Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unvrorked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 50's saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in produc- tion of natural iron concentrates. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 60's as agglomerated products and foreign ore s began to dominate the U. S. market.

In 1910, Colonel Boyce Thompson, who owned Inspiration (now Cyprus Miami) and various other mining interests, formed the Magma Copper Company and leased the Silver Queen claims around Superior, Arizona. At the same time, he purchased other claims around the Silver Queen claims from what was then called the Magma Mine. The mine continued to operate until 1982 when Newmont Mining Company, who owned Magma Copper Company, shut down the operations due to high costs and low copper prices. When Magma was spun off by Newmont as an independent company in 1987, new studies of Superior were started. It was clear from these studies that the mine had been shutdown and over 1400 employees laid off for two basic reasons: first, as a resu1t of a mine plan that was technically flawed and second, be-cause of very high production costs mainly due to the low productivity from a very high cost work force. During 1989 a plan was formulated to re-open Superior with the determination to over-come the problems that resulted in closure. A new mine plan was developed and a management style developed that promotes team work and high productivity.

"INTRODUCTION The construction of the BAB 44 motorway between Kassel and Herleshausen (both Germany) is an important part of the trans-European road network. After its completion, the A 44 will permit an efficient connection of the Benelux States in the West and Poland in the East. In the section between Eschenstruth and Hessisch Lichtenau the Hirschhagen Tunnel is constructed with a length of 4.1km. Most sections of the tunnel are situated in weak ground conditions. Hence a combination of face bolts with spiles (short forepoling) or pipe umbrellas (long forepoling) additionally support the tunnel heading on a regular basis This article will focus on the application of a newly developed method to connect the pipe umbrella support, which is mostly installed by conventional drilling machines nowadays. The installation method limits the outer diameter to a maximum of 168mm and a pipe wall thickness of 12.5mm because workers must be able to handle pipes and its drill steel. Typically these pipes are connected with threads that create a weak link in the support system so during the last decade alternative connection systems were developed to overcome this disadvantage. One of these alternative coupling systems is the so called Squeezed Connection, which will be explained in this article followed by a discussion of its advantages and disadvantages regarding technical specifications, construction time, and safety issues. THE HIRSCHHAGEN HIGHWAY TUNNEL The German highway A 44 directs from Aachen through the Ruhrgebiet to Kassel (all Germany) and it is extended to Herleshausen (Germany). The new section connects the A 7 to the A 4 after completion. This upgrades the east-west highway connection starting at the Benelux Union and heading to Poland so it is an important part of the trans-European road network. The newly constructed section has a total length of approximately 63 km and comprises 13 tunnels. All tunnels are constructed as double tube tunnels with 2 lanes and emergency sidewalks on both sides and 14 emergency cross passages. The Tunnel Hirschhagen starts in the north of Eschenstruth and ends near Hessisch Lichtenau (Figure 1). The length of the northern tube is 4,147 m and that one of the southern tube is 4,204 m. So it is the longest tunnel of the A 44 and the second longest highway tunnel in Germany when it is put into operation. On its alignment it crosses underground the Losse valley with the state road 7, the streetcar Kassel-Hessisch Lichtenau and the Losse stream. The cover above crown varies from 10 m to 95m and it is the lowest when crossing the Losse stream."

The flotation behavior of Florida phosphates was studied using statistical design of experiments to evaluate conditioning parameters and their effect on flotation performance. The solids loading, conditioning time and agitation speed during conditioning were identified as the important variables affecting the reagent coating onto particles. Flotation of the conditioned slurry was carried out at fixed collector dosage and flotation conditions. Phosphate recovery upon flotation was statistically modelled as a function of the conditioning variables. The results indicated that the conditioning variables had an interactive effect on the phosphate flotation performance. Statistical optimization revealed two conditioning regimes in which optimum flotation recovery was obtained. It was determined that optimal recovery can be obtained at lower conditioning energies.

Ground deformations are of major concern during tunneling, especially in downtown environments, since they have a significant impact on the costs and practicality of tunneling. This case history describes soil and groundwater conditions and ground behavior during the construction of twin transit tunnels for the Downtown Seattle Transit Project (DSTP). The tunnels were excavated through complex glacial soils ranging from hard glaciomarine drift to flowing sand. The tunneling process was greatly facilitated by the prediction of soil layer positions to an accuracy of ±0.6 m (2 ft). Tunneling was complicated by the presence of over 500 temporary tiebacks and by disturbed ground overlying an operating railroad tunnel. A variety of ground improvement techniques were used to successfully minimize settlements, which ranged from 1 cm (0.4 in.) in glaciomarine drift to 6 cm (2.4 in.) in flowing sands. Ground improvement techniques included compaction grouting, chemical grouting, jet grouting, and eductor well systems.

In late 2007 Neptune Minerals Plc. commissioned Genesis - a leading consultancy and engineering company affiliated to the Technip group - to undertake a Seafloor Mining Conceptual Study for mining of Seafloor Massive Sulphides (?SMS?) in Neptune?s New Zealand licenses. A key deliverable of the study was information to de-risk the perception of SMS mining for investors the minerals, and that deep-sea mining of SMS material is technically feasible, commercially viable and can safely be managed as a sustainable marine resource industry. The aim of the study, completed in April 2008, was to evaluate alternative existing marine technologies for seafloor mining, ore lifting, dewatering and surface offtake, considering the following parameters: ? Since 1978, the Colorado Department of Health has become involved in specific investigations of possible radiation hazards among nonminers in Colorado communities. In each instance, the improper disposal of mill tailings has precipitated concerns and allegations of radiation hazards. This presentation is a brief summary of the findings, to date, of 4 such investigations involving tailings disposal problems in Canon City, Denver, Durango and Grand Junction, Colorado. Canon City In the summer of 1979, allegations of excessive cancer incidence were made at public hearings concerning an application for a Radioactive Materials License submitted to the Colorado Department of Health by the Cotter Corporation for a uranium mill at Canon City. Canon City is the site of a uranium mill operated since 1958 by Commonwealth Edison. Local residents accumulated figures and calculated rates suggesting a 2-fold excess in total cancer mortality. These rates were not adjusted or standardized for demographic varibles. A review of cancer mortality data and computation of age standardized rates for years 1950 through 1977 showed that Canon City's cancer mortality rates were within expected limits, actually lower than rates for the State of Colorado or the United States. The first slide shows rates for every fifth year, 1950 through 1975. Further, an analysis of Canon City cancer incidence data from the Colorado Central Cancer Registry revealed that 1979 incidence rates were not significantly different from Colorado rates, with the exception of prostate cancer. The next slide shows age standardized incidence rates for lung, colon, breast and prostate cancer. Data were also reviewed for leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma and cancers of the thyroid stomach, uterine certix, ovary, kidney, bladder-and brain, however, small numbers of cases prevented meaningful rate calculation. 1980 data are presently being analyzed. None of the data yet examined support allegations of radiation-associated cancer in Canon City. Denver In February of 1979, the Department of Health became aware of a number of radium mill tailing deposits in the Denver metropolitan area, remnants of the radium milling industry of the early 1900's. Several of the deposits were situated so as to possibly contribute significantly to radiation exposure of a small number of people over a period of several decades. The Department developed protocols for radiation surveys, dosage estimates and, for a small number of persons, body burdens determinations and peripheral blood lymphocyte cytogenetic studies. The results of this investigation suggested no measurable biomedical impact as a result of the radium deposits. Durango In October of 1979, a physician residing in Durango, Colorado released information from a preliminary analysis of lung cancer data suggesting an incidence rate several times expected in that city. The data were presented at a meeting of a citizen's group concerned about the possible health hazards of 2 uranium mill tailing deposits located in the south end of the city. Since cancer incidence data generally do not exist in most of western Colorado, a team of epidemiologists was dispatched to Durango to work with local physicians and hospitals in conducting an epidemiologic study of selected cancers for the period 1969 through 1978. After case-finding and record abstracting were completed, it was determined that sufficient data were available for study of only 3 sites: lung cancer, breast cancer and leukemia. The next slide shows age standardized incidence rates for these 3 sites for 1969-1978 for Durango and the State of Colorado. There are no significant differences in these rates. The data did show a geographic peculiarity with regards to the relative proportion of tumor types near the tailings deposits as opposed to away from the deposits, however, this finding is based upon very small numbers of cases and may represent only the random excursion of rates based upon small observations. This investigation suggests that if a carcinogenic hazard is present, it is too small to be detected by the study method employed. Grand Junction The Department of Health has been involved in the Grand Junction mill tailings problem for several years. In 1966, the Department issued an order terminating the practice of free public access to a 55-acre pile of uranium mill tailings. Prior to this order, an estimated 300,000 tons of material was removed. Of this amount, an estimated 50,000 tons was presumably used in residential and commercial construction. Despite many allegations of cancer and birth defects excesses in Grant Junction since the mid 1960s, the first epidemiologic study of cancer was conducted in the spring of 1977. Data from the Colorado Central Cancer Registry were analyzed and reported to the Executive Director of the Department of Health in June of that year. The findings of the first and preliminary study were an unexplained excess of acute leukemia and chronic myelocytic leukemia. The excess was based upon small numbers but was present across all age groups. No increase in chronic lymphocytic leukemia was evident.

With increased levels of automation, capitalization, and empowerment of citizens, the traditional axis of labour versus capital or national government versus capital, upon which the allocation of benefits from a mining project was traditionally based, has shifted primarily to a capital versus community axis. In light of this paradigm shift, it is critical for the sustainability of mining that economic indicators be considered at the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and permitting stages of a project. Such indicators should emphasize the ?ripple effect? of the economic impact of a capital-intensive mining investment on a region due to outsourcing, as well as the diversified spin-off opportunities and the technological advances that can be exploited by local communities.

Mandalong Mine was originally planned to operate with panel widths of 250 m and a predicted surface subsidence in excess of 3 m. The consent conditions applied by the NSW government on this mine plan were very tight and, following a change in ownership, were considered by the new operator to present a number of unacceptable business risks An acceptable risk profile for the mine layout restricted surface deformations to less than 500 mm vertical subsidence, less than 7 mm/m tilt, and less than 5 mm/m strain. Empirical subsidence prediction methods indicated that it would be necessary to reduce extraction panel widths of 80 m - an uneconomic option. The application of a number of rock mechanics concepts identified that the local overburden geology could be exploited such that panel widths of up to 175 m could be possible. The 125 m width was selected as a low-risk introduction of this new subsidence prediction method. The extraction of the first 2 longwall panels has demonstrated the validity of the prediction subsidence method and has provided the opportunity to refine the selection of key input parameters. The impact of mining through a zone of thrust faults was successfully predicted. The mine is now planning the introduction of 160 m wide panels, and will review the associated subsidence impacts prior to any further increases in width.

In cold regions rinsing of spent cyanide leach heaps is stopped during winter and is resumed again after snow melts. The effect of this idle time on the overall cyanide removal process was studied in this work. Samples were collected for rinsing tests from one heap at the Ryan Lode Mine of Citigold Alaska, Inc., near Fairbanks. The material was tested for cyanide removal a large column, 1.22 m high by 20 cm square, and in a small column, 1.22 m high by 10 cm in diameter. The rinse water was analyzed at regular intervals to determine the rate of cyanide removal from the solids. It was found that diffusion plays a major role in the removal of cyanide from the ore particles. Calculations showed that the insulating effect of the snow cover on the heap provides an excellent moderates the interior temperature of the heap, and would be expected to help the progress of the diffusion reaction during winter. The result expected result wil1 be higher cyanide values reporting to the rinse water after snow-melt.

It is generally known and accepted that the efficiency of the blast furnace process, expressed by the symbols specific production and coke consumption, is influenced by a large number of variables connected to the type of burden, the alloy contents of the produced iron and the conditions of production as composition and preheating of the blast, the furnace heat losses and the possible use of fuels added on the tuyere level. It is furthermore obvious, that the coke consumption of the process will be influenced by specific production which could be said to be the result of two counter-acting influences. With high production, realized through intensive blowing, the passage time of the ore through the furnace is shortened leading to a decrease of the indirect reduction taking place in the upper part of the shaft within the temperature range of 300 to 1000°C. Simultaneously the external heat losses (constant in time) will be smaller calculated on each ton of iron and the resulting change in coke consumption will be the effect of both those influences. It is certainly of interest to be able to predetermine the effect of those variables before a change in the production practice is carried out.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. Throughout the 1960's and 1970's world trade grew rapidly, reaching a peak of USS1.8 trillion in 1980. Since then the world recession of the early 1980's shrunk trade to about US$1.6 trillion. The reduced cash flow to developing economies made it difficult to service their huge international debts, Nowadays lenders are reluctant to grant Third World countries additional credit. The shortage of export financing, plus trade barriers set up by developed countries, is further inhibiting international trade. Therefore, countries are turning to new and creative alternatives to financing imports of consumer as well as of investment goods. Non-cash transactions, including different forms of countertrade, are rapidly growing alternatives to traditional trade financing patterns. In 1983 about 30% of international trade, or close to US$600 bill ion, were presumably done by non-cash transactions, up from barely 2% in 1976. By year 2000, half the world trade is likely to be conducted on basis of barter. As of mid-1984 some 88 nations used countertrade regularly and Governments of at least 15 Latin American countries had arranged or mandated commercial countertrade.

What is the primary function of an impact assessment? Many people at the International Association of Impact Assessment?s (IAIA) annual conference said that it is time to return to the fundamentals and consider the underlying drivers of impact assessments ? human health, safety and security. This fall, managers struggling with those fundamentals will receive extra support when a new course focusing on health and socially responsible security is launched online and in British Columbia, Canada, home to many of the world?s junior miners. Now in its 33rd year, the IAIA conference recently held in Calgary, Canada, typically brings together a range of professionals who work in the impact assessment field, including academics, as well as people conducting applied disciplines, such as social and environmental performance management. It is a chance for people grappling with how to assess impacts from projects (for example, dams, mining and other extractive projects), to compare notes and to talk about developments in how to measure, track and report on them. The comments about returning to fundamentals rose as participants talked about the ongoing and increasingly recognized divergence between three main impact assessment streams: environmental, social and health (EIA, SIA and HIA, respectively). Discussions in sessions and in the corridors included calls for streamlining, for integration, for improvement and sharing of practice ? particularly in the HIA stream, where those deeply engaged in the health discipline questioned how HIAs and their intended outcome of protecting human health can be better integrated into the EIAs or SIAs that dominate the impact assessment realm. EIAs and SIAs have become the main tool, particularly from a permitting perspective for large-scale mines, but seem to leave projects with little real information about what they need to do. Human health is not the only concern re-emerging. Although not reflected at the conference, there appears to be an emerging understanding of the need to link the determinants of health with socially responsible security practices. Companies conducting independent social performance assessments for international financial institutions based on the International Finance Corporation?s Environmental and Social Performance Standards increasingly wrestle with both community health and security issues as extractive companies encounter challenging social environments around the world. Once again, the intended outcome is to better protect human health, including avoiding health impacts from conflict, abuses and violence.

A computer model has been developed at Consolidation Coal Co.'s Central Engineering Dept. for preliminary economic evaluation of deep coal mine reserves. Since it was first formulated more than two years ago, the model has been used for the following purposes: (1) ranking studies of coal exploration projects, (2) marketing surveys, (3) preliminary sale and acquisition analysis of coal reserves, and (4) parametric analysis in conjunction with detailed feasibility studies.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as originally thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g., in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measurements in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe(OH)3 and between Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions.

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.

The Cowles Mountain Tunnel was driven 2,073 m (6,800 ft) with a 3.43 m (11 ft 3 in) shuffle shoe TBM, for the San Diego County Water Authority, through extremely high strength granitic rock in the City of San Diego, Ca. The initial contract was $10.9 million. Tunneling began in March 1992 and all work was completed in May 1993. After the tunnel drive was completed in September 1992, a 2.44 m (96 in) Welded Steel Pipe was installed, welded and encased with cellular backfill to complete a small portion of the County's $970 million Capital Improvement Project. This paper will discuss the successful completion of a tunnel through some of the hardest most abrasive rock ever excavated with a TBM in North America.
