The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

Uranium and its decay series are associated with phosphate deposits of marine origin. Uranium concentrations are on the order of 100 to 200 ppm in matrix from the Bone Valley formation of Central Florida and about 25% this value in matrix mined from the Hawthorne formation in North Florida. Occupational radiation exposure due to this source has been under study in Florida since the mid 1970's (Windham, Partridge, Horton 1976; Roessler and Prince 1978). This report is based on findings of an industry-wide scoping survey conducted by the University of Florida during March 1976 through May 1977 and subsequent studies in selected individual facilities. PHOSPHATE MINING OPERATIONS Mining and beneficiation operations are diagramed in Figure 1. At the excavation site, electric powered draglines remove the overburden and expose the phosphate matrix (ore) which is then slurried and pumped to the beneficiation site. At the washer stage of the beneficiation plant, the matrix is subjected to washing and screening. A coarse product, "pebble" is produced and sent to storage piles while the fine fraction is passed through a series of cyclones to remove the clays. The generated clay suspension is sent to settling ponds while the remaining sand-sized fraction is sent to the flotation plant. At the flotation plant, phosphate particles are recovered from the fine sand particles of similar size through several stages of treatment with reagents, agitation and separation of floating and sinking fractions. The high grade concentrate produced is transferred to storage while the sand tailings are discarded. [ ]

Introduction The Gold Quarry gold deposit is the largest bulk tonnage epithermal gold deposit in northeastern Nevada to be developed by Newmont Gold Co., formerly known as Carlin Gold Mining Co. Exploration and development of the deposit extended over a period of nearly 50 years before bulk tonnage mining became economically feasible. Proven reserves at Gold Quarry are currently estimated at more than 255 t (8.2 million oz.) of gold, accounting for more than 40% of the total Carlin Trend mineable reserves for 1986. Milling began in late 1985; dump leaching of lower grade ores began in May of 1986. The mill has exceeded the initial design throughput rate of 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) and is now processing more than 8 kt/d (9000 stpd). The dump leach facility will process more than 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lower grade ores in 1986. The Gold Quarry ore body is to be developed by an open pit that will eventually be 1830 m (6000 ft) long, 1220 m (4000 ft) wide and 300 m (1000 ft) deep. The mine currently produces 77 kt/d (85,000 stpd) on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day workweek. Planned pit production will increase to nearly 168 kt/d (185,000 stpd) in 1988. Production equipment currently includes one Demag H-/285, three Komatsu PC-1500 hydraulic shovels, two Cat 992C loaders and 21 90 to 135 t (100 to 150 st) haul trucks. The Serrana Process was developed in the 60's to concentrate an igneous low grade phosphate/carbonate ore using tall oil as a collector and corn starch as a modifier in alkaline medium. Nowadays, although tall oil has already been substituted by a new amphoteric synthetic collector, starch hasn't been substituted yet. This study is an attempt towards understanding the role played by corn starch in this specific system. By means of bench scale flotation test, it was observed that corn starch was capable of promoting the flotation of apatite, phlogopite and dolomite. No effect over calcite was observed. The best efficiency of separation apatite/gangue minerals was yielded at the concentration ranges of 17 to 20 mg/l of starch and 13 to 17 mg/l of tall oil. The starch concentration showed a strong influence over the characteristics of the froth produced by the flotation tests, mainly over the volume of the froth and its mineralization.

Two 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in.) diameter raises, concrete-lined to 5.49 m (18 ft) inside diameter, were completed in 1978 at the Monterey Coal Company Number One Mine near Carlinville, Illinois, by Frontier-Kemper Constructors. These two raises are the largest in cross-section yet completed by full-face upreaming, and the success of this project is expected to increase the application of raise-boring to coal mine shaft construction. WHY 6.17 M (20 FT) DIAMETER ? Raise boring is well accepted in the metal mining industry for a variety of applications, and is gaining in acceptance in the civil works construction industry. The use of raise boring to construct vertical openings for coal mines has not been as widely accepted, even though coal mining requires, per mine, the greatest number of openings to the surface of any underground activity. Several factors have influenced the low utilization of raise boring in coal mining: 1. Coal mine shafts must often be of large diameter to pass the required high volumes of ventilation air at acceptably low water gage pressures. Cross-sectional areas of finished shafts exceeding 23.23 sq m (250 sq ft) are common. 2. The life of ventilation shafts is comparatively long, and the typical sedimentary strata overlying coal seams normally require that the shafts be lined. Shafts on the intake ventilation circuit must have permanent water-tight linings. 3. Unconsolidated overburden at the surface is often thick, and as reaming cannot be safely utilized in unconsolidated material,

Electric locomotives powered by extensive electrical cabling systems were prevalent in the mining industry in the early days of the 20th Century [1]. Since the movement of tethered electrical mining locomotives was limited, the advent of diesel-powered mobile mining equipment provided more flexibility. This led the mining industry to be dominated by diesel-powered locomotives for most of the 20th Century and the entire 21st Century, to date. However, diesel power has certain drawbacks. Diesel-powered vehicles produce tailpipe emissions such as diesel particulate matter, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. Mine workers exposed to these emissions were, and continue to be, subject to health issues such as respiratory problems, increased risk of lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease. [2][3]. Extensive ventilation systems are required to dilute the diesel exhaust and dissipate the heat generated by these vehicles. Moreover, as mines are getting deeper due to depleting resources, ventilation costs in diesel-powered mines are becoming increasingly high. These factors, coupled with the trend towards greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in mine operations, has allowed zero-emission electric locomotive systems to gain traction. As lithium-ion battery technology is becoming more advanced, battery-powered electric vehicles can now perform duty cycles comparable to those of diesel-powered vehicles. Although battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are comparable to diesel-powered vehicles in terms of mobility, they have certain limitations. For instance, the amount of onboard energy is limited by the battery energy density and specific energy. The MT42 diesel haul truck from Epiroc, for example, has a fuel tank capacity of 580L, which is equivalent to around 1450 kWh of net electrical energy [4]. The electrified version of the MT42, on the other hand, has an onboard battery with 375 kWh of usable energy weighing around 4.9 metric tonnes [5]. Moreover, storing and refueling of diesel-powered vehicles is simple and quick, whereas battery energy storage and charging systems require extensive infrastructure development. Charging time is mostly limited by battery chemistry and design. Due to these limitations, the benefits of battery-powered mining vehicles are more likely to be realized with proper planning and optimization of the BEV fleet. This includes optimizing mining layouts for BEV use, charging infrastructure design, and management of onboard energy storage systems.

"With the depletion of easily minable coal seams, less favorable reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand. Due to several historical reasons, a large amount of remnant coal was left unrecovered. One such case history occurs with the remnant rectangular stripe coal pillars using partial extraction method at Guandi Coal Mine, Shanxi Province, China. The challenge that the coal mine is facing is that there is an ultra-close coal seam right under it, with an only 0.8 to 1.5 m sandstone dirt band in between the two. The simulation study was carried out to investigate the simultaneous recovery of upper remnant coal pillars while mining the ultra-close lower panel using longwall top coal caving (LTCC). The remnant coal pillar was induced to cave in as top coal in LTCC system. Physical modelling shows that the coal pillars are the abutments of the stress arch structure formed within the overburden strata. The stability of overhanging roof strata highly depends on the stability of the remnant coal pillars. The gob development (roof strata cave-in) is intermittent with the cave-in of these coal pillars and the sandstone dirt band. FLAC3D numerical modelling shows that the multiple seam interaction has a significant influence on mining-induced stress environment for mining of lower panel. The pattern of the stress evolution on the coal pillars with the advance of the lower working face was found. This demonstrates that the stress relief of a remnant coal pillar enhances the caveability of the pillars and sandstone dirt band below them.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the world’s coal-rich countries. Coal has played a significant role in the growth of China’s economy. Coal reserves have been mined commercially in China for over one hundred years. The demand for coal in China is still going to grow at a relatively high rate (BP Energy Outlook, 2019). Long-term large-scale and intensive coal mining activities have created tension between increased demand and limited resources (Bai et al., 2018). Easily minable coal seams such as sub-horizontal, tabular, and laterally extensive coal seams are being depleted, and therefore the remaining reserves are becoming less favorable. However, in many situations, the coal reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand for energy.Due to sedimentary environments and geological conditions, many coal seams are interspersed with sedimentary bands, or partings both within an individual seam and between seams. These bands and partings lead to appearance of ultra-close coal seams, as well as giving rise to considerable variation in their structural and mechanical properties (Ghabraie and Ren, 2016). Difficulties are encountered in the mining of such coal seams. If ultra-close coal seams are mined sequentially, that requires the design of a mining system for each individual coal seam; also, a large number of gateroads have to be excavated, which is not a high-efficiency option. If ultra-close coal seams are mined at a great mining height at once, for instance, using longwall top coal caving—a longwall mining method that is widely used in China for the mining of ultra-thick coal seams—then the location and characteristics of the band would have a significant influence on success of their extraction."

The New Lead Belt of Missouri, situated in the heart of the Clark National Forest, stands as a dynamic example of how mining activities can successfully coexist in a restricted wilderness area. After 16 years of intensive drilling activity, mine development and surface plant construction, many would agree that the mine-plant design philosophy of St. Joe has minimized the imbalancing effects to the ecology and the wilderness appearance of the Ozark area. In a recent dedication speech of St. Joe's newest operation, it was stated: 1 "this Brushy Creek Mine, as well as nearly all of the mines in this district, lies within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest. Here the Forest Service has an outstanding and realistic program for multi-use of Federal lands. Mining, lumbering, recreation and conservation coexist in, what I consider, a delightful wilderness environment. I believe that this same type of usage could be permitted on all government land without seriously detracting from its natural beauty." Each and every activity in the process of discovery, exploration, development and finally operating a mine and process mill could have drastically degraded some phase of nature's environment were it not for the well developed and executed plans of the mining people involved. This is not to say that everything has been kept in perfect balance; but most certainly the industrial impact on what was once a wilderness area has been held to a minimum. What follows is the story of how each phase of this gigantic development was handed by industry people. Through their interaction and cooperation with government agencies, educators and researchers, allowed not only the ecology of the area to be protected, but the aesthetic beauty of the Ozarks to remain intact.

Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

Introduction Modern longwall mining, introduced to the US coal industry in the mid-1960s, is the latest coal mining technique. Today, longwall mining produces more than 15% of all underground coal production. The growth of longwall mining in the US is slow. However, nearly two decades of longwall mining have demonstrated that its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Longwall Advantages Production and Economics - A typical longwall production ranges mostly from 0.9 to 1.8 kt (1000 to 2000 st) of clean coal per shift. This is about three to six times the production of comparable continuous mining units. Furthermore, there are much less rejects in longwall mining, typically 15% to 25%. It must be noted, however, that a new longwall with an inexperienced crew may produce less, depending on mining conditions. But as experience gains, production increases rapidly. Due to its high production, the cost per ton of coal mined over the mine's lifetime is cheaper with longwall mining than with continuous mining. A study on a conceptual mine of 25 year life using actual operational data (Dangerfield, 1981) concluded that the cost per ton of coal mined is 32% cheaper by longwall than by continuous mining. Another benefit from its high production potential is that it enables the production to be concentrated in a few longwall faces versus many units of continuous mining required to achieve a similar production. As a result, mine organization and management simplify considerably. Safety and Savings - Most US longwalls use shield supports that cover the roof with solid canopy and isolate a gob completely from the face area. Thus, if the supports are properly selected and operated, the potential for roof fall accident is almost zero. Furthermore, it is not unusual that a well-run longwall face is much more orderly and cleaner that most well-run machine shops. The ventilation system for longwall mining is the most ideal type. It is simple and unique. No auxiliary fans are required. The fresh air sweeps through the whole face. Its volume and velocity can be adjusted as demanded. Recovery - In spite of multiple entries layout for US longwall panels, the longwall method recovers up to 40% more coal than the continuous mining method (Dangerfield, 1981). The typical recovery for longwall mining is 70% to 85% versus 45% to 80% for continuous mining. Versatility - Longwall mining has been employed successfully in seam heights ranging from 0.8 to 3.7 m (2.7 to 12 ft); in seam inclinations from horizontal to 35°; in overburden depths from 46 to 914 m (150 to 3000 ft); in single or multiple seam mining; and in uniform or irregular seam characteristics. For seam height less than 1.2 m (4 ft), the plow is used instead of a shearer. However, in spite of recent developments, the plow still is unsuitable for hard coal seams. Slow Acceptance How come longwall mining, with so many advantages, has not spread more rapidly? Undoubtedly, the major reason is the large capital investment required. Under normal market conditions, the capital required for a longwall panel ranges from $7 to $11 million. Another factor is the uncertainty of its applicability to any specific coal seam of interest where longwall has not been used or operated successfully. Although longwall mining elsewhere has proven its applicability to wide-ranging seam conditions, there have been several failures in the past two decades. Analyses of those cases show that most failures can be attributed to inexperience, both operational and technical, including equipment selection. Therefore, personnel training on the longwall mining technique is absolutely necessary before its initial operation. Some earlier statements about adverse surface subsidence associated with longwall mining were misleading. Research has proven that surface subsidence under longwall mining is controllable and predictable. And, if longwall mining was mandatory since the onset of coal mining in the US, there would be no surface subsidence problems over abandoned mined land today. Introduction For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, scheduled to go into production by the end of this year, includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2.4 km (7,700 ft), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 m (2,000 ft) of development drifting and stope preparation. The project was conceived in the fall of 1979, and the duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is testimony to what can be accomplished when a mining company and a contractor work as a team rather than developing into two warring camps, as often happens. "The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

A review of published literature reveals case histories whereby the entire periphery of a coal pillar has “burst” out as a single event during first workings, the associated energy and material release causing significant damage to adjacent roadways and any equipment/infrastructure located within said roadways. Such events are distinct from coal burst events during first workings such as that at the Austar Mine in 2014, or those linked to overburden bumps related to either horizontal stress-driven slip along major faults and/or thick, massive strata units in the overburden or floor of the coal seam.

In recent years, junior mining companies, mostly listed in Canada, have taken a beating in the finance markets. Simply put, potential investors have been leery of sinking millions into exploration and mining projects due to volatile commodities prices and an uncertain regulatory climate in developed and developing countries. The 2014 edition of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), however, seemed to be a bit different for some juniors. Equity valuations have improved and metals prices appear to be stabilizing. So, for some of the stronger junior companies, there is some hope. Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity is picking up and, believe it or not, companies are raising some capital. Billed as the largest annual mining meeting in North America, the PDAC conference attracted more than 25,000 mining and exploration professionals from around the world. Organizers were anticipating attendance to break the 30,000 mark. But, given the state of the exploration end of the mining business, 25,000 is still a respectable number. Junior companies that are in the project feasibility stage, or have made promising discoveries that stand a good chance of proceeding to production, are being looked at by potential investors. Those are the survivors of the last three years of dismal M&A activity. On the other side are the juniors that are still around ? and there are plenty of juniors that were at the PDAC last year but have since disappeared ? but have little or no working capital. One analyst calculated that there are about 850 companies with less than $200,000 in working capital and about 600 with negative working capital. This will likely result in fewer junior mining and exploration companies as the year progresses but the ones that remain should be stronger.

The oil shales located in the Appalachian Basin cover an eight-state area of the eastern U. S., and are referred to as Devonian (black) shales. These shales have been exploited for their gas potential for several years. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has conducted research since 1972 on the production of shale oil from the Devonian shales, and this resulted in the development of the HYTORT process. This process demonstrated that the yield from the Eastern oil shales can be greater than the value indicated by the Fischer assay method. IGT estimates that 423 billion barrels (67.3 x 109 m3) of oil could be recoverd by HYTORT processing of surface-minable eastern U. S. shales. Recently American Syncrude Corporation and Southern Pacific Petroleum N. L. have proposed oil shale projects in Kentucky. This paper will describe the surface mining and retorting techniques that have been studied for exploitation of the Devonian shales, and enumerate the problems that have to be overcome before commercial production can be realized from these shales.

"Information diffusion potential of a social media user affects how quickly information about a mineral project can diffuse through that user. If management can use social media and network analysis in community engagement programs to understand how fast and how far information will diffuse to communities and followers of particular social media users, it can selectively focus on the most influential users. This article proposes a method to examine the information diffusion potential of social media accounts. The work uses Gephi, an open source software, to extract and analyze data from different Twitter handles to predict their information diffusion potential. The work uses case studies of real Twitter users (e.g. mining news organizations and bloggers) associated with mining to illustrate the approach. The case study results show that there are significant disparities in information diffusion potential that will demand selective attention. This research will help mines develop effective social media engagement strategies.The mineral industry provides raw material for industrial activity to support society (Martens and Rattmann, 2001). Mines have changed from conventional mining practices to sustainable ones because of the negative impacts of mining in the past and increased public awareness (Wang et al., 2016). The concept of sustainable mining is getting mature, as stakeholders (e.g., governments, investors and host communities) are getting more involved in mining projects (World Economic Forum, 2014). The failure of mining companies to address the demands of these stakeholders might result in the failure to acquire a social license to operate (SLO) (Thomson and Boutilier, 2011). The SLO, if granted, is mutually beneficial to all stakeholders. Mines prefer being granted SLO and keeping it to avoid any kind of social unrest due to their operation (Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014). Mining communities can grant different levels of SLO ranging from withholding SLO to psychologically identifying with the project (Joyce and Thomson, 2000; Thomson and Boutilier, 2011).Most of the previous work to understand community perceptions and SLO in mining is generally qualitative (ICMM, 2012a; Thomson and Boutilier, 2011; Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014; IFC, 2014). In particular, there is limited work on how community perceptions change over time due to information diffusion (Boateng and Awuah-Offei, 2017). However, SLO changes with respect to time (Yates and Horvath, 2013), which can result in risks that are not easy to predict. Mine managers and engineers have a desire to understand these changes so as to mitigate these risks (Que and Awuah-Offei, 2014; Que et al., 2015)."

Rock mass classification systems are core elements of tunneling and empirical mine design worldwide. The Bauxite division of S&B Industrial Minerals S.A. decided to implement a rock mass classification system in order to provide mining engineers and supervisors of the underground mines, with guidelines of stability performance and with a complementary tool for the selection of the appropriate tunnel support. The back analysis system employed is based on visual observation of especially selected underground mine sites, representative of all rock types. This fact combined with the failure or success of the already existing support system, constitute the fundamental part of the work undertaken. The paper is divided into three main parts. In the first part the classification methods of Q, RMR89 and GSI are presented and the advantages and disadvantages of each method in connection with underground mining are indicated. RMR89 and GSI are conclusively selected for use, the main criteria for the selection being, the simplicity in use and the competency of the support system suggested for each rock mass category. The second part points out the methodology for measurements, the practical difficulties encountered during this process and the guiding principles followed, in order to avoid these problems. In the third part, the final conclusion of this project is demonstrated and the different rock mass categories are presented with their relative support recommendations, as they were applied and tested in all phases of the bauxite mines? exploitation. The generated methodology is being implemented by the site mining engineers, for validation and potential improvement.

Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases.
