Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

The US Bureau of Mines is cooperating with Cyprus Mineral Park Mining Co., Columbia University, and the US Geological Survey in investigating the feasibility of applying in situ leach mining methods to fracture-hosted, supergene copper sulfide (chalcocite) ores. This paper presents the initial findings of mineralogical, hydrogeological, and geochemical characterization studies conducted at the Mineral Park mine, located in the Wallapai mining district of northern Arizona. A design for in situ leaching is proposed that would minimize the need for blasting prior to leaching, and would enable economical development of deep reserves at the Mineral Park mine. The in situ leaching design would also reduce the potential for long term acid rock drainage.

Four areas have been identified as favorable drill-site locations for determining whether or not a suspected prophyry copper deposit exists in Rowe Canyon, Nevada. Favorability is based on the similarity to a deposit model constructed from geochemical data for the porphyry copper deposit near Ely. Favorability is defined as the coincident number of positive anomalies for the elements zinc, silver, arsenic, antimony and iron. The favorable areas coincide with an observed magnetic high and areas in proximity to major faults.

The Bunker Hill Mine, located in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of lead-silver-zinc ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones, and now covers an area approximately one mile in length and one-half mile in width. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tons of ore per day. A two-mile adit, the Kellogg Tunnel, at the 2500 elevation, provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft, 500-inclined shaft, extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal, inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for mainline track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical feet apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine. The conventional and autoloader mechanized square-set and cut-and-fill mining methods used throughout the mine have been the subject of a recent paper(l). One-third of current production is from vein-type ore bodies which are long distances from main shaft areas. Such veins generally dip about 450, have relatively narrow widths of from 3 to 20 ft, and usually contain less than 500,000 tons of ore. For many years, ore bodies thus situated have been developed by means of a separate inclined, timbered service shaft-raise connecting two or more main haulage levels. These commonly range from 400 to 1000 ft in vertical extent and are equipped with 25 to 50 hp electric, single-drum hoists. Intermediate levels are driven as conventional track drifts at 100-ft vertical intervals between the haulage levels. Ore and waste from the intermediate levels are trammed to orepasses for delivery to the lowermost haulage level servicing an ore body. The final result may be visualized as a number of small mines within a large mine. The problems of high development costs and high total development time, and the large amount and high cost of providing materials handl ing and ore haulage service while producing from this isolated type of stope block, made it desirable to consider totally new approaches in developing and mining a number of similar areas.

Lead and zinc have been mined for over 90 years in parts of the Lower Benue rift in southeastern Nigeria. However, there has been little interest in the sustainability of the environment and the inhabitants of the host communities. Adverse effects include soil and food crop contamination, lack of education, poor healthcare, unemployment, and no access to potable water. This work suggests practicable mitigation strategies to ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

Energy Developments Ltd. (EDL) has developed power plants at two Australian coal mines that featuring 94 gas-fueled Caterpillar G3516 engine/generator sets. They will convert to electricity 145 kt/a (160,000 stpy) of coal-seam methane gas for sale to a local utility. The $100-million project will cut the sites' methane emissions in half, provide a low-cost energy source and offset mine operating costs. The project began in May 1995. It is located at the Appin and Tower longwall underground mines, 80 km (50 miles) south of Sydney in New South Wales. The installation is one of the first to capture coal-seam gas from mine ventilation air and gas drainage systems. Coal- seam gas contains 40% to 60% methane, which fluctuates constantly. The system is expected to convert 578,000 m3/d (20.4 million cu ft/d) of coal-seam gas to 94 MW. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.5 Mt/a (3.8 million stpy) of CO, equivalent emissions. The Appin and Tower mines each produce 2 Mtla (2.2 million stpy) of clean coking coal. They operate around the clock with about 400 workers per site. The mines are owned by BHP Steel, Collieries Division, which will share the revenues from energy sales. The Appin Power Partnership consists of EDL and Lend Lease Development Corp.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel crossing beneath Burrard Inlet is an important component of the Greater Vancouver Water District’s plans to increase seismic resilience and meet increasing water demands. The project included the 110-meterdeep (350 ft) South TBM Receival Shaft, one of the deepest shafts to date in the sedimentary rock unit underlying much of Metro Vancouver. The shaft encountered varied sedimentary rock types, including fractured rock, with accompanying high groundwater inflows. This paper discusses the design and construction challenges associated with this shaft and the necessary means to complete the shaft in time for TBM arrival.

The thickening and dewatering characteristics of refuse slurries are as variable as the coal mining operations and preparation plants that create them. This paper discusses these characteristics based on field studies at a number of mine sites. The connection between bench and full scale performance is confirmed with the design, construction and operation of an integrated 18m (60 ft) diameter thickener and 2.5 meter belt filter press system in Western Kentucky. The data from this system are presented.

The first of a series on the evaluation of rock cutting tools, this paper discusses the results of full-scale laboratory drilling tests that compare the performances of several polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) coring bits. The tests were performed in welded tuff as part of a site characterization program. Number of cutters, size of cutters, air course design, and other parameters were evaluated as they affect penetration rate, but this paper focuses mainly on the relationships of torque vs. thrust (weight-on-bit), specific energy vs. penetration rate, and thrust vs. penetration rate. These relationships change in diagnostic ways according to bit type, bit condition, and type of welded tuff.

The uncertainty associated with a reserve estimate has generally been expressed as a subjective ranking rather than a quantitative expression of either reliability or uncertainty. These rankings of estimate reliability have taken a very nonquantitative bent as well. For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission definition of proven reserves is given as: Reserves for which (a) quantity is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, workings, or drill holes, grade and/or quality are computed from the results of detailed sampling and (b) the sites for inspection, sampling and measurement are spaced so closely and the geologic character is so well-defined that size, shape, depth and mineral content of reserves are well-established. The lining of the tunnel and shafts for a new section of New York City's- water system required extensive components to produce, deliver and place a continuous tunnel linning. The project placed approximately 153,000 CM (200,000 cy) of concrete for 5,340 M (17,520) of drill and blast 7.3 M (24 ft.) ID tunnel, located at depths of 152 M (500 ft.) to 213 M (700 ft.) . This section of tunnel will be connected to the surface water distribution system via four shafts of varying diameters ranging from 5.8 M (19 ft.) ID to 1.5 M (5 ft.) ID . All work was done beneath the streets of Manhattan under the rigid constraints of the City of New York and the Bureau of Water Supply regulations.

Two recent Bureau studies evaluated workers' dust exposures in automated pallet loading processes. The first study involved a Bureau designed dust control system using a push-pull ventilation technique. The unit was shown to reduce workers' dust exposures by 76% during pallet loading at a ground silica operation. A hydraulic lift table was used to automate the bag stacking process; this kept the loading height constant throughout the entire pallet loading cycle. The second study evaluated different commercial automated pallet loading systems. These systems automatically stack the bags onto pallets, shrink wrap the pallets, and deliver the pallets to a fork lift pickup location. Results from a ground silica evaluation site indicated respirable dust samples taken were below the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) as established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

The utility of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the separation of quartz from hematite is demonstrated. Yeast cells, as well as their metabolites, functioned as flotation collectors, depressants or flocculants and dispersants for hematite and quartz. Interaction between yeast and the above minerals resulted in significant surface chemical changes, rendering quartz surfaces hydrophobic and hematite hydrophilic. Mineral-specific extracellular proteins and exopolysaccharides were secreted by yeast cells when grown in the presence of quartz and hematite, respectively. Quartz could be efficiently separated from hematite through microbially induced flotation and selective flocculation.

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

A new P(MAAA) latex was developed and used in separation of ultrafine apatite from calcite and silica by means of selective flocculation. The latex was found to flocculate selectively apatite from apatite/calcite and apatite/silica mixtures in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium silicate over a pH range from 9.1 to 9.4. The separation of apatite from calcite was more selective with sodium tripolyphosphate, while the results of the separation of apatite from silica were better when sodium silicate was used. In the apatite/calcite system, 90% apatite recoveries into a concentrate containing 34% P2O5 were possible in the presence of 4 mg/l of sodium tripolyphosphate at a latex dosage of 2.2 kg/t. In the apatite/silica system, 80% of apatite could be recovered into a concentrate containing 33% P2O5 in the presence of 20 mg/l of sodium silicate at a latex dosage of 1.1 kg/t. Deposition tests were used to study the interaction between the latex and the mineral surfaces. The results revealed that deposition density of the latex on apatite was higher than on calcite; the differences between the deposition onto these two minerals were higher at pH 9.2 than at 7.2. The results point to the stronger interaction between the latex and apatite surface when compared with the latex-calcite interactions.

Rational design based on engineering fundamentals is essential for the layout of safe, stable shafts and tunnels. Shafts and tunnels including winzes, raises, adits, and crosscuts are lifelines to the underground and must be secure. The contribution of this paper describes a significant extension in existing software previously developed for five important design problems in strata-bound mines such as coal, trona, salt, potash, and some large, lead-zinc mines. This extension in software allows analysis to proceed in three easy steps: (1) preparation of a strata properties file, (2) generation of the finite element model, a mesh, and (3) finite element program execution. Circular, elliptical, and rectangular shaft sections are available for a single shaft, twin shafts, and shafts in a row. Spacing of twin shafts and shafts in a row is a free parameter (pillar width). Tunnel shapes are the same as shafts but include the conventional arched back section. Dipping strata of variable thickness, depth and orientation relative to the excavation of choice are allowed. The analyses are three-dimensional. An elastic-plastic material model based on associated rules of flow and an N-type yield condition for isotropic, transversely isotropic, or orthotropic rock are used for all strata. Example analyses from several hardrock mines are provided to illustrate the three-step process including mesh plotting and plotting of selected results. The goal of this software is to advance mine design technology for improved miner health and safety.

INTRODUCTION Legend has it that when Isembard Kingdom Brunel was confronted with the cost and consequences of one of his bridges having failed, he responded cheerfully that the event had saved investors and taxpayers a fortune because it prevented him from repeating the same design at several other locations. To meet the demands of rejuvenating and expanding the transportation system in an era of industrial growth Brunel and his contemporaries introduced bold designs and many innovations. Great advances in design and construction techniques resulted, yet these too had their practical limits as the story tells. In the gold mining industry today we face the same challenge of expansion, yet designers must respond mindful of economic restraints. Is innovation the answer? It has two meanings; to bring in novelties and to make changes. Distinguishing between improvement and novelties, or simply recognizing the benefits and limitations of new ideas over proven technology is part of good design. This paper will illustrate the practical aspects of selecting appropriate solutions to a design problem by examining a variety of examples common throughout the industry. Since a variety of engineering disciplines contribute to the design of a gold processing plant, and each has some old wisdom to impart or new development to boast this paper is divided into the different areas of expertise involved.

INTRODUCTION Classification of coal seams as thin, medium, and thick is both subjective and relative and is more a reflection of the statistical mode of the thicknesses en- countered in a mining region. A geological factor more precisely understood as defined than thickness is the inclination of the seams to the horizontal, commonly referred to as the pitch or the dip of the seam. Thick and steeply pitching seams present far more challenges to the ingenuity of the mining men to devise methods for their extraction than the thick and less steeply inclined ones. In a marginal case, where a thick coal seam may be minable by surface or underground methods, the decision bears a close relationship to the technological developments in the mining scene. Near surface thick coal seams are a special gift of nature and are not as wide- spread as the ones that call for the application of under- ground methods. Recent advancements in surface mining equipment have made it possible to surface mine to great depths. Stripping ratios of 30: 1 (cu yd of over- burden removed per ton of coal) have been achieved. The extraction of thick seams which preclude the use of surface methods is the concern of this chapter. Specifically, the objective here is to outline the special technological factors in underground mining of thick coal seams and to illustrate through several case histories the methods that are practiced in the North American continent. For the purposes of this chapter, a thick seam is defined as one which is not readily minable with currently available equipment without modifications to the extraction method or the equipment. At the present time, a thickness of 4.8 m (16 ft) can be considered as the lower limit, although developments in equipment and methods can be expected to push this limit upwards. The data for the case histories were collected from two extended mine visits in 1975 and 1978, and from other published accounts of the mines visited. Reference is drawn particularly to reports by Bise, Ramani, and Stefanko (1976) and Rarnani and Kenzy (1979). THICK SEAM MINING METHODS The various methods of mining thick seams can generally be grouped into three major categories: full face methods, where the entire thickness of the seam is re- covered in a single pass; slicing methods, where the seam is extracted to its full thickness by horizontal or inclined slices either in an ascending or descending order; and caving methods, where the seam is undercut and the en- tire coal seam is recovered by caving the top coal into the excavated cut, or some variations of the basic sub- level caving method. As shown in Table 1, in each of these methods, the coal is removed by either room-and-pillar or longwall methods. Hydraulic mining and transport of the coal in open flumes or in pipelines are also practiced. Addition- ally, the void created by the removal of coal may be filled with a packing material (stowing) except in the caving methods. The pitch (dip) of the seam, particularly when it is greater than 0.26 rad (150), imposes severe operational limitations on mobile equipment. The trend toward development of large low grade ore bodies has accelerated in recent years. It has been estimated within the copper industry that "porphyry" type deposits will provide the bulk of copper production during the next 30 years. It is further estimated that in these deposits the average ore grade by the year 2000 will be 0.25% copper (1). Many of the new porphyry copper discoveries are of such extremely low grade that they are particularly sensitive to small fluctuations in cost variables and copper prices. Because haulage constitutes a major item of surface mining expense, the capability to transport large tonnages of material at increasingly lower unit costs is vital to the profitable operation of many of these mines. High capacity conveyor belts appear to have considerable promise in this area. The heaviest use of high tonnage conveyors has been in the brown coal industry in Germany. In the past 20 years several such installations have proven successful. In addition to the German installations, several other successful systems have been put into operation. Some examples are: The Oroville Dam project in the United States; the tar sand operation in Northwest Canada; the pre-mine stripping and mining of the Twin Buttes Mine in the United States; the Kursk Magnetite 'dine in the U.S.S.R.; and the Nchanga Copper Mine in Zambia. Most of the systems mentioned are handling alluvial material consisting mainly of fines. The noteworthy point regarding these installations is their high continuous capacity. One of the largest lignite mines in the world is at Fortuna, Germany, where over 15,700 tons (15,250mt) per hour of overburden is transported on an 87 inch (221cm) wide belt running, at over 1000 feet (305m) per minute.(2). Another example is a 20,000 ton (18,150mt) per hour system for loading iron ore into barges on the Great Lakes (3).

One of the most important problems facing the coal industry today is the disposal of refuse from the coal preparation plants in a safe, economical, and efficient manner while complying with all legal requirements. The most commonly used refuse disposal method has been landfill/impoundment. In this method, the coarser refuse fractions are disposed of by layering and compaction into a landfill. The fine coal slurry refuse fraction is impounded in a dam constructed of a portion or all of the coarser refuse fractions. The failure of an impoundment at Buffalo Creek, Saunders, West Virginia and the sliding failure of a coarse refuse pile at Aberfan, Wales, England, resulted in an evaluation of refuse disposal methods by various regulatory agencies as well as coal producers. The result of this evaluation was the promulgation of Federal regulations dealing with the preparation, operation, and final abandonment of coal refuse disposal areas. As a consequence of these regulations the use of the landfill/impoundment method of disposal became in some cases economically unfeasible or technically impossible. At the time of the promulgation of the new Federal regulations, United States Steel Corporation was in the process of designing the Cumberland preparation plant. As a result of the new regulations
