Representative sample s of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minnesota, were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation attained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine -grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80 to 95%.

The hydrophobicity of oil shale was found to follow the sequence R-5 > Mahogany >> Eastern. Further, hydrophobicity was found to correlate with the total organic carbon (TOG) content, decreasing with increasing specific gravity of raw oil shale pieces. Differences in hydrophobicity from piece to piece indicate that gravity preconcentration would be much more effective for Western than for Eastern oil shales. Purified kerogen concentrates and low specific gravity fractions (<2.0) of raw Western oil shale samples show critical surface tension of wetting values of [y]c = ~35 mNm -1, and for a kerogen concentrate from an Eastern oil shale [y]c = ~46 mNm-l. This infers that dust from oil shale mining operations can be suppressed by surfactant solutions similar to those used to suppress coal dust.

The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) and the regulations promulgated for that "Act" have resulted in changes to surface mining operations in order to comply with the stringent federally enforced reclamation requirements for prime farmland. In many instances the operator has modified surface mining operations to meet the prime farmland requirements through changes to mining equipment operation, addition of new equipment targeted for reclamation or the use of totally different mining techniques. The major challenge to mine operators has been how to use existing mining equipment to meet the requirements of the "Act." Freeman United Coal Mining Company opened the first new large surface coal mine in Illinois following passage of the "Act." The Industry Mine, located near Macomb, Illinois started mining operations during March of 1982 and was required therefore, to meet all of the requirements of the "Act" including prime farmland restoration. At the Industry Mine a shovel and a cross-pit bucket wheel excavator (wheel) are used for overburden removal and the wheel is addition- ally utilized to assist in reclamation operations. The wheel mines the subsoil thereby elliminating scraper placement of that subsoil and the attendant compaction problems with scraper placed subsoil. The wheel is used to convey topsoil stock- piles from the highwall to the mined overburden in order to lessen scraper traffic and possible compaction on the graded overburden during top- soil removal and replacement. Close control of the operation of the wheel yields more uniform wheel spoil ridges which then require less grading prior to topsoil replacement.

Gentlemen, I am pleased to address this gathering of engineers and operation managers representing a large and important segment of the metal and nonmetallic mining industry. Since you know from the printed program that the theme of my paper is the furthering of safety in open pit mines, perhaps you will have guessed that I will also comment upon the image created in the public mind by the industry&apos;s safety record and the potential consequences thereof in national health and safety legislation. Operators of surface mines have some cause to congratulate themselves on the basis of figures issued by the national safety council which show that lost-time accidents per-million-man-hours in surface mining (11.18), is lower than that of all other mining. Moreover, the accident frequency in surface mining is only slightly above the median accident rate for all American industry (8.87). That is a good record.

Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. "Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-economic problems surrounded by sustainability controversies yet continues extraction without considering the balance and finitude of nature. Nature requires restoration of equilibrium if mining and life on earth are to continue. Mining is still practiced according to Agricola’s views and the consequences it has wrought on our planet demand we critically reexamine it from its very core, to its metrics, to its design, to its technology, to how it is taught, and to reconsider its raison d'être in 2017. This paper offers tools to new mining engineers that are required to transform and solve new challenges. The task before us is to formulate an updated core curriculum that meets the demands and realities of the 21st Century. Mining professionals must rethink and reteach how to redesign mines before shovel hits dirt, how to mine with restoration of nature figured in to the mining design. Mining needs a new extractive technology in order to transform the results of its well-known liabilities. Mining has evolved and its future must be different than its past. Our industry is capable of doing this but it needs to be shown the way. INTRODUCTION The statement that ‘mining makes civilization possible’ is of the utmost importance and has the most value to us. We can examine the past and present appropriately to see the future that we are building. Mining must be addressed in a different way that makes a positive difference and improves upon rather than continues to get the negative impacts of the past. See Fig 1. Mining creates disequilibrium in Nature by producing ore, waste, tailing, dilution of resources, toxic, and pollution to its ecosystems. What is next for mining on a limited planet? Delaying the transformation of mining is not an option to developing an updated and modern mining business-as-usual paradigm. It is hurting the essentials of living in a civilization; our livelihood is in danger to the point of unrest in nature as we generate a lot of eco-print by present mining practices. So, we are urged to eliminate this bottleneck in life by employing a different design. This way, we will have a vision on how to sustain our civilization. [1]. This new design, with input from current and future generations, will be our contribution to posterity."

"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. Part of the results presented in this paper, were derived by the second author as part of his Master of Science thesis in Technical University of Graz."

Previous mine incidents show weaknesses in mine rescue preparedness from poor training in decision making, leadership and incident command center (ICC) protocols. Computer simulations offer a larger range of training opportunities for mine rescue teams focusing on exploration and communications. The mine rescue simulator developed by the Colorado School of Mines and Rite Solutions Inc. utilizes four computers for the instructor and team, with the instructor monitoring the team?s progress. As the team explores, it relays information back to the Fresh Air Base, which then reports to the ICC. This forces a three-step communication procedure, enhancing the team?s overall communication skills and developing ICC protocols. The simulator is decision-based, demanding team decisions be made quickly. Upon completion, teams commented positively. Generally, participants said that the simulator is useful for learning how to communicate and make decisions during mine rescue emergencies. This mine rescue simulator improves team training, providing effective communications practice with an easy setup and no production interruption.

Mine Development Associates, Inc. was formed in March of 1987 to provide mine engineering assistance to the mineral industry. To be competitive with other firms, Mine Development must be able to provide quick and accurate ore reserves and mine plans for clients. Commercially available mining software was necessary for Mine Development to assist the client. This paper describes how Mine Development chose mining software, the time involved in getting up to speed, and several case histories of how the software is used. The case histories discussed include: * 3,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 5,000,000 ton gold deposit in South Dakota. * 1,000,000 ton gold deposit in Australia. * +100,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 25,000,000 ton carbonate deposit in California.

The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines to enable mine operators to maximize longwall dust reductions, while optimizing the use of ventilating air and shearer water consumption. A recent investigation by Foster-Miller Incorporated, under a Bureau of Mines contract, quantified the effect of increased face airflow and shearer water supply on face dust concentrations. A 70 pct reduction in respirable dust levels was achieved at the shearer operator&apos;s position during tail-to-head cutting by an incremental increase in average face air velocity from 83.8 m/min (275 fpm) to 123.4 m/min (405 fpm), while holding shearer water consumption constant. A 60 pct reduction was achieved through an increase in shearer water pressure and flow from 9.1 kg/cm2 (130 psi) at 0.19 m3/min (50 gpm) to 19.7 kg/cm2 (280 psi) at 0.28 m3/min (75 gpm), holding airflow constant. The combined effects of increasing both parameters produced an 85 pct reduction. Optimal usage of ventilating air and shearer water consumption can be achieved by defining a "point of diminishing returns" above which further increases no longer reduce dust concentrations, proportionately .

Belle Ayr Mine was established in 1972 as the first large surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. During the mid-1980s, it was eventually out-distanced in productivity by newer mines, and management recognized that the mine must recapitalize its major mining equipment and enhance its workforce flexibility in order to be competitive in the deteriorating market situation. Therefore, state-of-the-art haulage and loading equipment was placed into service, and a 12-hour rotating shift and a technician-based workforce was implemented. Belle Ayr Mine is located 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming, in Campbell County (Figure 1). The mine is a part of AMAX Coal West, Inc., and with its sister mine, Eagle Butte, located 8 km (5 miles) north of Gillette, is a major contributor to the overall coal production of AMAX Coal Industries, Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas. This paper addresses mine planning, recapitalization initiatives, and innovative workforce changes which propelled this large, surface coal mine to the forefront of productivity in the ever tightening low sulphur coal market.

Introduction The endeavours to mechanise the shaft sinking operations have led to the development of shaft boring using a V-Mole. The method implies competent ground and a pilot hole of sufficient verticality. This connects the top and the bottom of the shaft and serves for air ventilation and the transport of mullock. The shaft boring machine - nick name V-Mole - with a general pattern similar to a tunnel-borer reames the pilot hole to the designed diameter of the shaft. (Figure 1) The excavating of the rock, the removal of the mullock from the face and the lining of the shaft wall are done simultaneously. If they can be done also continuously this than creates a high potential of productivity. The verticality of the shaft can be garanteed due to the laser beam guided steering system. The diameter of the shaft is variable in steps of 0.5 m between 6.0 and 10 m in accordance with the need. It decides the capacity of the V-Mole to be applied. The depth of the shaft does not depend on the machine. It is practically unlimited as long as a suitable pilot hole is available. Up to 1988 almost 12.656 m of shaft have been drilled on 40 individual projects in Germany and the U.S.A. using a V-Mole. The rocks penetrated were Carboniferous sediments consisting of Sandstones, Shales, Conglomerates and Coal seams. The average uniaxial compressive strength was in the range of 300 - 700 Mpa with a maximum of 1700 Mpa in some singular sandstones.

Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. INTRODUCTION The global market for sulphur has experienced dramatic structural shifts during the past 10-15 years. After a number of years of dominance as sulphur suppliers, the world&apos;s Frasch producers were confronted with large increases in nondiscretionary sulphur production from sour crude oil and gas, while escalating energy and exploration costs reduced the economic incentives to replace dwindling sulphur reserves. Sulphur demand also experienced substantial growth, but the majority of this increase was filled by nondiscretionary production. The result was essentially flat demand for Frasch sulphur during this period. This paper briefly summarizes Freeport Sulphur Company&apos;s outlook for global supply and demand for sulphur through the year 2000, and examines in more detail the history and anticipated shifts in trade patterns. World trade in elemental sulphur (brimstone), despite year-to-year fluctuations, has been on an upward trend in recent years, and should continue to grow through the end of this century. The type (discretionary vs. nondiscretionary) and location of forecast sulphur supply sources has potentially broad implications for the world&apos;s Frasch producers, as they compete in a world market which is increasingly supplied by non-discretionary production. SULPHUR DEMAND Sulphur is a versatile and essential element used in a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Almost 90% of world sulphur consumption is in the form of sulphuric acid. The relatively low cost, ready availability, and physical and chemical properties of sulphuric acid make it the most economical acid for a number of chemical processes. Although sulphur is used in the manufacture of many products, the largest consumer by far is the phosphate fertilizer industry. The majority of sulphur demand growth over the past 30 years has occurred in this area, and today it accounts for nearly 65% of global sulphur consumption in all forms. Due to the relative importance of phosphate fertilizers, sulphur demand is typically discussed in terms of fertilizer and non-fertilizer (or industrial) uses, and this approach will be followed here. We at Freeport believe that global consumption of phosphate fertilizers should grow at an average annual rate of about 3.5% through the year 2000, which is roughly equal to the growth rate experienced during the past ten years. The basic assumption underlying this forecast is that world population will continue to grow significantly, while the total acres of cropland will grow only slightly. Therefore, in order to feed a growing population, higher crop yields will be necessary, which in turn will require the increasing use of fertilizers. This expected growth in phosphate consumption will, without doubt, fluctuate from year to year, and we Frasch producers have painful memories of the large dip in demand during 1982-83. However, we believe that the fundamentals for growth are very good, and that future demand will move back onto the historical trend line. In the recent recession the use of sulphur in the non-fertilizer or industrial sector dropped sharply, and it now appears that future growth will not return to the old trend line. Most of the non-fertilizer uses of sulphur and sulphuric acid involve older industries which are very mature, such as oil refining, steel, pulp and paper, pigments, etc. The use of sulphur in some of these industries is expected to exhibit little or possibly even negative

"In April 2016, MSHA began requiring the use of continuous personal dust monitors (cPDMs) to monitor and measure respirable mine dust exposures to underground coal miners. After the cPDM’s implementation, mine operators discovered that it interfered with proximity detection systems (PDSs), thus exposing miners to potential striking and pinning hazards from continuous mining machines. NIOSH was sought out by MSHA and mining industry stakeholders to determine how the cPDM and PDS interact with each other. Accordingly, NIOSH investigated existing standards, developed test protocols, designed experiments, and conducted lab evaluations. Some interferences were observed to be caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the cPDM. Results showed that there was no significant interference when the cPDM and the miner-wearable component of the PDS were separated by distances of 6 inches or greater. In this study, the cPDM and PAD needed to be at least 6 inches apart in order for them to be used simultaneously and reduce interference potential. INTRODUCTION Underground coal miners are exposed to a variety of hazards on a daily basis such as coal dust exposure, high noise levels, roof and rib falls, the potential for fires and explosions, and operating and working with heavy machinery. One of the hazardous jobs is operating or working nearby a continuous mining machine (CMM). According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics, 40 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a CMM since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems have been developed and are required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face CMMs, by 2018 (1,2). Proximity detection systems (PDSs) are designed to alarm miners and stop machine motion in order to protect miners from being struck, pinned or crushed by CMMs(3). Currently, MSHA-approved PDSs, installed on CMMs, are based on the principle of magnetic flux density (B-field) (4,5). The system generates a magnetic field around a CMM and determines the relative distance a miner is from the CMM based on a detected magnetic flux density. A PDS typically consists of multiple magnetic field generators mounted at different places around the CMM, and personal alarm devices (PADs), which are worn by the miners to detect the magnetic flux density. When a miner, wearing a PAD, gets closer to the machine, the PAD detects a stronger magnetic field from the generators and detects a weaker magnetic field when a miner moves away from the machine. The magnetic field generators installed on CMMs typically produce modulated magnetic wave signals at frequencies between 10 kHz and 120 kHz. The magnetic fields are measured by three small magnetic coil antennas mounted on orthogonal axes inside of the PAD worn by the miner. According to Faraday’s Law, the changing magnetic field induces a voltage in each coil antenna, and the voltage values are transmitted from the PAD back to a controller on the CMM wirelessly, typically at a frequency between 400 MHz and 2.5 GHz. These values are then used to determine the distance between the miner and the generators of the machine. Typically this information is used to determine when a miner wearing a PAD is in a warning zone or stop zone which would trigger different alarms and actions such as slowing the machine down or stopping it."

Anomalies of sulfur dioxide and other gases have been defined, by direct measurement, around various sulfide bodies. These readings were made (1) in soil gas and (2) in the atmosphere, from both ground vehicles and, to a limited extent, from helicopters. Test areas included porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits, sulfide bearing vein systems, pyrite zones associated with sandstone uranium accumulations, and pyrite-bearing mine dumps. Some of the deposits are covered by as much as several hundred feet of overburden or barren rock, while others outcrop, or have been exposed by mining operations. Depending on local conditions, background values of sulfur dioxide in soil gas and the atmosphere range from 1 to 15 parts per billion. Using present techniques, anomalous readings are recognized at approximately two times background. Apparent "depth penetration? on known deposits has ranged to several hundred feet. Readings have been made over known deposits from a helicopter and ground vehicle moving at up to 40 mph. The rate at which the survey may be carried out depends largely on the size and extent of the anomaly. The existence and magnitude of sulfur dioxide anomalies around sulfide-bearing deposits is a function of geology, target size, soil moisture, and climatic conditions such as temperature and temperature changes, barometric pressure, wind velocity, and precipitation. Industrial S02 pollution can effectively mask the presence of the anomalies sought.

Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual&apos;s subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part &apos;strategic minerals geophysical research&apos;; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in Virginia includes parallel 1.5- mile (2.4 km) tunnels constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The TBM launching and receiving shafts were excavated within the footprint of two reclaimed islands abutting the navigation channel for the Port of Virginia. The shaft excavations—a circular tri-cell shaft at South Island, and a circular-rectangular twin-cell shaft at North Island—were supported by slurry walls up to 190 feet (58 meters) below the island surfaces. This paper describes specic design considerations for these shafts, as well as construction and uality-oversight aspects of their excavation and construction.

Mining tailings are slurry byproducts of mineral recovery. They generate serious environmental risks due to their toxicity when exposed to water and oxygen. Studies focus on eco-friendly alternatives for mitigating these environmental impacts. Processing these tailings enables a sustainable mineral production model through circular economy practices. This study evaluates using gold mining tailings to recover gold and produce bricks. Flotation tests obtained a concentrate with 86.66% gold recovery, containing sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite) and a tailing with silicates and oxides suitable for brick manufacturing and ornamental pieces. This approach promotes eco-friendly solutions and a greener approach to mining operations.

In December 1983 the author undertook an investigation in east Texas which was organized to learn the feasibility of applying geophysical techniques over shallow lignite deposits. The work embraced experimental high resolution seismic reflection and offset Wenner resisitivity sounds over three 1/4 to 1/2 mile test sections. This site also was sponsored by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a consortium headed by North American Coal Corporation. The principal objective of this investigation was to learn whether the aforementioned geophysical techniques could be applied over shallow lignite deposits (i.e. located at approximately 100&apos; to 300&apos; in depth) and consequently provide structural and stratigraphic information useful for resource and reserve characterization. A secondary objective was to determine if these same techniques could disclose the nature of the overburden and the distribution of ground water therein.
