clutch for the first time on a 10,000 horsepower grinding mill makes all the long hours worthwhile. Preoperational testing and startup are of critical importance to the success of a project. No other aspect of a construction project allows such opportunities for success or failure, and no other aspect is so critically influenced by careful planning. At Bechtel, the tasks of preoperational testing and startup are among the responsibilities of the Mine and Plant Operations group. The Preoperational Testing Process Preoperational testing is the transition phase between constructon and startup on a new plant. It includes the preparation of detailed test schedules and procedures. The schedules are used to coordinate construction completion activities, so that systems are available for startup and operations in a rational sequence. The procedures form the basis for performing the testing and documenting its completion. Tests include instrument calibration, wire insulation tests, wire termination verification, mechanical alignments and inspections, and system cleaning and flushing. Where possible, the systems are then operated on water and their performance recorded. Normally, either the construction contractor or a team of specialists has the responsibility to perform preoperational testing. Witnesses to the testing may be owner operations and maintenance personnel, engineers from the design firm, or specialists assigned to the project who provide assistance and guidance to the contractor in addition to witnesing the work.

A model for simulation of gravity regrinding circuits is presented. The model can predict "secondary" density distribution data from a series of "primary" grind/density distribution tests. Thus middlings regrind requirements can be predicted from primary grind data. Traditional methods of regrind design involve lengthy and tedious tests programmes. The model presented herein can considerably reduce the quantity of testwork required for regrind design. The model can also be used to design primary gravity grinding circuits. A parameter estimation scheme and experimental data validating the model are presented.

This paper deals with the various electro- and biochemical mechanisms involved in the bioleaching of multisulfide minerals such as those containing copper-lead-zinc and copper-nickel-iron. Galvanic series for sulfide minerals consisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pentlundite, and pyrrhotite in an acid bacterial leaching system is illustrated, and the role of relative electrochemical activity on selective dissolution is discussed. Typical leaching results are shown to illustrate the practical applicability of galvanic effects in bioleaching of multisulfides. Attachment of Thiobacillus fewooxidans onto chalcopyrite and sphalerite mineral substrates is illustrated through scanning electron micrographs. The role of high-metal-tolerant, specially adapted strains in the leaching of multimetal concentrates is also outlined.

Clay minerals can be a source of problems in heap leaching operations. The ore for many heap leach operations is commonly acid-sulfate alteration zone rocks which may be found in hot springs deposits as well as the supergene zone of other near- surface gold deposits. Clays can be important constituents of these ores. Swelling clays, such as smectite, can come loose from the agglomerated ore, migrate within the heap, concentrate in pore spaces and often plug up flow channels in the heap Cement is often added to the ore as a binder during the agglomeration process. Lime is added for pH control. Their presence, combined with the sodium cyanide commonly used to leach, can raise the pH of the leach solution to 10 or even 12. This very alkaline solution can cause dissolution of some mineral Some clays, such as kaolinite, are not very stable in high pH solutions. They can be dissolved and reprecipitated as other clay species if sufficient silica and the appropriate cations are available in solution. Silica gels and amorphous materials can also be created from the dissolved kaolinite and other minerals and act as retardants to the flow of leach solutions in the heap. Therefore, before a heap leach operation is built, the operator should evaluate the clays in the ore and test the agglomeration procedure. It is important to know not only the mineralogy and the chemistry of the leach environment but how the minerals and solutions interact and what the products of this interaction are. A hypothesis is presented in this paper that expanding smectite- bearing clays can be generated within the heap. How and why this happens will be explained.

South Africa has adopted its own code for public reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in 2000. The South African Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code or Code) (SAIMM 2000) is presented here in its local and global context. The main aspects of the Code are listed and elaborated upon. The Code has been written with the participation of the major South African stakeholders in the field including Government institutions, the legal confraternity and the mining industry. The Code is modelled on, and is 90% compliant with, the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) (AusIMM 1999). The paper also elaborates on the duties and responsibilities of Competent Persons signing off resource and reserve reports and on the listing requirements of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE), formerly the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, which has officially adopted the Code. The listing requirements were updated in 2000 to incorporate the SAMREC Code and subsequently in 2002, effective 2003. The ongoing obligations of the JSE for the exploration and mining companies are being compiled and are expected to be effective from early 2004.

Cluster analysis is used to design grade soft-sensors in a rougher flotation plant and a ball mill overload soft-sensor. Soft-sensors are virtual sensors which either replace unavailable actual sensors or infer measurements for non existing sensors. In the case of the grade soft-sensors clustering serves to determine clusters of related operating points. To each cluster there corresponds an ARMAX model structure whose parameters are estimated using only the points in the corresponding cluster. Thus a much better correlation is found than if all the data points were used for a global model. The problem of identifying clusters when the measurement of the real sensor is not available is addressed. In the case of the overload soft-sensor, variables were selected which are related to overload, either from a phenomenological point of view or according to operator experience. Different clusters are formed, some of which are identified as determining an overload condition or a possibility of such condition. Each of these clusters has a set of operating conditions which suggests the corrective action to be taken when necessary. Both kinds of soft-sensors are tested with industrial plant data and promising preliminary results are obtained.

Traditional headed rebar has existed in the mining industry as a ground support product for many years. The head of a rebar bolt is most commonly produced by hot upset die forging. Upset die forging produces a rugged, simple head that performs well. Certain elements of the head must comply with regulatory standards, such as ASTM F432-95, which offers a standard test procedure to ensure quality of the product. The head style produced by all major manufacturers has been optimized to reduce manufacturing costs, provide greater miner safety and provide an excellent performing product. Observations were made in some mines of heads failing under in-situ loading. These observations could not be replicated according to the ASTM testing method. This paper highlights the problem and how a solution was developed. The development includes pictures of in-situ failures from the underground operations, laboratory replication tests indicating how this loading occurs, and then the use of this calibrated test method to validate the new design created.

INTRODUCTION Observations during construction form an integral part of the design and construction of major underground works. Observations as used herein include visual inspection, detailed geologic mapping, and correlation of geology with support conditions, as well as instrumentation to provide more precise information regarding rock movements and support load. This paper describes the application of an observational program to one of the more difficult design and construction problems underground -- the excavation and support of large chambers at shallow depth in rock of variable quality. Emphasis on underground construction for subways and utilities in urban areas is bringing this problem to increased prominence. It is our intent to focus on the design and construction problems associated with such excavations and to describe observational methods which can be employed to aid in their construction. Observational programs may serve two purposes. One is to monitor the rock and support conditions in order to provide early warning of potential construction problems. Such a program should be routinely used in critical locations on major underground excavations of the type described in this paper. The program should be closely coordinated with the inspection effort and construction control. The other purpose is to provide detailed information regarding the interaction of support conditions and rock displacements to aid in development of more efficient design and construction procedures on later projects. A comparison of the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, based on pilot plant testing of waste pebble by Jacobs Engineering is presented. Estimated costs for constructing and operating a beneficiation plant utilizing dolomite flotation are given. Research to develop practical flotation processes for removing dolomite from low-grade phosphate rock has been a high priority for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The Institute funded the above pilot plant programs in 1998 and 2000. The Florida Phosphate industry currently deals with the increasing dolomite content of ore reserves by practicing selective mining. Heavy media separation plants installed at two mines to remove dolomite from pebble are not being operated. The flotation separation of dolomite from waste pebble requires that the flotation feed be ground. Grinding liberates the mineral species and produces particle sizes small enough to be floated. Only two dolomite flotation processes, the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, have been successfully demonstrated on flotation feed that has not been deslimed after grinding. Deslimed flotation feed, relative to undeslimed feed, has improved flotation performance and reduced reagent consumption. However, for the above mention processes, undeslimed ground feed increases the yield of concentrate because the phosphate desliming losses are avoided.

While the National Academy of Sciences has stated that gravimetric sampling technology for compliance purposes is adequate, research into various aspects of respirable dust control require data on many other parameters of airborne dust. These, in turn, have created the need to use many instruments, other than personal gravimetric samplers, in mine environments for dust measurement. There is a need to evaluate the performance of these instruments under conditions of potential use. As part of research in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, cascade impactors, gravimetric personal samplers and gravimetric samplers collecting dust using isokinetic sampling principles were employed for dust measurements under identical conditions in a mine airway. During the course of the experiments, 8-stage cascade impactors and gravimetric samplers drawing air isokinetically were located in the center of a mine airway at various stations. Two types of data were examined - concentration of dust and size distribution of the dust collected in the samplers. The data show that the amount of dust collected by an impactor is less than half the amount collected isokinetically. The size distributions of the dusts collected from the two instruments, though comparable, show a consistent difference in median diameters. The cause for this bias is examined. The paper presents and discusses the results of the tests, including the concentrations and size distributions obtained from the two instruments for different experimental conditions. There is a need to document the performance of various dust measuring devices in mine airflow conditions.

An expert process operation advisor system can increase plant efficiency, even in a complex, natural environment where not all elements of the production process can be measured directly. This system, develaped and tested in a Frasch process sulphur mine, monitors key process variables with extended qualitative pattern processing and provides on-line advise to the operators of sulphur production wells. An expert system framework captured common sense rules generated from years of experience obtained in the operation of a sulphur well monitoring system. The existent operating procedures were enhanced by process analysis using a qualitative modeling approach which provided extended rules for on-line classification of a well operational status and an expert alarm system. The methodology for development and implementation of the process advisor is presented in this report. Qualitative process modeling, statistical process control and heuristics were incorpomted into the process advisor resulting in a more efficient use of heat, an extended well operational life and the resulting cost savings. The computer process advisor also allowed the operator to concentrate his attention on the weak wells or wells in trouble. A process management system improved plant operation by automatically storing well data into a commercial database for operator validation. The enhanced relational data base system provided valuable and timely information for planning and decision making. The synergistic combination of on-line process analysis tools, expert control systems and database technology is shown to facilitate the flow of materials, energy and infomation in a modern plant.

INTRODUCTION The widespread use of desktop computers by an ever increasing number of people, both for personal and for business and government uses, has brought public attention to surprising stories about computer abuse. Before the advent of microcomputers in the information processing environment, hundreds of amazing misdeeds involving large computers had already been reported, most of them perpetrated by highly skilled professionals. The undreamed enlarging of microcomputer potential has steadily posed a major threat to complex mainframe computing systems, as joyful teenagers become familiar with the habit of hacking around someone else's large processing system, by means of makeshift phone communication networks, based on their intended homework for personal computers -- for the sheer fun of it. Now, the never ending capacity and speed improvement of commercially available micros has given rise to a brand new concern for society: the hazards of processing sensitive information in the powerful, but still unsafe microcomputer itself, whether or not linked to other micros or mainframe networks. This paper deals with some aspects of the problems and presents some practical hints as to enhance protection and minimize risks to sensitive and secretive information when processed on microcomputers. The physical considerations of computer security and pertinent safety precautions will not be discussed, because while essentially relevant to information protection, recommendations are well defined by processing resources suppliers and their importance is more widely recognized by users in general. Definitions and Classifications. The following definitions and classifications will be considered in this report: Information Assets: Any knowledge or information processing, storing or conveying device displayed in one's environment. It consists of two main categories: INFORMATION RESOURCES: End user's application data wherever recorded. PROCESSING RESOURCES: EDP skilled user's hardware, software, peripherals, magnetic media, communication devices, auxiliary equipment, supplies and related operational procedures. Information Protection: In a broad sense this is the set of necessary procedures to assure to the legitimate user the effective control of the operation and allow modifications of information assets, so that their physical or cognitive integrity be preserved or any unexpected loss minimized inspite of accidental occurrences or intentional actions. Classification Processes: Commonly two classification processes are used to define key terms in information protection: SENSITIVE CLASSIFICATION: Pre-defined standards for assessing the vulnerability to losses due to lack of proper processing continuity if information is destroyed, disclosed, secluded, or misused. SECRECY CLASSIFICATION: A spectrum of degrees as to the expectancy of holding exclusiveness of unique information whose destruction, disclosure, seclusion or misuse will cause a negative impact on the legitimate holder environment. Sensitive Information: Any knowledge whose destruction. disclosure. seclusion or misuse - - - implies losses to its legitimate holder. Knowledge of the amount of time material spends in a continuous mill in a closed grinding circuit is essential for circuit performance analysis and scale-up design. A convenient method for acquiring this information involves the use of pulse tracers in residence time distribution (RTD) experiments. In typical grinding circuit experiments, RTD measurements are done by injecting a pulse tracer into the mill inlet and detecting it in the circuit exit. In this article, an easy mathematical method for calculating mean residence time and the degree of mixing of material in a mill present in a closed grinding circuit is developed. There are no restrictions on the location of the tracer injection or detection points with this method. Any convenient location in the circuit can be chosen without affecting the residence time distribution measured. The analysis of impulse response data obtained from several commercial grinding circuits using this method is presented.

It is a recognized fact that a good maintenance program is a pre-requisite for minimum delay costs and maximum availability of equipment. To develop such a program and to make it effective, one must establish detailed instructions pertaining to inspections, lubrication, servicing, and/or replacing of various parts. A schedule must also be established for these maintenance checks, whether they be weekly, monthly, or whatever period is essential for the equipment. The number of tasks to be performed becomes monumental, and the administration is beyond error-free human capacity. It is for this reason that the computer must be an essential element in any efficient and economical preventive maintenance program. The evolution of a computerized maintenance program began some 18 years ago in the Mining Division of USSteel. It started with a manual system of preparing cards containing preventive maintenance instructions that had to be performed on some regular basis. We were very quickly overtaken by the massive task of administration and distribution of instruction cards to the users. The task became insurmountable as more mines were added to the system, mines that were spread over a large geographic area. It also became evident that the ability to make changes in equipment assignments and in the "what to do" instructions would require more time than had been anticipated.

After recalling the principles underlying fire-damp flow in coal and the essential part played by permeability (Darcy's law) in the intensity of flow, a few theoretical and experimental results showing the possible causes and range of variation of coal seam permeability are presented. The study of firedamp flow into gate roads and of residual gas concentrations in coals as a function of the gate road distance, shows that, in French mines, coal seams in a virgin zone have a very low permeability, but they become permeable when destressed by mine workings, in particular overlying workings. This is the case not only in the fractured zone round a mine excavation in which the gas is released, but also beyond the limit of the zone degassed by the excavation. In the floor of flat seams, upward boreholes can be used for predegassing seams that have been relaxed but not degassed, as the result of an overlying coal face. In this respect we shall describe the predrainage experiment carried out in the Marienau district of the Lorraine coalfield. Predrainage can contribute considerably to the reduction of methane emission in the ventilation of newly opened longwall faces. But to be efficient and useful predrainage should meet certain conditions.

It is possible to divide the general objectives of a company into two components: maximum expected profits and viability over time. These components are designed to maximize the companies value over time. The evaluation of a project includes both a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis and a risk analysis. The DCF analysis determines whether the project should be accepted or rejected, and the risk analysis helps to forecast possible deviations from the original estimates. However, the results of both methods do not allow for a quantitative comparison between the main objectives of the venture, and they do not resolve the issue of whether it is advisable to sacrifice immediate profits for future profits. This paper attempts to resolve this issue. The present research was carried out on mining projects with different waste-extraction schedules. Calculations were made using the US Bureau of Mines' usage-of-costs model. Russian experience in open-pit mining is reflected in this paper.
