Results of work on the development of a phenomenological model for the continuous flotation process wing short-lived radioactive tracer techniques for determining model parameters is reported. A model that incorporates a flotation first-order rate constant and a residence time distribution based on the cross-flow finite-stage (CFFS) model has been derived and investigated. The short-lived radioactive tracer techniques and the nonlinear search methods necessary to extract the model parameters have been developed. The conditions under which all the model parameters can be extracted from a single radiotracer experiment are detailed and illustrated. A micro- computer-based unique data logging system has been designed, assembled, and implemented for collecting the necessary transient radiotracer data. Results are reported for a continuous laboratory flotation process for the two systems, mica ore and coal.

The suitability of large-stone materials continues to present occasional problems in US construction. Distinctive modes of rock deterioration cracking, spalling, delaminating. disaggregating, disintegrating, and dissolving help to distinguish causes of deterioration. Design requirements, costs, and environmental factors remain critical to performance. The rating of material quality from superior hypes such as granite to marginal types such as conglomerate is too simplistic but may be useful in a preliminary way. Regardless, the market is dominated by limestone/dolomite material types because of their widespread availability. Certain tests that have been standardized are widely accepted and used for evaluating stone as riprap and armor. These tests are adapted from those used extensively for concrete aggregate; they explore the resistance of the rock to destructive processes such as abrasion, freeze-thaw, and wet-dry environmental attack. The field evaluation of the rock source is often as important as testing. Important limitations imposed by natural jointing and variations of bedding are documented in this manner. The field examination also supports the testing by estimating how much of the quarry is rep¬resented by each of the samples to be tested. Finally, quarrying and processing methods and transportation are carefully considered in regard to stone quality, average size, size gradation, and cost.

The paper reviews current mining subsidence research at The Department of Mining Engineering, University of Notting- ham. Special attention is being devoted to prediction of ground movements between the mining horizon and the surface using physical and computer-based models. The paper presented discusses linear and non- linear finite element methods and compares results with those from physical models and field observations. Special attention is focussed on the determination of the effect of caved zones on overlying and underlying geological structures. The paper presents data from comparisons with U.K. case histories.

The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties, agreeing to a decision and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. At that time, a law was passed, requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading financial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation.

A new fluid bed lime calcining plant is converting high quality limestone into quicklime at the Cape Lime facility in Vredendal, South Africa. The plant was supplied by Metso Minerals. Cape Lime, established in 1946, operates two limestone and dolomite mines in South Africa. The high quality Vredendal limestone deposits are suitable for the production of lime for water treatment and for manufacturing precipitated calcium carbonate.

Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy carried out in real time has been applied to identify surface species formed during gold leaching in chloride and thiosulfate media. Chloride ion is adsorbed prior to the gold dissolution potential, but its coverage is significantly diminished at the beginning of leaching. A gold chloride band is again observed when dissolution is rapid, together with bands characteristic of AuC14- ions in solution. With thiosulfate, a thin gold sulfide layer is formed slowly in the potential region where leaching occurs. At higher potentials, thiosulfate is oxidized to sulfur and sulfate, both products being identified by Raman spectroscopy.

The aluminous nature of the laterites capping the Minim Martap plateaus - named after two neighbouring villages - and the small nearby upland of Ngaoundal, was discovered by the Cameroon Mines and Geology Division in 1958. These deposits of worldwide importance, are located in the Ngaoundere region, some 500 km (300 miles) north-east from the port of Douala (as the crow flies). They constitute the major part of the Cameroonese mining potential. The study of the deposits and their economic development has been entrusted to SEBACAM, Societe d'Etudes des Bauxites du Cameroun, a company in which the Cameroon government participates. The bauxites originate from the transformation into laterite of lavas which covered a Precambrian basement during the Upper Cretaceous period and the Lower Tertiary era. The entire Minim Martap deposit comprises bauxite plateaus ranging in area from a few acres to several square miles. The average thickness of the bauxite layer varies from 10 metres at Minim Martap to 17 metres at Ngaoundal. The mineral constituents of the bauxite are gibbsite trihydrate, kaolinite and the usual iron and titanium oxides. Treatment of the ore does not involve any particular technical problems. Evans Industries, Inc., a management coal consultant and company was assigned to evaluate National Steel Company's coal properties in Knott and Floyd Counties, Kentucky. The results of evaluation showed large reserves of good quality, high volatile metallurgical coal contained in the Elkhorn coal beds and resulted in the formation of Beaver Creek Consolidated Coal Company. Based on results of the exploration and feasibility work, the decision was to install a coal nine, preparation plant and related facilities having a production capacity of one' and three quarter million tons per year with Evans Industries acting as Beaver Creek's management company. The recoverable tonnage assigned to the Stinson Mine is approximately forty-five million tons. This paper discusses the general arrangement of storage, conveying, loading, refuse disposal facilities and the flow sheet of the preparation plant developed by engineers of Heyl & Patterson, Inc., and Evans Industries, Inc., with emphasis on practical flexibility, sulfur reduction in all circuits, and high product yield with the minimum amount of selective mining, Three and one-half miles of railroad have been built by the Chesepeake & Ohio Railroad to service this mine.

The paper describes the exploration and development activity associated with a series of open pit gold deposits in the Laverton region of Western Australia with an aggregate resource base of 4 million tonnes at a grade of about 3 grammes per tonne. In September 1988, Hill Minerals N.L., now a wholly owned subsidiary of Ashton Mining Limited, completed the purchase of the Cork Tree Well treatment plant from Austwhim. This CIP plant had a rated capacity of 235,000 tonnes per annum, and is located within the Hill Minerals Laverton Project area. Ore is trucked by haulage contractors from each open pit mine to the central treatment plant at Cork Tree Well. Studies were completed and a plant expansion undertaken lifting throughput to 500,000 tonnes per annum. A contract was let for this expansion in November 1988, and construction completed in April 1989. Concurrent with the above project development work, heap leach metallurgical studies are being undertaken on low grade mineralisation associated with higher grade ore zones at several of the open pit mines, notably King of Creation and Craiggiemore. It is anticipated that heap leaching will provide a useful adjunct to gold production from milling higher grade ores.

Bauxite demand for the year 2000 is estimated as a function of alumina refineries' requirements and of non-metal uses for bauxite. Bauxite supply by countries or regions depends on economic factors such as investment costs, operating and transportation costs, as well as on tariffs and levies. Various scenarios are considered as a result of varying the assumptions of the model.

The accuracy of vibrating wire stress meters has been questioned by various users in the mining industry. During an in situ coal pillar study, a laboratory evaluation program was developed to determine whether stress meters could produce reliable measurements in coal. More than $0 stress meters were tested for accuracy, repeatability, effects of setting pressure, and the concept of using a single curve for interpreting the stress-meter data. The testing medium was lucite, a material with a modulus of elasticity very similar to coal. The evaluation demonstrated that the stress meters did provide repeatable measurements, but that accuracy was lacking when the recommended interpretation technique was used. Therefore, a new technique was developed that required all stress meters to be calibrated in the laboratory before use in the field. This new technique reduced the average error to typically less than 10% and, in the worst case, to below 15%.

Selective-flocculation process development generally involves single-mineral flocculation tests to identify the appropriate polymer experimental conditions for achieving the desired selectivity. Invariably the selectivity predicted on the basis of such tests is not realized when mixed-mineral tests are conducted. A systematic experimental investigation revealed that adsorption of the polymer on various substrates is critical to selecting the suitable flocculant. Simultaneously, a mathematical model was developed to predict the overall process of efficiency with a given polymer. In this paper, the results of these efforts to scientifically design a suitable selective flocculation process are presented.

Systematic planning of underground work is increasingly important in this era of advancement of rapid underground excavation techniques. The day when planning consisted of deciding which men would shovel and which would push wheelbarrows - and the answer to any problem was more men - has faded into the past. The modern underground constructor faces economic and competitive conditions which demand exacting planning, logistics and scheduling; the most efficient operating methods and equipment known; and realistic, comprehensive, analytical risk evaluation with adequate contingencies or other protection. Proper planning to cover all these elements - plus one other element: old fashioned "good luck" - will insure a successful underground project. Underground work, because of its inherent characteristics, is among the most risky types of construction. The forecasting of underground conditions is at this time only educated predictions based on sometimes faulty data, insufficient data, or no data at all. The predicted conditions of numerous operations have deviated far from the actual conditions encountered. Opportunities for error exist in profusion seldom present for surface operations. Other than this unusual risk factor, the planning for underground work does not differ greatly from planning for surface work. In planning and starting an operation there is seldom available the information or time to thoroughly analyze all unknowns. It then becomes necessary to develop a plan predicated on assumptions and trade-offs that appear to be safe and economical and to add time and cost contingencies that will provide some degree of protection. This paper discusses the results of an experimental investigation to study the release of methane in coalbeds. Absolute porosity of coal samples was first determined experimentally. Following the porosity measurement, adsorption/ desorption tests were carried out to determine the gas content of coal and the rate at which it is released. Finally, micrographs were obtained using electron microscopy and the use of a physical model, developed to explain the gas flow behavior of coal, was justified. The results of this study indicated that the measured absolute porosity of the coal sample was between 5 an 6%. This was significantly lower than the porosity estimated by comparing the micrograph area occupied by the pores and the area of observation for several micrographs, suggesting that coal has a large number of pores with a very small volume. The micrographs also clearly indicated that coal has a large interconnected network of cleats and microfractures. The adsorption/desorption experiments showed a hysteresis between the adsorption and desorption isotherms. Also, the rate of desorption was found to be strongly dependent on the particle size of the specimen.

An integrated approach to the management of underground coal mine production and cost is presented. A conceptual model for objectively analyzing an underground mine to obtain lower cost and higher productivity from operations is outlined. The model is designed to provide mine managers with a quantitative, decision-assisting methodology that can be used in formulating timely responses to fluctuations in operations. It consists of a productivity fore- cast component, routine use of current resource consumption factors, a linear programming scheduling component, a manpower loading analysis, and an inventory control component. The model is applied to an underground coal mine.

This paper reviews large dozer stripping techniques and presents results of two field studies. The first is a seven-shift study of a contour block stripping operation where a Caterpillar DII is used as the primary stripping equipment. The second is a two-shift study of two Cat DIIs dozing blast cast material ahead of a dragline operation. Surveys and continuous time studies were used to determine production rates and as a basis for forecasting unit stripping costs in both cases.

Radiation protection in uranium mines and nuclear reactors is compared, with the objective of determining if any radiation protection practices which have worked well in one area can be adapted to the other area, especially from reactors to mines since radiation protection is more highly developed in reactors. Several areas are identified where improvements can be made in radiation protection in mines, the most important being improvement in ventilation at the workplace, greater attention to special monitoring during upset conditions, and a need for a substantial increase in radiation protection staff. It is concluded that, although considerable room exists for improvement, the general approach to radiation protection presently being followed seems appropriate for the circumstances encountered in mining.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.
