A new hydrometallurgical process has been developed to recover copper from sulfide ores. Copper is leached in a staged reactor system utilizing nitric and sulfuric acids at 105°C. Iron is removed from the pregnant liquor as a jarosite and cathode copper is electrowon directly from the purified pregnant liquor. The spent electrolyte is recycled. Nitrogen oxides evolved from the leach are reconverted to nitric acid and are also recycled. Sulfur is rejected as S°, jarosite and gypsum. The process is highly versatile and can recover precious metals, molybdenum and zinc, when these elements are present. Continuous, integrated, semi-pilot plant operations using chalcopyrite ores demonstrated 99% copper leaching and production of cathode grade copper. Economic evaluation shows that the process is competitive with pyrometallurgical and other hydrometallurgical processes.

South Bulga is a new longwall operation located in the Hunter Valley coal-mining region in Southeastern Australia. The mine’s objective is to achieve productivity levels significantly higher than the current industry average. From the day longwall production began, South Bulga’s output was below both budget and industry expectations, primarily because of the poor performance of the conveyor system. In the past, conveyor systems have been seen as an adjunct to the mine plan, not as an integral part. At past production levels, this approach may have been acceptable. In today’s mining operations, the conveyor system must be treated as integral and vital to the mining operation. The conveyor system is analogous to the vascular or circulatory system of the human body. Of itself, the system does not do anything, but if it is not functioning satisfactorily, the mine cannot operate.

High-angle in-pit conveying is an idea that is being seriously studied by a number of important mining companies in North America. Its application in coal, iron ore, and copper mining is expected to reduce mine operating costs considerably compared with the conventional discontinuous methods, such as truck haulage, which are fuel, labor, and maintenance intensive. Therefore, a mine introducing high-angle in-pit conveyors will gain a competitive advantage over mines which continue to use conventional haulage. While the capital outlay for in-pit conveyor systems obviously varies depending on pit depth, the angle of incline, and the capacity required, it generally will not exceed that of truck haulage when all Factors are taken into consideration. These factors include the cost of excavation, as measured in relation to the volume of minerals mined, the cost of building truck ramps and roads, and the capital outlay for the trucks and maintenance facilities. In many cases, in Fact, the capital outlay will be less than for truck haulage. This cost advantage will best be realized by new mines, whereas in existing producing mines the switch from truck haulage may involve the abandonment of a substantial capital asset.

The Grand Isle Sulphur Mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The depth of water at this location is about 50 feet. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases which were originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Company by the State of Louisiana, and which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the Department of the Interior of the United States, pursuant to Section 6(b) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Company acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Company the sulphur rights underlying the tracts. This assignment was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on July 12, 1957. The Director, United States Geological Survey, approved Freeport Sulphur Company as Operator on July 31, 1957. Actual design began in September 1956; the first structural contract was let December 15, 1957, and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction will be completed and production started in early 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30,- 000,000, of which $8,000,000 is the extra cost for being in the Gulf of Mexico.

A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores has been developed which involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent extraction plant and operating conditions are made.

Bulk and differential laboratory flotation tests have been carried out using a synthetic mixture of chalcopyrite and molybdenum ore. In addition to boiling and roasting, six different depressants are tested so that the best conditions of separation can be identified. These reagents include sodium cyanide with and without zinc sulfate, potassium ferrocyanide, sodium hydrosulfide, arsenic Noke's reagent, and sodium sulfide. The data indicate that most of these reagents are effective chalcopyrite depressants. However, sodium hydrosul fide can be used preferably if economic, operational, and environmental factors are taken into consideration.

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. INTRODUCTION The goal of any development drilling program is the drilling of the exact number of holes necessary to adequately determine grade and dimensions of an orebody, no more and no less. This cost of development drilling represents a large part of the total development budget. Any technique which eliminates unnecessary drilling costs produces beneficial results, both to the company and to the person who can claim the savings. This high development cost factor has produced a quantity of research to develop techniques, for efficient control of drilling programs. Recent mining literature is full of articles describing methods for measuring and increasing the effectiveness of these expensive projects. The method described in this paper was developed during the latter part of a major development drilling project at the Christmas Mine of Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company in Gila County, Arizona. It was used to test the need for drilling individual holes but could be expanded to control an entire project. This technique was used at Christmas as a practical means for evaluating adequacy of drilling on an individual hole basis, and it was possible to eliminate several previously approved holes. Application of this method involves an evaluation of geological conditions present and a good bit of common sense. Projects involving large disseminated, rather homogeneous orebodies of the porphyry-copper type would be the most likely candidate for application of the technique. Discontinuous orebodies would not be amenable to this technique. The method is based on the measurement of the linear correlation between the spatial distribution of two sets of data. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is used. This is a standard statistic commonly used to measure linear correlation between two sets of data. The statistical significance of the correlation coefficient at a 95% confidence level is the main criterion for controlling the project. For purposes of reference we will call our technique the "correlation method" in this paper.

"Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

The highly competitive nature of the international iron ore market has forced producers to improve the quality of their pellets. The demand for low acid pellets suitable for direct reduction has resulted in an increase in the number of plants utilizing reverse froth flotation for silica reduction. Column flotation is being favoured for this service due to the low capital and operating cost of the equipment, as well as improved metallurgical performance when compared to conventional flotation cells. This paper describes the benefits of column flotation and discusses some important aspects of circuit design.

G.A. Carmody and L.B. Anderson We wish to comment on the paper by G.W. Heunisch (MINING ENGINEERING, January 1987), which raised several important points regarding treatment of acidic waste waters. This paper confirms, in part, tests carried out by Allyn Corp. Allyn is the manufacturer of the proprietary product Alka-Ment, one of the materials that Heunisch tested. The first point is the extreme sensitivity of the sedimentation rate on the nature of the treatment material used. This apparently results from differences in nucleation of the metal hydroxides, and is consistently higher for Alka-Ment. This decreased sludge volume is also observed when Alka-Ment is combined with flocculants, such as organic polymers (see Table 1). Our second point is to emphasize that Heunisch's work shows how dependent the sludge volume is on pH. It is common practice to overtreat AMD by raising pH to 9 or 10. This practice, in addition to being wasteful of material, actually decreases the density of the resulting sludge, probably by creating charged particles that do not readily coalesce. When treating with Alka-Ment, we recommend that the treatment be monitored by testing both pH and dissolved iron. For both tests, it is important to allow adequate time to elapse between treatment and measurement, so that dissolution of alkali, aerobic oxidation of iron, and precipitation of the metal hydroxides are nearly complete. Our tests have indicated that from 30 minutes to one hour is commonly required. Only in this way can a minimum pH be attained, with adequate treatment, denser sludge, and lower treatment rates achieved. Thirdly, Heunisch correctly recognizes that ASTM titration of Alka-Ment does not reflect the true treatment value available in a unit of Alka-Ment. Our work at Allyn indicates this is a most important consideration when evaluating various materials for the treatment of acidic waste waters. While we were unaware of Mr. Heunisch's work, we welcome comparisons between Alka-Ment and any competitive products readily available for field use. Allyn has hundreds of hours of laboratory and field data we are ready to share with interested parties treating acidic waste water.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

This study evaluated the effects of collector type amide-amine compared with those of conventional etheramine acetate (both cationic collectors) on the surface properties of quartz and hematite. An examination of certain properties of the reagents indicated that the new collector amide-amine has CMC (critical micelle concentration) and pKa values (100 mg/L and 8.2, respectively) significantly lower than those of etheramine (800 mg/L and 9.4, respectively). Microflotation tests showed that the recoveries of quartz with amide-amine in all the concentrations tested were higher than those with etheramine. This is attributed to its lower CMC and pKa values. The selectivity window between quartz and hematite flotation using amideamine was higher at pH 10.5 (approximately 80% for 5 mg/L). Therefore, the use of starch is not necessary in siliceous itabirite flotation by amide–amine collector. Zeta potential measurements and infrared spectra reveal that the adsorption of amide-amine collector on quartz surface occurs mainly by electrostatic attraction. Considering the better collectability of amide-amine for quartz flotation and lower adsorption affinity for hematite surface than etheramine, the amide-amine is a promising collector to be used in reversal iron ore flotation.

An overview of the evolution of computerized mine planning and design has been given, emphasizing the need for a knowledge-based system for planning and design of underground coal mines. An outline for the development methodology and procedure has been provided. Problem structuring guidelines have been used to incorporate intelligence and integration to the design modules. A skeletal model for a mine planning and design expert system has been prescribed, and the development process has been documented in detail. A feasibility prototype has been developed to test the structure of the skeletal model and to ensure completeness of the design process. The feasibility prototype development and its contribution toward proto typing has been addressed in this paper. At present, prototype development is underway. The prototype is expected to be avail-able for testing and implementation in early 1991.

Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. Nickeliferous laterites were characterized by particle size analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Results showed that the laterites consist mainly of nickel-substituted lizardite with cobble-like morphology and traces amounts of magnetite and phlogopite. As fluoride ions can react with silicon in the lizardite crystal structure and form metal-fluoride complexes, as well as increase the equilibrium constant of the lizardite dissolution in acid solution dramatically, the addition of minor fluoride salts (0.2wt.% NaF) gave a markedly enhanced metal extraction rate (Ni 81.7% and Co 52.3%) under the experi-mental conditions of particle size d50= 25 µm, 10% (v/v) H2SO4, reaction time 2 h, reaction temperature 90°C, liquid-to-solid ratio 3 mL g-1 and stirring at 500 rpm compared with H2SO4 alone (Ni 69.6% and Co 30.8%).

In 1958, the coal industry, through Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the electric utility industry, through the Edison Electric Institute and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, initiated a joint program to study coal pyrite and its removal as a means of lowering the sulfur content of steam coals. It was assumed that significant amounts of pyrite often remained in washed steam coal not because available systems for coal cleaning were inadequate, but because the pyrite was small and widely disseminated, During the first two years, samples of coal were examined petrographically to determine the size, association, and mode of occurrence of the pyrite in the raw coal and in the products of laboratory separation, Samples of coal were also pulverized in different equipment to determine how effectively pyrite was released by pulverization and if the mode of pulverization affected the liberation of pyrite. From these studies, the following tentative conclusions were made (1 ): 1. Much of the coal pyrite is within a 250-70 micron size range, and therefore is too small to be removed by conventional coal cleaning, but relatively large when compared to the size of coal as pulverized for combustion in large boilers. 2. The degree of pyrite liberation is mainly determined by the size of the product and not by the type of crusher. 3. For improved pyrite removal, the coal should be cleaned during or after pulverization at the power station.

The indirect method of drying coal fines is applied to filter cakes which ordinarily contain 22 to 30% moisture and are not readily transportable. The "Thermal Dryer", which operates on the mass transfer principle, has found wide use in coal preparation plants. The thermal dryer is penalized in operation by the necessity of adding coarse coal to the wet fines before entering the dryer body in order to produce a permeable bed, and thus enable hot gases to uniformly contact the wet mass. The ratio of coarse coal to fines varies from 2:1 to as much as 4:1, depending on the average particle size, moisture, and ash content of the fines.

The development of a metallurgical project is a business venture rather than a technical exercise, and its real objective is to obtain the maximum return on investment consistent with the limitations imposed by company policy and the requirements of society. Demand for profits is the driving force for technical advances and naturally leads to improvements in processes, equipment and plant designs. In the mineral dressing field there have been virtually no new processes developed since the introduction of flotation, and the steady erosion of profits by inflation has been offset only by increasing equipment size. Unfortunately, in recent years, plant designers have not always utilized the largest equipment or the opportunities for functional and economic design presented by the development of larger equipment. Lower cost plants can be developed providing that unrealistic restraints arising from the prejudice of past practices are avoided. As an illustration of this premise, three different approaches were taken toward the design of a clearly delineated but hypothetical copper concentrator of 20, 000 tons per day capacity. While the same flowsheet was used in each case, designs were produced for a conventional plant, an alternate using the largest available equipment, and a third scheme utilizing large equipment and the most functional design which could be developed, including features derived from many plants in many different industries. Capital costs were developed for the three separate designs based on a location in the southwestern United States. Ancillary facilities were identical in each case and included a mine truck shop, a maintenance shop, a general office, and a nominal starter dam for tailings disposal within 5000 feet of the plant. Water supply within 1000 feet of the plant, and power furnished to the property boundary has been assumed in each case. The flowsheet of the three plants is shown in Figure 1 and represents the treatment of a typical sulfide copper ore by three- stage crushing followed by single-stage ball milling. Concentration is by flotation roughing and scavenging followed by regrinding of the concentrates and two stages of cleaning.

INTRODUCTION Sublevel long-hole stoping is a large tonnage stoping method that may be used when there is a fairly com¬petent straight vein and the walls will stand with little support. It is a method that lends itself to a high degree of mechanization. Two variations of the method are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 illustrates development typical for a 3-m (10-ft) wide vein. Initial development is by a lower haulageway, which may be either track or trackless. A two-compartment raise is driven in the footwall of the vein. At about 12 m (40 ft) above the main head¬ing, a footwall scram is driven and pockets through the vein are cut on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers. Each of the sub¬level blocks selected in this example is 45.7 m (150 ft) long by 12 m (40 ft) high. Stoping starts at the slot raises at stope endlines and retreats to the timbered raise. This retreat sequence starts on the lowest sublevel and the opening cut is blasted into the slot raise. This retreating system is used in order to provide a good safe back over the miners working in any given sublevel. A crawler-mounted down-the-hole or conventional pneumatic drill puts the holes down from one sublevel to the next on any desired drill pattern. Gravity flow brings the broken ore down to the scram level. The illustration shows a large slusher mounted at the timbered raise and slushing from the pockets back to the raise chute. Development of the ore block in Fig. 2 is typical for a 5.5-m (18-ft) wide vein. Initial development is by a trackless heading driven in the footwall of the vein. Pockets are then put into and through the vein on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers. For ease in using trackless rubber tired mucking equipment, these pockets are crosscut to the vein at approximately 1.04 rad (60°) rather than per¬pendicular. A two-compartment timbered raise is driven down from one level to the next. Endline slot raises are again put through from level to level. Each of the sub¬level blocks selected in this example is 40-m (130 ft) long by 33.5 m (110 ft) high. Stoping starts at the slot raises and retreats back to the timbered raise. Long holes are drilled from one sub¬level down to the next by starting between the lowest pair of sublevels and then working up the ore block. Mucking out of the pocket drawpoints is accomplished by rubber-tired load-haul-dump (LHD) units which then dump into a centrally located orepass.
