In this paper, electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed along with the role of galvanic interactions in bioleaching. Polarization studies using a manganese nodule slurry electrode system indicated that the maximum dissolution of iron and manganese due to electrochemical reduction occurred at negative DC potentials of -600 and -1,400 mV(SCE). Electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans at the above negative applied DC potentials resulted insignificant dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt in IMH2S04 and in sulfuric acid solution at pH 0.5 and 2.0. Mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed. Galvanic leaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of externally added pyrite and pyrolusite for enhancement of dissolution was also studied. Various electrochemical and biochemical parameters were optimized, and the electroleaching and galvanic processes thus developed are shown to yield almost complete dissolution of all metal values. This electrobioleaching process developed in the laboratory may be cost effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. "After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

The Helvetia copper deposit is a large undeveloped Laramide porphyry copper system located in the Santa Rita Mountains, Pima County, Arizona. This porphyry copper system consists of four areas of copper mineralization: Rosemont, Peach-Elgin, Broadtop Butte, and Copper World. Asarco refers to the four areas collectively as the "Helvetia Deposit". Mineralization and alteration are primarily contact pyrometasomatic, and zoning of hydrothermal alteration and sulfide mineral assemblages are similar to those observed at the Twin Buttes and Mission copper mines located approximately 32 km west of Helvetia. Asarco acquired the Helvetia Deposit in 1988 and has continued the exploration and development effort since then. A considerable amount of excellent geological work has been completed in the area but little information has been published on developments since the mid-1950's. The geology of the deposit as developed by numerous geologists over the past 75 years and the large, bulk tonnage low grade copper deposits outlined in recent years will be briefly reviewed in this paper.

The peatlands of the U.S. and Canadian parts of the Upper Great Lakes region have a long history of modest utilization in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and as natural undisturbed areas. Only recently have they been assessed as potential sources of non-renewable or renewable energy. This new interest in peatlands, should current proposals be realized, might mean the commitment of millions of acres to energy production purposes. The magnitude alone of this potential utilization of peatland signals the possibility of substantial environmental disturbance, local resource shortages, resource use conflicts, and social and economic change. Peat- land resource managers in the region are just beginning to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of large-scale peatland utilization. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has made a considerable effort to study peat resource management issues and will shortly make recommendations to the state legislature regarding utilization alternatives. What follows is a general discussion of peatland utilization and management trends in the region with a focus on Minnesota and its peatland management efforts.

Coal-derived flue gases contain CO2/SO2 and these contaminants preferably have to be captured by cheap sorbents. This remediation approach is from the standpoint of addressing issues such as global warming, acid rain and development of Advanced Power Generation Systems and to realize the economic gain as well. Conventional and existing dry scrubbing technologies use regenerable sorbents which are pollutant specific and require expensive stabilizers in order to attain versatility. This paper discusses the use a novel class of sorbents prepared from the heavy metal contaminated Berkeley Pit water (Butte, Montana) by a proprietary process developed at The University of Nevada, Reno. These sorbents are activated mixed spinel ferrite (MxFe,_X04)' Preliminary experimental results show that the sorbents have good desulfurization and CO2 decomposition capacities. The decomposition effectiveness of these mixed spinel ferrites was studied at 300°C and compared against the synthetic magnetite obtained from ferrous sulfate solution in our laboratory. The results indicated that the mixed spinel ferrite had good affinity for the adsorption and decomposition. The CO2 decomposition data of both sorbents fitted the first order reaction kinetics. Even though the surface area of the magnetite was higher than that of mixed spinel ferrite, the CO2 decomposition rate of the mixed spinel ferrite was estimated to be 2.5 times higher than that of magnetite under identical conditions. The carbon analysis deposited on the sample indicated that the CO2 was 100% decomposed into carbon and other carbon! hydrogen compounds by the mixed spinel ferrite whereas the conversion was 43% by the magnetite. In terms of specific adsorption of carbon, ferrite was 3-5 times more efficient than magnetite.

Creede, one of the younger major mining camps in Colorado, grew spectacularly to a town of eight or ten thousand people in the early 1890's following discovery of rich ore in the Amethyst and Last Chance mines. Gross metal production in gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc rose to a maximum of four million dollars a year in 1893. Annual production dropped to much lower figures and ranged between one hundred and five hundred thousand dollars per year during the period from 1914 to 1940. Production reached a gross of eight hundred thousand to one million dollars per year by the mid-1950's. In the years 1953 to 1957, Steven and Ratté conducted geologic investigations which were carried on as part of a cooperative program of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Colorado Metal Mining Fund Board. In a preliminary report on the Creede District, Steven and Ratté suggested that the Bulldog Mountain Fault Zone appeared to be a favorable structure to prospect. On the basis of that recommendation, augmented by independent work done by Manning W. Cox, the property was acquired, transferred to Bulldog Mountain, Inc. and financed by an O. M. E. loan. Late in 1963 Homestake Mining Company, under a Lease and Option Agreement, backed the venture by furnishing additional funds plus management.

A number of recent studies 1-4 suggest that steelmaking expansion might be achieved more economically by a combination of the prereduction furnace and the electric steelmaking furnace rather than through new blast furnace construction. Supergrade concentrates would be the first step in an evolving technology which bypasses the blast furnace and in which the concentrates are first made into pre¬reduced pellets and then used directly in electric steelmaking, Prereduced pellets made from superconcentrates should not only be competitive with scrap, but should be a preferred feed for the electric furnace because of the absence of such residual elements as copper and nickel. Furthermore, geographic areas remote from present steelmaking centers may find the electric furnace to be an economical method of providing local steel requirements. The development of successful methods of producing superconcentrates may also be expected to find application to conventional blast furnace burdens. The need for methods of increasing grade of domestic concentrates will become increasingly urgent in the face of competition from high grade imports. Only a small percentage of domestic iron ore production can qualify as superconcentrates, (Superconcentrates for the purpose of this investigation are limi¬ted to those concentrates which contain a maximum of 2 percent S'02). During the last several years the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines has directed research efforts to develop methods of manufacturing superconcentrates from present standard grade products by cationic flotation, screening, and magnetic separation.

As a by-product of the steelmaking industry rich in iron and zinc, electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) landfill disposal is restricted in many countries due to the metal lixiviation risks. Several approaches have been examined to recycle or reuse EAFD. Hydrometallurgical methods mainly include the preparation of pregnant acid leached solution (PLS) using inorganic acids followed by selective metal recovery using different methods. We herein proposed a hydrometallurgical process initiated by acid leaching and finalized by thermal treatment to produce nano-ZnO from EAFD. At the condition of this study, only 67% of zinc was leached by sulfuric acid from EAFD into PLS while 98% of surplus leached iron was removed through precipitation by sodium hydroxide. Additional purification of iron removed PLS was accomplished using di-2 ethylhexyl phosphoric acid to extract Zn+2. The addition of ammonium hydroxide to purified PLS provided (Zn(OH)2)3(ZnSO4)(H2O)5 as the final precursor for nano-ZnO that ultimately transformed to nano-ZnO (60 ± 6 nm particle size) at 850 °C. The achieved results were scrutinized through various tests and analyses including TEM, XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA.

The exploitation of mineral deposits for economical recovery of the contained minerals has many aspects differing from other industrial or manufacturing operations. However, generally accepted principles of good organization and management applicable to industrial plants are similarly effective for mineral processing plants. A more detailed coverage of organizational structures and management techniques than is possible in this section can be obtained from many good books devoted wholly to these subjects. A few of the more readily available examples are included in the general references at the beginning of this section. The field of mineral processing encompass a wide variety of minerals, processes, flowsheets, equipment, and end products. Mineral deposits, mines, and related beneficiation plants are found in all parts of the globe, often in remote locations with no nearby support for supplies and maintenance. Available labor is frequently unskilled, sometimes primitive, and often untrained without machine and hand tools or heavy equipment experience. Such situations call for well- planned and conducted training programs covering the full range of mining-type job skills. "Improved safety and more environmentally friendly operation are basic advantages of mechanical excavation over the drill and blast method. Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are one of the types of these machines which have recently been increased use in Turkey. The excavated hole with RBM is more stable than other methods and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. This paper is a summary of the performance of a RBM in the Balya PB-Zn Mine in Turkey. Length and diameter of the ventilation shaft are 200 m and 2.4 m, respectively. The geological and geotechnical characteristics of the strata excavated in the mine are first given and later the validity of a model developed to predict the machine performance is discussed. It is believed that the results of this study and the model given to estimate the performance of the RBM will be useful guide for future applications. INTRODUCTION Raise boring technology was developed to meet the demands of the mining industry, but has also found numerous applications in tunneling or infrastructure projects for ventilation purposes. Raise boring machine uses a small diameter drill rod, around 230-350 mm to drill a pilot hole down to the required depth up to around 2000 m. Once the pilot hole has been drilled to the desired depth, a reamer of up to 9 m diameter is attached to the drill rod. The reamer is then pulled back up to the upper level, creating a round shape. Continues operation provides a faster advance rate than other methods. RBMs are suitable both in hard and soft rock. The flexibility in different angles and diameters is a great advantage compared to drill and blast excavation method. RBM creates a shaft with smooth walls which usually does not require lining. The hole is more stable than a drilled and blasted method and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. Raise boring is convenient method in competent rock; however several problems are faced in geological formations where geological discontinuities are dominant. Moreover, assembly and disassembly time may be long in some cases. The performance and operational parameters of the excavating machine should be predicted prior to starting the excavation operations in order to fulfill the economic requirements of the project. In the light of this fact, the main objective of this investigation is to summarize a case study on raise boring machine performance and suggest a new model based on laboratory test results. First, general description of the mine and project are provided. Then, the physical and mechanical characteristics of the samples taken from project area are discussed. In the third section, performance and operational parameters of RBM are investigated to understand the machine behavior in different rock characteristics and also to collect a useful database for further investigation. In the fourth section, a new model for performance estimation of RBM are recommended."

It is difficult to fail if one has a great deposit, but 'great' ore deposits are few and far between. More often one hears that a mine has been 'made' rather than found. This is particularly true for industrial minerals and for gold and silver projects. Even the best ore deposit can often be improved through innovative technology, e.g. the Escondida copper mine in Chile, where a novel ammonia leaching process is yielding a fabulous DCFROI. Consider the case of a small high grade gold mine. Previous owners had found inadequate reserves to justify the capital cost of developing the mine and installing a mill. Lower grade resources had been ignored because the owners were looking only for grades that would be high enough to support a small underground mine and mill. Randol, assisted by Kappes Cassiday & Associates, determined that the ore was amenable for heap leaching. Secondly, existing drillhole data indicated a significant lower grade resource that appears to be accessible to open pit mining methods. In this case, the appropriate selection of off-the­shelf technologies has literally 'made' the mine. At the Randol at Vancouver '94 conference on Latin American Mining Opportunities, papers on innovative technolo­gies for exploration, mining, metallurgy and environmental management were presented in non-technical terms for managers and resource developers. It was surprising how few of the exploration- and finance-oriented delegates participated in these sessions. Numerous technologies were presented that could be added to one's arsenal of tricks to 'make' a mine, i.e. to convert resources into ore reserves through knowledge.

It is a very difficult task to estimate the immediate roof and support behavior in a room-and-pillar mining section in the initial phase of the mining project. There is little information available at this phase, and it is restricted to geomechanic characterization of the rock layers from cores samples, and the in-situ instrumentation of experimental entries and intersections. Even being a pilot excavation for roof support test a good indicator for the behavior of the immediate roof, its behavior for a full excavation mining section is different from a single intersection of two entries, mainly because the stress redistribution caused by the multiple entries excavation and face advance for a full excavation section. The objective of this paper was to calibrate a 3-D numerical model of an experimental intersection, based on the in-situ instrumentation of an experimental intersection excavation, and the geomechanic description of the rock layers. The numerical model was built with the same specifications as the excavation test, including the entry geometry and roof support. The numerical model calibration was based on wire extensometers that were installed at different positions in the roof of the pilot excavation, and on the geomechanic characterization of the rock layers that form the roof, coal seam, and floor. Therefore, it is possible to estimate whether the roof support specification adopted in the test phase will be good enough for the development of the entire mining section.

High purity MgO is widely used in various fields as an important magnesiumcompound. The separation of Mg and Ca is of great importance for the preparation of high purity MgO from dolomite. In this study, the key effects of carbonization temperature and nano-calcium carbonate agglomeration on the separation mechanism of calcium and magnesium have been investigated. The results indicated that the reaction in the carbonization process was stepwise. Precise control of the carbonization temperature was essential for the formation of Mg(HCO3)2 due to its low reaction efficiency at lower temperatures or decomposition markedly at higher temperatures. Meanwhile, there was a common-ion effect in solutions containing Mg2+ and Ca2+. Nano-CaCO3 particles were formed during carbonization and agglomerated with the prolongation of static time. A product with a purity of 99.56% MgO and 0.16% CaO was obtained under the optimized conditions: ratio of liquid–solid 30 L/g, carbonization temperature 22–25 °C, carbonization time 1 h, and refining time 4 h. This work has important guiding significance for the preparation of high purity magnesium oxide from dolomite.

Centrifugal air classification and li-quid-phase sedimentation are the principal methods of industrially sizing materials of dimensions smaller than those handled by screens. Increasing application of materials such as composites and high performance ceramics has furthered the need for closely-sized, fine, industrial mineral and synthetic products of controlled properties. Sedimentation can be used to separate very small sized particles but introduces problems of liquid-solid separation, de-agglomeration and drying. Some of the advantages and limitations of centrifugal air classification will be discussed and laboratory and plant measurements using centrifugal machines will be presented to support the discussion.

Dredging and Flooding was completed on the Falconbridge Limited "New Tailings Area" in the period from 1996 through 1998, as part of their site closure measures. Part of the decision making process and closure planning was water quality prediction, including oxidation and diffusion modelling. The purpose of this modeling was to define the potential water quality that would result during and after dredging. A significant body of research on the geochemistry and oxidation kinetics of this site had been compiled. The results of the modeling provide practical insight on the potential water quality that may be expected. Water quality in the pond has steadily improved since flooding was completed with the exception of short term peaks during spring runoff. Aquatic vegetation is appearing through natural recovery and transplanting of local species, and colonies of minnows are now observed in the ponds.

After Abe Lee discovered gold (in April 1860) near the site of present-day Leadville, Colorado, he and is group staked nearly all of California Gulch with "speculative claims." They did so in an effort to grab any property that might be potentially profitable. But the plan did not work. New prospectors demanded a miners' meeting, from which arose the official "Bylaws of California Mining District, California Gulch, Arkansas River." These bylaws, adopted on May 12, 1860, established provisions as to the number, size and type of claims that could be filed. Fair laws invited more newcomers. By mid-summer, 5,000 people with tents and wagons were scattered from one end of the gulch to the other.Among the earliest arrivals to the region that spring were Horace Austin Warner Tabor and his wife, Augusta. H.A.W. Tabor, who was to become a pillar in the development of Leadville, arrived at California Gulch during a food shortage. He sacrificed his oxen so that hungry miners could eat. By doing so, he immediately became the friend of many. Augusta established a little store where she sold her baked goods and provided meals. Like most of the men, Horace prospected the surrounding hills. He only did so, however, for a short time. California Gulch yielded more than $5 million in gold during the next five years. By 1866, however, the placer gold was gone and most of the miners had packed up and left. Charles J. Mullen and Cooper Smith, who were grubstaked by a Philadelphian named J. Marshall Paul, found a new, rich lode at the Printer Boy Mine in 1868. It was the first underground gold mine in the Leadville area and marked the transition from surface mining to underground hard rock mining. Its discovery created a new but modest flurry of activity. Heavy black sand covered the region and made gold mining difficult. In 1875 William Stevens and Alvinus Wood decided to have the sand assayed. They discovered that it contained 15 ounces per ton of silver and was rich in carbonate. Stevens and Wood kept their find a secret for nearly two years. When the word spread in late 1877, the silver boom was on. In 1878 prospectors, merchants and others trickled into town from all directions. Dr. David H. Dougan closed his office. in Alma, crossed Mosquito Pass and set up shop in Leadville. Nobody seemed to need a doctor, however, and Dougan sat in his office for 28 days without a customer. On the 29th day he received word that there had been a mining accident and he was needed immediately. -That was the begin¬ning of his illustrious career in Leadville. Dougan was a successful physician, became mayor in 1881 and was later president of the Carbonate National Bank. Leadville was a simple community of log structures in 1878. By June of the following year, however, it had blossomed considerably. According to Cass Carpenter, as of May 1,1879, Leadville had "...19 hotels, 41 lodging houses, 82 drinking saloons, 38 restaurants, 13 wholesale liquor houses, 10 lumber yards, 7 smelting and reduction works, 2 sampling works for testing ores, 12 blacksmith shops, 6 livery stables, 6 jewelry stores, 3 undertakers and 21 gambling houses where all sorts of games are played as openly as the Sunday School sermon is conducted." Additionally, there were 36 brothels. When George E. King and other architects arrived, Leadville took on an air of elegance and sophistication. In sharp contrast to some of the Victorian-style, gingerbread-laced homes in Leadville, its suburbs were comprised of many tenement shacks and plain cabins mixed with a few commercial buildings, many mines and smelters. Mines sprinkled the area east of Leadville like pepper from a pepper shaker. Wherever there was a cluster of mines, a camp usually sprang up. Most were very close together. South of Leadville the giant Arkansas Valley lead smelter sprawled out between Stringtown and Bucktown in an area known as Smelter Valley. Founded in 1879 as the Billing and Eilers Smelter, the Arkansas Valley plant was operated by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Several other smelters operated in the vicin¬ity. In April 1878, Horace Tabor grubstaked prospectors August Rische and George Hook. For $64 worth of supplies and tools, he was guaranteed a one-third interest in their findings. Rische and Hook discovered the Little Pittsburg (often spelled Pittsburgh) Mine and made Tabor an instant millionaire. Tabor once purchased a "salted" mine, the Chrysolite; but instead of considering it a bad deal, he further developed the property and struck rich silver ore. Later, Tabor purchased the Matchless Mine for $117,000, possibly the only investment he made without partners. During its peak years, the Matchless yielded $1 million worth

This paper deals with the application of linear programming to the solution of mine ventilation network problems which involve only the controlled splitting of air. An airway whose air quantity is to be controlled to a prescribed value is called a "fixed-quantity" airway. In a network where the fixed-quantity airways are increased in number and are distributed such that the air quantities for the remaining airways are uniquely determined by Kirchhoff's first law, the problem reduces to determining the head losses and locations for air regulators and fans. This is one of the network problems encountered most often in underground coal mines. By formulating Kirchhoff's second law as a set of linear constraints and the total air horsepower supplied by fans as a linear objective function which is to be minimized, the problem is analyzed through the technique of linear programming. Some important properties of the problem are discussed and examples are presented.

The North East Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) project in Washington, D.C. requires design and construction of several SEM adits which have to be built between lateral shafts and the NEBT-TBM Tunnel. The paper describes ground improvements, the actual excavation, and also the final lining works. Schedule and sequencing restrictions provided some unique challenges which had to be considered when designing and constructing these mostly short, but essential portions of the project

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.
