INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. At long last, mining is on the rebound in Minnesota?s Iron Range and the excitement is starting to show. The SME Minnesota Section?s annual meeting was once again held in the heart of Iron Range country, at the Duluth Entertainment and Conference Center on the Duluth waterfront. The conference boasted a record attendance of 475 people and its largest-ever trade show. Appearances by Governor Mark Dayton?s new Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) appointee, Tony Sertich, as well as a local Fox news crew (see clip on SME website [link: http://fox21online.com/news/duluth-mining-conference-breeds-optimism-tech-innovation]) made clear that a lot of eyes [ ] are on the industry as it dusts itself off from the 2008-2009 recession. While the early years of the 21st century were very good to the Iron Range, the global drop in commodities prices and production left many companies reeling and brought back bad memories of the collapse of the industry in the 1980s. However, two years of solid growth and a rebound to above pre-2008 production levels have let the Minnesota mining industry to relax a little and talk seriously about long-term growth and stability.

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."

This paper presents an algorithm for optimizing the scheduling of trackless equipment in underground mines. With the shortest working interval and maximum productivity as goals, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to solve the problem, and obtain the optimal working sequence with the most suitable equipment configuration possible. The input for the proposed method is the number of units and capacity of trackless equipment, the production process, ore amount in stopes, and the distance between stopes. The algorithmis verified using four setups of 5 stopes with 5 cycles, 5 stopes with 15 cycles, 10 stopes with 10 cycles, and 10 stopes with 30 cycles. The solution time of the algorithmis no more than 20 min, which is acceptable for practical applications. The results show that the setup of 10 stopes with 30 cycles is closer to the actual production of the mines, and the optimization model can effectively improve the operation efficiency. In this scenario, the robustness of the optimization is tested by simulating equipment failure events. Under the condition of 8% failure rate, the operation time is extended over 3.21–14.56% than expected, which represents strong robustness. The algorithm can quickly provide a feasible and effective solution for the production scheduling decision of trackless equipment in underground mines.

Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

A unique type of grinding mill liner has been developed by Waagner-Biro A.G. of Austria. This liner system, termed an angular spiral lining (.ESL), was, successfully tested by Magma Copper Company's San Manuel concentrator in both their 10 Ft x 10 Ft (3.05m x 3.05m) and 12 Ft, 6 In x 14 Ft (3.81m x 4.27m) grate discharge wet grinding ball mills. Magma Copper's savings in power and grinding balls justified conversion of more than half of their twenty-six ball mills to the ESL system.1,2 The ASL system was provided by the Capitol Castings Division of Midland Ross Corporation, the exclusive licensee for such conversions. Capitol Castings proposed the following as expected benefits from installation of an ASL system in an 18 Ft x 21 Ft (5.49m x 6.40m) overflow discharge wet grinding ball mill at the Pinto Valley Operation of Cities Service Company: "(a) Reduction of power consumption per ton of ore milled = 12%, (b) Increased throughput = 6%, (c) Reduction of ball consumption = 6%."

Zinc ferrite is the major phase component present in zinc refinery residue (ZRR) and electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). Up to 71 percent zinc ferrite has been reported to be present in ZRR, and in most studies zinc ferrite has been deemed the major phase in EAFD. In 2010, the global annual production of EAFD was 3.7 Mt, with 15.20 kg of EAFD generated per ton of recycled steel [1]. The generations of ZRR and EAFD have been growing over time, requiring a greener approach for the reutilization and extraction of valuable elements. ZRR can be a potential source of zinc, as its zinc content is as high as 30 percent [2,3]. The presence of zinc ferrite makes the extraction of zinc difficult because zinc ferrite is refractory to leaching, and direct leaching is inefficient. The Waelz process is currently employed to extract zinc from EAFD and other metallurgical wastes. The Waelz process operates in the temperature range of 1,100 to 1,500 °C and uses coke as reductant. This study explores a carbon-free and relatively low-temperature process for the selective extraction of zinc from pure zinc ferrite.

In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine's production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

The effects of pressure and cake thickness were studied using a split-plot design for pressure filtration of a fine refuse slurry obtained from a bituminous coal preparation facility. Pressure filtration offers the potential to significantly reduce the moisture content of the fine refuse stream with the addition of little to no flocculants, thereby minimizing the volume of refuse stored in impoundments and providing a recycle water stream for use within the plant. Experimental results showed that the final cake moisture decreased with increase in pressure and decrease in cake thickness. In addition, specific cake resistances calculated for the various tests indicated an increasing trend with increasing pressure and decreasing cake thickness. With increase in cake thickness, an increase in cake moisture and the weight of solids deposited in the cake was observed. An ANOVA analysis indicated that both cake thickness and pressure significantly affected the cake moisture, while only cake thickness statistically influenced the weight of solids in the cake. A regression model was developed with an R2 value of about 0.99 to relate cake thickness, the single largest statistically significant factor, with the weight of solids in the cake. Filter capacities were calculated in terms of the solids deposited per unit time based on a product specification of 25 percent cake moisture, and it was observed that the thinnest cake had the highest filter capacity.

Canadian sylvinites contain over 90% of KCl and NaCl and a few percent of water-insoluble minerals. Cationic flotation is used to produce KCl concentrates. Since water-insoluble minerals appear in the pulp as slimes, and since long-chain primary amines are utilized as a collector, desliming is essential. The potash industry utilizes different desliming methods. This may involve selective flocculation of the slimes with polyacrylamide and removal of the flocculated product by flotation, or mechanical desliming with the use of classifying cyclones. Whichever method is applied, desliming is never complete; the flotation feed after desliming still contains about one percent of the slimes which heavily affect collector consumption and flotation selectivity. Therefore, the remaining slimes have to be rendered inactive by “blinding” them with polymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose or guar gum. The commercial blinders used by the potash industry include natural and synthetic polysaccharides. The most common is the use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG). These are quite different polymers, while CMC is anionic, GG is non-ionic; while the applied CMCs are of relatively low molecular weight (about 300,000) GGs have much higher molecular weight. Guar gums are also heavily used as the depressants of naturally floatable gangue in the processing of platinum-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. (1999) quite a large variety of modified guar gums are available in South Africa for this application. Cheng et al. (2002) claim that natural guar gum’s molecular weight is 1.935 • 106. Robinson et al. (1982) found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105. The highest molecular weight sample is then very close to the natural guar gum studied by Cheng et al. (2002). According to the manufacturer, the Rantec KP4000 guar gum which is used by the Canadian potash industry has a molecular weight of about 1.5 x 106. Since both KCl and NaCl are soluble in water, the flotation process is carried out in saturated brine. At 20 oC, 1450 kg of NaCl-KCl-H2O saturated solution contains about 0.300 kg of NaCl, 0.150 kg of KCl, and 1 kg of water (Gaska et al., 1965). Thus, in the saturated NaCl-KCl brine there are about 5.1 kmole of NaCl and 2 kmole KCl per 55.5 kmole of water. This gives 3.9 molecules of water per each ion assuming complete dissociation of NaCl and KCl. Thus, it is obvious that all water molecules in the saturated brine must be bound in the hydration shells around the hydrated ions. The surface tension of the NaCl-KCl saturated brine was recently measured to be 85 mN/m (Laskowski et al., 2003).

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is currently one of the deepest block cave mines in the world. The rock mass is heavily veined with little to no joints and faults are usually healed cohesive structures leading to difficult cave mining conditions. The caving process is improved if the rock mass contains fractures with sufficient density that it will cave by gravity as undercutting progresses. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has been used to create fractures around the cave to improve mining. A seismic monitoring system has been used in DMLZ since the start of mining. Therefore, the seismic activities before, during and after HF can be monitored. Shear wave splitting is a process used to study the impacts of HF on the rock mass. This process involves the measurement of travel times from splitting shear waves after seismic events and using this to define the anisotropy within the rock mass and subsequently fracture density. This paper sets out the methodology for carrying out the interpretation of the shear wave splitting process using seismic data from the fracked cave crown and abutments along with an overview of the benefits to cave mining as result.

The newest addition to the Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes copper producing complex is a by-product uranium extraction plant which was placed into service in February 1980. The plant is unusual in that it is placed internal to the copper countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction, and electrowinning plant. The plant reached full production within a month and, to date, has produced continually above design rates.

"A fundamental understanding of flame propagation characteristics through and around obstacles is needed to accurately model methane driven longwall coal mine explosions originating or propagating in the gob. Experimental investigations of methane flames in horizontal cylindrical reactors with simulated gob (i.e. rock piles) were carried out alongside coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion simulations. Stoichiometric methane-air mixtures were ignited in semi-open reactor vessels of 5cm, 9.5cm and 71cm diameter, all with a fixed length to diameter (L/D) ratio of 8.6. This was done both with empty reactors and also with a rock pile placed at the open end of the reactor. The rock pile length to reactor length ratio was fixed at 0.3, and the rock pile height to reactor diameter ratio was fixed at 0.33 for all reactors. The smaller two reactor experiments were modeled with ANSYS Fluent in 2D. Experimental results indicate that for this geometry a similar acceleration mode occurs across scales: that the flame speeds up an average of 40% as it passes over a rock pile with this profile. The model is able to capture several important features of the experimental results, including the significant increase in velocity, the speedup ahead of the rock pile, and the leveling off of the empty tube flame front propagation velocity. INTRODUCTION Explosions in underground coal mines are among the largest industrial explosions, known to result in the rapid combustion of 20m3 of fuel gas or more [1,2] Coal beds hold methane gas under pressure, and when the pressure is relieved through mining activity some of this methane is released. The methane then mixes with ventilation air and, if not sufficiently diluted, may form a combustible mixture, which may result in an explosion. Several large coal mine explosions have occurred around the world recently. These include the 2014 Soma Mine disaster in Turkey that killed 301 people [3], and the 2009 Heilongjiang Mine explosion in China that killed 108 [4]. Other recent mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine that caused 29 fatalities [5], have demonstrated that explosive gases can accumulate and ignite within and around the gob area of a longwall coal mine and then expand into the active mining face and nearby areas, endangering workers and equipment. If enough combustible gas is involved, the initial flame can accelerate, eventually transitioning from deflagration to detonation [6]. Researchers are developing a fundamental understanding of the evolution of the explosion process from the laminar kernel to the fully turbulent regime, and its propagation through obstacles such as those found in the gob. Researchers also studied the initial development of methane flames and the potential for the development of a detonation."

Disposal of mine tailings in "waters of the United States" is presently prohibited even though case studies indicate that the practice may be environmentally viable. To simulate disposal in the natural environment, nine containers of tailings and sediment were instrumented and placed on the ocean floor near Juneau, AK as were ninety-six biosample containers. Pore water concentrations of five metals were determined, and biota populations were characterized for both materials. After 500 days of exposure there were no statistical macro scale differences between tailings and sediment biota populations or Cu, Pb, and Zn pore water concentrations. Tailings released slightly more Fe than sediment, but sediment released significantly more Mn than tailings. Disposal of mine tailings in marine waters may be environmentally safe.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty, clay-rich carbonate residuum. Covering much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the early 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri-1/2/3 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural' geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1 000 parts per million (ppm) or more of Pb, Zn and Ba. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in figure 1 indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units--Bonneterre Dolomite, Potosi and Eminence Dolomites, Roubidoux Formation, and the Jefferson City, Powell and Cotter Dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade Dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. A blast furnace test of approximately 5,000 tons of PelleTech Corporation (PTC) cold bond pellets was successfully run at Kaiser Steel Corporation (Kaiser) Steel Manufacturing Division at Fontana, California. The pellets were produced from mill scale, BOF dust and blast furnace flue dust. A 15 day base period, during which time the metallic burden was 2/3 heat indurated pellets and 1/3 sinter, preceeded the test. During the test period the metallic bur- den was 10% cold bond pellets, 56.7% heat indurated pellets and 33.3% sinter. A 15 day post test base period followed during which the PTC pellets were replaced by conventional pellets. The pellets were produced in the 3.C Semi-works Facility located on Kaiser property. The facility incorporates the Michigan Technological University Hydro-Thermal Agglomerating Process.

The present work discusses the nuances of scaling and flow similarity to develop a 1/40th scale version of a longwall coal mine. Details on the geometric, kinematic, and dynamic scaling of the physical model are presented and discussed. This works also discusses using a 30% CO2 – 70% He gas mixture as a surrogate for methane. It also presents the implications of various Reynolds numbers (ranging from 7,000 to 140,000) and rotation of the shearer drums in the dynamic representation of the airflow and gas mixtures in the physical scaled model.

Michiquillay is a major copper deposit situated about 70 km (44 miles) northeast of Cajamarca in northern Peru (Fig. 1). It occurs largely in quartz monzonite in a shatter zone produced by the intersection of northwest- and northeast-trending fault systems. The geology is described by Hollister and Sirvas (1974). The ore deposit was drilled in 1963-1964 by Asarco, with results indicating a resource of 575 Mt (634 million st) averaging 0.72% Cu-0.03% Mo. A decision to bring the project to production has been deferred because world capacity to produce copper has been more than adequate to serve world requirements since 1964. The chain of events leading to the discovery of Michiquillay was set in motion by a decision by the management responsible for the Chilete mine to undertake an investigation of the surrounding area for a possible supplementary source of mill feed to bolster its decreasing lead-zinc reserves. Chilete, located 100 km (62 miles) inland from Pacasmayo, is the most northerly, important mining project in Peru, and little was known of the mineral potential north and east of that point. Relatively unimpressive reports of Colonial silver mining had attracted little investigation, and little was known of the regional geology. One study by Benavides (1956) had been made of the Cretaceous in the region of Cajamarca.

Fractal theory was horn in the mid-1970s. Since then, its application has been spreading day by day, from mathematics and geology to areas such as geophysics, physics and material sciences. In this paper, fractal models are developed to characterize particle size distribution and surface area. Theoretical formulas are derived for the computation of fractal dimensions D (size) and D[s] (surface area). The models developed are applied using experimental data of particle size distribution and surface area obtained from the Microtrac Particle Size Analyzer for dust processed by several size reduction devices. The theoretical models and the experimental data are found in good agreement. The fractal dimensions obtained are D = 1.350 to 1.770 and D[s] = 2.058 to 2.584 for fine coal dust particles (< 15 µm) produced by various size reduction mechanisms. The physical meaning of these fractal dimensions is also related to the dust generation processes.
