Hydro-Jex® is a new enhanced method for heap leach treatment with significantly higher mineral recovery. In this case study at the Los Filos Mine in Mexico, the Hydro-Jex operation is evaluated for heap leach stability. This is pursued by numerical modeling of the heap leach pad stability and well monitoring of the phreatic surface before and after the Hydro-Jex operation. Experimental and numerical results both indicate an improvement in mineral processing under the influence of Hydro-Jex. Numerical results show an insignificant decrease and a significant increase in stability during and after Hydro-Jex injection application, respectively. The integrity of the liner is maintained in both cases. The zonal injection pressure, operationally below the overburden pressure, is found to be negligible compared with the dimensionality of the heap, and stability of the structure is not exposed to any significant risk, even up to 25%above overburden pressure. Furthermore, heap leach factor of safety increases after Hydro-Jex application. This is attributed to breakdown of the water solution build-up and thus a decrease in the phreatic surface depth below the top of the pad. It is suggested that injection wells be drilled, based on thorough geophysical data, in locations where overcompaction of heap material results in water solution build-up and pore pressure enhancement. Compared with traditional heap leaching, the Hydro-Jex technique not only expedites mineral processing by increasing chemical kinetics extraction but also increases the stability of the heap by unclogging drains.

This paper presents a resume and status report: of mining technology appropriate to commercial oil shale development in the United States today. The nature and extent of oil shale in Colorado and Utah are discussed. A look at most of the prominent activities now underway emphasizes the questions "where are we now?" and "where are we going?" Various alternate mining methods are reviewed and a bibliography of oil shale mining is included.

Once completed, the Montreal Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) will be the fourth largest automated transportation system in the world. The REM represents construction costs of approximately 7.0 billion Canadian dollars. The project consists of 67 km of twin tracks over four branches connected to downtown Montreal. The project includes 26 stations with 3 underground stations in downtown Montreal. One of the underground stations was built using the NATM method with thin permanent shotcrete initial and final liners separated by a sprayed on waterproofing membrane. The 2 other underground stations were built with the cut and cover approach including one using permanent secant pile wall with permanent walers and struts as the support of excavation and the final perimeter wall of the station. The project also includes the rehabilitation and enlargement of the Mont Royal Tunnel. This 100-year-old double track tunnel is about 5 km long. The REM also consists of 3.6 km new TBM tunnel connecting downtown to the Montreal International Airport through saturated soft ground and karstic rock. By the time of RETC, the construction of REM underground structures will be completed. This paper presents the design and construction aspects of the underground structures of this mega project.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

Unfortunately, mining and mining accidents have gone hand-in-hand since man first started to extract ore from the ground. In the first published treatise on mining, De Re Metallica, Georgius Agricola (1556) stated that cold, water, dust, stagnant and foul air, roof falls, falls from ladders and demons all caused injury and death in the mines of his day. Although demons are no longer considered a cause of accidents in modern mining, the other factors remain with us still. The United States government started keeping track of fatalities with the establishment of the federal Bureau of Mines in 1910. Successor agencies, such as the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) continue to track fatalities today. Looking at the records, it can be seen that coal mine fatalities dropped from 2821 in 1910 to only 27 in 2004. The reduction in fatalities and injuries didn’t “just happen.” It took concentrated effort from the entire mining industry: miners, supervisors, safety officials, mining inspectors and mining researchers. But first, specific hazards must be identified before they can be corrected. In past, coal mining accidents have been analyzed by: type (roof fall, electrical, etc), mine attribute (location, seam height, etc.), and aspects of the mineworker (work experience, job classification, etc). Much of this research helped to direct the industry’s attention to where additional vigilance and safety training was needed. No doubt this directed effort has led, at least in part, to the decrease in coal mining fatalities. This paper takes a novel look at coal mining fatalities: it examines the risk of fatalities based on how long the mine has been open.

In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

Introduction Though temporarily shutdown due to the depressed economy, the Henderson mine is a large underground molybdenite producer, using a continuous panel-caving mining system. The location of the ore body requires access from the surface through three shafts, the collars of which are located about 3.15 km (10,350 ft) above sea level. At this altitude, normal temperatures are such that heat must be added to intake-ventilation air for about half of each year. This prevents ice from building up in the intake shafts, waterlines from freezing underground, employee discomfort, and equipment-related problems such as pneumatic rock drill icing and cold starting of diesel engines. Because of topographic and environmental constraints, the Henderson mill and concentrator are located 24 km (15 miles) from the mine, on the west side of the Continental Divide. All ore from the mine is transported to the mill by an electrified rail haulage system, with 15.4 km (9.6 miles) of the trip being underground through a double-track tunnel. A shaft at the midpoint of the tunnel exhausts air drawn from the mine and from the portal that is at an elevation of 2.7 km (8,950 ft). Intake air at the portal must be heated for part of the year to prevent ice buildup. Mine Ventilation System The mine ventilation system uses three sources of fresh air and two exhausts. The primary freshair intake is No. 3 shaft. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 698 m (2,291 ft). An airflow of 755 m3/s (1.6 mil¬lion cfm) is supplied to this shaft by two vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) fans on the surface. The air is distributed within the mine by means of fresh-air distribution levels connected to production and development levels by raises. A secondary source of fresh air to the mine is provided by No. 2 shaft, the primary man and material access. This shaft is concrete lined to a diameter of 8.5 m (28 ft) for a total depth of 946 m (3,105 ft). Downcast airflow is induced by a pressure differential produced by the fans in the system such that net intake and exhaust volumes are equal. The No. 2 shaft flow of 165 m3/s (350,000 cfm) enters the mine network from the production and haulage levels. Exhaust air is moved from the various working levels through connecting raises to exhaust col¬lection levels that return it to No. 1 shaft. No. 1 shaft is the primary mine exhaust. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 788 m (2,584 ft). Three vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) exhaust fans are located at the collar of No. 1 shaft, producing a flow of 850 m3/s (1.8 million cfm). In addition, an airflow of 71 m3/s (150,000 cfm) from the intake distribution level is exhausted via the haulage tunnel, by means of No. 4 shaft located midway in the tunnel. The Cutoff grade optimization is very critical to the open pit production scheduling. In case of single mineral deposits, algorithms have been developed for determining cutoff grade policy that maximizes the net present value (NPV) of yearly cash flows. For deter-mining the cutoff grade policy for projects with two minerals including stockpiles the problem becomes much more complex. The purpose of this paper is to present fundamentals of a generalized cutoff grade optimization algorithm that will maximize the NPV of a project subject to mining, milling, and marketing constraints. Benefits of the methodology developed are demonstrated on three different case studies.

Correct face pressure is critical to safe operation of a closed face TBM. If inadequate face pressure is applied, this will lead to excessive ground movement, and may result in collapse of the tunnel face. Face pressure calculations are performed manually every few meters along the tunnel alignment. With the application of a 3D ground model, ground profile information can be extracted for automatic computation. This will significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy and is adaptable to changes in design parameters. This paper will discuss the development of automatic computation techniques in extracting information from a 3D ground model.

"The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity on the size of metallic iron particles in coal-based reduction products of an oolitic iron ore. The particle size distribution behavior (i.e., cumulative passing percentage and mean size of metallic iron particles) during reduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the particle size distribution of metallic iron particles was strongly influenced by reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity. The cumulative passing percentage and mean size significantly increased with reduction temperature and time in the entire range of the experiments. All curves of cumulative passing percentage versus particle size under different conditions demonstrated a similar trend (continuous increase). The size distribution parameters and mean size slightly increased with increasing binary basicity and significantly decreased when the binary basicity exceeded 1.0. The size of metallic iron particles could be controlled by adjusting the reduction conditions during coal-based reduction.IntroductionThe increasing demand for iron ore coupled with diminishing high-grade iron ore reserves has resulted in the urgent need for innovative technologies in order to use refractory iron ores. Oolitic iron ore is a typical refractory iron ore with tremendous abundance globally. Based on published literature, oolitic iron ore reserves are approximately 140 million tons in Europe, 10 billion tons in China and 66 million tons in Pakistan (Kazmi and Abbas, 2001; Wu et al., 2011; Yu and Qi, 2011; Sun et al., 2013a). Therefore, the efficient exploration and use of oolitic iron ore resources can play a significant role in easing the mineral resource crisis in the iron and steel industry. However, oolitic iron ore cannot be effectively upgraded by traditional beneficiation methods due to its mineralogical characteristics (e.g., low grade of iron, poor liberation of iron minerals and high phosphorus content) (Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b).Researchers recently proposed coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation to recover iron from refractory iron ores (especially oolitic iron ore) and a certain degree of breakthrough was achieved in both theory and practice. In this technology, iron minerals in the ore are directly reduced by coal to metallic iron, which grows into particles of different sizes. After comminution and liberation, metallic iron is concentrated by magnetic separation (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009; Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b; Li et al., 2011c; Gao et al., 2013). Sun et al. and Gao et al. used this technology to examine the recovery of iron from oolitic and Bayan Obo iron ores, respectively (Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Li et al., 2011c). Metallic iron powder with more than 90% iron content was obtained as the final product, which could be used directly in steel production."

The Moris gold deposit resides in a massive ridge-forming sulfide-poor epithermal quartz and calcite vein system and consists of a mineable reserve of four million tons of 2.1gm Au/ton. Post-mineral normal faulting along the hanging wall of the main fissure has caused a hogback-like exposure of the vein, allowing for inexpensive opencut mining. The vein formed between pre-Cretaceous(?) phyllitic clastic sedimentary units in the footwall and Tertiary andesitic volcanic rocks in the hanging wall. Part of the ore reserve is hosted in a Tertiary conglomerate that rests unconformably atop the phyllitic footwall sequence. The original unoxidized vein material contained substantially less than 1 gram Au/ton. A four-fold upgrading of gold occurred by enrichment when gold recrystallization took place in the electric fields of oxidizing pyrite cubes.

Longwall mine instrumentation for measuring abutment stress distribution, mining induced immediate roof stress change and deformation, and primary/secondary support loads and deformations provides critical guidance for the design of gateroad chain pillars and roof support. Field measurement results are also recognized as the best way to calibrate numerical models that have been used to study the failure and support mechanisms. International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) started in 1981 and since then, there were 26 papers published in the proceedings discussing the stress and load measurements as the face advanced using various field instrumentation techniques. The focus of this paper is on summarizing the analyses of the data published in these papers. Stress/load change monitoring included the following categories: gateroad chain pillar, abutment pressure, bolt load, and pre-driven recovery room. The data shows that the magnitude of stress changes as the face advances varies considerably from panel to panel and mine to mine. However, regardless of types of stress changes, pillar stress, abutment pressure, and bolt load, there exists a rough trend of stress increase as the face advances, generally consisting of three stages, i.e., stress/load (1) initially increases steady or slowly, (2) increases rapidly, and (3) increases reaching the peaks and dropping down slowly or sharply. The stress/load increases start earlier during the second panel mining and are larger than the first panel mining. This review makes it easy for the interested persons to find valuable data for other similar projects.

"Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."

Extractions of minerals from Searles Lake brines have taken place since 1873. Early operations were for borax and raw trona found on the surface, expanded after 1914 to include potash, salt cake, and soda ash. A new soda ash plant now in operation will double area production. The evaporite beds were formed by desiccation of Eastern Sierra runoff. The resulting series of brine-bearing salt beds supply the fluids necessary to feed the area chemical plants. Production methods include evaporation and crystallization for potash, borax, and salt cake; carbonation of brine to recover soda ash; and organic extraction of borax.

Although out of the ordinary, MINING ENGINEERING is pleased to present a few photographs that typify Western US mining activity during WWII. The photographs, taken by R.G. Zellers at Colorado mining operations between 1942 and 1946, were primarily intended for equipment manufacturers. The pictures capture scenes of hardworking miners during a time when output was essential to fuel a wartime effort. In addition to providing a rare opportunity to step back 40 years and view the equipment and activity common at the time, Zellers' skill with photo composition and his ability to obtain clarity in dimly lit underground operations gives viewers an acute awareness of the dampness and dirt of the mines, and a sense for the miners' limited working space.

Adverse geological condition is a major factor which makes construction difficulty in tunneling. But if it is predicted and tunnel support is made efficiently in time, the above difficulty can be reduced. It is necessary to develop one or several effective and economical geological methods for prediction of tunnel geology while expensive and time-consuming instruments are used. This paper reviews and proposes several geological methods for prediction of fault, seam, contact zone, and groundwater inrush. These methods have been proved to be effective and economical in tunneling practice in China.

The department of the Interior is a federation or holding company of several fiercely independent bureaus which have either jurisdiction or expertise - or both - in a wide range of environmental fields. Each bureau is an advocate for its own concerns and an enforcer of its own mandates. This can be confusing to the company operating in the field. I will try to explain our concerns, help you see where we are "coming from," and give you some insight as to how we can help you. Other speakers have stressed the environmental concerns and site selection factors for uranium wastes so I will focus on the concerns of the Department of the Interior and some of the assistance we can give you in this area People are more aware and more concerned about environmental factors now than they used to be. Thus the past decade has brought about an evolution in both siting and design of uranium mill tailings ponds. Site selection criteria used to be simple - find a tract of land as near to the ore supply as possible with enough space and suitable topography for the expected volume of wastes. Site selections in the past have left a legacy of problems to be corrected - radioactive wastes on stream banks and in floodplains, mill wastes in and near established communities, and unprotected wastes subject to constant erosion. This is no longer acceptable environmentally or socially to a newly aware and concerned public. (Series of 30-35 slides showing uranium mine and mill wastes in Western United States. Deep coal mines with strong roof and floor rock frequently encounter face and rib bursts. The burst problem is becoming more severe as mining depth increases, prompting efforts to relieve high stress areas ahead of mining. Successful stress relief reduces the occurrence of uncontrolled coal bursts. This report by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, presents a review of the most widely used methods to detect and destress high stress zones along coal faces. Stress-related burst problems and destressing efforts at a cooperating mine were investigated. Laboratory tests of the drilling yield method for high stress detection were conducted to determine the correlation between the volume of cuttings obtained and the magnitude of the applied stress at various confining pressures. A three- dimensional, multiple-seam computer modeling program, "MULSIM?, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of stress relief methods. Modeling results and guidelines for destressing are presented. Results indicate that dangerously high stress areas can be controlled by either proper planning or destressing. Proper mine planning guidelines and destressing methods such as volley firing, hydraulic fracturing, and auger drilling are discussed.
