When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease with increasing volume, while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point. However, as every ventilation instructor knows, the fact that head loss is a negative number (debit) and fan head is an energy addition (credit) is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension since the curves seem to reflect the opposite. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves- pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values - and still obtain the correct operating point. Adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at which the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure. With the standard approach, it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel ventilation network. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

Over 80% of roof falls in Illinois coal mines occur at intersections. Regular intersection geometries with sharp corners have been typically analyzed in literature. This study has analyzed stress distribution around typical field 4-way intersection geometry and compared it with similar data for regular four-way intersection geometry. These analyses were performed using 3-D numerical analyses for a typical lithology associated with No 6 coal seam in southern Illinois. Linear elastic and non-linear analyses, using Hoek-Brown failure criteria for different lithological units, were performed. The 3-D models incorporated bedding planes and pre-mining horizontal stresses. Effect of diagonal widths of the intersection and pre-mining horizontal stresses were examined due to their influence on stability. In addition to stress distribution, contours of safety factors, and displacement analyses were performed to assess stability of intersections.

Solvay Minerals, Inc. (formerly Tenneco Minerals Company) is one of five producers who use trona to produce soda ash at Green River, Wyoming. Over the years, many producers, including Solvay Minerals, extended their product lines by manufacturing other sodium products based on trona. This paper focuses on the criteria used by Solvay Minerals in the selection of new products added at its Green River, WY operations. An example is given in the selection of caustic soda production.

In an effort to lower production costs and improve profitability, mining companies have adopted a variety of management practices emphasizing productivity and cost containment. One set of practices that has been used successfully in the manufacturing and electronics industries is "world-class manufacturing" (WCM). It is applicable to mining as well. World-class manufacturing is based on the twin concepts of "just-in-time" inventory practices and total quality control. A few mining companies have implemented quality control programs that are similar to WCM in some ways and substantially different in others. This article considers the use of WCM in the processing environment, although the techniques are applicable throughout a mining operation. The article is also mindful of the variety of customers to whom mineral products are sold. Industrial minerals producers may sell brand-name products to specific customers with exacting requirements, while metals producers often sell their fungible output on a faceless commodity market. Customer requirements are emphasized in WCM, and so the range of these requirements must be recognized. World-class manufacturing In any milling process, specific goals are set for product and process characteristics - concentrate grades, minimum daily throughput, moisture content, etc. WCM has two overriding objectives: the reduction of deviation from these standards, and the reduction of variability in all aspects of the process and product. By definition, reduction of deviation also includes minimizing plant downtime for repairs or process changes. WCM plants use just-in-time inventory practices and total quality control. WCM plants use these techniques to simultaneously improve productivity and reduce costs.

The determination of the precision of reserve estimates (tonnage, grade, quantity of metal) for an entire deposit or a large block in a deposit has received some attention in the early developments of geostatistics. A general formula to derive the estimation variance of any linear combination of a large number of sample values can be found in any geostatistical textbook like David (1977) or Journel and Huijbregts (1978). A particular case of this general formula is of course the kriging of the entire deposit. However, besides the technical difficulty of dealing with many samples the application of this formula necessitates the knowledge of the covariance between any two samples in the deposit. This is quite unrealistic in the usual case of limited stationarity where the assumption of a covariance or a variogram just function of the distance vector between two samples is only valid for samples within the same area of restricted size.

The Bureau of Mines has developed PC-based tomographic computer programs for geophysical applications, and is making them available to potential users as part of a Bureau plan to facilitate the transfer of technology to industry. These programs were initially developed for predicting and monitoring the flow pattern of leach solution during in situ mining. Seismic crosshole tomography has located fractured zones of low seismic velocity and saturated zones of high seismic velocit above the natural water table. The Bureau has applied tomography also to assessing high-wall blast damage, and examining the integrity of mine-related geological structures. The tomographic programs include the straight ray pro ram BOMTOM (Bureau of Mines Tomography? and the program BOMCRATR (Bureau of Mines Curved Ray Tomographic Reconstruction) that can be run with either curved or straight rays. Both programs provide optional mathematical constraints to help counteract the nonuniqueness of reconstructions that occurs with crosshole data. They are available from the Bureau free of charge. With typical data sets, they can be run on a 386 microcomputer with 640 Kb RAM. BOMTOM was described in the Bureau Report of Investigations 9159, so this report emphasizes BOMCRATR. Curved and straight ray reconstructions using seismic field data collected while simulating injection of leach solution were compared. The curved and straight ray tomograms were quite similar even with velocity variations of more than 50 percent.

The term "rare earths" is used to designate a group of elements, Numbers 57-71 which are closely related chemically. They were called "earths" because their oxides resemble those of the alkaline earths, and the designation "rare" was originally applied because of their scarcity. Now many of these elements are known to exist in considerable quantities, and the term "Lanthanide" is applied to this group of elements, because of their similarities to lanthanum, the first element in the group. Many authorities insist on including yttrium, element Number 39, because of its extremely close association with the members of the group in nature and because of its similarity in chemical properties. It has been estimated that the combined rare earth group makes up about five-thousandth. of one percent of the Earth's crust, a higher percent than the common elements, lead, tin, zinc, arsenic, mercury, silver and gold. Cerium is by far the most abundant member comprising about half of the total amount. Yttrium, neodymium, and lanthanum are next in order; samarium, gadolinium, praseodymium, dysprosium, erbium, holmium, and ytterbium are increasingly scarce; while the elements lutetium, thulium, terbium, and europium are extremely rare. The rare earths as a group are metals, usually trivalent, forming basic oxides, and insoluble oxalates in dilute mineral acids. Their fluorides are also difficultly soluble; hence the rare earths or lanthanides may be separated, in general, from other elements by adding oxalic or hydrofluoric acid to a dilute mineral acid solution containing them. The most striking fact which characterizes these elements is the remarkable .similarity in both the physical and chemical properties of their compounds. Their main differences are in the solubilities of their salts and the basicity of their oxides, which vary between that of the alkaline earths and that of aluminum.

The Wobbler Feeder is a comparatively new materials handling and separating device. It is essentially a materials separating or scalping machine, particularly adaptable to separation of oversize particles from mine-run ore and to the separation of oversize materials from overburden, where the removal of oversize materials is necessary, as is the case in conveyor stripping. In construction, the Wobbler Feeder is simply a set of transverse bars of manganese steel, or other wear-resisting alloy steel, each having an elliptical cross-section with the major axes of adjacent bars displaced by ninety degrees so when rotating in unison, the pre-determined space between the bars remains constant.

A method has been developed in the USSR for processing the low-grade high-silica raw material by sintering the aluminacontaining mixes, which is widely used both as a principal process and in combination with the Bayer process. The process parameters were obtained on the basis of a study of interaction and equilibrium states of the individual profiles of a multi-component system Na20-A1203-Fe203-CaO-Si02 at the sintering temperatures. The compositions and melting temperatures of eutectics of the individual profiles are given. It is shown that the most easily meltable mix is one having a red mud as the main component. The variations are given of the sinter physical characteristics and recovery of the useful components with the sintering temperature. Considerations are given on selection of a sinter leaching flowsheet and directions are shown for improving a series method of processing the low-grade raw material.

There are bound to be changes with age, so I should not have been surprised or disappointed when what I had considered as high ad- ventures were much fewer and more widely scattered in the last 20 years of my long and active business life. But such adventures came until I was past 80 years of age and no one could expect more than this. Frequent visits to mines in this country and Canada and directorships in Bralorne and its subsidiaries, Homestake Mining Co., Bradley Mining Co., and the Bunker Hill Co.; and Copper Range Co. and its great new White Pine mine in Michigan, lasted far beyond the usual retirement age. The least happy part of my last two decades of active life was the death or sickness of many of my old friends. Hubert d'Autremont, whose friendship no one could replace, died suddenly in 1946. Henry Carlisle and Temple Bridgeman, for many years office associates, had heart attacks that cut down their activities far too soon. Many other less intimate friends died or became ill, but I knew that with advancing years such losses were inevitable. These memoirs would be endless if they covered all of the unusual work and associations I found in the last 20 years. So I must confine the rest of my recollections to expeditions that would have thrilled any engineer at any time. Should an arbitrary reduction factor be applied to laboratory compressive strengths when designing pillars? The answer is, as is the main contention of Peng's article, probably not. Many factors affect the strength of the material remaining in the pillar. On the other hand, outside influences will influence the strength testing results from the lab. This is not the first article, nor the last, to discuss the discrepancy between the two strengths. As was discussed in the article, actual pillar strength is affected by several factors. The two mentioned were: • The scale effect of discontinuities. How large must the pillar be so that the increase in discontinuity count with size will not decrease the strength. • Non-uniform strengths and lithologic units within the pillar. The scale effect of discontinuities is important. What size block must be tested so that the rock mass strength is actually measured? For a highly fractured rock mass, or coal with a high cleat density, this sample may be quite small. Conversely, if an unaltered, moderately jointed, quartz monzonite was examined, the sample block would likely be very large. This is the subject of ongo¬ing research. More to the point, if the tested sample is sufficiently large to model the rock mass strength, then no reductions should be made in the lab strength based on this factor alone. Non-uniform strengths and variations in lithologic units will also affect the pillar strength. I am not an expert in coal mines, having gained my experience in hard rock metal mining. These problems, though, are commonplace. However, strength sampling for pillar strength determination involves sampling material from within the lithologic unit that will form the pillar, not from pieces of material found on the floor. In addition, this sampling should cover the entire range of strengths of the material in the pillar-hard units (such as the partings described by Peng), as well as soft units. Testing results should then be included in the pillar design. Contrary to statements in Peng's article, at least one rock mass rating system (Laubscher, 1990) allows for the compositing of strong and weak units into a design rock mass strength that can be used for pillar design.

This article, first in two, discusses the safety, technology, and economic impact of eliminating safety fuse from metal and nonmetal mines. It is based on operation and manufacturer experience over the past five to 10 years. If safety fuse is eliminated, blasting accidents will decrease. There should be only limited technical impact. The economic impact will be minor for large operations, but will be significant enough for small operations that some will likely close rather than change. Most mines would probably change over, with the market absorbing the extra cost. Elimination of safety fuse would obviously have an impact on the two safety fuse manufacturers. One manufacturer produces an alternative system and would be unaffected. The other, however, will be affected if it does not change its production strategy. From the standpoint of employment and production, abolishing safety fuse will have a very minor effect on the mining industry as a whole. This article discusses the current use of initiation systems, incidence of accidents, and fuse consumption. Next month, part two describes the economic impact of eliminating safety fuse on the mining industry and manufacturers, and presents an economic analysis of the initiation systems. Introduction The objective of this study was to determine the safety, technology, and economics of eliminating safety fuse from metal and non-metal mines. There were five major tasks: • Studying initiation-related accidents from the Health and Safety Accident Center (HSAC) data file; • Visiting mines, collecting relevant data, and interviewing mine operators; • Establishing the trend in safety fuse consumption and type of users; • Corresponding with fuse manufacturers, domestic and foreign; and • Developing an idealized blasting cycle to evaluate the possible economic impact of safety fuse elimination on large and small operations. More than 450 explosives-related accident reports have been screened and analyzed by investigating HSAC files. These reports have been studied and classified according to the four initiation systems, size and type of mines, and time and frequency of accidents from 1973 through 1978. Twenty-four mining operations were visited to obtain supporting data for this study. Mine personnel were interviewed to determine attitudes about safety fuse and alternative detonating systems. This article decribes available data. It also attempts to provide information that can be used to answer such questions as: • Is the use of safety fuse (an antiquated detonation system) a major cause of mining accidents? • Are alternative systems available that could result in fewer in-juries to miners?

Since man began beneficiating ores, a limited number of factors influenced the type of treatment. The ore itself has always been a factor. The first form of concentration was probably hand sorting, and the grade of concentrate and recovery had to be considered from the start. The cost of labor as a factor in mill design did not attain importance until the period following World War I. Power was one of the cheapest commodities available, and consequently power consumption was ignored. That no longer holds true. The present work does nothing to simplify the work of the metallurgist, or designer. On the contrary it adds another element to the design considerations. And while this report concentrates on power consumption, the mill designer must take the other factors into account as well. This study is based on a compilation of data supplied by a number of Western United States copper operations, as well as information from equipment manufacturers. Although its conclusiones apply to other minerals and geographic areas, the information is more precise, when applied to similar ores. The discussion has been divided into sections covering crushing, grinding, and flotation as these are the principal power consuming functions.

With a few exceptions, the markets supplied exhibit mature growth rates. In some market sectors, technology changes have and continue to occur shifting pigment-type consumption and growth. New sources of supply will impact current businesses. New product and process developments for kaolin and calcium carbonates are continuing. Each of these issues is examined in developing a view of the future for kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America.

The is the 13th year for this column and the 12th in which the royalty data have been tabulated. There still exist some holes in the list of royalties that readers hopefully will fill. The most common mineral commodity is construction aggregates - either sand and gravel or crushed stone. In spite of their pervasive use nationwide, there are states from which the author has no information about royalties for either of these commodities. The reader can help - share information about these missing states and next year there will be fewer states without information. Severn Brown again sends helpful information from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). The PDAC Digest contained an article that distinguished between ‘net smelter return royalty' and ‘net profits royalty’ (Haase). The article also lists clauses and details that Brown suggests should be included in a net profits royalty contract.

It has already been said and written many times that the construction of tunnels in urban areas has proved more and more indispensable, if not vital. The subsequent development of tunnelling for 15 or 20 years has brought large and sometimes spectacular improvements in the fiel of execution methods. But, particularly in urban areas, the difficulties to be overcome have been and still remain very important. As a matter of fact, most of big cities, have been settled near rivers or lakes; therefore the geological nature of the subsoil is soft ground and the level of ground water is high. As a consequence, tunnelling is often faced with many well-known difficulties and dangers issued from decompression or loosening of the ground, sometimes accompanied by a lowering of the water table. This may compromise the safety of the excavation itself and of the workers, and also cause settlements which many severely damage nearby buildings or structures. This is the reason why it is always necessary to work out specially adapted methods and even to develop new ones. Mining is one of world's oldest industries. Its rich history continues into modern times. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in southeastern New Mexico is writing the next chapter in mining history. In fact, WIPP technology is the key to closure of the nuclear cycle with the disposal of nuclear waste in a deep geological repository. It might seem odd that the age-old institution of mining would be linked to the problem of nuclear waste disposal. In fact, the nuclear industry would not exist without mining. Uranium ore is mined from either underground or surface mines as the initial step in harnessing the magnificent resource of nuclear energy.
