On April 14, 1975, Consolidation Coal Company began to operate a longwall face in their Shoemaker Mine using shield supports. This was the first time that shield supports were used in the United States (1) 1/. Shortly thereafter, Kaiser Steel Corporation started a shield longwall face at their York Canyon Mine (2). From October 1975 through May 1976, three more longwall faces were commissioned in mines located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. In June 1976, four installations had completed their first panel and two installations had completed the subsequent move to the second panel where coal production is now well under way. During this time (April 75 to June 76) the total number of shield support face operating months, including moving time, was 40 and the combined face advance was approx. 17, 000 feet (5200 m) with face lengths varying from 450 - 550 feet (137 - 168 m). While the shield support experience in the U.S. is still limited on the basis of time and mining parameters, the operating results of all faces have been very satisfactory. New record 24 hr production figures were set and - far more important - long term production figures could be sustained on an impressively high level even when taking face moving time into account. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance of shield type supports in the U.S. and to assess their value as longwall supports for U.S. underground mining conditions with regard to roof control, maintenance, operator convenience, safety and productivity.

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. Mining operations have long been accused of causing a disruption to local, domestic and agricultural water supplies. More recently, concern for water supplies has increased with the advent of high-extraction mining techniques, namely longwall mining. Theoretically, any water bearing zone in the overburden above a high-extraction mining operation may be affected by mining. In some cases, a confining bed may be fractured causing a loss of water to a particular zone. In other cases, increased fracture permeability may enhance the ability of an aquifer to transmit and deliver water. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of studies have been conducted that characterize hydrologic changes and also quant1fythe magnitude of mining-induced subsidence. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted such a study at a mine site located in Greene County, PA. A total of 8 water wells were drilled and hydrologic parameters such as specific capacity, transmissivity and well yield were determined both before and after mining. Electronic water level recorders were installed on each water well to provide continuous observations of water level fluctuations.

Borehole (slurry) mining, in which a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. Approximately 1700 tons (1.54x106 kg) of phosphate ore were mined at 40 tph (10.1 kg/s) from a depth of 250 ft (76 m). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

A goal programming-based worker scheduling model has been incorporated in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. In the model the accomplishment of each regular and non-regular job is a goal. The objective is minimization of the deviations away from the goals. A number of coefficients are used as premultipliers of the decision variables in order to address practical considerations associated with the utilization of workers and the requirements of jobs. Some of these premultipliers will be updated expertly within MMSS, timely updating the statuses of the dynamic parameters.

In anticipation of RCRA reauthorization and subsequent rulemakings, the Bureau of Mines is studying potential economic impacts of RCRA on mining. For U.S. copper heap and dump leaching operations in a variety of terrains, the cost of liners and closure caps to comply with RCRA Subtitle D ranges from $55 million to $158 million per site, or about $500,000 per hectare ($200,000 per acre). If RCRA technology requirements and financial assurance had been required on current operations, 27 to 100% of production from heap and dump leaching would have been non-competitive at market prices between $2,310 and $1,650 per metric ton ($1.047 and $0.75 per pound) copper. This result is based on an analysis that considers return on capital, corporate overhead, marketing, and freight costs as well as operating and maintenance costs at the mine. Over the same price range, economic analysis using the IMPLAN input-output model on one-or two-county regions indicates potential net job losses of about 570 to 2,700 jobs. Total economic output of those counties could be reduced by about $180 million to $360 million.

The known northern ore zones of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri extend to the drainage divide between the Meramec River draining north and east and that of the Black River draining southward. Intensive geochemical studies related to the environmental impact of the new mining area have been carried out in the vicinity of some of the newly developed mines, mills and smelter complexes (Bolter,1970; Gale, et al, 1973; Wixson, et al, 1969, 1977). Other investigations have related to fringe studies of the Northern New Lead Belt and the possible additions of heavy metals to the surface waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life (Proctor, et al, 1975, 1976). Similar studies have been completed in the Joplin area in the Tri-State district, and in the fringe area near Springfield, Missouri (Proctor, et al, 1974). A surface geochemical study is currently underway on the lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel province near Fredericktown, Missouri (Proctor and Sinha, 1977). This report summarizes some of the distribution patterns of heavy metals in the waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life in the Upper Meramec River drainage basin just north and west of the known northern portions of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. The region studied includes the site of the proposed and somewhat controversial Meramec Dam and the reservoir site behind it. Some 3905 km2 (1508 mi2) are included within the drainage basin of the Upper Meramec River. Six distinct drainage areas are included within the drainage basin; 1) a combined, lightly industrialized and farm area around Rolla and Salem, Missouri representing the Dry Fork drainage; 2) a primitive, mostly forested area with some farms and cattle rancheseast and north of Salem, Missouri comprising the Upper Meramec River

The main constituents of flat glass are the eight commonest elements of the earth's crust. Five of these, silicon, sodium, calcium, magnesium and oxygen are essential. Two more, Aluminum and potassium have beneficial properties. For colorless glasses iron is undesirable, in standard clear glasses a small amount of iron is tolerable, while for most tinted glasses iron is essential. These elements are present in glass as oxides and because they are so common there is no foreseeable resource shortage. The availability of supplies of materials at particular sites at prices which enable a glass manufacturer to be competitive may be another matter. In this paper it is intended to provide a historical perspective to the current situation, to contrast some of the traditional North American and European practices, and to progressively review some of the driving forces for future change and to attempt to assess their effects upon both raw material supplier and consumer.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) system utilization is a critical factor for predicting machine performance. The process of estimating machine performance, including rate of penetration (ROP) and machine utilization (U) must incorporate an understanding of site geology, TBM specifications and site management. The study herein presents a preliminary analysis of the different activity time and downtime components from hard rock TBMs at two project sites to evaluate their impact on machine utilization. A comparison of crew experience, first between shifts and then between projects is included to analyze its effect on utilization and downtime. This work presents the sensitivity of the utilization factor to selected activities in the projects and the impact of geology and site set-up/logistics on machine performance.

Most legacy drift mines entered the coal reserve from outcrop and developed up-dip. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 changed this way of mining, requiring all new mines with acid- or iron-producing coal seams to be designed so as to prevent gravity water discharges from the mine. This Act requires engineered barriers to contain the mine pool. In many cases, mine layout designs focus primarily on the size and hydraulic performance of the un-mined coal barrier between the up-dip mine pool and areas where down-dip surface discharge is possible. In other cases, designs focus on preventing discharges from barriers contained within the strata surrounding the mined coalbed. This paper focuses on a detailed analysis of the factors responsible for preventing mine pool discharges to surface waters. Important factors include: mine layouts, mining methods, hydraulic head and conductivity, and geology. While the exact causes for the successes and failures could not always be determined, reasonable mechanisms are presented.

It is estimated that the volume of low -level and intermediate level contaminants present in the soil at different DOE sites is of the order of several million cubic feet. The existing remediation scheme is containerization followed by burial in Land Disposal Facilities (LDF's) which is economically unattractive warranting the need to develop alternate remediation routes. One such route is the physical separation based volume reduction approach to removing a MINIMUM AMOUNT OF CLEAN SOIL with the radioactive particles, reducing the amount of material that requires disposal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and test the feasibility of using physical beneficiation techniques for removal of contaminants from soil. The performance criterion was to recover at least 80% of the activity in 20% or less of the original contaminated soil volume. Four different radioactively contaminated (primarily uranium and plutonium) soils from DoE sites namely LANL, INEL, Fernald Plant 1 Storage Pad (ID-B) and Mound soils were tested using gravity, magnetic, gravo-magnetic, hydrocyclonic and flotation devices. The paper is divided into the two sections. The first section presents the overview of the Heavy Metals in Contaminated Soil Treatability Project conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) describing the salient features of a state-of-the art Soil Washing Laboratory and the technology equipments used in the test program. The second section describes the soil characterization and typical volume reduction results obtained from the UNR tests. Among the physical separation processes, only flotation processes passed the performance criterion. For the LANL and INEL soils where the contamination was contained in coarse particle size, it was possible to recover more than 80% of the activity in less than 10-20% of the original volume of the soil thus rendering 80-90% of the soil "clean". For Fernald and Mound soils where contamination was of colloidal nature, flotation based processes showed encouraging results and are recommended for further studies.

This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

Introduction Samarco Mineracao S.A. is a Brazilian corporation jointly owned by S.A. Mineracao da Trindade (SAMITRI) and Utah International Inc., with 51% and 49% interests respectively. Headquartered in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Samarco owns and operates an open-pit mine capable of producing 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy) of iron ore; a concentrator rated at 7 Mt (7.7 million st); a 12-Mt (13.2-million st) capacity pipeline transportation system; a 7 Mt (7.7 million st) filtering and pelletizing plant; and a harbor facility. The mine, concentrator, and initial pipeline pump station are located at Germano, near the town of Mariana, about 300 km (186 mi) north of Rio de Janeiro by air. The pipeline terminal, pellet plant, and harbor are at Point Ubu, 70 km (43 mi) south of Vitória the capital city of Espirito Santo State, and about 300 km (186 mi) by air east of the mine. The 396-km (246-mi) pipeline uses 508-mm (20-in.) pipe except for a 53-km (33-mi) section where 457-mm (18-in.) pipe is used to absorb and control slack flow through increased velocity in one of the areas along the route. Iron Ore Slurry The hematite iron ore concentrate produced at the Germano plant is processed by grinding the average 53% run-of-mine itabirite iron ore to -150 µm (100 mesh) for gangue liberation. It is treated further by cyclones to remove the 10 µm (1250 mesh) slimes to prepare the ore for flotation. During the multistage cationic flotation operation, the silica is reduced to make low silica (-0.9%) concentrate for the direct reduction (DR) iron-making process or to make normal silica (-3.5% +2.5%) concentrate for the blast furnace (BF) iron-making process. The concentrate then is reground further to meet the particle size requirements for pelletizing. The reground hematite concentrate is screened in closed circuit with the regrind mills for close control of the maximum particle size, not to exceed 3.5% +75 µm (200 mesh) for pipeline wear protection. Thickened concentrates at 70% solids are pumped to four 5-kt (5,510-st)(dry) agitated slurry storage tanks that hold the feed before it goes to the first pipeline system pumping station. Pipeline Capacity The pipeline system was designed to transport 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) at 65% solids with an average minimum safe operating velocity of 1.5 m/s (5 fps). The pipeline will transport 5 Mt (5.5 million st) in 1982. The system, therefore, is moving the slurry in 13-kt (14,330-st) batches, dispatched at intervals to move 20 kt/d (22,050 stpd). In operation, the pipeline has exceeded its 93% availability design factor. Pipeline Facilities Pump station No. 1 is located at the Germano minesite 1 km (3,330 ft) above sea level. It has the following principal equipment: • four 5 kt (5,510-st) (dry) agitate slurry storage tanks; • two centrifugal charge pumps (one stand-by); • a 217-m (712-ft) safety loop; • seven mainline positive displacement triplex plunger pumps (189 m3/h, or 832 gpm, at 14.9 MPa, or 2,162 psi, maximum output pressure); • four corrosion-erosion spools; • a control and command center. The problem of estimating pillar capacity in coal mines has motivated development of a variety of empirical equations. Most of these equations have arisen from experience and a very limited set of measurements that have, necessarily, been focused on particular regions or coal fields. Their applicability is often limited to a specific range of pillar sizes. This is of particular concern in the design of large gateroad pillars and small barrier pillars between panels. The result has been a variety of equations and equation coefficients that can calculate load estimates to size pillars. Inclusion of these equations in more sophisticated loading models, such as boundary element methods (e.g. LaModel and MULSIM) has been hampered by absence of a function that describes specific variation of coal strength within the pillar. A singular exception, to our knowledge, is a function corresponding to the Bieniawski pillar strength equation. Because of this, it is the only coal strength criteria inherently available in most boundary element models. This paper presents a general method for deriving local coal strength, as a function of distance from the pillar rib, for an arbitrary pillar strength equation. Integration of this function provides the strength of pillar regions, or cells, needed for boundary element models. The method is demonstrated for the Bieniawski, Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations. The Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations contrast strongly with Bieniawski as strengths are extrapolated to large pillars and barriers. This development provides a tool for incorporating any of the proposed empirical equations into a boundary element model, thereby allowing the analyst to choose the most appropriate equation for a particular region, coal seam and/or pillar size.

Pad construction costs can impact the overall economics of heap leach projects. Pad construction costs for single-and double-lined pads, using various designs, are listed for a typical small and large project. Double-lined pads are now more often required by regulatory agencies. Unless such designs reduce the risk of site specific contamination significantly, the extra costs cannot be justified from an economical viewpoint. Specific attention is given to the short project life (typically five years) of heap leach projects. A few numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the overall economic impacts of these costs on economic parameters.

At the termination of mining, the quality of ground water in the ore-zone aquifer must be returned to a condition predetermined by the permitting agency. To immobilize the redox-sensitive elements (e.g., uranium, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum), it has been suggested that a reducing agent be circulated through the leached ore zone. We have conducted laboratory experiments to test the ability of sodium sulfide as such a reducing agent. Sodium sulfide lowered the redox potential of the effluent such that insoluble minerals containing the redox-sensitive elements should be stable. The uranium concentration of the solution decreased by more than three orders of magnitude. In column experiments, by the time ten pore volumes of the sulfide solution had flowed through, sulfide minerals were forming. The experimental results indicate that the addition of sodium sulfide should cause the chemical reduction of the leached sediments, thereby producing long-term stability of the ground-water/sediment system.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. The information I have concerning the early in situ uranium mining activities in Texas is "sketchy." Apparently, the first test was conducted between 1967 and 1971 in Gonzales County, north of Yorktown, at the Dueterstat Site, by, City Service. Other tests were run in Webb County at the Bruni Site, and in Live Oak County at the Burns and Clay-West Sites in the early 1970's. During this period the Texas Water Quality Board maintained a general surveillance of these tests. In mid-1974, Mr. Glen Davis walked into our Austin offices and requested a permit for Atlantic Richfield's first in situ uranium mine. This permit, issued in January, 1975, was for 3 acres of production, and was the first such permit issued in the United States. It formalized the regulation of in-situ uranium mining in Texas. The 4 years since then have been characterized by growth and change. Today there are 20 permits approved for approximately 2,000 production acres. These permits are issued to 8 companies at 13 sites in 6 counties. There are 7 additional permits being processed, or on the verge of being applied for. These will involve possibly another 2,000 production acres, 3 more companies in one more county.

"A 2nd generation roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) design was tested by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at a Midwestern underground coal mine. During the study, the roof bolter never operated downwind of the continuous miner. Using a combination of personal Data Rams (pDR) and gravimetric samplers, the dust control efficiency of the roof bolter CAC was ascertained. Performance evaluation was determined using three methods: (1) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to roof bolter concentrations outside the CAC, (2) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter, and finally, (3) using the gravimetric data directly underneath the CAC to correct roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC and comparing them to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter. Method 1 dust control efficiencies ranged from -53.9% to 60.4%. Method 2 efficiencies ranged from -150.5% to 52.2%, and Method 3 efficiencies ranged from 40.7% to 91%. Reasons for negative and low dust control efficiencies are provided in this paper and include: incorrect sampling locations, large distance between CAC and operator, and contamination of intake air from line curtain. Low dust concentrations encountered during the testing made it difficult to discern whether differences in concentrations were due to the CAC or due to variances inherent in experimental dust measurement. However, the analyses, especially the Method 3 analysis, show that the CAC can be an effective dust control device. INTRODUCTION Canopy air curtains (CAC) have been shown to be an effective respirable coal mine dust control for roof bolters in a laboratory setting with dust control efficiencies ranging from 14% up to 75% [Goodman and Organiscak 2001, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. Unfortunately, there is limited information on their effectiveness for controlling respirable coal mine dust in the field. On continuous miners, CAC dust control efficiencies ranged from 23% to 69% [Krisko 1975]. Two underground tests of the CAC on roof bolters demonstrated dust control efficiencies of 35% and 53% [Listak and Beck 2012] before problems occurred with operation of the CAC. Since the implementation of the new respirable coal mine dust limit from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (Code of Federal Regulations, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015), roof bolter CACs are becoming more commonplace in underground coal mines as a dust control tool to prevent roof bolter operator overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. J.H. Fletcher & Co. has been instrumental in delivering an effective design which incorporates the filter, blower, and canopy plenum seamlessly into the design of the roof bolter, resulting in a successful operational roof bolter CAC."

Permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established for gaseous pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and some gas-phase hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, as yet, no PEL recommended for diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA), nor is there a standard method for sampling this aerosol. The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size-selective inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in underground coal mines that use diesel equipment. The mine mean DEA concentrations for the five mines surveyed, determined with the PDEAS in the haulageway, was 0.89 mg/m3 with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3. DEA contributed 52 % of the respirable aerosol at this location. In three of the mines filter samples were collected for DEAassociated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biological activity determinations. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust. In general, the PAH and biological activity levels were similar for all three mines, and indicate that up to 25 % of the haulageway concentrations may be contributed by outby diesel vehicles. Measured concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels. INTRODUCTION Diesel exhaust contains pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and gas-phase hydrocarbons, as well as DEA. Much of the health-related concern focuses on DEA and associated organic compounds (Watts, 1992a). A wide variety of these PAHs have been identified and some are known carcinogens and/or mutagens. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has proposed new PELs for these and other contaminants (MSHA, 1989). MSHA has also published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to establish a separate PEL for diesel particulate (MSHA, 1992). The U.S. Bureau of Mines has collaborated with the University of Minnesota to develop and field test a PDEAS. The PDEAS is a three stage sampler based on the MSA' personal respirable dust sampler. It utilizes a respirable cyclone preclassifier followed by a 0.8 µm cut point impactor and afterfilter operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min. Respirable aerosol greater than 0.8, µm in size is collected by the impactor while DEA, less than 0.8 µm in size, is collected by the afterfilter. Hence, gravimetric analysis of the afterfilter permits measurement of DEA concentrations. This development and laboratory evaluation of the PDEAS were described previously by Cantrell (1990) and Rubow (1990). During field tests of the sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in continuous miner sections of five underground coal mines that use diesel haulage equipment. These air quality measurements included levels of selected PAH and biological activity associated with DEA collected in the intake and haulageway areas of three of the five underground mines, and CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 in two of the mines. The objectives of this paper are to present the DEA and associated pollutant concentrations measured in these mines and to assess the impact of diesel face-haulage equipment on underground mine air quality. MINE DESCRIPTIONS The mines used for the PDEAS evaluation were designated J, K, L, N, and 0. Mines K, N, and 0 are located in the Western United States, while mines J and L are located in the East. Each mine produces high volatile, bituminous coal with shift production levels varying from 500 to 2000 tons/section. Seam heights varied from 1.5 to 3.0 m. Mines K and N use continuous mining to develop longwall panels. The others are strictly room-and-pillar operations using continuous miners. The number and types of diesel-powered vehicles used at these mines were described by Watts (1992b). Mines J, K, N, and 0 use diesel power to assist in a wide range of activities in addition to coal haulage. These included road maintenance, personnel and materials transport, lubrication, and welding. Mine L used only three diesel-powered shuttle cars to haul coal. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS METHODS Aerosol Measurements Aerosol samples were collected in the mine portal area, the clean air intake to the continuous miner section, the haulageway one crosscut inby from the feeder breaker and belt, in the return airway, and on selected personnel. The haulageway sampling site was located near the point where the diesel-powered shuttle cars turn around to dump their loads. Additional respirable and DEA samples were collected and have been reported by Haney (1990).
