Numerous fatal/nonfatal accidents involving underground workers struck by powered machinery occur yearly, with continuous miners and roof bolters involved in the majority of these accidents. In an attempt to reduce these accidents, researchers at the the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted studies of operator interactions with the motions of continuous mining machines and roof bolter boom arms. These operators generally perform their tasks in close proximity to the equipment in confined workspaces, often employing awkward postures. Since experiments with human subjects using the actual equipment were not feasible due to safety concerns, researchers opted to conduct controlled experiments in laboratory settings. Utilizing motion capture technologies and computer simulations, the studies collected data on equipment and operator movement in a range of seam heights and working postures. This article details the results of these studies to examine operating speeds based on usage and seam height.

Results are presented that were gathered during pilot-and field-scale testing of an innovative technology, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), designed to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). The project was performed under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy through an Interagency Agreement. The MWTP is implemented by MSE, Technology Applications, Inc., located in Butte, Montana. Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a common group of anaerobic bacteria, produce hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate when supplied with sources of carbon and sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with metal ions in AMD, precipitating them as metal sulfides; the bicarbonate serves to help neutralized the drainage. Pilot-scale testing was performed within eight packed-bed reactors at a temperature representative of a field application of this technology in a northern climate, nominally 8°C. The reactors, packed with an organic substrate, were operated continuously in upflow configurations receiving AMD at a flow rate corresponding to a 5-day retention time over a test duration of 60 days. During this time, numerous physical and chemical parameters were monitored. Pilot-scale metal removal efficiencies reached 99% for zinc, 99% for aluminum, 96% for manganese, 98% for cadmium, and 96% for copper. Iron and arsenic removal was not as effective as the aforementioned metals, which was largely attributed to the high levels of iron and arsenic contaminating the organic substrate. Evidence existed that both adsorption and sulfate reduction were occurring within the reactors.

Mining is one of the oldest industrial activities. Its products are essential to modern civilization. Paradoxically, and despite a deep-rooted belief to the contrary, mining is not a lucrative industry— at least not in the aggregate. This assertion is true not only for recent years, one of the weakest periods in terms of metal prices, but also for a long time past. In 1776,Adam Smith said in The Wealth of Nations: “Of all those expensive and uncertain projects, how-ever, which bring bankruptcy upon the greater part of the people who engage in them, there is none perhaps more perfectly ruinous than the search after ... mines. It is perhaps the most disadvantageous lottery in the world... Projects of mining, instead of replacing the capital employed in them, ... commonly absorb both capital and profits.”

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

Faced with rapid growth that strained their current water supply capabilities, the Somerset Water Service in Somerset, KY decided to construct a new intake structure on the shore of Lake Cumberland. With an existing intake structure within 200', very hard limestone geology with calcite geodes, and lake level fluctuations as high as 50 ' ,this project posed many challenges. The following paper discusses how mechanical excavation techniques were used to overcome these obstacles.

Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. An AFM has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite in aqueous solutions. The AFM images show that fluorite surface becomes smoother with the adsorption of 7 × 10-5 M oleic acid solution at pH 9. Force measurement shows that fluorite is strongly positively charged in water at pH 6, suggesting a neglectable surface carbonation of fluorite. The adsorption of oleic acid at pH 9 renders fluorite more and more negatively charged. The surface morphology change of fluorite as shown by the AFM images suggests that oleic acid chemisorbs on fluorite at pH 9. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite. It may also improve the lateral polymerization of unsaturated oleic acid on fluorite as suggested by the smoother mineral surface in oleic acid solutions at an elevated temperature.

Specific energy (SE) is defined as the amount of work required to cut a unit volume of rock and is used to estimate the performance of excavation machines. Generally, the SE value is produced from full-scale or small-scale rock cutting tests. However, these tests require expensive equipment and experienced personnel, and the testing procedure is time consuming and impractical. Therefore, for estimation of SE, this study aimed to find a solution to estimate SE using rock mechanics test results and Bond work index values (BWi), which can be produced in a more practical, less time-consuming manner and with inexpensive test equipment. Small-scale rock cutting, rock mechanics and Bond work index tests were carried out on seven rock samples, which can be grouped into two different type of rocks: marble and travertine. In addition, the instantaneous cutting rates (ICR) of a selected roadheader were calculated using SE values. Rock mechanics tests performed in this study were uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), ultrasonic velocity (Vp), Schmidt rebound hardness (RL), corrected point load index (Is(50)) and density (ρ). The simple regression method was used to estimate SE from rock properties and BWi. As a result of this simple regression, a significant and highest correlation was found between SE vs. UCS and Is(50). A good correlation was found between SE vs. BTS, RL and BWi values. A moderate correlation was found between SE vs. Vp and ρ.

Pit lake chemistry depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock versus oxidizable sulfide content, and the alkalinity of recharging ground water. In this paper, we assess the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acidic Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington Pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits with the long-term pit lake chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members consisting of influent calcium bicarbonate ground water, and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporite playa lakes.

The administration came on as a strong supporter of the mining industry in April of 1982 when President Reagan delivered his long-awaited minerals policy statement. He promised to reduce America's minerals vulnerability, and called for spending billions on meeting stockpile goals for strategic minerals, opening up federal lands for mineral exploration, elimination of barriers to deep sea mining, and regulatory relief. He defended the favorable tax incentives in the Economic Recovery Act as a stimulus to private research and development that would ensure the availability of materials essential to the nation's economy and national defense. But the administration just didn't seem to get anywhere. Congress, environmentalists, and even foreign governments fought White House-proposed legislation on all fronts, delivering the ultimate coup in forcing Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Anne Burford's resignation and the subsequent EPA staff house cleaning in early 1983. Anti-Reaganites scored victory after victory against Reagan's efforts to stimulate the minerals industry. Congress was stalemated on so many mining-related issues that not much was done either for or against the industry. And the US was not to get its way on the issue of sea mining either. Most of Reagan's mineral policy objectives failed to be met. Three months after the National Materials and Minerals Program Plan was presented and the Cabinet Council on Natural Resources and the Environment was made its coordinator, the head of the Cabinet Council James Watt blamed lack of progress in reviving the mining industry and creating a better strategic stockpile on the weak economy and the House of Representatives, which repeatedly thwarted efforts to open wilderness lands to mining. Congress The 97th Congress spent much of its time saying no in 1982-to the Reagan administration's deep cuts in energy and environment programs, to major changes in clean air and water laws, to oil and gas leasing in wilderness, and to killing the Department of Energy. Most of 1982 (and 1981) was spent in heated budget disputes. Some things that did not happen: • The administration and industry failed to get changes in controls of hazardous air pollutants and sulfur dioxide emissions that are implicated in the phenomenon known as acid rain. Industry had wanted to relax requirements for new industries building in clean air regions where the air act demands prevention of significant deterioration (PSD) of air quality, and to relax requirements tightening up the regulation of emissions of hazardous air pollutants. The air battle is expected to continue on five major fronts-acid rain, hazardous air pollutants, PSD, automobile pollution, and nonattainment. • Regulatory reform legislation to overhaul the way government carries out the law died a slow death last year. Business groups and the administration said federal agencies should be required to consider cost-effective measures of reaching regulatory objectives of protecting public health, safety, and the environment. Opponents, including environmentalists, feared such action would delay, weaken, or scuttle important regulations. • Congress turned thumbs down several times on proposals for oil and gas leasing in wilderness but could not agree on any new wilderness recommendations (see The Wilderness Battle). • Congress refused to open the door to the Reagan administration's plan to raise up to $4 billion a year from sales of federal lands. The administration identified surplus and excess federal lands, mostly obsolete buildings or isolated tracts of land, that could be sold by the General Services Administration (GSA) to help out the federal budget deficit. Congress took no action. Some things that did happen: • Congress extended the Defense Production Act (DPA) for six months through March 1983 without changing the 32-year-old law. That came after it failed to resolve sharp differences over proposals for critical minerals programs. Differences concerned both the amount of funds and the scope of programs that would be authorized under the DPA's Title III. Some proponents pressed for $5 billion in funding for loan guarantees or purchase commitments to spur domestic production of minerals such as cobalt. Other members of Congress wanted smaller amounts of funding, and the Reagan administration, until about November, had opposed any use of federal funds for strategic mineral programs. These measures were certain to come up again before the DPA extension expired in March. • House supporters of the Critical Materials Act of 1982 were unable to come up with the twothirds majority needed to pass the bill, so it died on the House floor in December. The bill proposed that a council be established with responsibility for coordinating federal materials research and development. Most of us are aware of the ever increasing use of underground space. At the Advisory Conference on tunneling in Washington, D. C. in June of 1970, the demand for construction oriented tunneling during the 1970s was estimated at some 21,000 Km of length with an excavation volume of 675 million cubic meters. Of this total, 11 million cubic meters were forecast for underground parking. Though this is a small portion of the total, it is significant to note it represents a 280% increase over the previous decade. Other areas of unusual increase were railroad tunnels, 150%, and rapid transit tunnels, 160% (1). Faced with this increasing demand, the need for improved excavating efficiency is obvious. Great strides have been made. In Japan, for example, several new long tunnels have been driven parallel to old existing ones at costs as much as 50; under those of the original tunnels (1). This is an impressive achievement. I am certain, however, that we would all agree that even greater improvement is required. Great emphasis is being placed upon sophisticated systems which include among others, mechanical borers, thermal fracturing, and various methods of rock weakening and softening. However, in hard rock excavation the fact remains that the drill-blast method continues to be the most widely used system. Undoubtedly it will continue to be one of the most important techniques in the forseeable future.

For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels. And the industry must continue to develop technology that will allow coal to meet and exceed strict clean air and clean water regulations.

Many concepts concerning equipment selection, performance prediction, and evaluation of support requirements for tunnel construction in soil or hard rock tunnels cannot be extrapolated directly for application in soft rock (compressive strength between 1.0 and 35.0 MPa). Case histories for small diameter (less than 3.5 m) tunnels in Austin, Texas, are analyzed to gain insight into particular problems encountered during tunnel excavation in weak sedimentary rock, and the performance of different excavation systems are compared.

Pregrouting is an extremely important part of many rock tunneling projects. However, poor and unsatisfactory performances have been frequently recorded often with very severe consequences, technically and financially. This paper, based on personal knowledge of several relevant case histories, provides recommendations with respect to specification drafting, drilling, water pressure testing, and grouting methodologies, and cementitious grout mix design principles. Even given that the logistical challenges facing tunnel pregrouting from underground will prevent all the sophistication and innovations of contemporary dam foundation grouting being practically implemented, there is still opportunity and need to change “traditional” approaches.

For the first half of the 21st century, the United States will rely on the same mix of fuels it has for the past 50 years. Petroleum for the United States will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in stress on the gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging “piggy-back” trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

To exploit an underground mine effectively and safely, it is important to have a good understanding of the geotechnical behavior around underground excavations made in the mine. The aim of this study was to investigate the geotechnical behavior around a tunnel excavated in a metal mine in China at the three-dimensional level. Using the information available on lithology, geological structures, in-situ stress measurements, physical and mechanical properties of intact rock, discontinuities and interfaces between different rocks, a three-dimensional numerical model was built by using the 3DEC software to simulate a tunnel excavation under a high in-situ stress condition. Effect of the discontinuity network, possible intact rock and discontinuity parameter variability, representation of rock masses as discontinuum or continuum material and rock support system on the deformation, stress, failure zone and stability around the tunnel was investigated. A very good agreement was obtained between the collected field deformation monitoring results and the results of the conducted numerical stress analyses.

Continued market pressure on the US coal industry was the overriding factor affecting developments in underground mining in 1986. An oversupply of coal in the spot market kept prices low throughout the year and caused a number of operations to close their doors. Operators stepped up their efforts to improve productivity at existing operations. They made technology advances and improved their relations with employees. A continuing market-related development during 1986 was the divesting of coal properties and operations by major oil companies, which were faced with economic pressures in both the oil and coal industries. Further increases in contract mining production resulted as some larger operators were unable to compete in a tough economic environment. Longwall mining is still seen by many as the technology that will provide the necessary productivity to remain cost-effective. But the number of active faces in the US declined in 1986, as reserves were depleted and economics forced some closures. At the first Longwall USA meeting in June, much attention was placed on improved technology, as electro-hydraulic controls for roof supports gained acceptance. Other recent developments include shearer initiation of roof supports, automatic horizon control for shearer drums, and collection and storage of machine data for predicting maintenance requirements. The government and academic communities continued their research on dust control at longwall faces. Jankowski, Kissel, and Daniel, (October 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of progress in longwall dust control. And Mukherjee, Singh and Jayarman (November 1986, Mining Engineering), recommended design guidelines for improving water spray systems for dust control. Surface subsidence Increasing attention is being given to surface subsidence. This is primarily because of longwall mining and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Improved methods of prediction of surface subsidence, especially computerized methods, are being continually developed. Mining engineering faculty at major universities such as Virginia are helping develop public policy and regulations concerning subsidence. As part of this effort, Unrug and Johnson identified major subsidence areas of Western Kentucky. Peng and Chen (February 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of history and research of surface subsidence. And Elifrits and Aughenbaugh, (February 1986, Mining Engineering), discussed effects of moisture variations and overburden on subsidence. This research culminated in a Symposium on Surface Subsi¬dence at the SME 1986 Fall Meeting in St. Louis and the 2nd Workshop on Surface Subsidence at West Virginia University. Ground control in coal mining continued to be an item of major research interest. Some 30 papers were presented at the 5th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining at West Virginia University. And six sessions were related to coal mining at the 27th US Symposium on Rock Mechanics at the University of Alabama. At the 4th Annual Workshop, Generic Mineral Technology Center, Mine Systems Design and Ground Control emphasized efforts of the participating universities to improve ground control. Peng and Chiang summarized results of studying support capacity and roof behavior with longwall shield supports. And Unrug, Johnson, and Nandy analyzed the process of deterioration of shale roof in a case study of a room-and-pillar coal mine. The importance of geologic conditions in determining mining productivity is receiving increased attention in coal mine design in the US. Mullenex related, through case studies, the benefits to be derived through analyzing the depositional system of coalbeds as an integral part of mine design. Improved technology in this area was related by Lloyd, Semborski, and Stolarczyk. They discussed a case study of using radio imaging to indicate coal-seam discontinuities in advance of mining. Improved coal mining technology in general is being researched more heavily, to help improve US coal competitiveness. However, much of this research and development process has yet to be widely implemented. Equipment manufacturers are devoting more resources to development of continuous-haulage systems, mobile roof-supports, mine-monitoring systems, and predictive-maintenance systems using computers to extract machine data.

The microstructures and kinetics of a rich iron ore ( TFe = 65.84%) of Na Rua mine, Vietnam, used for the iron production were investigated in this study. Thermal behaviors of iron ores were well-examined by heating microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. After being pelletized and then oxidatively fired at 500–1200 °C for 2 h, the pellets fired at 1200 °C (P1200) displayed a hard and dense structure with a decent compressive strength of 317.9 kg/pellet whereas those fired at 500 °C (P500) had a soft and spongy structure. The reduction of iron pellets conducted in a flow of a 60–100% CO2/ Ar gas mixture at 900–1100 °C showed significantly higher efficiency than the reduction using coal. The spongy pellets showed superior performance for the reduction in the CO/Ar gas mixture compared to the dense ones, compatible with the production of sponge iron. When mixed with an amount of coal, P1200 designed for iron production in the blast furnace demonstrated an impressive reduction activity compared to P500 and previous studies. The kinetics of pellet reduction was determined by the diffusion of substances through the solid product layers having the mathematical model of 1 − 2 3 f − (1 − f )2∕3 = kt . The microstructures of pellets during the oxidative firing and reduction were also examined by X-ray diffractometry; scanning electronic microscopy; energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy; and Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller method.

The Yanacocha Project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone (1976). Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits and has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru's ample mineral resources. Construction began on August 1, 1992 and after twelve months of arduous work, the first gold bar was poured on August 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo mine. In 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 81,000 ounces of gold and 304,000 ounces in 1994 (40% above budget). Production is expected to exceed 500,000 ounces in 1995 with the start-up of operations in the Maqui Maqui mine. This paper presents a summary of MYSA's experiences during its first two years of operations in the areas of mining, ore processing, environmental protection, loss control and community assistance. The paper also shows that MYSA's successes are not only due to the richness of the deposit, but also to the combination of a number of factors basic to the project's success, such as: an economic policy favoring investment in Peru, the availability of highly qualified local personnel to facilitate the transfer of technology from the United States and the desire and determination of the partners to carry the project forward in an initial atmosphere of uncertainty and terrorism.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of three operating cave mines at the Grasberg mine complex. The DMLZ is situated in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS). It is set 500 m below the operating DOZ mine and located approximately 1,500 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel caving operations. Initial undercutting of the DMLZ commenced in the second half of 2015 and has expanded to more than 120,000 m2. High pre-mining stresses and the changes associated with caving, combined with a strong and brittle rock mass, led to significant seismicity and rock bursting. Stress and seismic management are the main challenges for the operation and have evolved significantly from initial undercutting to the present. Considerable amounts of empirical data associated with ground response have been collected, evaluated and combined with historical lessons learned from the Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) and Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mines, which are located within the EESS. This has provided an improved understanding of how the various geological, geotechnical and mine design criteria relate to one another. Additionally, the information has allowed for the development and implementation of improved strategies for stress and seismic management in the DMLZ. This paper describes how these learnings have driven changes in mine geometry, layout, and support systems. Through comprehensive monitoring and detailed inspections, positive changes have been seen in the ground response, leading to an increase in footprint reliability and accelerated cave growth. The paper summarizes the key learnings at the DMLZ regarding stress and seismic management as well as the positive improvements towards sustained and safe caving operations in the DMLZ.
