The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel project, a U.S. EPA/ DOJ CSO Long Term Control Plan Project. The system will provide at least 10.3 million gallons of storage in a 16.5-foot finished ID and 6,660-foot-long rock tunnel. The system will reduce both overflow volume and number of overflow structures on the Cuyahoga River. The project includes deep drop shafts and more than 3,000 linear feet of 48 to 96-inch I.D. sewers installed by trenchless construction methods. This paper will discuss the project background, ground conditions, and other challenges overcome during the design phases.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) has funded a four-year research project to develop a computer model 'which will predict the hydrologic impacts of phosphate mining on surface and groundwater systems. The core of the model is an analytical geographic information system (SPANS) which integrates EPA's Hydrology Simulation Program Fortran (HSPF) surface water model with the McDonald-Harbaugh groundwater model (MODFLOW). The hydrologic model conducts both event and continuous annual Simulations driven by variable precipitation and temperature data. The model is currently being calibrated and will be ready for distribution to the user community in mid-1991.

The Coal Preparation Division of the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center conducted an investigation to assess and compare the pyritic sulfur reduction potential of coal-pyrite flotation and high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). Tests were run on three coals--an Upper Freeport bed coal, a Lower Kittanning bed coal, and a Pittsburgh bed coal--to establish grade- recovery relationships characteristic of both processes. Representative portions of each coal sample were crushed to two top sizes--nominal minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm) and nominal minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm)--and subjected to conventional froth flotation. The froth product was then beneficiated by coal-pyrite flotation or HCMS to provide a direct technical comparison of the two processes. At minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm), the size normally employed for coal flotation, both coal-pyrite flotation and HGMS effectively separated pyrite from coal, and the performance of the two processes was essentially the same. At a size of minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) , however, the performance of HGMS exceeded that of coal- pyrite flotation. The separations effected by HGMS were more efficient at minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) than at minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm). On the other hand, it was concluded that either the effectiveness of coal-pyrite flotation decreases with diminishing top size, or the process has not been optimized to treat material finer than 35 mesh (0.5 mm).

Traditionally the mineral and mining engineers have characterized particles by sieving and-settling. Within the last decade, with the advent of the scanning microscope, entirely new experimental and theoretical approachesl-10/have been taken to minutely define the particle surface. This approach depends upon a hypothesis which takes advantage of the recent developments in automatic micro-scopes which can acquire large amounts of information in a short time and the new computational techniques which rapidly reduce the information to meaningful, practical data. Historically sieving and settling are the oldest sizing techniques known. Sieving by square screens, shown on Figure l-A is a common, current practice for sizing particles both in the laboratory and in production. A woven cloth is used which usually has square openings. The size particle that will pass through the opening dependent on a complex relationship of its morphology. As can be seen in Figure l-A, neither the width nor the height of the particle is determined by sieving. From square screens one and only one parameter characterizing the particle size is obtained, that parameter is the radius of the sphere that will just pass through the given sieve opening. A variation of square mesh screen is the slot screens, shown in Figure 1-B. Here another measure more closely associated with the height of the particle is obtained. Once again, one and only one parameter is associated with the particles' shape.

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). Longwall mining is a highly productive and efficient coal mining method used in the USA. During longwall retreating, the belt entry must be maintained stable, and any roof fall in the belt entry would jeopardize mine safety and substantially interrupt the continuous production of coal in the longwall face. Past experience of longwall mining has shown that belt entry stability was the greatest challenge in longwall ground control, and the occurrence of roof falls in belt entries was largely associated with high horizontal stress. To properly support the roof in the belt entry, it is important to understand how longwall-induced horizontal stress changes affect roof stability in belt entries and to strategically install supplementary support to prevent any potential roof falls. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed horizontal stress measurements in the immediate roof of the belt entries for two Pittsburgh seam longwall panels oriented unfavorably to high horizontal stress. Hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were installed in the immediate roof at the intersection in each of the belt entries, and stress changes were monitored as the longwall face was approaching and passing the intersection. Numerical models were set up to calculate the longwall-induced horizontal stress changes in the roof at the monitoring sites. With the verified model, investigations were made of how horizontal stress is concentrated and relieved in the belt entry roof near the face under different panel orientations. Both measurements and modeling results showed that high horizontal stress is concentrated in the roof in the belt entry within about 15 m outby the face when a longwall panel is unfavorably oriented to the major horizontal stress. The study demonstrated that longwall-induced differential horizontal stress can be used as an indication of the degree of horizontal stress concentration. Roof support strategies are discussed on how to maintain the stability of belt entry under high horizontal stress concentration.

LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine is a sublevel caving iron-ore mine located above the polar circle in northern Sweden. The mine has been proclaimed seismically active since 2008 after a magnitude 3 seismic event, according to Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN). At that time the Kiruna Mine did not have mine-wide seismic system. Since then, the Kiruna Mine experienced several damaging seismic events of which the largest one on the May 18, 2020. The magnitude, based on the moment tensor inversion results on data from the SNSN as well as seismic stations in Finland and Norway, is estimated to 4.2 ± 0.2 moment magnitude. The seismic event on the May 18, 2020 was located in the middle of the one of the productions areas and caused the major damage in the mine, damaging several kilometres of drifts on six mining levels, some of them beyond the practical repair. These damages affected four of ten production areas on several levels, some more some less. Luckily, no person got injured from the seismic event and the very long aftershock series. An important part in the whole process after the seismic event was information flow and decision-making process. It was very important to keep workers and community informed as that contributed transparency of decision-making and decreased the speculations. Resuming the production in the damaged areas in the safe manner, very soon become main focus for the mine management. It was obvious that not only rehabilitation of the areas is needed to resume the production. It was A MUST to understand the factors behind the seismic event and its mechanism to be able to avoid same situation and prevent seismic event of similar size. Mine engineers had to think outside the box to find the solutions to ‘rescue’ every drift that they could to be able to make good enough base for continued mining of the area. The paper describes actions taken in a very complex process of recovering the area that we from the beginning thought need to be abandon. Seismological analyses of the event on May 18, 2020 and past activity in the area, damage mapping, detailed studies of structures and geology, numerical modelling as well as engineering judgement were used as base for all our decisions how to proceed in attempt to restore mining of the area heavily damaged by 4.2 moment magnitude seismic event, in a safe way.

This paper describes current research by the Bureau of Mines to develop technology for improving efficiency and productivity in metal/ nonmetal mines. The research program addresses a wide variety of problems associated with each of the major categories of mining: underground mining, surface mining, in situ mining, and premining investigations. An overview of the Bureau's research activities is given with emphasis on underground mining. In particular, two innovative and promising concepts currently under development are described: a unique shaft sinking system that uses an impact hammer for rock fragmentation, and a low-profile, portable crusher for underground hard-rock applications.

Banded ironstone and associated fine-grained carbonaceous sediments near Jardine, Montana, are enriched in gold, arsenic, and tungsten. The mineralized sediments lie within a thick sequence of quartz-mica schists cut by a 2.6 b.y, granite. Surface, underground, and drill hole mapping are used to construct structure contour maps of individual ironstone lenses. Each lens is then unfolded by triangulation of minimum surface path distances between drill hole penetration points. Major and minor element abundances in composite ironstone samples are interrelated through R-mode factor analysis. Results indicate five significant element groupings thought to reflect coarse detrital, fine detrital, sulfide-rich chemical, iron-rich chemical, and epiclastic ultramafic sediment. Ultramafic factor scores are highest in a previously undefined rock type rich in cummingtonite, biotite, and chlorite; lacking in quartz; and closely associated with at least one ore horizon. Detrital dilution of ironstone, calculated from chromium and nickel content, drops off significantly as ore-bearing ironstone is approached. This observation may indicate that centers of gold precipitation have protected themselves, either topographically or by rapid deposition, from detrital contamination. Gold mineralization correlates most strongly with the sulfide- rich factor. Gold may have been introduced through hotspring activity as a bisulfide complex.

"Most of the recent renewed interest in manganese nodule mining has been focused in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the NE tropical Pacific where nodules are rich in Mn, Ni and Cu. However, equally interesting, but compositionally different, nodules occur in the tropical central South Pacific (CSP). The CC Zone deposits lie in the International Seabed Area whereas those in the South Pacific lie mainly in the Exclusive Economic Zones of Island States, principally the Cook Islands and Kiribati. The CSP nodules should not be regarded as an alternative resource to CCZ nodules, as they are enriched in different elements. Rather, the CCZ nodules should be thought of as a source of one group of metals (Mn, Ni and Cu) and the CSP nodules the source of another group (see below), mutually complementing each other and to be mined in parallel for their different metals.Manganese nodule mining in the South Pacific has been mooted since the 1970s. However, new data on manganese nodule composition and abundance there have recently appeared. Also, a recently developed interest in 'rare', 'green' and 'technology' elements has necessitated a re-examination of old South Pacific nodule data for information on these elements (previously thought to be economically unimportant), and the re-analysis of the deposits to obtain new data on them. Additionally, current and possibly future applications to the UN to extend island 'continental shelf' areas necessitates an appraisal of the manganese nodules in these areas. These developments have prompted recent work that has helped to refine our understanding of the distribution and abundance of metals of traditional interest in South Pacific nodules, namely Mn, Co, Ni and Cu, but has also drawn attention to other elements of possible economic interest including titanium (Ti), vanadium (V) and the rare earth elements (REE)."

Nuclear radiation systems for gauging solids content in process slurries and level in crushers has demonstrated acceptance in ore processing. The use of nuclear radiation for moisture analysis of bulk materials is presently receiving acceptance in beneficiating and agglomerating processes. On the horizon is the use of nuclear activation methods for continuous, qualatative and quantitative analysis of concentrate. The common characteristics of these uses of radiation is the non-contacting nature of the measurement. Unquestionably, this is the dominant reason for acceptance of nuclear methods in level and slurry-gauging. Moisture activation analysis of a product using nuclear methods retain this advantage. However, and: more importantly, they offer new solutions to old problems. The nuclear method in addition to being non-contacting, is non-destructive and provides a continuous measurement of the process variable. The system responds: to the fundamental makeup of matter, mass and elemental composition, not to secondary properties such as temperature, resistivity, or dielectric constant. Measurement is a volume rather than a surface phenomenon, thus the results can provide a truer pricture of the measured variable.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), designed and constructed by Bouygues Civil Works Florida between 2009 and 2014, was a Public Private Partnership between the Miami Access Tunnel Concessionaire, Florida Department of Transport, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. The project comprises dual 11.3m internal diameter, 1.27km long, twin lane road tunnels running between Watson and Dodge islands and under the main shipping channel in Biscayne Bay (Figure 1).The POMT was a unique project which embodied many technical firsts and involved the first large diameter tunnels constructed through Florida’s challenging sedimentary carbonate strata. At the outset, a comprehensive ground investigation was performed, using both conventional and less conventional investigation techniques, to characterise the highly heterogeneous ground conditions.The findings of the investigation had a major impact on the tunnelling methods, triggering a series of mitigation works to ensure that the tunnels could be excavated safely and effectively. The mitigations included modifications to the already designed Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), to facilitate an innovative excavation process, and a unique grouting campaign (Storry et. al. 2013a). The project was completed and opened to traffic in August, 2014 and has significantly alleviated traffic congestion in Downtown Miami.GEOLOGICAL CONTEXTThe geological conditions at the project site consist of carbonate sediments which can be divided into distinct geologic units; the Miami Limestone Formation (Layers S3, S4), the Fort Thompson Formation (Layer S5), the Anastasia Formation (Layer S6), the Key Largo Formation (Layer S7) and the Tamiami Formation (Layer S8). Multiple changes in sea level over a relatively short geologic time scale have resulted in a heterogeneous profile consisting of interbedded sedimentary rocks and sediments, which vary widely, both vertically and laterally (Figure 2)."

"Refuge alternatives (RAs) are required in underground coal mines to support life post-disaster. RAs are mandated by MSHA to maintain an apparent temperature (AT) at or below 95°F (35°C) while providing a safe and livable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours. Because strata composition and mine temperatures will affect the final AT within an occupied RA, NIOSH researchers have collaborated with five underground coal mines across the US to characterize the effects of geographic location and seasonal temperature fluctuations on mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata temperatures. The data collected indicates that some mines will experience greater temperature fluctuations than others, based on geographic location. The mine which demonstrated the greatest temperature differential over the course of the year resulted in a mine air temperature that ranged from 53.4°F (11.9°C) to 84.2°F (29.0°C) and a rib surface temperature that ranged from 55.4°F (13.0°C) to 82.8°F (28.2°C). This data suggests that the location and seasonal peak temperature can significantly affect the mine strata temperature, which could lead to a fully occupied RA exceeding the 95°F (35°C) AT limit over the course of 96 hours. The data reported in this paper could be used to examine the heat buildup inside an RA for actual mine conditions. Thermal simulations could be implemented to evaluate maximum occupancy ratings based on actual mine temperatures and strata compositions. INTRODUCTION In the event of a mine disaster, miners’ primary focus is to escape. Should their attempt be futile, they can enter a refuge alternative (RA) to await rescue. In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated that underground coal mines implement RAs within 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of the working face and spaced within one-hour travel distances in outby areas where persons work such that persons in outby areas are never more than than a 30-minute travel distance from an RA or safe exit. These RAs are required to provide a safe and habitable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours and to prevent the apparent temperature (AT) from exceeding 95°F (35°C) [1]. There is concern throughout the industry that in some cases the internal ambient of occupied RAs may exceed the 95°F (35°C) AT limit due to the potentially hot mine atmosphere as well as the metabolic heat generated by RA occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) and its Experimental Mine (EM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. Further testing and analyses were completed to evaluate the mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation) by which heat is transferred from an RA to the mine surroundings. Additionally, the effects of varying mine strata compositions on the heat buildup inside an RA were studied [3]. The mine strata temperatures will increase due to heat transfer from within an RA. Depending on the mine strata composition, some mines may be more thermally conductive than others. For example, sandstone is much more conductive than shale or coal (i.e. it disippates heat at a quicker rate). All things being equal, the air temperature inside of an RA after 96 hours will be higher for a mine with strata that has low thermal conductivity compared to a mine with high thermal conductivity."

Many mineral oxide and multi-component oxide (basalt) specimens break down into powders upon expo-sure to sodium vapor at elevated temperatures for extended times. This paper examines several possible mechanisms of oxide breakage by sodium vapor, both experimentally and from a thermodynamic viewpoint. The oxides for which reduction by sodium was thermo-dynamically favorable all exhibited some degree of fragmentation. The oxides which were not favorable for reduction by sodium did not exhibit fragmentation, with the exception of rutile, a titanium oxide. The rutile fragmentation was caused by the reduction of iron that was in solid solution in the rutile crystal structure.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect drill bit wear and use that equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel software package. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

Tests were conducted to investigate the potential for recovering anthracite from preparation plant tailings. Samples were collected from tailings streams or slurry ponds of several anthracite cleaning plants. A washability analysis was conducted on each sample. The use of gravity-and surface-based cleaning processes for treating the 28x200 mesh tailings material was examined. Simulations were performed for various cyclone staging arrangements using published partition data for both water-only and dense-medium cyclones. Froth flotation testing was done on both precleaned anthracite and tailings material. Grade-yield curves were determined for various conditions.

An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). Results are presented for the first phase of an experimental program to study the feasibility of using acoustic velocity for predicting the state of stress in a rock mass. Compressional wave velocities were determined axially in cylindrical samples during uniaxial compression for several rock types conditioned in dry and water-saturated environments. Results indicate that in rocks containing compressible voids or cracks, substantial velocity change occurs with the application of stress in the lower (below 100 MPa) stress regime. The effect norm- ally is nonlinear, however, and diminishes to asymptotic values when cracks or voids become closed or with saturation. Empirical prediction equations were derived for each rock type by linear and nonlinear regression analyses, and correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the equations that best fit the stress- velocity data. The operational range for predicting stress using compressional-wave velocity appears to be within the range of vertical stress expected in most shallow to intermediate depth mining operations (less than 1,000 m). Based on the experimental results to date and theoretical considerations, it appears that the technology can be advanced to predict in situ stress based on acoustic P-wave velocity determinations in most mining situations.
