The main objective of this work was to quantitatively investigate exhaust emission levels, as related to maintenance (service) intervals, during the operation of diesel-powered equipment at an underground bauxite mine in Greece. Such emissions depend on a great number of parameters, including the type (technology) and tuning of the engine, the type of work performed as related to the engine workload, suggested maintenance intervals, the altitude, the temperature and the humidity of the atmosphere of the underground mine, the properties of the fuel, the operator's training and experience level. Necessary ventilation quantities were calculated based on exhaust gas concentration measurements, site specific relationships between pollutants and adjusted air quality indices. Diagrams comparing necessary and recommended air flow for several equipment groups featuring two engine types and for different maintenance intervals are presented.

In this study, the conditions of raw materials and fuels were simulated for Bayan Obo iron ore concentrate by adding pure calcium fluoride (CaF2) in various concentrations to Australian iron ore. The mechanism by which the fluorine (F) content of the lattice influenced the reduction swelling properties of the iron ore briquettes during various stages of the reduction process was investigated. The results provide insight into the mechanism governing the reduction swelling process in Bayan Obo ore briquettes, which could be used to direct real?world production practices, particularly those related to the rational utilization of Bayan Obo ore resources.

INTRODUCTION Nevada Goldfields began underground mining development at the Kingston Project in September, 1986, followed by mill start-up in March, 1987. The first gold pour in April followed three years of preparatory work in establishing a North American operational base for the production of precious metals by Golconda Minerals N.L., an Australian mining firm. GENERAL CORPORATE BACKGROUND The Golconda Group of companies was established in early 1983 in Australia. It began operations by successfully retreating tailings at several old gold mining sites throughout Australia. With the limited reserves available for tailings retreatment, Golconda began to look toward the future by conducting a gold exploration program in Australia. However, the continued high price of gold in Australia had limited the possibilities of acquiring good properties at a reasonable cost and consideration was given to looking outside Australia in addition to Golconda's domestic exploration activities. North America was favored because of the proven potential for substantial gold deposits, the established infrastructure which would allow for rapid and cost-effective development of new projects and the advantages of similar political and economic climates. In mid-1984, Golconda established an office in California and began an extensive study of over 100 prospects throughout the United States. Two prospects were identified as a result of this study whch showed merit; one was located at Empire, Colorado and the other at Aurora, Nevada. Negotiations were then successfully undertaken to acquire these two properties. Golconda's U.S. offices were moved to Reno, Nevada in early 1985 to facilitate management of its projects. To operate and manage these projects, a small Canadian company listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, Cannon Minerals, was acquired by Golconda and renamed Nevada Goldfields Corporation. The current structure of the company is shown below in Figure 1. A private placement of 2,575,000 shares of common stock at US54.00 per share was arranged by Jacksons Limited of Australia in association with W.I. Carr (U.K.) Limited of London. This placement resulted in US510.3 million being available in May, 1986 for the acquisition and initial development of the Aurora and Empire projects. While the financing was underway, project planning commenced on both the Aurora and Empire projects. "Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

The Boddington gold mine is located near Perth in Western Australia in the Saddleback Greenstone Belt, a fault-bounded sliver of Archaean volcanic and shallow level intrusive rocks, surrounded by granitic and gneissic rocks. The mine began operations in 1987, producing about 7.7 t/a (250,000 oz/year) until mining ceased in 2001. Built on the footprint of the original mine, the Boddington gold mine expansion project involved opencut mining from two large pits. Expected gold production is around 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for the first five years. It will be the largest gold mine in Australia. The mine has proven and probable reserves of more than 622 kt (20 million oz) of gold and has an expected life of more than 24 years. The mine is currently solely owned by Newmont Gold Corp., the world?s second-largest gold mining company, employing around 28,000 people worldwide. The conveyor and belt feeder contract for the Boddington gold mine expansion project was awarded by Aker Kvaerner Clough Murray Roberts (AKCMR) to FLSmidth Conveyor Engineering Inc. in August 2006. The contract involved the design and manufacture of 15 conveyors and 17 belt feeders with belt widths ranging from 450 mm to 2.4 m (18 in. to 96 in.) and conveyor lengths from 16 m to 2,172 m (52 ft to 7,125 ft). The total motor power added up to more than 16,700 kW (22,400 hp). The total length of all belting was almost 11.5 km (7.1 miles), and the total fabricated steel weight was approximately 3.7 kt (4,100 st).

A ventilation analytical system adapting nodal pressure method using skyline modified Choleski's decomposition scheme for network-flow analysis and a new practical system to estimate various thermal air conditions has been developed. The quasi-linear equations for solving steady-state network airflow have been described using the connective function in general forms. The skyline modified decomposition scheme has an advantage on rapid convergence and the sake of computer memory space com- pared with other schemes. The key part of the analysis for climatic conditions through network airways is how to estimate the temperature of the airway rock-surface with partly or full wet condition. A practical and simple solution without any iterative calculations for its estimation has been proposed. This new solution is applicable to practical ranges of airflow temperature, humidity, rock thermal properties and wetness. The present analytical sys- tem have been successfully applied to a ventilation simulator named "M1VENA"developed by authors.

This study focuses on the environmental characterization and assessment of long-term neutral mine drainage (CND) potential from waste rock piles at the abandoned Erdouz mine in Morocco. The study involved metallographic analysis, static tests, and column tests. Results indicate that the waste rock is not an acid mine drainage generator but produces CND, mainly with sulfates exceeding Moroccan standards. The waste rock is relatively stable and could be reused after pretreatment.

In the past few years the world petroleum industry has increasingly felt the weight of changes in the principal economic factors affecting pro¬fits. As a result of, these changes, it has been necessary for many oil companies to acquire certain new facilities in order to strengthen their competitive positions and thereby protect their tremendous investments in crude oil reserves, pipe line facilities, refining operations, and marketing outlets. Principally these needs have been met by new capital outlays. A supplementary, method of acquiring needed facilities, however, has been to obtain existing facilities through complete or partial acquisition of other companies.' properties. It is this method of meeting competitive pressures with which this paper is concerned. This paper presents a statistical breakdown of the mergers and acquisitions which occurred in the oil industry between January 1, 1954, and October 1, 1959, showing the frequency' with which certain types of properties were acquired in each of the years studied. In addition, it discusses the principal economic conditions which stimulated many of these property trans¬fers, comments on the effects of these mergers on the consuming public, and indicates the types of, mergers and the rate at which they may be expected during the next three or four years. The basic data upon which the statistical analysis presented in this paper is based were taken from several published sources. Obviously they are somewhat incomplete because not all mergers and acquisitions were reported However;, a careful search was conducted through, The Wall Street, Journal, The Oil and Gas Journal, Potroleum Week, and The Oil Daily with the result that the data should be reasonably complete and comparable for each of the years studied, It is believed, therefore, that the statistical analysis which' follows provides a reasonably accurate indication of the general trend in mergers and acquisitions during the period studied.

And a new generation of safety culture experts are telling mining companies how to use it: It is a situation that is still too common in the mining industry: the latest personal protective gear is in place. The safety rules are known and followed. And then, in a moment of inattention or carelessness, a mistake is made and someone gets hurt or killed. Common wisdom claims that such accidents are impossible to eliminate entirely. Mining is dangerous, and some miners will always be hurt and killed. An increasing number of mine safety experts, however, reject the common wisdom. A year with zero mining deaths is possible, they say; with the use of one of the newest weapons to the mining industry in the safety war: the concept of safety culture. Safety culture refers to the set of attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that influence safety in the work environment. It is also sometimes called the way an organization behaves when no one is watching. Robert Peters, of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), describes safety culture this way: ?It?s what?s believed on a day-to-day basis. For example, if a miner sees a workplace hazard and he truly believes that his boss wants him to identify the hazard and bring it to the company?s attention, that would be an example of a positive safety culture.?

Over the past several years, Somerset International has successfully installed over 20 patented Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery Systems in the United States, Australia, Canada and Russia. These installations recover between 5 TPH and 40 TPH for the host sites. In addition to the increased revenue from the direct recovery of a recirculating load (Screen Bowl “Insurance”, Direct Recovery vs. Indirect Recovery via Recycle, CPSA 2020), host sites have seen benefits ranging from improved operation of refuse equipment to a reduction in the solids content of the refuse streams. As Somerset has improved ultra-fine coal recovery through the introduction of Sub325® Effluent Flotation and, most recently, the Sub325® Effluent Settler™, the amount of coal that has been recovered from these systems has increased by up to as much as 25%. Many host sites have taken a sense of ownership in the Somerset system and consider it to be a critical circuit in the overall optimal performance of the plant. In the past year, Somerset has taken the initiative to expand upon the capabilities of the Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery System, primarily the Sub325® Solid Bowl Centrifuge, to include Refuse Tailings Dewatering to allow for co-mingled refuse disposal. As slurry ponds and boreholes are becoming difficult to impossible to permit and operate, there is a need for a reliable, low-maintenance, continuous operation that can produce a handleable refuse cake. Refuse tailings disposal applications are by no means limited to coal plants and impoundments. Somerset has successfully tested at iron ore and phosphate locations throughout the world and have begun commercial installations. The ability to dewater -325 mesh material, whether it be coal, coal refuse, iron ore tailings, or something else, is a vital piece of processing capability for the continued production of mining operations across the globe. This paper highlights the success that Somerset has had in the coal industry worldwide as well as the initial successes with phosphate, iron ore, and copper tailings (patent pending).

Poland in time of transition had been dealing with the remnants of the previous regime ? particularly in the field of environmental protection. The burden left was tremendous and there was a need for fast and effective tools for improving the environment. The idea of environmental protection had been supported by the introduction of a new environmental policy that underlined the importance of sustainable development in industry in the beginning of 1990s. This policy introduced high environmental fees and fines ? a concept not very popular in Europe in that time ? and good only for a country in transition to boost the protection of the environment. While this policy had its role to play, its role is now completed. It is time to move forward, especially when these environmental charges affect the international competitiveness of industries so much, and at the same time have virtually no influence on environmental protection investments any more.

Natural Zeolites are a less expensive and in certain applications a superior alternative to organic ion exchange resins. Mining and metallurgical waste streams are difficult to treat because the effluents which contain potentially valuable heavy metals such as copper, lead, and silver are often highly acidic and contain significant quantities of suspended solids. Under rigorous operational conditions, certain natural zeolites can remove the metals, which if desired can be recovered by either elution or conventional smelting techniques. There are significant differences in cation exchange rate, selectivity and capacity as well as resistance to either high or low pH, blocking cations and tolerance to elevated or depressed temperature and pressure not only between different zeolite minerals but between the same mineral from different deposits. Applying natural zeolites to the treatment of mining and metallurgical waste streams depends on matching the specific zeolite to the effluent by characterization of the zeolite minerals.

The adsorption of dialkyl di-and mono-thio-phosphinates on gold, silver and gold-silver alloys has been studied in the present work. These reagents, which are selective collectors for sulfide flotation, have been found to improve precious metals recovery from ores. Voltammetric studies have indicated that dithiophosphinate adsorbs on gold at much higher potentials than on silver, while monothiophosphinate adsorbs only on silver. However, both adsorb on gold-silver alloys with the adsorption potential decreasing with increasing silver content. Using FTIR spectroscopic measurements, the surface species formed during the interactions of these collectors have been identified. The results of the electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements have been compared with the contact angle data obtained at controlled potential conditions.

The objective of EU waste policy is to reintroduce used materials into the economic cycle, especially by recycling, or to return them to the environment in a useful state or at least a harmless state. To support decision-making in complex systems, the standardised ISO 14040 life cycle assessment (LCA) method can be used to quantify and to interpret the environmental repercussions of (changes in) a product system from cradle to crave related to a functional service unit. The use of the standardised LCA method at European level can be characterised as a damage-oriented or top-down method, which is often used in product design. Winning, extraction and processing of metals are part of the interconnected worldwide metals production system linked to product design, manufacture and recycling. This complexity cannot be dealt with using LCA. This paper will discuss a dynamic model that deals with this complexity, at the same time providing detailed bottom-up insight into the complex web of materials referred to as Metal Ecology. An example on the replacement on lead in solders will be discussed to illustrate this.

The vegetation of Mediterranean ecosystems is distinguished by its resistance to adverse environmental conditions, and that is the reason for examining the possibility of growing species of this flora in waste disposal sites (WDSs). The survival and growth of vegetation established at a waste disposal site is dependent to a large extent on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the material used in the final soil cover. In the Ano Liossia WDS, where extensive remediation work is under way, three areas were examined, which met certain criteria in relation to the age of the underlying waste and the existence of impermeable material in the final soil cover. Laboratory analyses have determined soil parameters and nutrient and heavy metal content. Alongside this, at all three sites a network has been installed to monitor the qualitative characteristics of the gaseous phase of the soil cover material. The results showed the existence of a soil material containing few nutrients and the prevalence of oxygen-poor conditions, accompanied by large concentrations of CH4, CO2 and H2S, at depths of up to about one meter.

Road tunnels in recent infrastructure projects in Sydney, Australia, are designed to have a fire resistance level of either a 4-hour cellulosic fire or a 2-hour hydrocarbon fire. Where permanent ground support for tunnels consists of systematic rock bolts and relatively thin layer of shotcrete, it is important to ensure that during and after the fire event the ground support is designed/predicted not to pose risks to the tunnel occupant. The global behavior of the ground support can be predicted using finite element analysis, and its resistance is derived with consideration of the material strength degradation due to the elevated temperature.

Fortunately, few mining professionals have dealt with what all mining professionals fear---a mine disaster. Unfortunately, many have dealt with ?accidents? which may or may not claim lives but nevertheless rise to the level of a ?disaster? given the fallout of liability and litigation in today?s society.1 The undersigned authors published an article some ten years ago regarding crisis management2 based upon their collective first-hand experiences in actual disasters to that point in history. Unfortunately, disasters have occurred since that time, prompting legislation, and a fresh analysis and expansion of those basic principles is certainly in order. Without question, no two disasters are ever alike, yet general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action can be formulated?and if a mining operation is to have any chance of survival after a disaster, such a plan is vital. The primary concern as any disaster evolves remains as stated a 2003 SME article3--the protection of human life. From that point, the focus moves to any assistance that may be needed given the magnitude of the situation. Permeating throughout this process is "damage control." The first step in dealing with a disaster, however, begins long before any threat of danger arises?formulation and implementation of an Emergency Response Plan.

Weir Minerals ? Linatex has developed a new approach to the dewatering of fine solids, particularly mine and process plant tailings and wastes. The Weir process, patented in 2009, uses standard process equipment in a standard flow sheet, but applies this approach to materials previously thought to be too fine to be dewatered with this type of equipment. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, making lower moisture products that can be re-used elsewhere or sent to disposal. It has already been tested successfully on a small scale in Australia on coal fines, zinc mine tailings, red mud, iron ore tails, and copper/gold tailings. The principal factors affecting the solids recovery have been established as: 1. The % solids in the slurry feed to the process ? a higher % solids provides a higher recovery. 2. The particle size of the feed solids ? coarser feeds provide higher recoveries. The key factors affecting the % solids in the dewatered product have been determined to be: 1. The particle size of the dewatered product - coarser materials produce a higher % solids in the dewatered product. 2. The height of the discharge weir on the dewatering screen - a higher discharge weir on the dewatering screen also yields a higher % solids. 3. The angle of the dewatering screen. Setting the screen horizontal increases the travel rate, reduces the bed depth and reduces the % solids in the dewatered product. Back-sloping the screen up to 5° reduces the travel rate and increases the % solids in product. Eight plants ranging in size from 3 t/h to 40 t/h have been sold to a range of customers in China, for coal and iron ore tailings treatment. Australia has one plant, a small unit rated at 30 t/h of sand fines, and has recently completed test work on iron ore tailings for a dewatering plant rated at 135 t/h. Additional tests are under way with clients around Australia, to demonstrate the capabilities of this process on specific applications and to provide confirmation that materials can be processed successfully, before moving on to larger scale tests or full size plants. The advantages of the Weir process include - lower moisture in products, uses proven equipment, lower capital and operating costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, compact footprint, can be used in parallel or in series with existing equipment, modular design to facilitate redundancy or expansion, efficient water recovery and simpler water management, reduced cement in backfill mixes, smaller tailings disposal footprint, reduced earthworks requirements, much lower seepage losses, more stable tailings mass, progressive site rehabilitation, reduced impact on local wildlife, reduced risk of dam wall failure, and reduced environmental monitoring and compliance costs.
