Goldcorp is one of the largest gold producers in the world with projects in South, Central and North America. Goldcorp?s flagship operation is Peñasquito, a world-class, poly-metallic deposit that started production in 2010 which is one of the largest mines in Mexico. Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This technical session discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long, medium and short term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.

Longwall mining has gained acceptance as a safe method of maintaining coal production where conventional systems were unsuccessful or uneconomic due to bad roof conditions (Kuti8). One of the major problems confronting American operators involves the correct choice of equipment which should be selected to suit the local mining and geologic conditions for optimum productivity. To achieve this, factors such as rock strengths, local geology, panel geometry, and panel orientation must be examined to optimize production and minimize down time due to ground control problems. Little quantitative information is available in the literature regarding the effects of geologic conditions on American longwall operations, and past implementations of longwall systems appear to have been based largely on experience. When mining engineers are able to assess the geologic conditions both quantitatively and qualitatively, they can more fully optimize equipment selection and panel design.

The streamline method of recovery prediction reduces a two-dimensional problem to a bundle of one-dimensional ones. This paper presents the development and application of a novel scaling technique which, when used with a streamline model, causes s bundle of one-dimensional problems to further reduce to a single one-dimensional calculation. The one-dimensional calculation accounts for chemical-rock interactions and the streamline model for areal sweep. The scaling technique significantly reduces computation time, is readily modified to desk-top calculations, and can be applied to both absorbing and reacting species. The work was sponsored by the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines.

A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill.

This paper describes the derivation of a set of simultaneous algebraic equations that can be solved to produce a rigorous theoretical mass balance around solution mining wells. This mass balance can then be compared with a mass balance calculated from field measurements to provide the percentage of mass balance closure. Significant deviations from the closure can be an indication that the wells are either gaining or losing circulation fluids. The equations also provide calculations for the amount of water and dissolved mineral that accumulates in the well during the mining process, as well as the net mining rate. Equations for both single mineral mining and multiple mineral mining are discussed. They can easily be formatted into spread sheets for rapid calculation of field measurement data.

This paper summarizes the geomechanics programs conducted in two hard rock underground mining operations in the Western United States, between 1966 and 1981. The two projects were directed towards understanding the behavior of the rock masses, at the scale of the caverns. To this end, the emphasis was put on large scale field measurements, complemented by limited laboratory testing. The results of these observations were used to build realistic finite element models of the underground chambers. In the marble mine, at Crestmore, California, the models were applied to the structural optimization of the room-and-pillar pattern. In the granite mining, at Climax, Nevada Test Site, the models explained some unusual stress changes observed during excavation. Based on the large number of geomechanical techniques employed, specific conclusions and recommendations are offered regarding the quality, applicability, and usefulness of the various methods. The two case histories clearly indicate chat numerical models are extremely useful for a detailed understanding of the structural behavior of mine openings. To be realistic, these models must be based first and foremost on large scale field observations. The lessons Learned on these two projects also are directly applicable to the design and analysis of nuclear waste repositories in hard rocks such as basalt, granite, and welded tuff.

Accurate evaluation of stress and geological conditions is critical to ground control design in underground openings. For a slope entry, the problem is more difficult, because a slope will transverse through many types of strata. Over the last few years, Keystone Mining Services LLC, an affiliate company of the Jennmar Corporation, has developed a new methodology designated the “Stress, geologic and support design system (SGS).” The method analyzes the stress, geology and support design for a mine slope. The method has been successfully applied in various new slopes across the United States, and ground control plans developed using SGS methodology has helped coal companies successfully pass review and/or hearings by state and federal regulatory agencies. With a case application in the U.S. Midwest, this paper details and demonstrates the main concepts of the methodology, including (1) analysis of stress and geology and identification of strong, fair and weak zones along the slope; (2) primary and supplemental support design; (3) long-term support design in the form of steel square sets or arches and (4) validation of the support design utilizing advanced finite element computer modeling.

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. The territory of Czechoslovakia is well endowed in deposits of a variety of industrial minerals. At present, 29 different types of industrial minerals are mined from some 600 individual deposits in Bohemia and Moravia only. About half of those production centres involves structural materials like aggregate and common brick clays and loams. A significant proportion of industrial minerals produced in Czechoslovakia are exported. Destinations of main products are shown in Figure 1. Production of industrial minerals in Czechoslovakia has a long history. Glass has been produced since the 14th century, sulphuric acid since 1578, graphite since 1750, and chinaware since 1790, to name just a few; but most of the present production comes from deposits developed during the past forty years. For a variety of reasons, only about 30 per cent of registered and explored industrial minerals deposits in the country are in production (Table 1). Two of the reasons may be the complexity of processing or conflicting interests of parties involved, but lack of market research, investment funds, or processing capacity have also had an impact on the level of utilization of the resource base.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has undertaken the Lake Mathews Outlet Facilities project to replace the existing outlet facilities. In the late1990s, consulting engineers for the District determined that the Lake Mathews Outlet Facilities were susceptible to a catastrophic failure during a seismic event. To ensure a reliable supply of water to Metropolitan’s customers in the Los Angeles area, the District decided to construct new outlet facilities. This Project consists of excavating a large diameter junction shaft, a 6.10 m (20 ft.) horseshoe tunnel, three short 4.88 m(16 ft.) horseshoe bypass tunnels, and a large excavation within a cofferdam that were all driven in difficult rock conditions. Additionally, a new concrete outlet tower was constructed and connected to the existing tunnel by the new bypass tunnels and through the junction shaft. The J.F. Shea Co., Inc. of Walnut, California, is currently finishing the construction of the Lake Mathews Outlet Facilities Project for Metropolitan. The large diameter junction shaft is 50.60 m (166 ft.) deep, excavated 16.15 m (52 ft.) in diameter and lined with a61 cm (2´-0?) thick steel reinforced concrete lining to a finished diameter of 14.63 m (48ft.). The shaft was excavated full face with one stationary shaft three-boom jumbo, modified for the large diameter. The shaft also consists of four sets of gate guides extruding from the shaft wall towards the center of the shaft that provide the ability to operate up to four mechanical gates at any time, to open or close each tunnel. This paper will present the junction shaft excavation and concrete construction techniques, including the innovative slip form method utilized to construct the junction shaft.

Storing natural gas in solution mined salt cavities appears to be one of the more promising methods being considered by some major gas transmission companies for meeting peak demands. Historically, these companies have been faced with the problem of meeting peak demands when the source of natural gas is located hundreds of miles from the marketing area. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation's position was further complicated because some of its offshore Gulf Coast gas supply wells may have to be shut in during hurricane alerts. Transco's solution was to construct. solution mined salt storage caverns adjacent to its pipeline near Eminence, Mississippi. (See Figure 1.) In 1965, Fenix & Scisson, Inc., was engaged by Transco to evaluate the feasibility of storing natural gas in caverns dissolved from salt at selected locations along Transco's pipeline to the East Coast. In June of that year a report was submitted to Transco concluding that this proposal was feasible and recommending several potential sites for storage development. Additional engineering and geological studies followed and in March 1968 the Eminence Salt Dome site was selected and storage construction began that year.

In spite of the importance of the presence of pyrite in the flotation of sulphide ores, not many studies have been made from the electrochemical point of view. It is generally recognized that the oxidation of sulphide minerals is one of the most Important factors among those which affect the floatability of sulphide minerals. The concept that the presence of oxygen is essential to the flotation of sulphide minerals is supported by numerous experimental results (1). The presence of oxygen in sulphide minerals- aqueous solution systems would affect the electrochemical behaviour of sulphide minerals and subsequently lead to more complicated reactions on the surface of sulphides. Actually some of the phenomena observed in sulphide flotation are deemed to be more appropriately explained from the electrochemical point of view. The author and co-workers have studied extensively the electrode reactions of pyrite and its significance in sulphide flotation. The results have been partly published elsewhere (2-7). In this paper, the author discusses the electrochemical nature of pyrite, and the three different phenomena observed in pyrite flotation: (1) Xanthate¬dixanthogen system on pyrite, (2) Flotation of complex sulphide ores containing pyrite and (3) Depressive mechanisms of pyrite with cyanide. The phenomenon which has been known as an iron contamination effect due to steel grinding media on sulphide flotation is also explained from the electrochemical aspect. However, this problem is not directly concerned with pyrite, and it will be discussed elsewhere (8).

Spontaneous combustion caused by the movement of air through the waste is a major problem. Combat methods attempt to exclude oxygen rich air, but little is known about airflow through the waste. The use of a tracer gas technique to monitor the flow of nitrogen from an injection hole during inertisation is described. Correlations are drawn between barometric pressure changes and the nitrogen entering the waste. As no information was obtained about airflow and oxidation zones, a second experiment was conducted to sample from the waste, but the results were inconclusive. A finite element method developed to model the pressure and airflow distribution, under steady state and nitrogen injection conditions is outlined

This review provides a new and comprehensive summary on studying colloidal interactions encountered in mineral processing with representative examples for critical information, which are of great scientific and practical importance. Colloidal interactions play a vital role in mineral processing, including grinding, physical separation (particularly flotation), dewatering and tailings management (Fig. 1). Despite great energy input in comminution to liberate valuables from gangues, hetero-coagulation between valuables and gangues would prevent the separation of valuables from gangues. On the other hand, selective coagulation/flocculation to increase the size of desired fine particles could enhance physical separation and dewatering, while dispersion is needed for fine grinding. The importance of colloidal interactions is becoming increasingly significant as we process ever more finely disseminated low-grade ores as a result of inevitable depletion of high-grade ore deposits. To control the state of colloidal dispersions by creating favorable conditions, it is of paramount importance to study colloidal interactions in a relevant system and understand underlying mechanisms. 

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. To develop the model of the ventilation system with the fire in this validation study, the following adjustments were made: (1) flow and gas distribution in the entire ventilation network, and (2) fire parameters matching the data recorded by the monitoring system. After close correlations between simulation and real data were achieved, additional analysis of the ventilation system with the mine fire was performed. Presented and discussed in this paper are the following stages of the fire at the Pattiki Mine: (1) early fire (before the fire was detected), (2) preparation for and fire fighting with water, (3) fire sealing, and (4) fire extinguishing. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.

The dissolution kinetics of gold in iodide solutions with oxygen in an autoclave was investigated. The leaching process was described by a gas-liquid-solid heterogeneous reaction. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, and concentration of lixiviants on the overall leaching rate was investigated. It was found that the dissolution of gold was limited by a heterogeneous chemical reaction. The apparent activation energy was measured to be 34.7-54.3 kJ/mol under the conditions studied. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the kinetic model proposed.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arimco Mining Corporation's (CAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au?Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in the country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon a region previously unassociated with porphyry-style mineralization. Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.41 % copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37,000 hectare FTAA has identified a further sixteen potential porphyry-related deposits. A new mining law was passed in March 1995 but prior to that CAMC had the first Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) granted by the Philippine government allowing 100% foreign ownership of mining projects.

ABSTRACT The pervasiveness of high-fidelity video games raises expectations of quality, detail, and lighting in virtual reality (VR) applications. However, high-quality models of mining equipment and environments are often not readily available, and developers may not be familiar with the latest techniques, such as physically based rendering (PBR). Because a consistent aesthetic is critical for maintaining immersion and controlling visual stimuli in research as well as in training, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) created an asset development workflow. This paper details this workflow, including precision modeling and PBR techniques as well as a rigorous review process. It also describes lessons learned in the creation of photorealistic VR assets. BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) describes the simulated experience generated by an assemblage of hardware and software that are used to immerse the user. Over many years VR developers targeted the development of virtual environments (VE) toward various purposes: entertainment, the treatment of phobias [1], rehabilitation [2], and training [3]. A large part of the VE development includes digital assets, where digital assets refer to the non-programmed elements including 3D models, audio, and user interface. Because vision provides nearly 10Mbps of data [4] and accounts for the majority of all sensory input combined [5], a focused effort on asset appearance in VEs is warranted. Furthermore, research has shown that higher-resolution imagery increases search performance and training transfer, necessitating high-fidelity assets [6, 7]. In addition to being visually appealing, it is important that the assets and environment are also dimensionally accurate and consistent in order to elicit appropriate responses from the end users as they interact with and among these items [8, 9]. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed VEs and digital assets under several research projects over the course of the last two decades [10, 11, 12, 13]. This work has provided researchers with a strong knowledge base for digital asset development. However, the assets themselves have had limited reuse value. Due to the extended timeframes and limited scope of these projects, the previously developed assets are not consistent in visual quality and dimensional accuracy. Moving forward, researchers wanted to minimize future development time and use of resources as well as adopt new asset development tools and game engine technology. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to document a new asset development workflow including geometry, materials, UV layout, and shader implementation combined with review steps in order to produce high-fidelity simulation assets that are accurate with consistent characteristics, using repeatable methodologies that are well documented.

Modern mine ventilation systems have grown rapidly in recent years both in tern of its complexities as well as its value for human health and safety. Although computer models are now available to help the design and operation of mine ventilation systems, considerable differences often exist between the computer based predictions and practical results. Research conducted to compare computer result with practical measurements made in ventilation circuits simulated in a physical model seems to confirm such differences. It is concluded that although a mine ventilation computer model is a very powerful tool, it can be utilized to its full potential only after more reliable input data are developed.

Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.
