Mining has been a significant component of the Appalachian economy for about 200 years. The region continues to be adversely affected by the environmental degradation associated with these past activities. In addition, companies today are being denied permits at sites where acid generation appears likely. And air emission limitations at power plants now threaten the economic health of many moderate- to high-sulfur coal mines. Thus, when considering the environmental impacts of mining coal in Appalachia, it is important to consider abandoned and active mine issues. For example, abandoned mines generate acidic, iron-rich waters that adversely affect more than 6,400 km (4,000 miles) of rivers and streams in Appalachia. In contrast, operations that were active after the enactment of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) cause little water pollution. However, the costs of water treatment at such sites exceed $1 million a day. Even where water quality is not dimished, water supplies can be affected by mining. Subsidence-induced fractures can lower water table elevations or drain a surface stream dry. Subsidence can also cause damage to surface and subsurface structures.

Over 80% of Australia's population lives within 200 km of the coast, 70% in 10 major coastal cities. Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

In this work, we propose to implement machine learning methods for the automatic classification of mining-related seismic data. The approach retained for the classification is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which has been tested and applied to two different mining datasets: the active ore mine of Garpenberg (Sweden), currently under exploitation, and the abandoned coal mine of Gardanne (France), where mining stopped in 2003. The first step of the approach consists in creating a well classified (manually) database of seismic signals separated in different classes as a function of the seismic sources. The selected database is then divided into two groups: train, containing the 70% of the signals, and test, which contains the remaining 30% of the signals within the selected database. The learning phase of the algorithm consists in creating a classification model based on the train group, which is further validated on the test group. The application of CNN for the automatic classification of Garpenberg and Gardanne seismic data shows, respectively, that about 88% and 98% of the seismic events of the two sites can be properly classified. These results demonstrate that machine learning could be a powerful tool for microseismic monitoring in mining and post-mining environments, which could be further extended to the whole automatic processing of seismic data, including signal’s classification as well as microseismic event’s localization.

The paper gives an account of the development of a mine health and safety program in China from 1987 to 1996. The project was funded by the United Nations Development Program and managed by the International Labor Office (ILO). The objective was to strengthen the capability of the National Safety Training Center (NSTC), located near Beijing to train more than 2,000 engineers per year, and provide consulting and informational services to 39 safety training centers and coal mines. Presently China has the highest mortality rate in the world for coal mine operations, the greater incidence occurring at the many thousands of small, unlicensed underground mines.

The studied coal mi1e is an underground coal mine located in the northern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah (Figure 1) . Since operation began in 1981, in situ stress conditions have been encountered which differ from the assumed conditions utilized during early mine design efforts. Geologic structures also varied somewhat from those projected during initial geologic interpretations of the area. The encountered geologic conditions combined with the unusual stress conditions prompted a combined study of in situ stress and stress-related geologic structures. The study was conducted in two phases, with phase 1 consisting of detailed underground mapping and analysis of stress-related geologic structures to determine stress orientations from which they originated; and phase 2, consisting of over- coring two sites within the mine to determine present in situ stress orientations and magnitudes. GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS Three types of geologic structures have been encountered in the mine that act as indicators of stress orientations of the geologic past. Two of these structures, faulting, and igneous dikes, are directly measurable in the mine. A third type of structure, photolineation, was detected through remote sensing methods and shoe god correlation to roof conditions in certain areas of the mine. Faults Two major orientations of faulting have been encountered in the studied coal mine, including a system of N 80 W striking normal faults and a system of N 55 to 70 W striking oblique-slip faults. Only data collected from the oblique-slip faults were used for this study due to the fact that these faults offset the N 80 W faults wherever the two systems intersect, indicating that the N 55 to 70 W system was created by a more recent stress field. Figure 2 shows locations within the mine where data were collected from seven locations along oblique-slip faults. Data collection consisted of measurement of fault plane strike and dip, fault slickenside trend and plunge, and slip direction. The data are tabulated in Table 1. The fault data were then plotted on stereo nets to determine the stress orientations present at the td of faulting (Figure 3). The determined stress orientations are 32~0 included in Table 1. The development of the mineral industry of Jamaica has been guided by an unwritten policy which has nevertheless been reflected in various pieces of mining legislation and by case-by-case approvals of incentive packages for non-bauxite minerals. An effort has now been made to bring together in one minerals policy document, all the policy elements that have guided our laws and actions thus far and to upgrade the final version to meet the challenges of the next century. In this regard, industrial minerals will be placed on a more equal footing with bauxite, especially in terms of investment incentives.

Due to a tight ash constraint on the clean coal product and difficult middlings washability characteristics, a considerable amount of coal was being lost in the jig middlings at the Monterey No. 2 Mine. An investigation was conducted into circuitry to recover this lost coal with minimal effect on the total clean coal ash. A reverse two-stage hydrocyclone system cleaning at low specific gravities was selected. This system is currently recovering approximately 5.8 kg/s (23 tph) of 11.5% to 12.5% ash coal. The specific gravity of separation for the system is about 1.5 and the probable error is 0.13.

INTRODUCTION One of the most important tasks facing the opera¬tors of deep-level gold mines is supporting the roof strata in the immediate vicinity of the stope faces. Some of the deeper gold mines operate at depths ex¬ceeding 3.0 km; the extreme mining depths and the tabular nature of the gold-bearing reefs result in high stress concentrations at the abutments of the stope faces. These, in turn, lead to extensive fracturing of even the hardest quartzites. Although most of these fractures develop in a stable manner, there have been many instances where rock failure occurred suddenly, resulting in a considerable amount of damage to the underground workings. Such violent rock failures commonly are known as "rock bursts," and they are typical of many hard-rock mines that are operating at great depths. To safeguard mining personnel and equipment against the effects of stable and unstable rock failures, adequate support must be provided to the fractured roof as quickly and as effec¬tively as possible. Traditionally, timber props and timber packs have been utilized to provide roof support in gold mine stopes up to 1.5 m wide. Both methods of support suffer from the fundamental disadvantage of generating sup¬port only in reaction to movement of the strata. Since unrestrained strata movement often results in a break¬down of the frictional forces that preserve the stability of the intensely fractured roof strata, it is essential that stope supports have rapid load-bearing characteristics. An equally important requirement is that the roof sup¬ports be able to accommodate displacements of the rock mass. A third requirement of roof supports in gold mine stopes is that they must be able to accommodate the high rates of stope convergence typical of rock bursts. The hydraulic prop is the obvious choice for sup¬porting the stope faces in deep-level hard-rock mines. Since hydraulic props can be installed with a positive setting load, they can provide roof support that is independent of strata movement. By equipping the hydraulic props with yield valves, they meet the require¬ment of being able to accommodate rock-mass displace¬ments. However, the requirement of being able to accommodate high rates of stope convergence without overloading or damaging the rock strata was rather difficult to meet. The first introduction of hydraulic roof supports into gold mine stopes showed that conventional hy¬draulic props, such as those used in coal mines, were completely unsuitable for a number of reasons, in¬cluding: 1) Since drilling and blasting are used to break the ore in gold mine stopes, supports installed close enough to be effective are exposed to the vigor of the blast. Conventional coal-mining props suffered extensive blast damage, despite being protected by a blast barricade. 2) The environmental conditions in gold mine stopes favor corrosion. The high quartz content and the abrasiveness of the ore further aggravate the problem by damaging the protective coatings on the hydraulic surfaces. Simply changing the design of gold mine props to have the piston project from the bottom rather than from the top resulted in dramatic improvements in the service life of the props. The improvement was attributable to external water in the stope washing the fine quartz grit away from the hydraulic surfaces, rather than concentrating the particles between the cylinder and piston of the prop. 3) The most obvious deficiency of conventional coal mining props was their inability to yield rapidly enough to accommodate the high convergence rates of rock bursts without overloading the supports. As a result of the first disappointing results with hydraulic supports in narrow hard-rock stopes mined by drilling and blasting, a comprehensive research and development program was undertaken. The hydraulic props resulting from several years of research and exten¬sive field trials are described herein. To date (1978), more than 130,000 of these props have been manufac¬tured and used successfully in a number of mines and under a variety of geological conditions. Although many of the detailed specifications are directed spe¬cifically to gold mining conditions, there are a number of points that are of general importance in the design of underground support systems for tabular excavations in hard-rock mines of any type. SPECIFICATIONS FOR RAPID-YIELDING PROPS Yield Requirements The yield requirements for hydraulic props in deep¬level hard-rock gold mines are summarized in the fol¬lowing paragraphs. Slow Yield Load: The design of the yield valve must allow the yield load to be preset to between 300 and 400 kN. This flexibility is necessary to account for the differences in the strength properties of the roof and floor strata. Drop in Load Under Slow Yield: The drop in sup¬port load during a slow yield should be as small as possible, but it should not exceed 5% of the slow-yield load. Rapid-Yield Load: The load exerted by the prop during periods of rapid stope convergence should be as close as possible to the slow-yield load. The rapid-yield load should not exceed the slow-yield load by more than 15% at yield rates of 1.0 m/s. The limitation of the upper valve of the yield load is important; it deter¬mines the hydraulic performance of the yield valve. The hydraulic props that satisfy this criterion have performed well, even under severe rock bursts. Load Changes Under Rapid Load: On some of the earlier rapid-yielding props, conditions of dynamic in¬stability were observed; these conditions resulted in a complete breakdown of support resistance. It is essen¬tial that the force oscillations during rapid yielding be as small as possible, not exceeding -*5% of the average rapid-yield load at a yield rate of 1.0 m/s. "The picture of the baby surrounded by the number of (usually) pounds of a variety of mineral products a newborn will use in a lifetime has been widely distributed over the years, both on the web and as business cards that could be distributed to anyone. Figure 1 shows a typical example. I have included a slide of the mineral baby in various lectures over the years, particularly in my lecture “Industrial minerals: much used, little recognized.” The mineral baby with associated estimated lifetime mineral quantities is updated every year. I collected a set of past mineral baby pictures to examine the changes in the quantities of the various mineral products over the years.The mineral baby was introduced by the Minerals Information Institute (MII) in 1999 and became known as the “MII Baby.” SME took over MII in 2008 and continued publication as the “MII Baby” until the merger of MII with SME’s GEM program in 2011 to form SME’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC). MEC is now the publisher. Figure 2 is the 2016 version of the mineral baby. The repositioning of the picture of the baby from lying on its back to crawling reflects a major design change to help emphasize that SME’s MEC is now the mineral baby’s publisher.Data sourcesThe data used to prepare each year’s mineral baby comes from the National Mining Association, which collects the preliminary annual mineral commodity data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources. This preliminary data becomes available late in the first half of each year. The life expectancy data for each year comes from the Center for Disease Control’s “Data and Statistics by Topic” and the population data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Quick Facts” tab.The source mineral data is compiled using metric tonnes as the basic unit. The quantity of of each mineral is the apparent U.S. consumption each year."

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

Cleveland-Cliffs views the mining process as ex- tending from mine planning to cargo loading including auxiliary systems such as materials handling and plant utilities. Process automation is recognized as an area that can provide significant improvement opportunities with less capital requirement than major flowsheet modifications. This article discusses the development and results of a strategy to allow and promote implementation of process-automation improvements at individual mines based on their economic priorities, taking advantage of common systems and concepts for use at multiple mines where practical. Specific process-control upgrade projects at Hibbing Taconite Co. and the Empire Mine are reviewed.

In this study, with the primary goal of capturing ongoing digital transformation and automation impacts on the mining industry and its workforce, we conduct several interviews with mining industry experts in the United States and analyze our survey reports qualitatively and quantitatively through exploratory analysis. After the interpretation of the insights of industry experts, we proceed to generate a personalized and customized data analysis through a novel metric based on skills, knowledge, competencies and occupational requirements, which quantifies the job similarities for occupations in the mining industry based on the publicly available database of the U.S. Department of Labor. We use text analytics to tokenize and classify the interviews to capture a better understanding of major response categories. The temporal analysis shows that the critical competency needs in the data science and autonomy category increases from 28 percent in current demands to 43 percent. In defining our metric, we also calculate Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for each job profile that enables determining whether and to what extent that job is transitionary in our test set based on the mean, standard deviation and kurtosis of each job of interest. Our analysis reveals that the in-group job transitions are significantly easier than the between-group transitions, proving our initial assumptions and common sense. The generated heat maps provide the opportunity to present the gap between the current job and desired job profiles that provide feasible career change options, among others, offering individualized career paths for job seekers and promoting potential job transitions. Through the collection of industry-specific individual employee data, the AI system is envisaged to continue to learn as end users engage with the system, thus creating a central data hub specifically for the future workforce in the mining industry. Although the study has limitations on generalizability for qualitative assessments, it presents itself as a valuable application of how qualitative and quantitative approaches could be of value for future worker training in the mining sector.

Twenty years ago, when tunnel projects in the UK were generally procured by the public sector, many were completed late and over budget. Now a significant proportion of new infrastructure is developed by the private sector. Seeking more certainty in cost and programme, promoters have tried new and radically different methods of procurement and contract forms. The paper will review these developments, then examine the approach adopted for some of the largest current UK tunnelling projects (both in the public and private sectors) including the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the Heathrow Terminal 5 Development and new highway tunnels.

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a combined tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) respirable dust monitor and cap lamp, configured to have dimensions and weight similar to those of a lead-acid miner’s cap lamp battery. The Higgins-Dewell (HD) cyclone design operated at 2.2 L min-1 airflow has previously been reported to have low bias relative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) convention. Previous reports have described the PDM as meeting the NIOSH Accuracy Criterion. In order to avoid certain analysis anomalies encountered during these evaluations, a different method of establishing the PDM relative standard deviation was employed. Re-analysis of laboratory data for both the early prototype and precommercial PDMs indicates that the PDM still meets the NIOSH accuracy criterion, and that the precommercial PDMs are more accurate than previously reported.

Much research effort has been spent in attempting to reduce the high energy costs in grinding, but relatively little in developing methods to enhance the liberation of the minerals from each other. This paper presents some ideas on the nature and role of grain boundaries in mineral assemblies, and their influence on the propagation of cracks through the rock. It is argued that if the mechanisms of fracture are more clearly understood, crack propagation may be controlled in such a way that intergranular fracture dominates breakage, producing less fines and a higher degree of liberation.

Over the past nine years a means for measuring the distance between the mine roof and floor has been developed at the White Pine Mine which yields relevant information utilized in the mining operation. The technique known as "convergence!' is an efficient, low cost way for obtaining large quantities of data for predicting roof falls, caving activity, and overall mine stability. From a limited introduction in 1964 related to monitoring an experimental longwall project, the activity of convergence measurements has been expanded to become a production tool now found in all sections of the mine. Presently, the program involves four main types of activity: 1. Monthly measurements in areas known to be active, and in sample blocks scattered throughout the mine for a long-term stability study. 2. Semi-monthly measurements along vital travel roads, belt drifts and compressor sites. 3. Weekly measurements in areas where men are working. 4. Daily measurements in pillar-recovery and caving operations. Today, one field engineer and six technicians are involved full time in convergence work. Rock Mechanics technicians have installed approximately five thousand stations since the start of the program and of this number, over twenty-five hundred active stations still comprise the mine-wide network spread over the more than five square mile extent of the White Pine Mine workings.

INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982). One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Elorgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cy to toxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le ?oux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly . Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles , of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). This study aims to investigate the optimal method for ore pass construction in incompetent rock masses. We evaluated the conventional and raise boring methods based on safety, efficiency, excavation control and ground support for ore pass construction. A stability analysis using analytical Q-raise (QR method) and kinematic analysis methods for ore pass construction with a raise borer before and after grout injection of the rock mass was performed. As a case study, an ore pass (diameter of 3 m, depth of 100 m) within an incompetent rock mass was considered to gain further insight. The rock mass was characterized according to the classification methods Q Barton, rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR) and geological strength index (GSI). The grout intensity number (GIN) method of grout injection was used. The safety factor of less than 1.075 obtained before injection was lower than the acceptance criteria. However, grout injection before raise borer excavation resulted in a safety factor greater than 1.5. Using a raise borer without pre-grouting indicated that the maximum unsupported diameter (MUSD) of the ore pass was less than the required 3 m and equal to or larger than 3 m post-grouting.

Knife River Coal Mining Co.'s Beulah Mine is a multiple-seam lignite operation located in western North Dakota. The mine began production in 1963 with annual production of 450 kt (496,000 st). It now produces 2.2 Mt/a (2.4 million stpy). As development progresses, operations advanced into more complex geologic areas. Various techniques have been analyzed to maximize coal recovery in a cost-effective manner. Additional studies are ongoing to determine what changes will be implemented as deep, wet sands are encountered in the reserve area. Knife River Coal began as an underground operation in 1924 at Beulah, 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Bismarck. In 1950, the operation converted to a combination underground and surface mine. The underground segment was closed in 1952. Development of the existing reserve area south of Beulah began in 1963. About one-fourth of the acreage under permit (Fig. 1) is sufficient for 10 years at current production rates.

In South Carolina and Georgia an area about 20 miles wide situated near the inner margin of the Coastal Plain and extending from the vicinity of Columbia, S.C. southwestward about 180 miles to the vicinity of Macon, Georgia is the principal kaolin-producing area of the world. It is especially important as the world's major source of clay used for paper coating. Essentially all of the land known or likely to be productive of quality kaolin in this area is now owned or controlled by producing companies. The least-fully developed portion is that in the vicinity of Wrens, Georgia which has been explored and developed since 1961. For the two decades following the end of world war II, demand for kaolin increased at approximately twice the rate for other industrial minerals. From 1945 to 1965 production increased four-fold. Since 1965 the rate of increase has been less, but the outlook now is that production and demand will double at least once again before the year 2000. A substantial part of this increased demand has come, and will continue to come, from industrial development, especially in the paper industry, outside the United States. The general effect, in addition to a continuing increase in production in the U.S., will be to cause: 1. Intensive research for development of more effective and more economical methods of beneficiation; 2. Concerted research effort to find an economical way of modifying high-viscosity kaolin so that it can be used for paper coating; 3. More active exploration in the U.S. and overseas, especially for deposits to supply the foreign markets; 4. More intensive study of the geological factors responsible for the accumulation of commercial deposits of kaolin; 5. Some modest rise in price, relative to the cost of other industrial minerals. The effect on kaolin producing region of Georgia and South Carolina will be to cause: 1. Working of progressively lower-grade deposits; 2. An increase in the acceptable thickness of overburden; 3. Mining of deposits farther down-dip, the use of which is now inhibited by large volumes of groundwater; 4. Increased threat of invasion of the kaolin in industry's market by substitute materials; 5. A substantial increase in concern over environmental factors; 6. More attention to be paid to the large opportunity offered for mining of silica sand and other co-products.
