In surface mining for coal, common practice for the disposal of preparation plant refuse is to bury it. As with surface refuse piles, these buried wastes can ignite and can also lead to ground and surface water pollution. Steps to ameliorate these problems have been devised over the years. C and K Coal Company, of Clarion, Pa., the largest Pennsylvania surface mining company, has incorporated all of these steps and added of few, of their own in their latest disposal practice. In addition to layering and compacting, C and K practices selective placement and dilution to minimize longterm problems.

Crystals of native gold occur in placer-type deposits. Gold, as a pure metal, is the most malleable metal known; therefore, delicate gold crystal forms should not survive mechanical transport and concentration processes involved in placer formation. To test the hypothesis that the crystalline gold is currently forming in place, two active gold-placer operations and an unmineralized background area in Alaska were examined. At these sites, rock outcrops, soil profiles, and native vegetation were sampled. At one sampling site, the soil was panned and yielded crystalline gold, as well as the more common rounded nuggets. The plants and soils were analyzed for their major, minor, and trace-element contents, especially gold. Two procedures, one a simple demineralized water leach and the other a partial digestion with acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, were also used to extract gold and various anions from soils. The water-extractable gold ranged from <0.02 to 15.0 ppb Au in the extracting solution. This represents as much as a 104 enrichment in gold over average river water. This extractable gold is probably available to the native vegetation. Gold concentrations in the unashed dry plants from the two placer sites ranged between 0.4 and 106 ppb compared to a background range of <1 to <4 ppb Au. The presence of dissolved organic matter in the soils is thought to be responsible for the dissolution, transportation, and precipitation of gold in these placer soils, and this process is presently active in these soil profiles.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica&apos;s future agricultural productivity. The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

Major precious metals projects are underway in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Zealand. This article reviews the status of those projects. Included in this review are project location, reserves, method of resource exploitation, anticipated production, and other unique conditions. The article is limited to major precious metals projects in the Western Pacific region. This is not meant to negate the attractiveness or importance of the many other projects in that area. The geographical setting of these five countries are shown in [Fig. 1]. The gold output of the countries has increased dramatically during the 1980s. [Table 1] compares 1980 and 1988 production figures. The compound growth rate is 120%. That reflects the attractiveness of the region’s resource base as well as the impact of price increases, new exploration models and processing technologies, and changes in government policies. If the 10 projects discussed here are all brought onstream, their combined output - at about 130 t (4.17 million oz) - would amount to an increase of greater than 50% over 1988 production from this region. Table 2 shows indicative production levels for each of the 10 projects. Dollar amounts are in US currency unless otherwise specified. Australian dollars have been converted to US dollars at the rate of 1.28: 1.00.

There are compelling reasons for us to look to our Country&apos;s Western coal. Despite its inherent low BTU content, Western coal&apos;s low sulphur content provides a near-ideal answer to satisfy our in- dependent goals of clean air and self-sufficiency in energy. Vast reserves, thick seams and amenability to low-cost strip mining serve as a powerful economic basis for its viability as a primary and dependable source of energy for the coming decades. A major consideration, the solution of which may not be quite obvious, is transportation cost. These abundant deposits are remote from the utilities of the heavily populated eastern regions of the United States (Figure 1). A Western coal mine in Montana is likely 1500 miles or more from an eastern power plant. The comparable distance to an eastern coal mine may be only 200 miles. Thus, the question is: How can the haulage cost of our Western coal be substantially reduced to an acceptable level? If resolved, western reserves of coal will be one of the key solutions to satisfying our Nation&apos;s energy needs.

At the operations level, productivity is a principle key to profitability. If you are competing with other mines that are paying roughly the same wage rate and the same prices for capital, materials, and energy, the only way your profit can be greater is by producing more output per unit of input. Mines with higher productivity have higher profit margins. Higher profit margins lead to greater operating cash flow, and cash flow is what distinguishes a dog from a cash cow. The turnaround in U.S. metals during the 1980s was in large part due to incredible improvements in productivity. According to statistics compiled by Kaufmann, 1991, labor productivity, measured as tonnes of primary production/manhour, increased 64% in steel, 94% in copper, 75% in lead, 143% in zinc, 132% in molybdenum, and 75% in gold. These improvements were hard won. However, with most modernization programs now complete, measuring and monitoring productivity becomes even more important as producers strive to maintain the gains they have achieved.

INTRODUCTION One of the main advantages of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is its adaptability to varying rock conditions. This method is therefore successfully applied when complex geologic features are expected which cause uncertainties in the prognosis of the rock mass behaviour, as was the care at the Arlberg Expressway Tunnel. Furthermore, by employing the NATM problems are avoided when encountering varying geologic conditions or even extension fault zones along the tunnel, as was the case at the Dalaaser Tunnel and Perjen Tunnel. The NATM can also be used for rock and soil. The following examples will show how various rock conditions can be mastered. In accordance with the NATM all tunnels which will be discussed are road tunnels having a cross section area between 70 and 100 m2. The construction consists of a primary support, which ensures stress redistribution during excavation (Figure 1). The primary support is reinforced shotcrete strengthened by steel arches, when necessary, and rock bolts. When encountering rock pressure, swelling rock or soil, the primary support is suplemented by an invert arch. The purpose of the secondary lining is to increase the safety of the tunnel with regard to long-term stress redistribution processes or changes in rock mass properties as well as to protect the insulation. The secondary lining consists of cast concrete without reinforcement and is generally 0.25 or 0.30 m thick.

A 200 pound per hour Magnex Pilot Plant was designed and constructed. A non-compliance Eastern Coal which would generate more than 2.0 lb of SOZ per million Btu upon burning was brought into compliance (less than 1.2 lb of S02 per million Btu) during continuous operation of the pilot plant. Approximately 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur was removed while recovering 86 percent of the Btu of the feed coal. Pilot plant operation is summarized and preliminary economics presented. Present status of the Magnex Program is reviewed.

Leaching studies of magnesite obtained from Tamilnadu Magnesite Limited, Salem, have been carried out using hydrochloric acid leaching and percentage of magnesium chloride recovered was estimated. The variables considered in this study were the following: duration of leaching, volume percentage of hydrochloric acid, temperature, and pulp density. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride increased with duration of the leaching, volume % of concentrated hydrochloric acid, and temperature. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride decreased with increase of pulp density. The optimum conditions found to be pulp density (10%), hydrochloric acid concentration (30%), duration of leaching (2 h), and temperature (348.15 K). Iron was removed by treating the leach liquor with hydrogen peroxide and by raising the pH to 3.5–4. The purified leach liquor was subjected to spray drying for producing high pure magnesium chloride.

Surface mining in arctic regions is characterized by many unique problems. Continuous and discontinuous permafrost (perennially frozen ground) occurs in most of the arctic and subarctic areas. Permafrost presents special problems of slope stability. Stability of permafrost depends on its temperature, moisture content, and material type. Permafrost slope fails due to solifluction, disturbance of ice-rich slopes, and liquefaction. Drilling and blasting of frozen ground present special problems. Depending on their degree of saturation with water, freezing soils and rocks have a number of important characteristics that affect blasting efficiency. Metals used in mining equipment and mining structures require special selection. At low temperatures, many steels lose most of their normal ductility and toughness (resistance to brittle fracture). This paper discusses engineering solutions to unique problems of arctic mining.

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex multiple seam mining geometries there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. For the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed and validated a number of software tools to aid in the development of safer mining environments with respect to improved roof support performance, pillar stability in longwall and room and pillar mines, formation characterization, the prediction of roof conditions, etc. These tools are available, free of charge, to the mining industry as stand-alone software packages. As cloud computing gains momentum, there is a definite need to develop internet based applications for mine design that would be easily accessible to any user at any time, including underground where permitted. This paper introduces a new web-based product which will allow for faster and easier access to existing ground control designs, on-the-fly calculations in the field as needed, and instant online collaboration between operations personnel and planning engineers. It is expected that the industry will rapidly embrace this product and, as it is common with all new innovative technologies, it will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. INTRODUCTION Since its release to the public in the late 1980's, the World Wide Web has drastically changed from a collection of static HTML web pages to a dynamic vehicle driving e-commerce, collaborative working relationships, and the mass distribution of information and media (Offutt, 2002). Recent developments in Internet capabilities, such as Cloud Computing and Software as a Service, have begun a migration away from desktop-based software in adoption of the web application (Hayes, 2008). Web applications, or web apps, are designed on the client-server architecture paradigm in which the client, or user, can interact with an application through web browsers without disrupting or installing software on potentially thousands of client computers (Nations, 2015). Currently, web-based software applications are being utilized in all business sectors and markets from commerce, finance, media, and even engineering. In fact, the Alabama Department of Transportation has developed a web-based geotechnical geographical information system (GeoGIS) for the management of and access to geotechnical and subsurface data for transportation projects across the state (Graettinger, et al., 2001). Similarly, Dyno Noble has developed a service application for explosive engineers. The Explosives Engineers' Guide application equips users with a full range of product information as well as on-demand blasting calculations for powder factor, airblast prediction, ground vibration, etc. Through the incorporation of a web server, one is able to utilize the functionality of the desktop-based software through a web browser located on any personal computer, tablet, or Smartphone (Vaughan-Nichols, 2002)."

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

There is recent evidence that high frequency screening can be a viable alternative to hydrocyclone classification for a wide variety of grinding applications. However, since high frequency screening is a relatively new development, the decision to use screens generally must be based on full scale screening tests of a slurry material of interest. In this paper the authors employ mathematical simulation models as an aid to evaluating the use of screens versus hydrocyclones for closed circuit fine grinding. This approach is validated in a pilot plant study and then demonstrated for the design of full-scale grinding circuit, including classifier cost comparisons. For the case of maximum production rates versus product size, without a constraint on fine product solids densities, results indicate that screening with Derrick sandwich type cloths can give higher grinding circuit production rates with more narrowly sized products than when hydrocyclones are used. These results are explained in terms of the bypass and Sharpness Index of the respective classifier partition curves. Classifier cost comparisons for the full scale circuit show that although the installed cost of screens is substantially higher than equivalent capacity hydrocylone operations, even modest increases in circuit capacity caused by screens; can significantly reduce total grinding costs.

The analytical pillar design procedure employing the Wilson equation is based on the site-specific material strength of the floor, pillar, and roof rock. Stable pillars so designed will sometimes be larger than those designed using empirical methods thus providing more stability or at other times smaller than empirically designed pillars thus conserving natural resources. Presented here is a detailed procedure for the analytical design of soft rock pillars using the Wilson Equation. An example of this procedure is presented that uses data from a mine in the Owl Seam in Southern Appalachia. These Owl Seam pillars are now in use and are performing as expected. Also addressed is an assessment of the Dr. Scovazzo?s analytically designed pillars based on pillar performance data gathered by Dr. Mark in the Southern Appalachian Coal Field.

Currently, there are several methodologies to assess ground vibrations from blasting. Of all available methodologies, one that is becoming more important is the waveform superposition or signature hole technique. This technique is based on a signature waveform assigned to each hole to build the complete waveform for the whole production blast, using the convolution between the time initiation sequence and the signature hole waveform. In the basic methodology of the signature hole technique, the waveform hole-to-hole is assumed to be the same. Several studies and field tests have proven that the waveform hole-to-hole, even in ideal rock mass conditions (rock mass with little or no joint system), changes. In addition to distance or confinement, other factors that could change the waveform hole-to-hole include different geologic paths from the source to the monitoring point and a different energy output of each hole, due to hole loading, explosive composition and/or contamination, priming, etc. These factors result in varying waveforms generated for each hole, making the waveform produced by each hole a somewhat random process. There is available in the literature some proposals to include variability in the waveform hole-to-hole, but the parameters involved are complex and difficult to estimate. In this paper, the variability in the signature waveform hole-to-hole in a blast event was recorded through a field test, and a proposal to include signature waveform variability to develop an equation based on the Fourier series is presented. This methodology is the basis for a future signature hole analysis using a Monte Carlo scheme, taking into account the variation of the amplitude and the frequency content of the waveform hole-to-hole in a production blast event.

INTRODUCTION In the past three decades, world trade has grown from less than $100 billion per year in the years following World War 11 to slightly more than $300 billion in 1970 and over $2,000 billion in the early 1980s. Adjusted for inflation, the real growth of world trade in 1972 dollars increased from less than $175 billion per year in the early 1950s to slightly more than $342 billion in 1970 and almost $700 billion per year by the early 1980s. Thus trade as a whole has increased a little more than twofold in real terms in the past decade." Mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of total world trade in 1970, and significantly more than that proportion in terms of physical volume. By 1980, de- spite rapidly rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities accounted for roughly 18% of the total value of world trade. Crude oil alone ac- counted for about 16%, making it the single most important commodity in international trade. The worldwide recession of 198 1- 1983 brought a dramatic decline in both volume and price of crude oil, shrinking the impact of mineral commodities to roughly 10% of the value of total exports, worldwide, in 1982- 1983. The decline of mineral commodities as a pro- portion of the value of world trade in the decade 1970- 1980 is due largely to the increasing importance of manufactured goods and consumer products such as automobiles and electronic items. During this period, mineral commodity trade expanded roughly sixfold in terms of current dollars to an estimated $350 to 360 billion in 1980. This was equivalent to doubling the real value of mineral commodities in international trade in the 1970- 1980 period in constant dollars. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has expanded the traditional definition of mineral commodities to include semifinished products such as iron and steel (in addition to iron ore), refined metals such as copper, lead, zinc, aluminum, and tin, concentrates, scrap, and petroleum products. Since large quantities of essentially mineral derivatives travel in this form, it is reasonable to use these expanded definitions in stating the role of minerals in world trade. Thus minerals in world trade comprise 30 to 33% of total export trade in all commodities during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.1). In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the value of all mineral commodities consumed in the world (at the national level) and compares this value to total worldwide commodity consumption. By this system, mineral commodities range from 30 to 40% of all commodities consumed each year in all countries during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.2). The growth in export trade in mineral commodities by commodity group is shown for the period 1976-1980 in Table 1.3.3. These data parallel the swings in worldwide economic activity during the same time period. "Reiche Zeche is a lead-zinc-silver deposit in Freiberg, Germany, that was mined for over 800 years. Since 1969, Reiche Zeche has been a teaching and research mine with numerous adits for dewatering large amounts of inflowing water. Infrequent metal water quality monitoring in the 1980-1990s and flooding of the mine in 2002 led to a lack of relevant data. New measurements were taken at different level adits and ore veins for comparison to historical values, revealing pH levels as low as 1.95, conductivity as high as 22000 µS/cm, and an overall trend towards less acidic waters. INTRODUCTION Reiche Zeche is part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, a former iron ore mine in Freiberg, Germany, in the Erzgebirge mining region of Saxony. The polymetallic sulfide ore found in Freiberg was mined from 1168 to 1969, and though it is no longer producing ore, Reiche Zeche remains as a teaching and research mine for the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg. The most important ore minerals mined were sphalerite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and silver, and important gangue minerals include calcite, fluorite, barite, siderite, and quartz (Zänker et al 2002). Over one thousand ore loads were mined from this region during operation, which was ceased in 1969 after the lower part of the 700 meter depth was flooded, leaving only the top 200 meters under the surface open for research and teaching. Mined materials from this region can be separated into high grade ore and waste rock. High grade ore, composed of pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite, was brought to surface for smelting during mine operation, and spaces were backfilled with waste rock, which is the primary site of sulfide oxidation and acid mine drainage (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). The waste rock includes remnants of ore from ore loss, veins which were too small to mine, or ore minerals within host rock. Waste rock is primarily composed of biotite gneiss, with sulfides including jarosite, gypsum, minor anglesite, scorodite, and sulfur (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). When weathered, the gneiss forms clay minerals such as illite and kaolinite (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002)."

Drainage improvements at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, IL included the installation of a drainage and storm water system to control the over?ow from nearby Willow Higgins Creek. This involved construction of a weir structure at the creek and the channeling of water from the weir to a newly constructed reservoir via three, 3.7-m(12-ft) diameter, underground storm sewer lines. The sewer lines passed beneath an existing, 2.3-m (90-inch) diameter high-pressure water main, which was to remain in service throughout sewer line installation. The soil composition around the water main ranged from medium stiff clays to silty sands and sandy silts. Triple-fluid jet grouting was used to stabilize the variable soil profile beneath the water main in preparation for tunneling and installation of the sewer lines. The varying soil strata presented a challenge to the project team to establish a constant set of jet grouting parameters throughout the stabilized zone while keeping within the specified unconfined compressive strength range for the stabilized zone of 690 to 1,380 kPa (100 to 200 psi)at 28 days.

Antamina is a large open-pit copper and zinc mine located within the Central Andes of Northern Peru at an altitude of 4300 masl. The facilities are situated within the headwaters of several watersheds, within the Amazon basin. Nearby villages rely heavily on springs and streams for drinking and irrigation water. The principle source of baseflow during the dry season is from Cretaceous karstic limestone aquifers. Antamina will produce nearly 1.4 billion tonnes of waste rock over its mine life. Finding suitable sites for storing large volumes of waste rock is often a challenging task – especially in karstic, alpine terrain. Detailed hydrogeological investigations are essential for delineating the karstic hydrogeologic watersheds associated with the proposed waste facilities, which are often very different than topographic (hydrologic) watersheds. Contamination vulnerability mapping at Antamina consisted of geological and karst mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical testing, dye-tracer studies, drilling and aquifer testing. Detailed mapping followed by dye-tracer studies proved to be the most cost-effective methods for characterizing the karst aquifer systems. The results were used to optimize waste rock management at the site to minimize potential impacts on groundwater resources.
