A Setaram C-80 heat flux micro- calorimeter was used to study the surface and interfacial properties of fine coal particles in water containing flotation agents via heat of immersion measurements. Heat of immersion (?Himm) is usually a small exothermic quantity and can be used' to characterize a solid in terms of its relative hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity. The effects of coal type, surface oxidation, mineral matter content, kerosene concentration, and pH on the wetting characteristics were investigated. Results obtained from the calorimetry experiments correlated well with results from independent flotation experiments.

The Three Rivers Protection & Overflow Reduction Tunnel is part of the Long-Term Control Plan of the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana (USA). The 4.9 m internal diameter tunnel, of length approximately 7.5 km, is excavated at a depth of approximately 40–60 m through carbonate rocks using a slurry TBM. Due to the high hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass and the high in-situ ground water pressure (up to 6.5 bar), the management of the water inflow during the TBM advance and standstills, represents the major challenge for the project. This paper outlines the geotechnical conditions and the hazards related to the large water inflows expected in the pre-excavation phase and discusses the experience gained during the construction of the first 8,224 feet (2,507 m), (first third of the total length of the tunnel).

The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta contains bituminous sands interbedded with other sediments which form the reject encountered during mining operations. Grade prediction is based on a combination of geological interpretation, computer modelling and past mining experience. In addition to estimates for ore, an accurate estimate of "waste" or "reject," are required for Mine Planning. This study investigates the ability of point-kriging using geostatistics, to augment the existing data base of drill-holes in a study area on Syncrude's leases. This approach enables the assessment of potential "worst" case - "best" case scenarios within the context of Mine Planning.

Metallic droplets can remain attached to solid particles within liquid slags, resulting in production losses in several movement of solid particles in the liquid slag in a system, considering the attachment of liquid metal droplets to solid slag and on the resulting microstructures is investigated as a function of the velocity of the particles. For all wetting For the amount of metal attached to the particle, a clear trade-off was found between the speed of motion of the solid particle and the wetting regime.

Experimental studies of the axial distribution of particles along dry ball mills are described. The results, for mills ranging in diameter from about 10 cm to 1 meter and operated in both the batch and continuous modes, indicate a consistent pattern of significant migration of particles away from the ends of the mill. In some, but less frequent, cases axial migration of the grinding media is also observed. Analysis of the data suggests that particle migration results from end-effects which extend for a distance of about one mill diameter along its length. End-wall roughness appears to play a significant role in the particle migration phenomenon. Media migration is generally associated with continuous mills operating at relatively high powder flow rates.

This paper describes a commercial installation of a sophisticated instrumentation and control system designed to maximize the performance of heavy medium cyclones. Samples of plant feed and its products were collected and analyzed for ash content so that measures of efficiency could be determined for plant operation under (1) manual control and (2) automatic (computer) control. The heavy medium cyclone control strategy and its digital computer implementation are discussed in detail. The sample results are analyzed and the economic benefits of automatic control are discussed. Results from the initial data sets quantify the economic benefits of automatic closed-loop control; viz, increased recovery and reduced clean coal variability have been clearly demonstrated.

Overshot loaders are loading machines which fill a front-mounted bucket by crowding and bucket lifting, passing the loaded bucket over the machine and throw¬ing the load into a haulage unit to the rear. The load is retained in the bucket as the load mass is accelerated in its path over the machine. At the point of discharge, the bucket is stopped suddenly and the load leaves the bucket, following the throw trajectory past the rear of the loader. Fig. 1 shows a typical overshot loader of this type. Overshot loaders were developed for loading in nar¬row drift headings and drawpoints, where it is impossible to place or pass a haulage unit alongside the loader. Haulage access is to the rear of all overshot loaders. The first overshot loader was developed in the early 1930s. The early machines were rail-mounted, air¬powered, and had small loading capacities. To this day, the same basic design configuration exists, and all suc¬cessful overshot loaders still use compressed air. Bucket sizes range from 0.14 to 0.59 m3 (5 to 21 cu ft). The most commonly used machines are rail-mounted, al¬though crawler versions are popular for special applica¬tions, particularly shaft sinking. Rubber-tired machines have found some application where a greater travel distance is required between the loading and discharge points. CONDITIONS INFLUENCING APPLICATION Roadway Type Rail-mounted loaders are used where soft bottom requires rail support or where the long haul is ac¬complished with rail. This situation usually occurs in civil tunnels or in mine drifts that will continue to utilize rail-bound main haulage after development work is completed. Crawler and rubber-tire mounted loaders are used where the roadway surface is rough and lateral travel beyond the range of rail-bound machines is required. Work Area Dimensions The largest rail-bound loaders can clean roadways as wide as 4 m (13 ft) from a single track. Wider headings require multiple trackage. Headroom require¬ments are dependent upon the path described by the bucket as it passes over the machine. The largest over¬shot loader requires approximately 3.4 m (11 ft) of headroom. It follows that the largest heading that can be driven by overshot loaders from a single set of rails is approximately 4 m (13 ft) wide and a minimum of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) high above the rail. The smallest rail-bound loaders can work efficiently in headings as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) wide by 1.8 m (6 ft) high above the rail.

The mechanistic approach to comminution consisting of incorporating particulate breakage functions into a suitable population balance equation has been developed by a number of researchers over the past decade or so. (1) To date this approach has been developed and demonstrated primarily for batch-operated, laboratory or small-scale ball mills. However, since industrial mills are mostly quite large and operated in the continuous mode; suitable population balance models and methods for obtaining the necessary breakage and other model parameters must be developed. This paper describes and investigates a radioisotope tracer technique for this purpose, Population balance models previously developed(2,3) are adapted for this study.

In a shearer longwall mining operation, the longwall bits are responsible for breaking into and chip-ping the broken coal blocks away from the coal face. However, underground observations have found that a large number of longwall bits are always working under various degrees of wear. Reduction of the bit wear could be realized by using better designed longwall bits and properly selected shearer operating parameters. A computer program has been developed to simulate the performance of the longwall bits. The shape of the bit head, the installation of the bits on the drum and the operation parameters are the information required by the program. Through the simulations, the main factors affecting the bit wearing process are identified. Suggestions are also made for improving the design of the longwall bits.

With most of the coal currently mined in the eastern U.S. already requiring cleaning to meet electric utility coal specifications, the question remains how medium- and high-sulfur coal producers will provide the even better quality coal expected to be demanded if pending acid rain legislation is enacted. One emerging approach is to crush the coal to liberate additional ash and sulfur so that better quality coal can be produced at equal yields. This paper discusses how to measure liberation. the premiums the utility market is willing to pay for lower sulfur coal, and a staged middlings crushing scheme that promises the benefits of total raw coal crushing but at lower costs. For some coals, cautious application of liberation concepts may be the only way to produce a product that can be quality and cost competitive in the future utility coal market.

Flotation circuits in the metalliferous industry recover high value concentrates from very fine (minus 0.lmm), low grade, slow-floating feeds. Flotation columns acting as final cleaners within these circuits offer the benefits of higher grade concentrates, reduced circuit complexity, improved control and reduced power consumption. By contrast, in the coal industry, these benefits have not been realised, principally because columns are not well suited to the treatment of conventional coal flotation feeds (minus 0.5m). However, this does not imply that columns do not have a place within the coal industry, rather that they must be applied in a role where all the unique advantages of column flotation can be of benefit. The development of a commercial scale column to recover discarded ultrafines from the Riverside preparation plant of BHP-Utah Coal Limited is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the column design features pertinent to the recovery of ultrafine coal. Pilot and commercial scale column performances are compared. The results of the commercial scale testwork indicate that a full installation at the 5.5 MTPA Riverside plant would annually recover additional coal worth $US 6.6M.

Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55% are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper’s goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with SiO2between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with SiO2 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 0.95 during production.

In this paper, we present design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. This robotic excavator must be equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered from bucket mounted force sensors during the excavation process. Implementation details and experimental results using the fuzzy behavior based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining excavator controller.

The Tennohji-Benten Giant Trunk Sewer Project has been under construction since 1974 in the eastern part of Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. The entire project is divided into 7 blocks, some of which have already been completed. This 8.8-km sewer tunnel, being driven through a densely populated area, was planned to be constructed by the shield tunneling method. This paper described shield tunneling performances and ground behaviors during the construction of Blocks 2 and 3. An earth pressure shield (dia., 6,750 mm) was employed in Block 3 tunneling. The ground was generally soft and the cover over the tunnel varied from 13 m to only 4.5 m, so that a considerable amount of chemicals was injected to stabilize the ground. A hand-digging type shield (dia., 7,250 mm) was used in Block 2 tunneling under compressed air. For 85 m of the total length of 1.6 km, the soil at the face was extremely soft, and therefore, the ground freezing method was additionally employed.

Draglines are dominant machines and the most electricity consumers in surface coal mines. With the growing price of energy, environmental concerns, and the high sensitivity of mine profitability to dragline productivity, any improvement in efficiency of draglines can be beneficial for mines. Research has shown that operator skills have a significant impact on energy efficiency of loading machines. This study suggests a method to identify the key parameters that lead to differences in operator energy efficiency (responsible parameters). First, correlation analysis is used to identify parameters that are correlated to energy efficiency. Second, linear regression of a difference matrix is used to determine responsible parameters. Since this method is based on pair-wise comparison of operators, equal number of cycle is required for pairs of operators. Complete case analysis (CCA) is used to handle missing data problems. The final conclusion is made after removing the effect of random sampling and by considering all pairs of operators. Identifying responsible parameters can improve operator training programs. The suggested method is illustrated with a case study using field data.

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.

To adequately attack the longwall dust problem, the US Bureau of Mines funded a contract to define dust sources on a longwall mine face area. The study examined the shearer during sumping, cutting, and tramming, the conveyor, and the roof supports. Tests showed the shearer to be the major dust source. Introduction Long-term illnesses place a heavy burden on miners, the mining industry, and taxpayers. Black lung payments to more than 400,000 miners and their survivors exceeded $9 billion between 1970 and 1980. They are continuing at a rate of $1 billion per year. Recent MSHA data indicate more than 50% of the longwall faces are still out of compliance with the 2 mg/m3 (0.00007 oz per cu ft) respirable dust regulation. Allowable dust limits are often further reduced owing to the presence of silica dust. This substantially increases the problem's severity. Research in the 1970s showed that by modifying the mining method through changing drum-type mining machines from high rpm shallow cutting to slow rpm deep cutting, both specific dust and energy could be reduced (Black et al., 1978; Ludlow and Wilson, 1982; Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). The coal mining industry is using more longwall equipment to economically obtain high productivity. This high production rate, however, makes it difficult for longwalls to meet the legal dust standard. Research is showing how both these concerns may be addressed at the mining face. Results reported here explain the relationship of various major elements of the longwall system to dust generation on the longwall face. This paper is based on work completed by Foster-Miller Associates Inc. Objectives were to differentiate dust sources on the longwall face and to quantify dust levels for various elements of the shearer drum. The work was accomplished in two phases. Jonathon Ludlow, project engineer for FMA, developed and performed the necessary testing (Ludlow and Marshall, 1983). Bradley, Hadden, and Weston (1983) have done evaluations on British coal mines that produced similar results to those reported here. They found causative rela¬tionships between haulage speed, production, depth cut, drum speed, and dust generation. They also found that roof support movement increased the dustiness, whereas this work indicated that support movement had only a minor effect on total dust exposure. Both of these results are valid when the variation of mining conditions is analyzed. British mines are deeper than US mines. Therefore, roof rocks and coal are more fragmented than in the shallower US mines. Other reasons for the dust differences include the weaker shales found in Britain and the variation of roof support equipment designs between the UK and the US. Four mines in this report had rock roofs and, thus, would be less dusty. The fifth longwall mine had a coal roof, but the large cross-sectional area and high air velocity minimized dust exposure. Mines and Equipment Five underground longwall mine sites were tested (Fig. 1). All were using double-ended ranging-drum shearers (derds) with some variations in equipment. The mines and equipment details are shown in Table 1. No modification of mining equipment or operating cycles was made during the first phase of testing. The mining process observed followed the normal mine operating procedures. Three GCA RAM-1 respirable dust monitors and two vortex anemometers with cycle notations on portable tape recorders were used in each face area. The start and end of each cycle segment were recorded. Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and utilization of a computerized ore control system at Cyprus Coppers tone Gold Mine near Parker, Arizona. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance, and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blast hole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation, and ore zone stakeout, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blast hole information being processed, analyzed, and reported daily.

The introduction of continuous papermaking in the early 1800's was the beginning of the industry as we know it today. Since that time, the majority of the paper produced has employed an acid process. However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.
