Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to model gas compositions in underground longwall coal mine gobs to study oxygen ingress and the development of potentially explosive methane-air mixtures that may form in the gob. The scenarios studied involve various headgate and tailgate ventilation and inertization schemes and controls. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at Colorado School of Mines have used an innovative meshing approach, allowing easy adaptation of the CFD model to adjust to a variety of bleeder and bleederless mining geometries, with gob porosity and permeability scalable over a wide range. This paper presents the methodology of the meshing and scaling approach along with recommendations for using CFD modeling in longwall gob ventilation applications. The new meshing technique was utilized to evaluate the function of a back return in a progressively sealed gob. The back return was successful in maintaining sufficient oxygen concentrations in the tailgate corner of the longwall face.

"Carbonic acid prepared on-site from carbon dioxide gas is widely used in water treatment and increasingly in some industrial applications. It has not seen extensive use in mineral processing but is an attractive alternative to sulphuric acid for pH control, with the need to counteract high pH levels caused by cemented backfill of particular interest. The fundamental chemistry of carbonate solutions as applied to flotation and flocculation circuits is described as well as plant-scale application. A project to introduce use of carbon dioxide for pH control at the Hecla Greens Creek lead-zinc-silver-gold operation is planned to begin operation in the first half of 2015. INTRODUCTION Flotation pH Control and Backfill Most sulphide flotation circuits are run at pH values ranging from slightly acid to strongly basic, with slightly basic pH the most common. Lead sulphide circuits are typically run at values from 7.5 to 9, with zinc circuits running at higher values of 9.5 to 10.5. This has been the case with ores that produce a natural pH in the circumneutral range, so that the pH needs to be raised. Although lime [Ca(OH)2] is the cheapest reagent in use to raise pH, soda ash (Na2CO3) or caustic soda (NaOH) are also employed where sodium ions in solution are preferred to dissolved calcium, or, in the case of soda ash, the presence of carbonate is desired. The use of soda ash for pH control in lead circuits has been widely recommended for many decades (1). The situation is necessarily different at operations where cemented backfill is used in underground mines (2). Backfill, whether emplaced as rammed paste or pumped slurry, is composed of mill tailings mixed with around 10% Portland or similar cement. When later mining occurs near or adjacent to previously backfilled areas, a considerable amount of old backfill is inevitably mixed with new ore and shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed can easily approach 20%, with periods of higher content not unheard of. The presence of so much backfill, with its high cement content, produces results largely indistinguishable from adding a large amount of lime to run-of-mine feed: mill pH in the grinding circuits can range above 11 and high concentrations of calcium ions are present. The need to raise pH disappears; the problem becomes to lower it."

Grinding with an electrochemically inert grinding media (i.e., high chrome white iron) shifts the pulp potentials to more oxidising conditions, increases the dissolved oxygen content and reduces the EDTA extractable iron concentration when compared with milling with electrochemically active grinding media (forged steel). These changes in pulp chemistry produce cleaner particle surfaces, reduce reagent consumption, and increase concentrate grades and recoveries. This paper presents a robust laboratory test program that not only demonstrates the changes in the pulp chemistry, but also provide an indication of the magnitude of the metallurgical improvements that are possible. While laboratory studies are interesting, the proof is in the pudding! So, the paper provides an overview of plant trials conducted at several porphyry copper operations around the world: Newmont’s Cadia and Red Chris Operations, as well as Evolution Mining’s Northparkes Operation. These successful plant trials clearly demonstrate that selection of the right grinding media alloy will yield savings in grinding media consumption and reagent consumption as well as increases in revenue through improved copper and gold recoveries. However, many of the porphyry copper mines on the Eastern Pacific are copper-molybdenum deposits. The paper presents laboratory test results for typical copper-molybdenum operations and extrapolate these numbers to what might be expected should a plant trial occur.

A number of infrastructure projects are on progress all around Greece at the moment. The common propose of these a project is the promotion of quality in: Design, construction and maintenance stages. The paper includes by special reference on two important modern transport infrastructure projects for the development of Greece and its communication with Europe and the Balkans. Their landscape types and natural vegetation, local climate, geological conditions, altitudes, aspects and soil types vary As a result, upland landscapes in particular, are endangered. Due to the complex of nature of this environment, the development and the landscape design of the projects is a high challenging task. Wherever the nature of the projects requires intervention to the environment, they intend to follow the direct restoration of landscape and method for ecological balance. The implementation of landscape design of infrastructure projects, aims at restoring the landscape affected by construction works, incorporating transport works into the landscape, emphasizing on areas of particular interest (e.g. archaeological sites), while at the same time observing the principles of an efficient operation and safe use of the alignment. Landscape design provides, among others for the protection of slopes against surface erosion and the reinforcement of their stability, the improvement of road functionality, the aesthetic improvement of the landscape, adaptation of the road landscape to the greater environment, visual guidance of the user, screening of lights of the vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the protection against wind etc. The landscape design strategy and landscape applications are specified by special landscape guidelines and specifications that can be considered as part of the sustainable development of a alignment creating a high a esthetic scenery, ensuring the security of transportation and the environmental protection.

A pilot scale study was performed to evaluate the potential for gravity concentration of gold from -13 mm (-1/2"), crushed ore from Ester Dome, Alaska. 9.04 tonnes (9.94 tons) of crushed ore were sampled and processed through a Pan-American jig -Wifley table pilot plant. Plant products were sampled for assay and material balance calculations. Gold recovery through one stage of jigging and two stages of tabling was 17.4% at a concentration ratio of 615:1. Concentrate grade was 766.3 g/tonne (22.4 oz/ton). The feed grade to the plant was calculated at 1.71 g/tonne (0.050z/ton). Jig tailings, primary table tailings and secondary table tailings grades were 1.44 g/tonne (0.042), 1.30 g/tonne (0.038), and 5.47 g/tonne (0.16 oz/ton) respectively. Significant, coarse, free milling gold values were shown to remain in the jig tailings. Concentrate mineralogy is discussed.

Introduction In view of the continuing depletion of natural resources, requirements for energy conservation, plant optimization and hazardous waste management, and environmental consciousness, recycling and secondary recovery of materials are being developed with increasing interest Many secondary recovery processes are being developed that apply mineral processing technology. Gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation have all emerged as explicit methods for recovering residual values from various process streams and hazardous constituents from waste streams. Recently, a technique for concentrating metallics has been successfully reintroduced. The concept of the alternating magnetic field eddy-current separator was developed over a century ago using rudimentary electromagnets (Patent 400317 issued to Thomas Edison on March 26, 1889). Widespread acceptance was, however, hindered by high costs, marginal results and poor economic incentives for secondary recovery. With the recent increased interest in secondary recovery and the development of high-energy rare earth permanent magnets, the eddy-current separator has now gained prominent acceptance. The separation forces imparted by an eddy current separator are the function of the magnetic field intensity and the alternating frequency of the magnetic field. The evolution of permanent magnets has provided a cost effective alternative for the generation of high-intensity magnetic fields. High-energy rare earth permanent magnets have substantially reduced the capital and operating costs over the electromagnetic circuits employed in antecedent eddy-current separators. Specifically, in recent years, the strength of permanent magnets has increased several fold with neodymium-boron-iron rare earth magnets now providing an energy product of 35 million gauss-oersted. Figure 1 shows the evolution in the strength of permanent magnets. The development of these rare earth magnets has led to the design of circuits possessing a magnetic force an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional permanent magnetic circuits. The eddy-current separator has been successfully applied in several metal sorting and recovery operations. Most common is the sorting of metal from shredded automobile scrap and municipal waste. With the advent of high-frequency, high-intensity magnetic fields, the separator has advanced to the point where it has direct application in the beneficiation of fine sized metals. Relatively fine sized (-1/4 in.) metal bearing slags and spent foundry casting sands as well as precious metal hearing electronic scrap demonstrate excellent metallurgical response to the eddy-current separator, and applications have progressed to finer materials and more selective separations. Theory Electrical currents are induced in all conductors when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. The induced current generates a magnetic field in the conductor that opposes that of the alternating magnetic field. Figure 2, is a schematic illustration of generated eddy currents. In this particular example, the alternating magnetic field is produced by a series of permanent magnets mounted on the circumference of a rotor. The permanent magnets have alternating polarity. As the rotor revolves, an alternating magnetic field is produced, and the rate of revolution determines the frequency of the alternating magnetic field. When a conductor, such as a metallic disc in the illustration, is placed in the alternating magnetic field, a closed loop current flow occurs. The current loop in the conductor produces a magnetic field that is a mirror image of the alternating magnetic field. At any point in time, the induced magnetic field in the conductor directly opposes the alternating magnetic field. This opposition of magnetic fields produces an instantaneous repulsion in the conductor. The conductor is consequently repelled from the rotor. The alternating magnetic field has no effect on nonmetallic materials as they pass through the magnetic field and discharge the rotor in a natural trajectory. [ ]

Polyacrylic acid (P AA) was evaluated as a selective flocculant for dolomite-apatite system. P AA of 4 million MW was found to flocculate both dolomite and apatite. However, their flocculation behavior was significantly different with 450,000 MW PAA which was the lowest molecular weight fraction capable of flocculation. In single mineral tests, at a dosage of 2kg/t 90% of dolomite and 35% of apatite flocculated. Selectivity was achieved in mixed mineral tests where apatite of 90% grade at 70% recovery level was obtained in the concentrate from a feed consisting of 80:20 mixture of apatite and dolomite. The dolomite rejection was about 75% which corresponds to 1% MgO in the concentrate.

The TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), an automated mineralogy system, enables fast and quantitative mineral analyses of rocks, ores, concentrates, tailings, leach residues or smelter products. It combines BSE and EDX analysis for identification and measurement of mineral concentrations, particle size distribution, and liberation/locking parameters. In addition, it can provide bright particle searches for PGM, gold-silver ores, and/or REE. With the newly developed Automated Loading System (AutoLoader), the TIMA has become the world?s first automated mineral analyzer which permits robust, continuous and unattended sample loading. With the AutoLoader (robotics) system, the TIMA has emerged as a powerful plant support instrument. It increases the sample throughput, minimizes manual labor and enables 24/7 operations. As such, it can be used in daily, continuous mineralogy for mine geology/ore control, concentrators, leach operations, and smelter support. It will also increase the capabilities of technical service centers for mining companies, commercial laboratories, large drilling programs or pilot test campaigns. In combination with a highly automated sample preparation lab (sizing, potting and polishing), TIMA technology can establish high-throughput and fast-turnaround automated mineralogy lab modules for mine-site production support.

The mine fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. The seals in conjunction with pressure balancing the seals around the perimeter of the fire area resulted -in the control of the mine fire.

A heavy mineral sand sample was tested containing 13% heavy mineral consisting of rutile, zircon, and ilmenite. Eleven tests were run at a mill site with a Mineral Deposit Limited MG 4 spiral to determine the effect of the addition 0; magnets to the spiral compared to conventional gravity separation. Different magnet configurations and field strengths were tested. Optimum results were obtained with the spiral retrofitted with magnets. The heavy mineral content of the concentrate was increased from 55.5% in the control to 64.2% with the magnets. The 8.7% improvement in heavy mineral recovery was due not only to the weakly-magnetic ilmenite, but also to increased recoveries if the non-magnetic zircon and rutile. The increased recoveries were achieved with no loss of concentrate grade.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 51,800 km2 (20,000 sq miles) and contain 45 Gt (50 billion st) of high-quality aggregate resources that have been legally designated as "regionally significant," providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and state testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine permitting decisions.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. "Wear resistant 25% Cr hard cast iron is a heterogeneous material containing 1,600 HV hard chromium carbides embedded into martensitic matrix. It is the most used cast alloy in wear operations of mining industry, chemical industry, fracking, etc. During the last decade the hard iron manufacturers increased wear resistance in the following ways: • Reduce / eliminate harmful retained austenite and chromium + carbon depleted areas especially within eutectic carbide cells. In Max5A the improved 25% Cr alloy brittle carbide eutectic cells are removed which increases toughness. • Delay delamination between chromium carbides and matrix particularly during sliding abrasion wear. Delamination commences at the weakest chromium carbide – matrix contact lines exposing chromium carbide to localized bending stresses which gradually chip carbides away. Once the chromium carbide base is removed accelerated wear degradation occurs. • Evenly randomize and avoid discontinuities in the chromium carbide network. When chromium carbides are perpendicularly positioned to the wear surface wear rate is minimized. On the contrary the highest wear rate takes place when 3D oriented chromium carbides are parallel with the wear surface. In this case chromium carbides cover top network discontinuities being just matrix supported which leads to rapid carbide cracking. The new hard iron discussed in this paper fulfils and exceeds the above requirements increasing the casting service life around 250% in various wear operations. Physical and mechanical properties of Max5A are compared with well manufactured Industry Standard 25% Cr hard iron. The paper presents practical accomplishments obtained in the USA, South America and India. INTRODUCTION The chemical composition of Max5A and Industry Standard 25% Cr are identical like specified by ASTM A532 Class III Type A requesting C = 2.0-3.3% and Cr = 23.0-30.0%. Manganese, silicon, nickel, molybdenum and copper contents are limited by maximum accepted quantities.[1] According to published data the eutectic chromium carbides chemical composition of 25% Cr hard iron is Cr = 54% and C = 8% which indicates strong depletion of chromium and carbon along chromium carbide - matrix interfaces. [2] The optimized Max5A microstructure has minimized retained austenite, is devoid of harmful carbide eutectic cells and has the most advantageous chromium carbide and secondary chromium carbide morphology. This favorable microstructure increases wear resistance, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The paper compares the Max5A microscopic features and mechanical – physical properties with similar properties of high quality Industry Standard 25% Cr."

The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is located in the area of the Upper Silesian Syncline and belongs to one of the most complex tectonic units in Europe. It occupies 5,650 km2. In 2020, there were 20 hard coal mines operating in the area. Seismological research in this area consists of observation of precursors/symptoms of shock generation and understanding of their effects. Studies (Teisseyre R. 1972, Mutke G. & Stec K. 1997, Stec K. 2007, Dubiński J. & other 2010, Idziak A. 2010) of complex impacts of rock mass provided a background for determining the conditions for the formation of exploitation and regional seismic shocks. Issues related to tectonic and exploitation stresses, successive extraction of coal seams at higher depths, operation in the vicinity of fault zones, often complex geological and organic conditions result in the activation of a discontinuity surface due to stress caused by deformation of rock layers, which, as a result, causes the emergence of strong shocks above 107 J. The article was based on analyses of extraction value, high-energy shocks, both of mining and tectonic-mining (so-called regional shocks) origin, against the background of changing operating conditions, which, as a result, creates an image of periodically changing seismic activity and location of strong shocks. Observation results show that, with an increase in exploitation depth and declining extraction, the number of strong shocks caused by tectonic stress (107 - 109 J) and exploitation stress (≥105 J) has been steadily increasing over the last 25 years.

The general theory for the description of seismic sources is briefly discussed. The effect of excavations on seismic radiation is considered. Expressions for seismic source mechanisms in terms of the geometrical and mechanical parameters of source processes are provided for the following cases: fault slip and shear failure in a confined environment, dynamic stress fracturing around a tunnel, rock fall, landslide and sudden subsidence. A classification of seismic events in mines based on source mechanisms is introduced. The classification separates blast-, slip- and crush-type events. Various approaches of analysis of source mechanisms involving forward modelling and inversion are discussed. The following examples demonstrating the utility of source mechanisms in mining are presented: forensic analysis of damaging seismic events, assessment of the increase in the depth of failure for dynamic stress fracturing around tunnels and its duration, examination of the rockmass deformation regime, assessment of deformation around tunnels using crush-type events, identification and parameterisation of weak geological structures, stress inversion from slip-type events. Finally, the requirements for seismic data to ensure high quality source mechanism solutions are briefly reviewed and future challenges in the interpretation and utilisation of seismic source mechanisms in mines are speculated on.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." Mina Maria is a high-grade, underground copper mine located in the Cananea district of Sonora, Mexico. The ore body is a massive sulfide breccia located in mountainous terrain. A major highway and an electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface ore body. The mine is operated by Minera Maria SA de CV, a joint venture company that is 51 % owned by Empresas Frisco SA de CV and 49% by Cominco Resources International Ltd. Empresas Frisco is the operating partner. Production began in October 1990. The mining method used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner and a single-boom, hydraulic jumbo mine the ore. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation. The Maria deposit is located about 40 km (25 miles) south of the Sonora-Arizona border and 11km (7 miles) northwest the city of Cananea and the Cananea Mine. The mine portal, at an elevation of 1780m (5840 ft), is on the east side of an important drainage divide. The mill site is situated about 800 m (2625 ft) northwest of the mine on the northwest side of the drainage divide where the drainage is more favorable. Its elevation is 1860 m (6100 ft) (Fig. 1).

Water-powered jackleg rock drills, introduced recently in South African mines are reported to be more efficient, faster and more comfortable to operate than conventional pneumatic drills. A comparative testing of both drill types was performed in Quebec. Based on its results and time studies done in the mines, water-powered drilling has been reviewed with regards to drilling rates achieved, infrastructure needed, side effects, health and safety considerations. This study shows that the application of water-powered drills may help increase footage drilled and improve working environment, but under specific conditions. The examples of such applications are given in the conclusions.
