When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. Bisbee and Ajo Study It turned out to be a busy half year, in addition to many good times with my Bisbee friends. The Uplift Club did not meet as regularly as in earlier years, but Mason Ross, Jim Lewis, Bill Gohring, Roy Mitchell, Hubert d'Autremont, Arthur Notman, and I did have many "bull sessions" and poker games. The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limit of an open pit mine during its feasibility study has become an emphasized procedure in mining. It is a normal practice in open pit mine design to generate the most profitable final pit limit. The limitations of designing this optimal pit limit have been the requirement of significant computing efforts as well as the use of complicated operations research techniques. In an attempt to describe a computer method that has an easy conceptualization and is able to provide a precise and desirable solution, a new technique is developed. The ultimate pit limit problem is formulated as a large scale transportation problem. The formulation is based on the use of a three dimensional block model to represent an ore body and surrounding materials. The solution technique is developed through solving the dual system of the formulated problem by using the adapted simplex algorithm of linear programming. The implementation on given case studies demonstrates that the new method is capable of providing an optimum pit value. The computing effort required by the algorithm is still the main constraint in solving a large scale problem. The technique provides open pit mine planners with an alternative tool in using a commercial linear programming software which is capable of solving a general transportation problem. The selected software must be able to handle a large scale problem, and it needs an additional effort td formulate the problem and transform a result into the ultimate pit limit solution.

The mining industry's image is molded by what the general public knows, or thinks they know about mining. As we prepared for the production of Caterpillar's educational film, Common Ground, we first had to find out exactly what the public perceptions about mining were. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As we broke down those perceptions, we were able to narrow our focus to relevant, realistic approaches for the film. We found out what people didn't know about mining. And most importantly, we singled out the facts they should know... facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in our final direction for the Common Ground project.

In April 1988, the joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen and Paschen Contractors (M-K/P) was the successful low bidder for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) Contract Number 73-164-2H. This project is yet another in the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) devised to control and treat overflows from combined sanitary and stormwater flows. M-K/P's project, located along the Des Plaines River, consists of 21,569' of tunnel mined to a 35' diameter and two tunnels totaling 14,529' mined to a 12' diameter. All three tunnels will have 12" thick reinforced concrete lining. The path for combined sewer/storm waters to reach the tunnels begins at a connection structure, continues through an approach sewer, a sluice gate structure and down a vertical shaft which is topped by a backflow structure. The purpose of the backflow structure is to prevent water surging to the surface as the system fills rapidly. Backflow preventors represent a change in design after problems developed on earlier constructed portions of the T.A.R.P.. On this project, 14 drop shafts channel flows to the tunnel system. In addition to the drop shafts, contract specifications require an emergency or escape shaft be located not more than 4000 feet from the tunnel headings. Due to long reaches without drop shafts, four access shafts had to be constructed. Thus, the total shafts constructed under this contract will be eighteen plus one 30' finished diameter construction shaft located within Miller's Meadows. Figure 1 shows the overall Des Plaines River System and the M-K/P contract connection to previous and future MWRD projects.

INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example of the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the United States [1]. According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global hard-coal mining industry has reached a stagnation phase [2]. The trend is obvious. Coal use peaked in 2013 [3], and the coal demand of China has been slowly decreasing since then [4]. Coal consumption in the United States saw a 16 percent decline from 726 Mt (800 million st) to 608 Mt (670 million st) between 2015 and 2019. In addition, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it will not rise again [5]. The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics, from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” [6] to federal environmental regulations like the Clean Power Plan. Moreover, important players like the United Nations and the European Union have already begun to describe pathways toward decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal-mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries, like France, Spain or Germany, are only forerunners of this development — their centuries of coal production have passed. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress in which ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can former mining regions sustainably progress to a better future? The steps Germany has taken to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process are described in this paper.

In today’s challenging mining environment, everyone is focused on minimizing cost per ton. With haulage costs approaching up to 45% of the overall mining costs, and loader performance driving production, optimizing payload on the truck is a big opportunity. This paper will focus on technology’s role in loaders achieving the truck target payload. There are constantly new innovations in technology, but not everyone uses them correctly. Technology is intended to help achieve the next level of performance, but still requires the right people and processes to effectively utilize the benefits. In today’s mining business, miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in past decades. Technology can make these roles more efficient, but fully relying on the technology can detract from optimization. Sometimes the old-fashioned method of loading to a consistent pass match will provide a lower cost per ton. Before blindly trusting your technology feedback, know these three areas discussed in this paper: (1) Prerequisites to utilize technology in payload management; (2) Types of payload management technology; (3) How to use the data to manage operator behavior. The objective of this paper is to provide low-cost recommendations to efficiently increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all, or they are the data-driven new generation on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to staff the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? Let the technology system do the rest; what could go wrong? Lots. Having examined numerous mining operations that use the latest loading technologies over the past several years, one common denominator is the opportunity to improve loader operator performance. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, but the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, not managing the resources to drive the right behavior and as a result, the mine’s performance is not where it should be. Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down. Extraction CPT (Cost-Per-Ton) is most sensitive to optimizing loader production which can be generalized into 3 categories of influence: machine specifications, cycle timing, and continuous management using technology. After establishing a basic production machine configuration, utilizing technology to manage cycle times, operator efficiency and payload can be advantageous. Prerequisites to Utilize Payload Management Technology It is important to begin with the primary considerations that enable the use of technology to continuously manage loading productivity. All systems are interdependent in mining, but these are divided into the simplest terms to remember. First, fix your timing and geometry.

This paper discusses the recently completed organizational development research project, which was addressed to the underground mining industry. The three specific purposes of the project were as follows: (a) to determine whether Organizational Development approaches are feasible in the mining industry, (b) to provide a demonstration that Organizational Development methods can successfully contribute to the safety of underground mines, and (c) to compare the efficacy of classical Organizational Development methods, which are highly trainer- intensive, with trainer-nonintensive management development approaches. The term "Organizational Development" (OD) is here broadly defined as a management intervention for the purpose of assisting an organization with the solution of problems, which are seen by the organization as important. More specifically, we can define OD as a planned effort to improve the effectiveness of an organization through (a) team building and problem solving, which concentrates on the issues of immediate concern to the organization, and (b) efforts to improve organizational communication at all levels of the organization.

Many Latin American countries are facing a scarcity of water. As such, infrastructure decisions are quite different from those made in parts of the world that experience a positive water balance. In the latter case, the water treatment approach tends to be ?treat and discharge.? For Latin American regions facing the challenges that go with a negative water balance, the focus is on resource optimization and reuse. Historically, the water challenge has had a significant impact on economic development in Latin America, especially in sectors such as mining, where water usage is high. At the same time, countries such as Chile and Brazil are major development targets for mining and oil and gas operations. Given the water supply challenge, industry is increasingly turning to technologies and processes that maximize water recovery and reuse. With sulfide precipitation and ion exchange water treatment processes for example, it is possible to treat and recover more than 99 percent of water for reuse onsite. These technologies have been applied successfully in other regions of the world where water conservation practices are essential to economic survival.

Coal preparation is based on the properties of noncombustable materials (impurities) in coal being different from the organic constituents. The most commonly used property difference is density, via its affect on settling rates; and either gravitational or centrifugal forces can be used to remove impurities. However, examination of various particles settling rate correlations shows that at smaller sizes, particle drag becomes a very important factor. Classification, based on differential settling rates, becomes impractical and some property other than density must provide the basis for fine coal cleaning. Froth flotation and agglomeration employ differences in surface properties to clean coal. These methods are very successful except that the oxidized surface of a pyrite particle is somewhat hydrophobic and will tend to be collected with the organic portion of the coal. Surface property cleaning techniques have not been very effective in rejecting sulfur, except for two-stage flotation.

Dense medium cyclones are the preferred means for cleaning 112 in. x 14 Mesh to 28 Mesh (12.7 mm x 1.0 mm to 0.6 mm) raw coal and are becoming a common choice for cleaning raw coal from a nominal top size of 2-1/2 in. to 3 in. (63.5 mm to 76.2 mm) down to 14 Mesh to 28 Mesh (1.0 mm to 0.6 mm). During the last ten years, dense medium cyclone circuitry design has undergone changes which have combined to improve process efficiency. This paper describes these improvements and compares present day design with the design used prior to the mid 1980's. Improvements in the following areas are described: Raw coal desliming, cyclone configuration, drain and rinse applications, dilute medium circuitry, and instrumentation and control.

Automation technology has many facets, some well tested and proven, some yet to be put to the acid test of economic reality. In this paper, we will limit our purview to the former. Consider, if you will, an automated handling system combining high-speed conveyors and automatic devices on-line which not only provide signals for routing and sorting, but also format those signals for the production of manufacturing, inventory, shipping and billing paperwork. This is not futuristic, but practical and a realistic accomplishment. Therefore, the following discussions will address today's challenges not with tomorrow's solutions, but rather, with an established technology which is playing an increasingly prominent role in materials handling systems. Until recently, relatively modest importance has been attached to the timeliness of information feedback from the production or assembly line, warehouse or distribution center. Thus, initial applications of automatic identification equipment focused almost exclusively upon the control of materials flow - that is, routing, sorting, etc. However, these systems have performed successfully and quietly established an enviable track record as reliable materials control tools.

A new system for leaching many types of ores has recently been developed on a commercial basis by J and J Research and Development, Inc. of Hanover, New Mexico. This revolutionary new leaching system consists principally of three new leaching reactors; viz, (1) a large, air-agitates, column-like reactor for leaching crushed ores that is constructed in an underground environment and has the inherent ability to do a very efficient job of leaching, (2) a vat-like, air-agitated vessel for leaching an rinsing finely ground ores and , (3) an air-agitated copper precipitation column that is built underground and utilizes an inexpensive dense or heavy scrap iron as a copper precipitant. Each of these new reactors have been used in a large leaching plant near Hanover, New Mexico.

[The two types of sulfide deposits in the Bathhurst Newcastle area are; (a) epignetic fissure deposits, and (b) massive sulfide deposits. Geological evidence has been variously interpreted to suggest a syngenetic origin, a source bed' origin, or a magmatic hydrothermal origin for the massive sulfide deposits. Sulfides disseminated through the black shales and argillites of the host rocks are enriched in S32 (mean value 22.34, S34. = 5.8 per mil) relative to the meteoritic standard of 22.21, and have a broad spread in range of values. S32/S34 ratios of sulfide minerals from the deposits occur in two distinct groups. The massive sulfide deposits exhibit ratios between 21.88 to 22.05, while the fissure deposits exhibit ratios between 22.18 and 22.21. These results suggest two separate sources for the sulfur, each, however, resulting in magmatic hydrthermal deposition because of the narrow spread of ratios in each group. Granite intrusive into the host rocks of the sulfide deposits have a mean K/A age of 386 ± 10 M.Y. Lead minerals in the sulfide deposits have a mean nodel lead age of 370±20 M. Y. Thus the lead minerals and the granite bodies were emplaced during the same major orogenic event. Sulfide minerals from magmatic hydrothermal deposit have a very narrow range of S32/S34 values, as do those of the Bathurst area. It seems reasonable, therefore, that well homogenized magmatic hydrothermal solutions are the most logical source of the sulfide deposits. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the lead isotopic abundance data gives strong independent evidence that the ores are of a magmatic hydrothermal origin.]

Soil next to a smelter abandoned about 100 years ago near Socorro, NM was found, by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to contain high Pb concentrations. Detailed characterization of the soil by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources (Bureau) shows that the highest Pb concentration is in the clay-size fraction, although this fraction accounts for only 1 to 3 wt % of the soil. The depth of contamination, determined in areas relatively undisturbed since the smelter was abandoned, is no more than 76 mm (3 in.). Because of the soil's alkalinity, the Pb mobility is dominated by the movement of Pb-bearing particles, as opposed to chemical transport in solution.

The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.

The existing Hetch Hetchy water system, owned and operated by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), serves 2.4 million people within the San Francisco Bay Area. The system has existing 1920s-era pipelines crossing under the Bay that are vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The SFPUC plans to replace the pipelines with the first TBM-driven tunnel underneath the San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance machine. The new tunnel will pass under environmentally sensitive habitats and will be approximately eight kilometers (five miles) long with no intermediate shafts. The project challenges will include tunneling through a prominent buried bedrock ridge that transects the alignment and through soft soils under the Bay. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake on one of the active faults in close proximity to the project site.

In past, no serious attempts have been made to study the effects of operating environments on performance characteristics of a mining system. In this paper, proportional hazards model (PHM) analysis technique is introduced which can be used to analyze the effects of operating environments on the performance of a mining system. It can be used to select suitable materials, manufacturers or designs of items for a particular working environment. In this paper some applications of the PHM are discussed with examples from a Swedish mine. Its application for decision making in maintenance is also discussed.
