Prediction of acid rock drainage (ARD) for low-sulphide, low-neutralisation potential (LSLNP) mine wastes is methodologically different from that for normal sulphidic mining wastes. In this paper. LSLNP wastes are conveniently defined as those with S2 < 1% and ABA-NP2 < 20 kg CaCO3 eq/t. The distinctiveness of ARD prediction for LSLNP materials originates from their frequently low oxidation rates and is mainly attributable to two reasons. First, the utilisation efficiency of available carbonate neutralisation potential (CNP2) rapidly deteriorates when the sulphide oxidation rate per unit mass of waste drops below a certain level. Reducing the flushing rate of a waste has the same effect as increasing the oxidation rate. Second, silicate neutralisation becomes increasingly important as oxidation rates diminish, and can no longer be ignored in LSLNP materials as it often is for normal sulphidic mine wastes. In this paper, the effects of oxidation rate, pore gas CO2 partial pressure, and flushing rate on ARD prediction for LSLNP materials are theoretically demonstrated with the help of modelling using the computer program MINTEQA2. A new methodology for ARD prediction for LSLNP materials is presented in terms of a prediction procedure. Finally, a case study is given to validate some of theoretical aspects discussed and to illustrate the use of the newly proposed ARD prediction procedure.

Climate change presents risks to mine infrastructure, operations and long-term obligations to protect environmental conditions. Management strategies and design of infrastructure and containment systems based on past or current climate conditions may be inadequate in the future if changes in climate are not taken into account in planning for mine operations, decommissioning, closure and post-closure. Data-driven assessments using climate model projections of the future can be used to quantify: • Changes in site-specific risks to mine structures, access, containment facilities, operations and staff safety. • Changes in vegetation and water balance/chemistry, and potential for acid mine drainage, erosion and design failure. Climate- and weather-related risks are a serious threat to the mining industry, but risk transfer solutions can alleviate these vulnerabilities. Mining companies can protect themselves through bespoke solutions which provide operators, investors and buyers with protection against weather-related disruptions to operations by hedging to smooth revenues. Using risk transfer structures to mitigate climate risks is a mechanism that is available to all types of mining operations world-wide. In this paper, we describe methods for evaluating site-specific climate change impacts and developing risk transfer solutions to mitigate their effects. EVALUATING MINE RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE The best available tool for understanding potential future changes to the earth’s climate system are global climate models (GCMs) (IPCC, 2014). GCMs are computer simulations of the climate system which include the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere. Because of the computational demands of running a global model for many decades, the spatial resolutions of the GCM grids are necessarily coarse, typically on the order of 100-300 km. GCM data are therefore suitable for evaluating future physical risks on global or continental scales, but may not be appropriate for evaluating location-specific risks (e.g. Kotamarthi et al., 2016). For site-specific, quantitative physical risk assessment, GCM projection data are “downscaled” or adapted for use at the local level using statistical techniques together with observed data (statistical downscaling) or using high-resolution regional climate models (RCMs) that focus on a single geographic region and have spatial resolutions of 10-50 km (dynamical downscaling). Downscaling bridges the gap between the GCM scale and regional/local scale. Through the downscaling process, new information is added to the GCM output from observations and/or RCMs, resulting in patterns for weather variables that are more consistent with local terrain and weather influences. Downscaled climate change projections for the mine site are selected considering mine location and geography, the availability of local observations, and the performance of the downscaling method and global/regional models used to develop the projection in simulating the variable under study. Where possible, we use projections from an ensemble of global and regional model runs spanning a range of future greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios.

Aluminum silicate hydrosol synthesis and characterization are discussed. Plausible polymeric aluminosilicate species are presented together with their effect on electrokinetics of selected minerals and flotation response of various ores. The addition of aluminosilicate hydrosol to porphyry and oxide copper ores and to a tungsten ore resulted in enhanced flotation recoveries ranging from about 1.5 to 5 percent. A significant portion of the nation&apos;s mineral resources are presently lost in the form of particles with very fine grain size. In the case of copper, for example, approximately 225 million tons of ore are concentrated by flotation per year in the United States. Total losses from porphyry ores are generally 15 to 20 percent with half of these losses being finely-divided copper sulfide minerals which do not respond to flotation. The additional 5 to 10 percent loss is the result of copper oxide minerals which are not floated. The losses of copper sulfide minerals are thought to be due in part to the lack of appropriate dispersion of the finely-divided solids less than 20 microns in size. To effect dispersion in flotation systems, sodium silicate is commonly added. Enhanced dispersion effectiveness is achieved when polyvalent metal salts are combined with sodium silicate. Since originally described by Patek (1), numerous workers have explored the utility of metal silicates. Makrousov (2), Belash et al. (3), and Eigeles (1950) (4) showed the applicability of these reagents to calcite/apatite and fluorite/calcite ores. Mercade (5, 6) reported depression of calcite in the presence of 3.33/1 mole ratio Al/Si hydrosols prepared from Type N sodium silicate (Si02/Na20 ratio 3.22/1) and 1% A12(SO4) 3•18H20 solutions. He importantly observed that the colloidal precipitates did not play a significant role in dispersion and depression but that the soluble species were responsible for this action. Patented work by this author described metal silicates used to depress calcite in scheelite flotation using 1% metal salt (FeSO4•7H2O, CoSO4•7H2O, etc.) and 5% Type N sodium silicate solutions to produce hydrosols with Si/Fe or Si/Co ratios of 8.79/1. Aluminum (III) ion systems were less effective as depressants than the iron and cobalt systems. Yang (8, 9) has studied metal silicate sols for use in the flotation of lithium and ultra-fine hematite ores. Using 10/1 Si/Fe mole ratio hydrosols prepared from 2% ferric nitrate, Fe(NO3)3.9H20, and 5% Type N sodium silicate solutions, solutions, he showed that the hydrosols either modify the slime particle surfaces or are adsorbed on the slime particles preventing anionic collector adsorption. In a subsequent patent, Yang also reported the use of these hydrosols as dispersants for beneficiation of lithium ores. Recent studies of aluminum silicate hydrosols in the flotation of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and scheelite have been reported using Si/Al dispersants prepared from 5% Type N sodium silicate and 0.1 M aluminum chloride (A1C13.6H20) solutions. Dispersant properties were shown to be dependent upon the method of synthesis, supernatant pH, and the hydrosol Si/Al mole ratio. Polymeric soluble species in these hydrosolsupernatants have been proposed as the active dispersant species. Aluminosilicate hydrosols are synthesized by the general reaction scheme presented in Figure 1. Commercial sodium silicates are available with ratios of SiO2 to Na20 of 1.60-3.25. The sample which is most frequently employed is Type N whose ratio of Si02/Na20 is 3.22/1.00. Gel filtration chromatography and NMR studies have shown that these sodium silicates contain numerous species of molecular weight from 325-2,000 gm/mole. Monomeric, oligomeric and higher molecular weight linear polymeric arrangements of these structures are found in these solutions.

INTRODUCTION The project described in this paper is designed to provide a standard and flexible method by which data can be exchanged among different systems and packages in common use for geo- logical modelling and mine planning, with substantial savings in ad hoc programming which is expensive and produces interface software that is difficult to maintain. Such packages include specialised applications such as Vulcan, Surpac, Datamine, and Gemcom software, and the Whittle pit optimisation programs, and more general products such as AutoCad, Microstation, and Maplnfo, and database management systems through a generic SQL interface. The data translator is built around the CSIRO Data Model and GeoEditor, and will make widely available the benefits of the Data Model by adding functionality to its implementation in an industry- standard language and style, with interfaces to important geological and mining software products used by the industry, while including also the visualisation and editing capabilities of the GeoEditor which provides the functional framework within which the Data Translator is developed. The Data Translator is intelligent in the sense that it is not a black-box solution but allows visualisation and validation of data during transfer; furthermore it provides a means for changing abstraction levels during the transfer operation. There have been few similar efforts to address this problem. It is not a problem which is likely to be solved in any general or long- term way by any individual commercial software vendor. THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software. The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. It has been developed over the past two years by a joint team from the Division of Exploration and Mining and the Division of Information Technology, and its principal purpose is to provide a comprehensive and self consistent model of the geometric and topological properties of geological and mining data. The project is being carried out by CSIRO with the support of Australian mining companies through AMIRA (the Australian Mining Industries Research Association). In 1977, Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Mining was developed at the Homestake Mine and by 1983 had become a fully integrated mining method contributing 60% to total underground production. VCR has proven successful for continuous ore blocks exceeding 55,100 tons (50,000 st) with dips greater than 60" and provides a productivity average of 39 tons (35 st) per man shift (tpms) which is 92% greater than Open Cut-and-Fill. Discontinuous ore bodies, small pods, or flat structures not amenable to bulk systems are mined with Mechanized Cut-and-Fill (MCF) and have been able to achieve a 32 tpms (29 st) average productivity. Small, low grade, remnant ore bodies were not economically viable with large scale bulk techniques and couldn&apos;t support the development required for a MCF system. As a result, Homestake began researching modified bulk mining methods to increase production rates and maintain safety, while lowering costs. A modified version of VCR with significantly diminished development was prototyped in an effort to reduce initial capital investment and expedite the production phase. This modified method is called Small Block Vertical Crater Retreat (S. B. VCR). Geology The Homestake Gold Mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota at Lead. Having been active since 1876, it now extends from the surface to the 2,440 m (8000 ft) level underground.

"The Ejpovice tunnels in Czech Republic were built by EPBM in soft Clyashale, and in weathered profile with low soil overburden. The segmented liner at the cross-passage openings required support, which would not interfere with the EPBM clearance envelope during the scheduled pull back of the EPBM through both tunnel tubes. For that reason support frames or radial bolting could not be used. Steel rods inserted into the neighboring segments during the ring assembly, and later grouted were tested and realized as an innovative solution. The paper presents practical experience gained with the segmented liner support during cross-passages construction. INTRODUCTION An innovative solution using the grouted dowels was developed and realized for sixteen cross-passage openings of the twin Ejpovice Tunnels, whose construction was part of the railway track Rokycany – Plzen modernization. The following paper described practical experience gained with the innovative support of cross-passage openings, which was realized by short steel dowels grouted within the segments of the EPBM segmented liner. The paper is a continuation of the paper published in WTC 2015, which described the design aspects of the grouted dowels support, while the following paper concentrated on the production, and the performance of the dowel support observed during the breakout for the cross-passages openings. The connection by grouted dowels was patented by Metrostav, a.s. Company THE EJPOVICE TUNNELS CONSTRUCTION The Ejpovice tunnels construction started in 2013. The start of the high speed train operation through the tunnels was planned for 2018. The project was funded by the state government with the support of European Union funds of up to 70%.The tunnels were excavated with one EPBM (Earth Pressure Balanced Machine) with the external diameter of 9.89 m. The segmental liner inner diameter was 8.7 m, and thickness of 0.4 m. First, the South tunnel tube was excavated from the East portal, then the EPBM was pulled back through the South tunnel, and the excavation was started from the same portal for the North tube. After the South tube was freed from the EPBM excavation operations the cross-passage construction started. Due to the short time schedule, in the North tube the cross-passage construction started while the tunnel was still under construction. Therefore, the cross-passage construction was performed concurrently with the segments transportation, and with the EPBM pull-back through the tunnel. There were 8 cross-passages along the tunnels with a maximum distance of about 500 m, Fig.1."

This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

Hydraulic slurrying and pumpability characteristics of phosphate matrix (ore) have not been quantitatively defined. An elemental triangular diagram analysis of rock/sediment texture is used to classify the nature of the ore; then related to empirical field data of hydraulic pressureand production yardage ratios. This experiment is applied as a geotechnical tool to provide empirical data of ore slurry and pumpability characteristics as key considerations in the design of slurry pipeline systems. A real texture variability maps are developed on a section of land to assist mine engineering planning.

"The contract C931 of the downtown line 3 (DTL3) mass rapid transit system of Singapore includes half a kilometer twin tunnels running between Mattar and Macpherson stations. An EPB TBM of 6.6 m diameter was used to excavate both of these tunnels. The tunnels pass predominantly through a very stiff silty/clayey fine to coarse sand from the Old Alluvium Formation. In this paper, TBM selection procedure, TBM performance evaluation, and some of the tunneling operation challenges with the TBM in the Old Alluvium Formation are discussed. In this regard, soil conditioning trial tests were performed to resolve the clogging issue and low TBM performance. Thorough TBM operational data analysis was performed to detect high soil abrasivity, backfill grout leakage, and foam nozzle clogging. The results of some of the applied modifications are also discussed to show their effects on the TBM performance improvement. Finally, some of the challenging TBM design specifications are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground construction in Singapore has been increased in the last 30 years due to the demand for public transportation systems and the limited space above the ground for the infrastructure development. Downtown Line Stage 3 (DTL3) Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has 21 km total route length and consists of 16 stations. DTL3 Contract C931 runs between Mattar station and MacPherson station. The construction works in this contract include twin bored tunnels of 6.6 m diameter and 450 m length and a TBM launch shaft of nearly 30 m depth. The tunnels run in urban area below Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway tunnel (KPE), Kallang River Canal, and Circuit Link. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the tunnels in between two subway stations. The tunnels were excavated by an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the Old Alluvium (OA) formation, a challenging geological formation in the sense of its abrasivity and stiffness. The Old Alluvium Formation mostly includes stiff to very stiff clayey and silty sand. The soil is un-weathered cemented to semi-cemented dense, mainly with a low permeability coefficient of 10-7 m/s and high SPT values (almost 100). The soil is classified as “very high abrasive” according to NTNU SAT test classification (SAT value of 15 to 42). The construction of the first tunnel drive was slowed down due to a number of factors related to soil conditioning and TBM operation. In this regard, a thorough analysis of the TBM operational parameters from the excavated sections was performed to identify the problems in time to prevent unwanted construction delays in the subsequent sections. In the following sections, a brief overview of the criteria used for TBM selection is presented at first. Then, the results from the analyses and tests performed to assess soil conditioning, grout leakage, and soil abrasion are presented. The last section discusses some of the tunneling design features that challenged the TBM operation in this project."

There are no formulas that guarantee success when it comes to obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often times represent the most controversial issues faced by community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and probably most importantly fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. Add to this the public hearing process which is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately not designed for resolution of disputes and it is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day we will have a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive and unmanageable community conflicts.

To address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the Narragansett Bay Commission completed a comprehensive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facilities Plan in 1993 which included a series of deep rock tunnels. Since completion of preliminary design of the program in 1994, the program has been reconfigured in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new CSO policy. The currently proposed system consists of a deep rock tunnel with two tunnel stubs which will provide230,000 cu m (62 million gallons) of storage at depths of up to 90 m (300 ft). This paper discusses the revised 5 km (3 mile) long deep tunnel system.

There are similarities, and differences, in the surfactants used in cosmetics and detergents. In both applications anionic surfactants constitute the major category. Their main function is to clean, i.e. remove grease and particulate matter from fibrous or hard surface substrates. Cationic surfactants are used for conditioning substrates. Nonionic surfactants can function as a substrate cleanser but are seldom used as such in cosmetics; however, selected non-ionics are often employed as a primary emulsifier. Several specialized nonionic surfactants are used as a secondary surfactant in formulations to promote foaming and emulsification. Specific examples and modes of action of surfactants will be presented.

United states reserves of oil and gas have been steadily declining while consumption of petroleum products has continued to increase. The nut result has been an ever increasing shortfall between supply and demand. This imbalance has been made up by imports of both oil and gas causing a strain on the United States Balance of Payments. To complicate the situation further, exporting nations have recently formed a cartel and dramatically increased the selling price of petroleum products. To meet U.S. energy demand, increased attention has been drawn to the production of synthetic oil and gas from coal. To date, considerable research has been conducted and is continuing on various processes for liquefaction and gasification of coal. Some of these processes are now in the pilot plant stage and at least one demonstration plant has been proposed. The coal conversion complexes envisioned will be very large, requiring substantial capital investments and abundant reserves of coal. Coal production to feed these proposed complexes has been estimated on the order of 75,000 tons per day. With the viability of these projects becoming economically attractive, the Office of Coal Research initiated a contract with Fluor Utah to determine and define the problems of surface mining coal at very high mining rates, under varied physical, geographic, and climatic conditions. The flow of recent events in the Middle East has created a greater sense of urgency for this study.

A practical approach to elope stability design of heap leaches up to 90 m (300 ft) high is presented based on recent experiences with heaps throughout the Western U.S. Shear strength parameters for foundations, ore and liner systems are considered, with particular attention given to frictional contacts between geomembranes and clay or geotextiles. Stability of both ore and containment dikes is discussed including the effects of seismicity, staged dike construction, progressive heap development and in-heap solution levels. Design criteria and methods of analyses are presented along with techniques for improving stability.

The size distribution and mechanical strength of the iron ore pellet burden are important parameters in determining the efficiency of the blast furnace. From the very outset, the guiding principle of our pellet quality improvement program was that these parameters are also the key to improving productivity and cost control at the pellet plant. Cosmo Howley is a gold deposit in the Northern Territory of Australia. The geology is complex and the input of geological data is an important part of the grade control process. As the geology of the deposit has become better understood, grade control and mining techniques have evolved to meet the changing circumstances. Present grade control depends on the use of angled blast holes, 21/2 benches and selective mining. Data is processed on site using 2 386 PC&apos;s running Surpac software. An environmental protection programme is employed, including soil stripping and stockpiling, sulphide waste containment and water quality monitoring.

The Coteau Properties Co.&apos;s Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mine that uses large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity and distance. The system was also used to provide historical information to plan the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. The Coteau Properties Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corp. The company was formed in 1972 to supply lignite from its Beulah-Hazen coal reserve to a coal gasification project and an electrical generating facility located near Beulah, ND. The reserve consists of a single coal seam between 3 and 7 m (10 to 23 ft) thick. The overburden above the coal is predominately glacial tills and clays and ranges from 6 m (20 ft) to more than 60 m (200 ft) thick.

Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

Traditional approaches to learning struggle for scale and an inability to respond to the extreme diversity of capability development needs. In response, Rio Tinto has successfully introduced innovative approaches to learning and employee engagement via leveraging the power of globally distributed networks for peer-to-peer knowledge transfer and providing mechanisms to recognise, reward and retain the individual technical contributors.

Information will include operating companies, mine locations, ore grade, and chemical analysis, geological environment, and production capacities. General comments will be made on the distribution of production and its relationship with major consuming regions. The pattern for the future will be assessed, including potential new producers, changing specifications and industry structure.
