Engineers at a West Virginia coal preparation plant owned by one of the nation's largest coal producers sought a fire suppression system for the plant's MCC and cable spreading rooms. Officials considered the traditional options of water-based sprinklers, dry chemical, and clean agent systems; however, each of those options presented challenges. Sprinklers can damage electrical equipment, proper delivery of the agent and adequate coverage/protection can be an issue with dry chemical systems, and clean agent systems require room integrity. An alternative to traditional systems was discovered in the Victaulic Vortex Fire Suppression System. The first hybrid inert gas/water mist system (FM 5580), Vortex adequately addressed these concerns. The system, which deploys a high-velocity, low-pressure mixture of water and nitrogen, is not damaging to electrical equipment and extinguishes fires in open, ventilated areas. This is one of the first installations of the Vortex system in a prep plant, and is a compelling example of how new technology can overcome the challenges of traditional technologies. The paper will detail plant specs, situation, and system evaluation, selection, and configuration.

How to connect an effluent conveyance tunnel to riser shaft and diffuser arms of an outfall system is dictated by the ground conditions, which ideally include rock or soil strata of low permeability. Where such favorable conditions are beyond reach, both the complexity of designing and the risk of constructing this crucial system connection increase disproportionally. This paper describes the considerations that went into the approach of connecting a 5-m-diameter TBM drive with the in-river riser shaft of the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the highly permeable Fraser River sands at hydrostatic pressures exceeding 3 bar.

Agrico Chemical Company, as we presently know it, is the result of the coming together of several different fertilizer operations. The Williams Companies, our parent organization, first entered the fertilizer business in 1971, when it acquired the fertilizer operations of the Gulf Oil Company. This gave us, among other things, the manufacturing facility at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. In 1972, The Williams Companies acquired Agrico Chemical Company from Continental Oil Company, bringing in a manufacturing facility and phosphate mines at Pierce Florida. Our Florida Mines are in the region commonly known as the Bone Valley Region of Florida. The majority of the phosphate fertilizer produced in the United States utilizes rock mined in this region. The Donaldsonville Plant was originally built in 1967-68 on the site of the old Faustina Plantation at an approximate cost of $80,000,000. (This plant is commonly referred to as our Faustina Plant.) Until such time as Agrico was acquired from Continental Oil, the Donaldsonville Facility was solely used to upgrade phosphoric acid into finished granular products.

The mechanistic or phenomenological approach to ball milling involving the, concepts of particulate selection and breakage functions with particle population balance models has been well established over the past decade (c.f., the review articles by Austin (1) Herbst and Mika, (2) and Snow (3)). Initial efforts to apply this approach concentrated on batch milling, but since most milling in industrial practice is continuous, much recent research has been directed to extending this approach to continuous milling. The primary difference between batch and continuous milling processes is the relative importance of material mixing and transport in the mill in the latter case. Much analytical (4-8) and some experimental (9-15) work on the effect of mill mixing and transport on milling has been recently reported. Much of the analytical work has naturally centered around extension of the well-developed concepts that have been applied to chemical reactors, (16-18) Fortunately, it has been found(1) that most milling processes are analogous to first-order chemical reactions so that the combined effects of material transport and reaction (breakage) can be handled by the relatively simple segregated flow concepts. Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and :ability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

The importance of optimizing equipment replacement decisions becomes more critical each year due to the rising costs of buying new equipment versus maintaining old equipment. Replacing equipment when it is physically worn out, or replacing it too soon or too late relative to its Economic Life (when it is economically worn out), is very costly. After extensive literature review and research, Kennecott has developed its Equipment Replacement Guide (ERG) system which identifies, evaluates, and justifies the replacement of uneconomical equipment. The system considers such critical factors as inflation, decreasing work capability, increasing maintenance/repair and operating costs, taxes, time value of money, return on investment, salvage value, and investment tax credit. These factors are used in a system of equations which balance the costs of new equipment against the total operating costs of old equipment. The solution of the equations determines the Economic Life of equipment. Replacement of equipment at the determined Economic Life will earn the specified, required return on investment that is used in the calculation of the Economic Life.

During the last decade there were pronounced changes in the competitive pattern of the fossill fuels It is proposed to trace these trends and describe inter-fuel competition, first as it relates to the economy as a whole and then more specifically to examine competition of the fossil fuels as these share the electric utility market. Table 1, Competitive Fuels and Water Power Used in the United States, 1950-1959, shows the growth in the consumption of coal, oil, gas and water power 'during the past decade. Uses which are not directly competitive among the fuels, such as tractor fuel, carbon black, and consumption of petroleum products in the making of synthetic rubber, have been excluded from these statistics. The experience of the three fossil fuels in competition since 1950 shows natural gas expanding more rapidly, than oil by roughly twice as much, 219.0 percent' compared to 124.1 percent growth in B.t.u.s of oil consumed in the ten-year period. Percentagewise, water power little more than held its own, and coal, including anthracite, actually decreased more than one-fifth.

In the summer of 1990, a study was conducted to document large tractor (i.e., Caterpillar Dl1N) utilization in surface coal mining. The tractors were found to be utilized as primary production machines and in combination systems with blast casting and draglines and blast casting and excavator/truck systems. In addition, dozers were used to prebench ahead of a primary dragline system. The study also established ranges and averages for Dl1N operating costs and mechanical availability. Based on simulated production of various tractor dozing applications, the potential for low cost coal stripping was suggested (Hrebar, 1991). A follow-up study, also funded by Caterpillar Inc., was conducted in the summer of 1991 to determine actual production rates in two dozer stripping applications. These actual production rates would then serve as a foundation for estimates of stripping costs. This paper presents the results of the studies in a contour and a cast application.

The LIFE-Environment Demonstration Project ?Treating Waste for Restoring Land Sustainability?(www.bangor.ac.uk/ies/TWIRLS/TWIRLS_home.htm), a project initiated by the University of Wales, Bangor, UK in which NAGREF is a partner, aims to demonstrate the effective use of industrial and municipal wastes for the remediation of post-industrial and degraded sites in urban and rural sites. Within the framework of this project, a schist quarry, which is located in a mountainous area near Athens and which has been exploited in the past for cement production, was chosen for bioremediation experiments in collaboration with the quarry owners, TITAN Cement Co. Three different areas within the quarry were selected representing 3 different topographies. These were a compacted, flat area with seasonal water logging (untreated control), a gently sloping, land formed area; and artificially created mounds of overburden rock material formed on the flat area. Compost produced from mixing municipal waste, green waste and digested sewage sludge at the recycling plant of the Association of Communities and Municipalities in the Attica Region (ACMAR), near Athens was used for nutrient amendment. Six replicates of three treatments were applied with varying compost application rates in order to examine the effect of the addition of organic matter in the establishment of suitable vegetation on the infertile schist material. Pine trees (Pinus halepensis Mill.), 4 per replicate, were pocket planted in a volume of 3 liters of schist or schist-compost mixture (1:2 and 2:1). Tree height, main stem diameter and branching were measured following planting and these measurements will be repeated annually to test hypotheses that compaction and water logging reduce Pine establishment by natural regeneration and that nutrient addition improves establishment of pine on schist waste. The availability of nutrients and variation in other soil physico-chemical parameters will also be studied in each treatment and related to plant growth. As a demonstration project, open days are planned on the site for the public and official bodies involved in municipal waste handling and other relevant areas. The aim of these will be to illustrate the effective re-use of waste for the sustainable restoration of post-industrial and degraded land.

The effective employment of a pretensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut preload. In this paper, a load indicator washer (LIW) able to withstand an assigned static loading as well as provide an appropriate pretension is presented. The different LIW breadths are numerically analyzed with ABAQUS finite-element code to estimate deformation when a designated 60 kN preload is applied. The numerical simulation employs the bilinear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nut-LIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, long-term relaxation effect on bolt pretension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW predetermined deformation is the bolt pretension. It is drawn from the simulation results that LIWs with thicknesses of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 mm are completely flattened when subjected to 28, 42.5, 65, 76 and 88 kN preloads, respectively.

Flow in heaps and dumps is a two-phase flow phenomenon, though for many applications it could be simplified as unsaturated flow. Unlike saturated flow (typical of ground water flow), where permeability is independent of other hydraulic parameters, unsaturated flow permeability depends on the degree of saturation and/or on capillary pressure. Several recent field studies suggest that flows in heaps and dumps tend to concentrate in preferred pathways, bypassing much of the ore. Different preferential flow phenomena are triggered, promoted and influenced by different heap structures, by pretreatment, by the composition of the leach solution and by application rates and schedules. The structure of heaps and dumps is determined and affected by every stage of their construction -from blasting to crushing to conveying and stacking of the material. History of heap construction and operation combined with monitoring, mapping and certain field tests can reveal patterns of flow and transport in a given heap and can shed light on the physical mechanisms behind it. Such insight can provide a first cut on heap leaching enhancement by either eliminating or bypassing physical barriers to flow and leaching. Based on the understanding of the heap structure, advanced flow and transport models can be constructed and further enhance the insight. This insight is essential for understanding cause and effect and can provide a basis for decision making. Further, based on the physically-based models, an intelligent control agent, such as MRDS1, can learn and build a self-learning representation (or a model) of the complex heap leaching system, followed by dynamic optimization and planning of heap leaching and heap rinsing.

An operating problem encountered at the Moa Bay operation in Cuba, where nickeliferous laterite ore is processed by sulfuric acid pressure leaching, is the formation of alunite and hematite deposits on the autoclave walls. The AMPX Extractive Research & Development, Inc., metallurgical laboratory (Golden, Colorado) has made substantial improvements in the Moa Bay process in the areas of metal recovery, energy consumption, and feed versatility. One of the advantages of AMAX's process is its ability to treat substantial portions of nickel- and magnesium-rich serpentine while maintaining acid utilization efficiency. The process minimizes scale formation by combining staged acid addition with vigorous agitation and 270°C operation, but does not eliminate scaling. This paper describes how advantage can be taken of MgSO4?XH20 precipitation both to inhibit alunite scaling and to disperse hematite scale within the MgSO4?XH20 matrix. Cooling the autoclave from its 270°C operating temperature down to 180°C takes advantage of the reverse solubility of magnesium sulfate. The magnesium dissolves, liberating entrained hematite, thus providing a means for control of autoclave scale with minimum process disruption.

The dressing of Bolivian tin ores has been done up to the present by classical. gravity methods, taking advantage of the high specific gravity of cassiterite compared with that of the accompanying gangue. For this purpose, jigs and shaking tables are used in the treatment of the various size fractions in which the ore is classified. Bolivian ores are mainly of the vein type and, to obtain a reasonable separation, crushing and several stages of grinding are necessary during the process to substantially liberate the cassiterite from the gangue. Gravity processes for cassiterite are effective for sizes down to 200 mesh. Below this size the efficiency of the gravity methods falls off very rapidly with increasing fineness of the mineral grains. The conventional treatment for this material is desliming followed by tabling on shaking tables various other types of machines have been designed for the gravity treatment of these fine particles but they have had limited success. Bolivian ores contain an appreciable amount of minus 200 mesh material constituted by "primary fines" caning from the mine itself, and "secondary fines" originated during the crushing and grinding necessary for liberation of the difficulty in the treatment of these fine particles is one of the causes why the recovery of tin in concentrates is only of around 50% in the mines owned by Corporacidn Minera de Bolivia, the State owned enterprise. Approximately six billion gallons of combined sewage are discharged annually into Willamette River and Columbia Slough through Portland’s combined sewer system. The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit (CSCC) is an important element of mandated Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) abatement. It includes2,548m (8,361 ft.) of 3.7 m. (12 ft.) internal diameter tunnel. The CSCC alignment traverses the UP railroad, Columbia Boulevard and parallels an old sewer. Geologic conditions include river alluvium and fine to coarse-grained flood deposits containing cobbles and boulders. This paper describes design and construction of a tunnel in soft-ground, with shallow cover and close to an old concrete sewer.

"The United States’ supply of critical minerals has been a concern and a source of potential strategic vulnerabilities for U.S. economic and national security interests for decades (for example, see Strategic and Critical Minerals Stockpiling Act, 1939). More recently, with the rapid increase in the types of materials being used in advanced technologies (Fortier et al. 2018a), and geopolitical events surrounding the supply of rare earth elements (Ting and Seaman, 2013), among other developments, the critical minerals issue has again achieved a high level of visibility within the U.S. government (Executive Order 13817 (2017)).In this paper, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides an overview of its ongoing focus on critical minerals through the agency’s core competencies in mineral information, mineral resource assessments, geologic and topographic mapping, geophysical surveys and mineral resource research. Aspects of the multifaceted critical minerals issue addressed here include:• Identifying minerals that meet the definition of “critical” provided in Executive Order 13817.• U.S. net import reliance for critical mineral raw materials.• Current status of domestic critical mineral resource assessments.• Current status of topographic and geologic mapping, and geophysical survey coverage of the United States.• The Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) to support future critical mineral exploration.• Critical mineral potential of waste streams from extractive industries.Identifying minerals as criticalU.S. government agencies and other organizations use a number of existing definitions and criteria to identify a mineral or mineral material as critical, strategic or otherwise important. The executive order defined a “critical mineral” to be “(i) a nonfuel mineral or mineral material essential to the economic and national security of the United States, (ii) the supply chain of which is vulnerable to disruption, and (iii) that serves an essential function in the manufacturing of a product, the absence of which would have significant consequences for our economy and national security.” This definition is broadly consistent with that defined by the National Research Council (NRC, 2008) and may be summarized as “essential in use” and “subject to disruption of supply.” Virtually all of the dozens of critical minerals studies conducted since the 2008 NRC report have used some variation of this same definition (Hayes and McCullough, 2018)."

Controlling worker dust exposure on longwall mining systems is difficult because the working face area serves as an immediate return during the mining cycle and the amount of airborne dust generated is directly related to production. Since improvements in longwall mining technology have significantly boosted production levels, additional technology is needed to control the airborne respirable dust generated at present and future production levels. One concept to reduce longwall worker's dust exposure is to maintain two splits of air at the face -- a clean intake split in the workers walkway, and a return (dusty) split over the face conveyor. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently investigated a concept to overcome the visibility handicap of face partitions by utilizing a permeable polyester mesh. The mesh material was anticipated to provide adequate air-splitting capabilities as long as the pressure differential between the face and worker walkway was minimal. Initial testing of this concept at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory showed that notable reductions could be achieved with a 1/8 in (3.18 mm) and 1/16 in (1.59 mm) mesh opening size. Dust reductions at 100 ft (30.5 m) and 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream of source were 58 and 36 pct, respectively, for the 1/8 in mesh and 79 and 55 pct, respectively for the 1/16 in mesh. Longwall application of the 1/8 in mesh showed similar results to the Lake Lynn Laboratory tests. A flame retardant mesh was used underground with portable lighting mounted on the shearing machine for face side lighting.

"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. The author has known Professor Wadsworth since the 1960s, when interest in the application of microbial technology for metallurgical processes was beginning its rapid rise. The development of bioleaching and mineral biooxidation was advanced, in part, by Wadsworth's belief in the potential for its application, as well as by his numerous contributions to the understanding of the fundamentals of hydro-metallurgy. Wadsworth is recognized for fostering research and development of the field and adding credibility to microbiological-based metallurgical processes, now often referred to as biohydrometallurgy. This Wadsworth Award is recognition of the field of biohy-drometallurgy. It is an honor to serve as a representative for all those individuals involved in research and commercial development of this technology. Modern commercial application of biohydromctallurgy began with the bioleaching of copper from submarginal-grade. run-of-mine material. Kennecott Copper successfully developed this process in the 1950s at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. Other mining operations around the world followed Kennecott's lead. Today, dump bioleaching remains a very low-cost process for scavenging copper from rock that cannot be economically processed by any other method. Despite the commercial success of dump bioleaching, little effort has been made to enhance the micro Biological component of this leach process. Expansion of biohydro metallurgy into recovery of other metals did not occur until the mid-1980s, when the first commercial plant for the pretreatment of refractory gold-bearing concentrate was commissioned at the Fairview operation in south Africa. Now, processes for copper bioleaching and refractory gold pretreatment are engineered specifically to promote the activity of the microorganisms. This paper reviews the current state of commercial applications of biohydrometallurgy. It examines potential future developments and portrays the role of the microbiologist in facilitating continued growth and commercial acceptance of the technology. The commercia1 examples in this paper illustrate the expansion of microbial processing in the mining industry during the last 20 years. "Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. This can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the relative wealth, or ‘Standard of Living’ as measured by the GDP/capita, of regions around the world. Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australasia iv are seen to have the highest standard. Thanks to today’s global communications systems, regions with relatively low GDP/capita are well aware of ‘how others live’ – and eager to emulate them."
