Rock surrounding mine openings frequently is an impermeable type such as shale or granite. Most rock, however, has joints, bedding planes, cleavage planes, or other potential discontinuities. Permeability to fluids (gas or liquid) may exist via natural joints or fractures in an otherwise impermeable rock. In the mining situation, tectonic and induced tensile and shear stresses may be great enough to cause joints to open or fractures to develop in previously solid rock. The rock, as a result, becomes less self-supporting and may - require artificial support such as rock bolts or timber. Simultaneously, as fractures develop, permeable paths may be created. If fluid can be injected into a previously solid and impermeable rock mass, a logical conclusion is that a fracture (crack) flow path must be transmitting that fluid. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Laramie (Wyo) Energy Research Center has been evaluating results of in-situ oil shale fracturing (hydraulic or explosive) and retorting experiments by. a fluid (air) injection , and borehole air flow profile logging technique since 1956 (1, 14, 15). In the oil shale case, it is imperative to know the location and flow capacity (permeability) of natural fractures, if they exist, and induced fractures that inter-connect vertical wellbores at depths of fifty to several hundred feet. By injecting air into one wellbore in a system of several wells and measuring input volume and pressure while simultaneously measuring the output of other wellbores, the minimum areal extent of interconnecting permeable fractures can be determined. Exact locations (depths) of fractures and individual fracture flow capacities between wellbores can be determined by air flow profile logging (14, 15). Knowledge of fracture locations and permeability is essential to rational experimental in-situ retorting design.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. The city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany is located at a main transit road to Tyrol in Austria and suffers of a very heavy traffic load. Therefore, the Kramertunnel as a by-pass tunnel is built to release/mitigate the traffic through the city centre. The 3,600 m long single tube road tunnel is designed with a parallel but smaller emergency tunnel and with cross passages, fitted with single- and doublesided emergency bays, a vent shaft, and an intermediate ceiling to separate fresh air supply from the road traffic. The tunnel, concrete lined along its entire length provided the challenge to find smart formwork solutions for quick set-up, repositioning, setup and pouring. Three particularly specific sections are discussed in this paper.

Methods of utilizing flocculants as settling and filter aids for mineral processing slurries are reviewed. Broad chemical classifications and techniques for proper dilution, multiple addition, and combination treatments are discussed. A variety of custom built and commercially available systems for make up and delivery of flocculants to the application points are in use through- out the mining industry. Those concepts which, in the author's opinion, are particularly important to the successful make up and use of flocculants are presented in relationship to the available make up and feed systems. Actual industrial applications are included in the presentation.

"The reactivity of an enargite mineral electrode was investigated spectroelectrochemically under conditions typically found in alkaline sulfide leach solutions, with pH 11-13 and Na2S additions of 50 and 250 gL-1. A bulk enargite electrode was cycled between 0 and -1,000 mV for each set of solution conditions. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine and compare surface formations against species in mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams generated using STABCAL. Previously, it was determined that arsenic could be selectively leached under alkaline conditions at an average solution potential of -300mV, across the pH range 11-13. Operating under such conditions allowed for the selective leaching of arsenic with elemental sulfur formation. From several of the voltammograms obtained during this current testing, the formation of elemental sulfur appeared at increasingly reducing conditions with increasing sulfide concentration. At high concentrations, copper started to dissolve, possibly as a bisulfide complex, reducing the selectivity of the leach, unlike previous studies. However, the presence of the higher sulfide concentration is also anticipated to prevent passivation by consuming any surface formation of elemental sulfur. This study provides insight into the operating parameters of alkaline sulfide leaching in regards to the selectivity of arsenic leaching, as well as guidance for control of reagents and solution potential and, of course, the need for water treatment afterwards.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of arsenic-bearing concentrates have forced operations to consider other solutions. Attempts to hydrometallurgically process enargite (Cu3AsS4) fall into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under basic conditions. The authors believe that the selective leaching of arsenic is more amenable because it produces a solid copper phase, preferably chalcocite (Cu2S) or covellite (CuS) that could then be processed using conventional methods already in place in the copper and gold industries. Potential leaching methods include alkaline sulfide leaching (Achimovicovica et al., 1999; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008a,b; Tongamp et al., 2009 and 2010), hypochlorite leaching (Vinals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihaljovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and acid leaching (Gow et al., 2014b) with or without fine grinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface and increase normally slow leach reaction kinetics (Achimovicova et al., 1999; Balaz et al., 2000; Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006). About 1,000 machines around the world are breaking rock and hard abrasive materials by a very economic, high intensity, autogenous process, but this method is largely ignored by the mining industry. This vertical shaft autogenous impact crusher has impact velocities around 70 m/s, which compare with those of Cascade and SAG mills of up to 10 m/s. The autogenous impact, breakage processes are all at higher intensity levels and the products reflect this difference. The topic of liberation is breifly considered. A series of tests with a laboratory scale machine are reported to illustrate a number of the characteristics of the process. This paper highlights topics for further evaluation and research.

The Basalt Waste Isolation Project of the U.S. Department of Energy is a part of the National Was re Terminal Storage Program. Its mission is to assess the feasibility of siting a nuclear waste repository in the basalt formations which underlie the Hanford Site of the U.S. Department of Energy. The progress in all program areas is summarized in this paper. Activities conducted to date have led to the identification of possible repository candidate sites within the Hanford Site.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. The Minera Yanacocha operation presents various operating challenges, due to the complex structure of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters on issues such as water usage and inventory. An integral component of the water/mass balance of the process is a model of each heap that describes the flow and chemical behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software framework is used to model the individual heaps. The structure, calibration and validation of the model are described. Several examples demonstrating application of the process heap model are presented for the La Quinua heap. The effects of loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased cyanide levels in applied solutions and higher copper head grades on the process operation and balance are investigated with model simulations and compared to the baseline operating conditions. An example of estimating gold production and inventory based on projected heap loading plans is provided.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). Surface mining and reclamation has the potential to at least temporarily increase surface runoff and resultant erosion and gully development. This increase in erosion is due in part to compaction of the soil surface with heavy equipment, creation of large relatively unvegetated watersheds, and elimination of natural dendritic ephemeral drainage patterns. Methods for stabilizing gully channels which may develop prior to establishment of sufficient vegetation to control erosion are analyzed. Utilization of various sizes of riprap for channel lining, the use of riprap check dams, reinforcement of riprap check dams, and the relation- ship of type of control structure to area of watershed and resultant flow velocities are discussed.

In this paper I will attempt to present an up to date review of the type of exploration' that has previously been carried out in Alaska, discuss some of the more significant past producers and recent discoveries, and suggest some approaches to future exploration. Hopefully this information may be of some use to those parties tempting to evaluate Alaska's non ferrous, non placer, metal potential or contemplating initiation of exploration in the state. II. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Past production of non ferrous metals from lode deposits in Alaska has been meager considering the size of the state. Since there have been no major lode mines operative in Alaska since World War II, and since logistical conditions vary throughout the state, it is not possible to generalize with respect to mining costs in Alaska as compared to those in other areas. There seems to be little question, however, that a major deposit situated in a reasonably favorable location' could be profitably operating at present. Host of the known metal prospects in Alaska were discovered by early gold prospectors prior to World War I. From World War I through World War II exploration consisted chiefly of surface prospecting by prospectors on a diminished scale, as compared to the early gold rush days, drilling of some prospects by the U.S.B.M,, and occasional mine or prospect evaluations by mining companies. From the end of World War II to the present time, there has been a generally steady increase in exploration by mining companies consisting chiefly of prospect and district evaluations, large scale aerial reconnaissance programs in search of color anomalies, and regional drainage geochemical surveys. The post World War II increase in mining company exploration has not been matched by an increase in conventional surface prospecting.

A road tunnel is planned to be constructed in soft, high overburden ground of around 600 m in Japan by using the center drift advancing method. The dodging effect and early ring closure of the center drift were expected to reduce the displacement and deformation of tunnel and promote safe construction. The measurement result during construction was analyzed and those effects, which the displacement and deformation after the widening excavation decreased and its effect increased as the center drift radius increased, were confirmed by numerical analysis. Also, the effect of the early closure of center drift after widening excavation did not have much effect.

A study of coal pillar strength was done at the Beehive Mine during a three year period, 1974?1977, in a cooperative effort involving the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company (Pariseau et al, 1977). The Beehive Mine is located in the Wasatch Plateau coal field in central Utah near Orangeville, Utah, where mines are developed from outcrops between steep canyon walls with topographic relief of a kilometer or so (3,600 ft). Coal is found in Cretaceous sediments that dip gently to the west. Detailed geology of the Wasatch Plateau is described by Doelling (1972). Mining was done in the Blind Canyon seam. An earlier Deseret Mine worked the Hiawatha seam that is lower in the stratigraphic column by about 36 m (120 ft). Mining progress and ownership changes occurred in time with mine mergers and name changes eventually to the collective Des-Bee-Dove label. At the Beehive Mine, depth varied with topography but was approximately 360 m (1200 ft) on average; seam thickness varied from 1.5 to 6 m (5 to 20 ft) and usually required two passes of the miner. The mine was eventually closed and finally reclaimed in 2003. Semborski and Oakley (2006) present a brief history of the mine and describe the reclamation work in some detail. Figure 1 shows the surface topography in the vicinity of the mine that is in the center of the figure.

The San Andres mine, located in the western mountain region of Honduras, Central America, contains epithermal gold mineralization as disseminations, in quartz-chalcedonic veins and stockworks. Host rocks include a thick sequence of Cretaceous to Tertiary conglomerates, sandstones, rhyodacite tuffs and andesites. Mineralization is controlled by northwest and northeast striking, normal faults and fractures which dip steeply east and west. Currently, 500 STPD of 1. 93 Grams/MT gold ore is being open-pit mined from the conglomerate and andesite. The mine is at the west end of a mineralized zone that can be traced over an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers.

Measuring diesel particulate matter (DPM) for underground metal/nonmetal mine compliance samples is done by collecting DPM onto quartz fiber filters and analyzing the samples via NIOSH method 5040 for elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC). As part of the sampling train, two quartz fiber filters in tandem are housed inside an SKC DPM cassette that includes an impactor. The impactor segregates DPM and mine dust, and the second filter is used to correct for adsorption of vapor phase organic carbon (OC). Since the value of the second filter is subtracted from the first, the pre-existing carbon on the filter media for both filters needs to be comparable. In addition, the pre-existing carbon on the media should be low for accurate and sensitive results. However, there have been some reports of elevated OC on the filter media of the SKC DPM cassettes, which would cause the limit of detection (LOD) to be higher than reported at times. In this study, blank SKC DPM cassettes from different batches and with different expiration dates were analyzed to quantify the amount of carbon on the filter media and to determine the LOD and limit of quantification (LOQ) associated with these samplers. It was found that the organic carbon and total carbon on the media was about five times higher than quartz media used in samplers from other studies. The average TC on the blanks was 2.57 μg/cm2 with a standard deviation of 0.70, resulting in a LOD of 21 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr Time Weighted Average (TWA), and LOQ of 69 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr TWA, when using these samplers for collecting DPM. The LOD and LOQ may be improved through some sample preparation techniques. INTRODUCTION Exposure to diesel exhaust (DE) is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer and other adverse health effects (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012, Ping and Guang 2017, IARC 2012). Pronk et al. 2009 reported that the highest exposed groups to elemental carbon (EC) from DE worked in underground sites in mining and construction and they were exposed to concentrations between 27–658 μg/m3. At concentrations (1–25 μg/m3 EC) well below those observed in mining, diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures were estimated to increase the risk of cancer by levels exceeding those typically acceptable for occupational risk in the United States and Europe (Vermeulen et al. 2014). This suggests that underground miners are especially at risk because of their more substantial exposures in confined working spaces. As a protective measure, in 2001, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an 8-hr time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, 2006).

The Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System has been designed with safe production and cost savings in mind. Large open pit mines around the world have been installing semi-mobile crushers and linking them with a pit conveyor system to lower unit cost. At Morenci two 60/89 in. gyratory crushers are incorporated into the semi-mobile crushing plants. The ore is reduced to -8 in. and transported out of the mine on a 60 in. steel cable belt. This paper includes an overview of the Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System from the drawing board to open pit installation and finally a discussion on operating and repair considerations.

When the oxidized surface gold deposits are mined out, the underlying refractory gold ores become the challenge of treat­ment systems. The size and value ofrefractory gold ore reserves are a function of recovery efficiency and operating cost. The start-up of LURGI's gold roasters at NEWMONT's Carlin site has established whole ore gold roasters as a key to high gold recoveries. The ores from several deposits of the Carlin trend are roast­ed utilizing LURGI / NEWMONT technology, which has achieved gold recoveries approaching 95%. This is in dramatic contrast to the traditional perception that roasting is limited to gold recoveries in the mid 80's. Extensive investigation in pilot scale is required to achieve stable high gold recoveries for most variables in the ore body. The key question for all pilot tests is the classic question of (ROM) run of mine ore roasting or concentrate roasting. All variables are dominated by the leaching/ recovery char­acteristics of the natural ores. The degree ofrecovery improve­ment by roasting / calcining establishes the frame of the eco­nomical conditions. The full range of flexibility is required for the design of the plant to allow for ore variations in heat values, combustible con­tents, agglomeration behavior and off-gas composition. The variables in the ore body influence, therefore, the price of the plant proportionally to its flexibility. Concentrates are usually fairly stable in composition, com­bustion behavior, heat values and particle size since they are a product of the very selective flotation process. Flotation is not the successful process step when the tailings remain high in refractory gold contents.
