The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher's boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. In Arctic surface mines, frozen ground adds to the complexity of slope stability analysis. The seasonal temperature change may thaw permafrost, and this thawed ground is often unstable. A computer program, GEODYNE, was used to simulate the movement of the thaw front in bare and insulated permafrost slopes. The simulation shows that the insulation can be used on mine slopes to prevent thawing.

Reduction of the total energy expenditure in mining and ore preparation processes was achieved by redistribution of the energy from the crushing and grinding steps to the blasting operation. Reducing the burden/spacing distance by 25% or increasing the charge length by 25% during blasting results in significant energy savings in subsequent comminution processes. The energy cost of mining and comminution is reduced by up to 10%.

The recent recession has severely impacted the performance and results of virtually all of our natural resource companies. The depressing climate continues to linger and recovery maybe sometime away. Problems remain for resource companies in the steel and petroleum industries as well as the mining business. In February, at the AIME Annual Meeting in New York, an All-Institute session presented a variety of views on the situation. A. T. Yu, chairman of ORBA Corp., Mountain Lakes, NJ, organized presentations by top management personnel of four natural resource companies. This well attended session heard management strategems for the present and views for the future. A compilation and synthesis of these presentations, gathered by Dr. Yu, are presented here for ME readers. Leading off will be William A. Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Co., Wallace, ID. Other speakers presented here include Wilfred P. Schmoe, executive vice president of Du Pont Co., Wilmington, DE; Frank W. Luerssen, chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Steel Co., Chicago, IL; and Adam H. Zimmerman, president and chief operating officer of Noranda Mines Ltd., Toronto, Ontario. First, then Griffith's remarks. Introduction The key to successfully managing a natural resource company in austere times is good management in good times. In other words, position the company during prosperous times to survive the times when the well dries up. Although we know how to manage properly, for various reasons we sometimes do not do it. We forget the lessons of history. We allow ourselves to be carried away by our egos. We fail to position our companies properly in good times. As a result, in bad times we find ourselves in deep trouble. We need constant reeducation in the things we already know. In the natural resource industries, proper positioning in good times involves becoming a low-cost producer, retaining the flexibility to pull in our horns, developing a lean and effective organization, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. Nothing improves the chance of survival during austere times as much as being able to produce at a lower cost than your competitors. In our business, that means having low-cost mines - low cost because the ore bodies are high grade or favorably located, and because they are efficiently operated. It also means recognizing the competition. The key numbers are the cost to produce an ounce of silver or gold. Nothing else really counts. And our competition is every other precious metal mine in the world. Flexibility is important when one gets stuck with a high-cost operation, often because things do not work out as we expect. It is important to be able to shut down an operation quickly and easily, without high holding costs, and without disrupting the corporate organization. A lean and mean, effective organization of competent people is vital during bad times. A company will not have that if it is not developed and maintained during good times. The mineability and coal processing costs are influenced largely by the structural and physical properties of the coal seam. The mining process involves coal cutting, pillar support, crushing, and floating. A correlation between the rank, ash content, and coal strength/stiffness is discussed. The coefficient of variability of rebound tests on the face of various coal seams are compared with those of laboratory compressive strength tests by other investigators.

Currently, decisions made by mine management are usually based on economic analysis and predetermined rating systems and tables. As financial and other constraints on mining operations become more severe, more accurate methods are required. Discrete-event simulation programs have been used successfully in many mining applications, including the simulation of open-pit, truck-and-shovel operations. However, these simulations could not model complex systems well enough to provide the detailed modeling of the haulage roads and other mining operations that is needed today. The recent advances in computing technology combined with the recent abilities of simulation to realistically simulate complex systems and visually present results in 3D have made simulation a more detailed and valuable aid in the evaluation of mining projects.

Discussion by P. Malozemoff I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years. In underground mines, it is not economic to develop reserves beyond a certain depth, so the life of initially established reserves must be limited. In these cases, it is especially important to have a good geological understanding of the orebody and its continuity. To accommodate these concepts and present proof of economic soundness for a mining enterprise, a mathematical analysis should yield a life long enough to allow exploration and the development of additional reserves that would ensure a longer mine life and a more profitable result.

Flow in steep cascades may lead to the occurrence of a nearly periodic train of waves known as slug flow. This, in turn, may result in overtopping of the channel walls and problems with energy dissipation in receiving sumps. Experimental data from an operating facility was used to extend clear water technology for predicting the occurrence of slug flow to conditions with slurry flows. A design methodology and a design chart to determine the region of steady flows is presented that will permit the design engineer to avoid slug flow in cascade systems for conveyance of slurries.

It is a great honor and pleasure for me as President of the Japanese Tunnel Association to send greetings to the 1974 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. Recently in Japan, the Japanese Tunnel Association was established as recommended by the OECD Advisory Conference on Tunneling. This is a central organization concerned with tunnel construction consisting of government authorities, universities' research institutes and construction firms as well as manufacturers of relevant materials and equipment. As I was chosen the first president of the newly-established Japanese Tunnel Association, I would like to avail myself of this opportunity to announce to you its establishment and its earnest wish to contribute to the development of tunneling technique not only in our country but also all over the world. At the same time, I cordially request your friendship and cooperation for the benefit of further development of tunneling techniques on both sides of the Pacific. At present, many tunnels are under construction in Japan. The total length of tunnels under construction for railways and highways is about 600km including the 54km Seikan Undersea Tunnel which connects the Main Island and Hokkaido. Naturally, for construction of such tunnels in Japan, we have introduced much equipment and technique from the United States and other foreign countries. Now with accumulated experience, we are confident to be able to furnish various useful information concerning tunnel construction.

With the emergence ofbiooxidation as a viable process for the pre treatment of refractory gold ores, so have the number of publica­tions on this topic increased dramatically. To a novice in the field of biooxidation, the infonnation presented is often confusing and sometimes even incorrect. Infonnation has also been published that is misleading in that it highlights a particular feature of a process that is either totally irrelevant or of no consequence to the ultimate goal viz. achieving the maximum economical gold recovery. To assist a potential user of biooxidation in evaluating the available published infonnation some guidelines or considera­tions for some of the more important aspects are given, as well as some extracts from publications that demonstrate the manner in which information has been presented.

Transformation of the measured borehole deformations induced by stress relief relies on the traditional assumption that the rock is continuous and homogeneous. Systematic and quantitative tests were carried out to check the performance of devices commonly used for measuring borehole deformations within different types of discontinuous rock conditions. Test results provide a reliable basis for considering the influence of discontinuities on in situ stress measurement and for choosing the best measuring device for a given rock type and condition.

INTRODUCTION One of the main problems in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools which, at an economically acceptable level, are capable of continuous breakage of the rock, resulting in a fragmentation suitable for a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the muck away from the tunnel face. Tools employed on tunneling machines have, so far, always been of the mechanical kind which break up the rock by a crushing and shearing action. Other methods of rock breaking are possible but, even if some of them have reached the laboratory testing stage, nearly all of them are still too "exotic" to be of any practical use in the immediate future. One must admit, however, that some highly interesting results are beginning to be reported from the USA on the use of high pressure water jets for the destruction of rock through erosion, a field pioneered in Europe(USSR and Great Britain). Mechanical breakage of the rock is effected by inducing stresses exceeding its compressive/shear strength, by loading it with a wedge of cone shaped tool, until cracks are formed and chips loosened. In order to allow the tools to act upon the rock face continuously, they are commonly shaped as rotating bodies, "roller bits" or "disc cutters", spinning freely and mounted on a revolving boring head of tunnel diameter. The thrust of the tools against the face is generally exerted in a direction which is parallel to the tunnel axis.

The chemistry of waters processed by Acid Rock Drainage water treatment plants can affect the Total Suspended Solids quality of the plant effluents. The sulfate ions in the ARD water will combine with the calcium ions from the lime that is used to adjust pH to form calcium sulfate. When the sulfate content of the waters to be treated is greater than about 1400 parts per mil­lion, the resulting calcium sulfate concentration will be approx­imately 2100 parts per million. This concentration is above the saturation point for calcium sulfate, and the salt will drop out of solution until the concentration falls below the saturation point. This "salting" phenomenon affects the total suspended solids of the treatment plant effluents by virtue of the fact that the salts will report to the filtration apparatus used for the analy­sis. This scenario is exacerbated as an effluent sample ages. Zortman Mining's water treatment plant effluent was being affected by "salting" during the spring and summer of 1995, and it seemed as though the effluents were exceeding the TSS lim­its; for no obvious reason. A testing program was initiated to verify an observation that "salting' was taking place. Treatment plant samples were collected and allowed to age, with TSS analyses being performed every day that the samples aged. Synthetic solutions were also prepared to study the "salting" phenomenon.

"Environmental audit" is a phrase that can raise the blood pressure of otherwise cool and calm corporate personnel. There is widespread concern that any organized effort to find environmental problems will do so and may result in the imposition of substantial liability against the business that engages in such activities. However, such audits can reduce rather than enhance possible liability. Relevant issues include: the role of the attorney in the process, liability risks associated with environmental audits, steps to maximize confidentiality of audit results, reporting requirements and use of audit results in a proactive manner.

Detection of the air recirculation branches within a large ventilation network may be difficult, therefore a PC computer routine has been developed to perform this task in an efficient and reliable manner. This paper describes the method illustrated using a network with complex multi-recirculation circuits. The fact that only the air flow directions and not the flow rates are used in calculations is of some interest. The air recirculation during a real mine fire is demonstrated using the PCVENT program, whose version 4.0 includes current information about any recirculation branches during network calculations or during a fire simulation. This paper also discusses some transient problems related to air recirculation, and gives examples.

In caved goaf, the friction loss of fluid head is: [h = (R'+ R/Q/ )] Q (for one-dimensional transition flow). The R' and R, which are the functions of two dimensional spaces, are calculated through an empirical formula. Then, the bulking factor and permeability are determined. It is supposed that the airflow in porous media are similar to those in tiny tubes crossing each other. Therefore, the network calculation technique can be used to tackle the field transition flow problem. A lot of case studies showed that the emission of methane in mines mainly depends on the air velocity and has little relation to air pressure. Summing up our experience and experiments, we provide an empirical formula to calculate the gas emission rate per unit area. By means of mass conservation and network calculation, the methane content distribution in steady-state is worked out. Then the dynamic change in airflows and gas content can be analyzed by the characteristic-difference method.

Innovative designs, mining, construction and reclamation practices are used at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara's Batu Hijau mine on Sumbawa Indonesia to develop a cost-effective, environmentally sound, stockpile and dumping system. The mine production rate is over 200 million tonnes per year (50 million tonnes processed with 150 million tonnes being stockpiled for processing later or placed in waste dumps). Dump development for over 150 million tonnes per year in a mountainous, tropical environment, while meeting environmental and permitting requirements is not an easy task. The effective implementation requires innovative techniques and practices from every department of the mine.

The use of stone in building construction predates written history. From the time that stone was first used, builders have constructed stone buildings predominately from local or regional materials. However, since World War II, the stone business has become increasingly global. For example, French limestone is now sold to builders in the United States, and American granite is shipped to Japan. The internationalization of architectural and construction firms has encouraged this trend. Differences among nations in trade practices, environmental demands and the level of knowledge of dimension-stone characteristics make international trading in stone a risky and potentially disastrous business for unwary participants.
